Agricultural Trade Wars: A Threat To The Gatt And Global Free Trade., Thomas J. Schoenbaum Jan 1993

Agricultural Trade Wars: A Threat To The Gatt And Global Free Trade., Thomas J. Schoenbaum

St. Mary's Law Journal

Agriculture, today, is the center of a set of multi-dimensional international controversies and crises. International agricultural strife threatens the future of the global free-trade system. This strife soured relations between the United States and its principal allies and trading partners: Canada, the European Community (EC), and Japan. The agricultural trade controversy is at the heart of the bitter stalemate of the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) negotiations. The deadlock over farm trade called into question the very future of the GATT as an international organization. Controversies over agriculture also endanger approval of the recently …

Nitrogen Composition And Feeding Value Of Annual Forages As Affected By Nitrogen Fertilization And Defoliation Frequency., Youbo Zhang Jan 1993

Nitrogen Composition And Feeding Value Of Annual Forages As Affected By Nitrogen Fertilization And Defoliation Frequency., Youbo Zhang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Initially, various solvents were tested for their efficacy in isolating soluble nitrogen (SN) from annual ryegrass and berseem clover. Plant nitrogen (PN) solubilities were similar in.5 M NaCl, autoclaved rumen fluid, borate phosphate buffer and Burroughs' solution. The mean PN solubilities across forages ranged from 12% for.1 M acetic acid to 45% for.2% NaOH. At 4$\sp\circ$C, 15% TCA precipitated the most soluble plant protein nitrogen (SPPN). Nitrogen (N) yield, concentrations of PN, SN, SPPN and soluble nonprotein nitrogen (SNPN) increased linearly as N fertilization (NF) increased from 0 to 335 kg N/ha. Decreasing defoliation interval (DI) from 6- to 2-wk …

Pedogenic Development Of Soils At High Altitude In Burundi., Salvator Kaburungu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To evaluate the effects of long-term cultivation and pasture on deforested soils at high altitude in Burundi, comparisons of morphological, physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of soils under natural forest with their counterparts under cultivation and pasture were performed. A typical soil under natural forest classifies as fine, oxidic, isomesic, Typic Haplorthods. Cultivated soils classify as fine, oxidic, isothermic Humic Hapludoxs. Pastured soils classify as fine, oxidic, isothermic, allic Humic Hapludoxs. When the sombric horizon is prominent, they classify as Sombriudoxs. We proposed a Spodic subgroup for the Hapludoxs. The studied area was highly weathered prior to faulting and uplifting …

Nitrogen Form, Aluminum, And Their Interaction Effects On Growth, Nitrogen Absorption And Chemical Composition Of Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.)., Jose Ramon Binns Jan 1993

Nitrogen Form, Aluminum, And Their Interaction Effects On Growth, Nitrogen Absorption And Chemical Composition Of Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.)., Jose Ramon Binns

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is frequently grown on acid soils with potentially toxic levels of aluminum (Al). Interaction effects of nitrogen (N) form and Al on growth and nutrient relationships in ryegrass require further definition for environmental, biological, and economic reasons. Nutrient solution and soil experiments were conducted in growth chambers to determine interactive effects of ammonium: nitrate (NH$\sb4$:NO$\sb3$) ratios and Al on growth, N absorption, nutrient composition, cation influx rate, and N use efficiency. In nutrient solution studies, highest dry weights of shoots were obtained when the two N forms were present in equal proportions, while highest dry …

Visions For Agriculture, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Agriculture reports

This workshop grew out of a conversation between Maurice Barnes, a Trayning farmer and member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Dryland Research Institute, and Steve Porritt, the officer in charge of the Dryland Research Institute at Merredin. Maurice was interested in the idea of posing the question 'What would agriculture be like if we had known as much about this landscape in 1829 as we know now?', to a group of farmers and others interested in the central wheatbelt and its future. Maurice saw this question as a first step toward achieving some shared vision for the future …

