Teachers' Perspectives: Literacy Recommendations For Newcomers With Limited Language Proficiency, Rachel Edmunds
Teachers' Perspectives: Literacy Recommendations For Newcomers With Limited Language Proficiency, Rachel Edmunds
Theses and Dissertations
Although multilingual literacy instruction has expanded in recent years, less is known about how teachers can support newcomers with limited language proficiency in Grades 4-6. This gap is significant as many teachers report feeling underprepared to meet the needs of their multilingual learners, especially those with limited language proficiency. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the literacy practices and strategies that teachers found effective when working with students who are multilingual newcomers with limited language proficiency (NLLPs) in Spanish and English in Grades 4-6 along with their implementation experiences. Drawing from Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, this qualitative study …

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), the latter of which often originates from DVT and can be fatal.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify causal genetic factors that alter risk of PE among those with a presumed DVT.
Methods: Using a case-only design of VTE, we conducted meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in the International Network Against Venous Thrombosis Consortium. Among participants diagnosed with VTE, each study identified those who had a clinically reported PE, with or without a clinically reported DVT; those remaining had isolated DVT. Logistic regression …
Rewriting The Plan: Environmental Justice, Community Resistance, And Governance Power In Hollister, California, Rolan Resendiz
Rewriting The Plan: Environmental Justice, Community Resistance, And Governance Power In Hollister, California, Rolan Resendiz
Dissertations
This dissertation examines how community-led resistance in Hollister, California, challenged environmental injustice and infrastructure governance through grassroots civic action. Focusing on the Hollister Guardians, a coalition of primarily Latinx residents who organized in response to concerns about the city’s sewer system, this qualitative case study introduces the Critical Just Sustainability Policy Praxis (CJSPP) framework, developed by integrating Critical Policy Analysis and the Just Sustainability Paradigm with a praxis-oriented focus on community action. Using critical document analysis of city council meeting minutes, local media coverage, and community-authored texts mainly from 2023 to 2025, the study explores how policy discourse, institutional decision-making, …
Health Literacy, Health Information Seeking Behavior, And Vocal Hygiene Amongst Video Game Voice Actors In The United States, Wendy Lau
Master's Theses
Video game voice actors (VGVAs) perform vocally demanding tasks to bring video game characters to life, and are at high risk for voice disorders. This exploratory study aims to characterize vocal health in VGVAs by investigating the relationships between health literacy, health information seeking behavior, and vocal hygiene practices. Thirty-one VGVAs completed an anonymous online survey. Data were analyzed using a mixed-methods approach: quantitative health literacy scores were calculated, and qualitative data underwent inductive thematic analysis in NVivo. Results show that VGVAs are highly proactive with their vocal health due to their desire for career longevity and their professional vocal …

Out Of The Briar Patch: Storying Resistance Among Black Male Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse And Its Impact On Their Educational Experiences, Anthony Animuntu
Dissertations
This study examines the lack of support within educational settings for Black boys who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Despite growing attention to trauma-informed practices, the experiences of Black male survivors remain largely absent from educational research. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach informed by critical autoethnography, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five African American men reflecting on their schooling experiences as CSA survivors. Axial analysis revealed four central themes: silence as survival and strategic invisibility, shame and internalized distress, institutional misrecognition, and the transformative role of relational care and educational kinship. Findings indicate that participants’ trauma was often …

Novel Integrative Mobilizable Elements (Imes) In Vibrio Chromosomes Linked To Translucent Post-Larvae Disease (Tpd), Ruyi Hao, Yan Fang, Yang Yang, Mingshu Yang
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Translucent post-larvae disease (TPD), caused by specific Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains, poses a global threat to