Can Extra Fat Make Healthier Hogs?, Anne Elise Clark

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Based on research by Fritsche (1991), Kelley (1988), and Caruso and Jeska (1990), it has been postulated that the addition of omega-3 fatty acids to the diet enhances the immune response of several species. This study was an attempt to ascertain the effects of addition of dietary omega-3 fatty acids in the form of ground flax contained in Omega Gold on the immune response of swine. The goal of this study was twofold: to determine the effects of ground flax on the humoral immunity of young pigs, and to differentiate between effects gained from enhancement of passive and active immunity. …

Reconnaissance Survey Of Nitrate Concentrations In Ground Water In Howard And Pike Counties, Arkansas, Travis Thornton, Kenneth F. Steele Feb 1992

Reconnaissance Survey Of Nitrate Concentrations In Ground Water In Howard And Pike Counties, Arkansas, Travis Thornton, Kenneth F. Steele

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

In recent years, the rapid growth of poultry and hog production in Arkansas has caused concern regarding nitrate contamination of the ground water. In the study area of Pike and Howard Counties, the number of hogs has increased from 3,300 hogs in 1970 to 75,000 hogs in 1990. Poultr¥ production for the area has increased from 38,933,000 per year 1n 1970 to 62,774,000 per year in 1990. As animal production increases, so does the amount of animal waste that must be disposed. Hog production is of particular concern. Typical hog operations store concentrated animal waste in lagoons prior to land …

Mp92-64 The Stable Fly: A Pest Of Humans And Domestic Animals, Gustave D. Thomas, Steven R. Skoda Jan 1992

Mp92-64 The Stable Fly: A Pest Of Humans And Domestic Animals, Gustave D. Thomas, Steven R. Skoda

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Many species of flies are pests. Many people, if you were to ask them about flies, would be at least vaguely aware of the potential to flies to transmit disease organisms. But yet, for the most part, a fly is a fly is a fly. Sayings like "It must be about to rain, the house flies are biting" are still common and show a general need for more, readily accessible information, particularly about some of the pest flies.

Stable flies, obligate blood-feeders, are very important pests to the cattle industry and, at times, are pests to other groups (they're most …

G92-1094 Controlling External Swine Parasites, John B. Campbell, Barbara Straw Jan 1992

G92-1094 Controlling External Swine Parasites, John B. Campbell, Barbara Straw

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Mixing, safety, restrictions, and precautions for insecticides used to control external swine parasites.

Hog Lice and Mange Mites

External parasites of swine include the hog louse and two species of mange mites (the common itch mite and the less common hog follicle mite). Excessive scratching and rubbing by pigs nearly always indicate an infestation of hog lice or mange mites.

Hog lice and mange mites infest a high percentage of swine slaughtered at Midwest slaughter plants.

G92-1121 Winter Deicing Agents For The Homeowner, Jay Fitzgerald, Donald E. Janssen Jan 1992

G92-1121 Winter Deicing Agents For The Homeowner, Jay Fitzgerald, Donald E. Janssen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Information on deicers and how they affect plants is covered here.

Slick sidewalks and roads are hazardous. Removing compacted snow and ice with shovels or snow blowers is not always an easy task. Deicers can help by "undercutting," or loosening the snow or ice because they lower the freezing point of water.

Do not use deicers to completely melt snow or ice, but to make their removal easier. Deicers melt down through the ice or snow to the hard surface, then spread out underneath. This undercuts and loosens the snow so shoveling and plowing can be done.

G92-1112 Lice Control On Cattle, John B. Campbell Jan 1992

G92-1112 Lice Control On Cattle, John B. Campbell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Identifying and controlling lice on cattle both are covered here.

Cattle lice may be the most underestimated livestock insect in terms of economic losses. The USDA estimates that U.S. livestock producers lose $125 million a year to cattle lice.

Heavy louse populations cause lowered milk production, loss of flesh, stunted growth, general unthriftiness and anemia. "Chronic" or "carrier" cows may abort due to louse-induced anemia. During severe winters, louse-infested animals are more susceptible to respiratory diseases.

Edwardsiella Ictaluri: Pathogenic Mechanisms And Antigens Recognized By Infected Channel Catfish., Thomas James Baldwin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To clarify early events in the pathogenesis of enteric septicemia of catfish, 140 channel catfish fingerlings (Ictalurus punctatus) were each infected with approximately 1.0 $\times$ 10$\sp9$ colony forming units Edwardsiella ictaluri (E. ictaluri) by intragastric intubation. Fish were sacrificed at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours post infection (PI). Multiple tissue samples were evaluated by gross observation, light and electron microscopy, and immunohistochemical methods. In addition, stomach, intestine, trunk kidney, and liver were cultured quantitatively for bacteria. Trunk kidney cultures were positive by 0.25 hours PI, indicating rapid transmucosal passage. Histologic lesions …

A Thematic Unit For Integrating Social Studies And Science In The First Grade, Lin Marjorie Lasater

All Graduate Projects

A thematic unit for integrating social studies and science with other curriculum areas was developed for first grade students. The theme for the unit centered around farms. The unit was divided into five subunits: farms, farm animals, orchards/vineyards (to include fruits of the Yakima Valley and apples), crops (to include vegetables of the Yakima Valley, pumpkins, and wheat), and nutrition/four food groups. The literature was reviewed to establish a theoretical foundation for the unit and for activities that focused on reading, writing, and language development.

The Effects Of Dietary Sodium Zeolite A On Growth And Mineral Utilization Of Chickens., Kevin Lee Watkins Jan 1992

The Effects Of Dietary Sodium Zeolite A On Growth And Mineral Utilization Of Chickens., Kevin Lee Watkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of sodium zeolite A (SZA) on calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and zinc (Zn) utilization in broiler chickens from 5 to 14 or 15 days of age. In Experiment 1, two levels each of SZA (0 and.75%) and (or) Ca (1.0 and 1.5%) were fed to both uninfected and Eimeria acervulina-infected chicks. Excess dietary Ca reduced (P $$.10) in infected chicks (Ca x coccidiosis, P $<$.05). Addition of SZA to diets with excess Ca further decreased (P $<$.05) gain and tibia ash. These results suggest that SZA may exacerbate the adverse effects of excess dietary Ca. In Experiment 2, four levels of dietary Ca (.6,.8, 1.0, and 1.2%) and (or) two levels of SZA (0 and.75%) were fed. Sodium zeolite A decreased (P $<$.05) plasma P and tibia magnesium (Mg) but increased (P $<$.05) tibia Ca, Zn, aluminum (Al), and manganese (Mn). Tibia ash and shearing force were increased in chicks fed SZA and inadequate dietary Ca, but were decreased in chicks fed SZA and 1.2% Ca (Ca x SZA, P $<$.05). Dietary SZA enhanced tibia ash, density, and shearing force when dietary Ca was low; however, SZA reduced many bone mineralization indices in chicks fed excess Ca. In Experiment 3, various levels of dietary P (.41,.55, and.69%), Ca (.6 and 1%), and (or) SZA (0 and.75%) were fed. The addition of Ca, SZA, or both exacerbated the adverse effects of feeding low-P diets, yet alleviated the adverse effects of feeding low-Ca, high-P diets. Dietary SZA reduced (P $<$.01) plasma P and increased (P $<$.02) tibia Mn, Zn, copper (Cu), and Al. The SZA-induced increase in tibia Al was most evident in chicks fed low levels of P (SZA x P, P $<$.02). These data demonstrate that the effects of SZA are influenced by dietary concentrations of Ca and P, and that the addition of SZA to diets low in P results in bone Al accumulation. In Experiment 4, the effects of SZA on chicks fed inadequate (35 ppm), marginal (40 ppm), adequate (85 ppm), and excess (4,000 ppm) levels of Zn were assessed. Sodium zeolite A increased (P $<$.05) tibia and pancreas Zn regardless of dietary Zn concentration. Dietary SZA tended to alleviate the adverse effects of feeding inadequate Zn and exacerbate the adverse effects of feeding excess Zn.

Effects Of Heat And Iron Fractions On Lipid Oxidation In Meat., Dongmei Han Jan 1992

Effects Of Heat And Iron Fractions On Lipid Oxidation In Meat., Dongmei Han

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Size exclusion (SE) and hydrophobic interaction (HIC) high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods were developed for determining hemoglobin, myoglobin, and total pigments in beef and chicken. Hemoglobin and myoglobin in beef, but not in chicken, were separated by HIC with minimum detectable levels of 0.187 and 0.085 $\mu$g/$\mu$l, respectively. Determination of total pigment by SE-HPLC (minimum detection of 0.001 $\mu$g/$\mu$l) was more sensitive than with spectrophotometric assay. The effects of heat at 55$\sp\circ$C, 70$\sp\circ$C, 85$\sp\circ$C, and 100$\sp\circ$C on the distribution of iron in six fractions (water-soluble, water-insoluble, diffusate, hematin, total heme, and ferritin) in beef and chicken muscles were determined. …

Sorption, Kinetics, And Transport Of Selected Heavy Metals In Soil: A Laboratory Study And Modelling Approaches., Christoph Hinz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The retention and transport behavior of heavy metals in soils is affected by soil chemical heterogeneity. The objectives of this study were to evaluate (i) the effects of heterogeneity on solute transport of heavy metals under steady water flow, (ii) the applicability of single solute and ion exchange isotherms to model Zn and Cd transport in soil columns, (iii) the modelling of the sorption kinetics of Zn under batch and flow conditions, and (iv) the effects of organic matter and iron oxide removal on the kinetics of Zn sorption in soils. A sensitivity analysis showed that site affinity distribution functions …

Effect Of Soil Redox Potential Andph On Nutrient Uptake By Rice With Special Reference To Arsenic Forms And Uptake., Alfredo Ruben Marin Jan 1992

Effect Of Soil Redox Potential Andph On Nutrient Uptake By Rice With Special Reference To Arsenic Forms And Uptake., Alfredo Ruben Marin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies dealing with the availability and speciation of arsenic (As) as affected by soil redox potential and pH were initiated because of the lack of information on As chemistry in flooded soils. The chemistry of native and applied As was studied in a Crowley silt loam soil (Typic Albaqualf). Arsenic uptake and its toxic effect on two rice cultivars as affected by As chemical form and concentration were also studied. Soil redox potential and pH were shown to affect speciation and solubility of both native and applied As. Upon soil reduction, indigenous-As solubility increased, and arsenite (As(III)) comprised most of …

Nutrient Reserves And Diet Of Breeding Mallards And Blue-Winged Teal, Andrew D. Young

Digitized Theses

Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos; n = 339) and Blue-winged Teal (A. discors; n = 213; hereafter teal) were collected from western (1986) and eastern (1987) Saskatchewan grassland and parkland habitats during egg formation to examine body composition, diets and digestive organ size with respect to hypotheses concerning habitat (this study) and the use of body fat (Drobney 1980; Rohwer 1986a; Ankney and Afton 1988). I predicted that ducks breeding in grassland habitats would rely upon more stored body nutrients, whereas parkland ducks would rely more upon dietary nutrients to form eggs. Body composition including fat, protein and mineral reserves and digestive …

The Morphology, Development, And Function Of Experimentally Induced Macrophage Aggregates In Rivulus Marmoratus., Wolfgang Klaus Vogelbein Jan 1991

The Morphology, Development, And Function Of Experimentally Induced Macrophage Aggregates In Rivulus Marmoratus., Wolfgang Klaus Vogelbein

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Calyptospora funduli is a pathogenic coccidium that infects the liver and pancreas of estuarine killifishes belonging to the genus Fundulus. Experimental infection of the atypical fish host Rivulus marmoratus with this intracellular protozoan parasite caused the development of hepatic macrophage aggregates (MA's) and granulomas. The Rivulus/Calyptospora host-parasite system thus represents a new laboratory model for investigations of MA biology. In the present study, this model was used to: (1) examine the morphology and sequential development of the parasite-elicited hepatic MA's in R. marmoratus, (2) define the role that these structures play in the pathogenesis of an infectious disease process, and …
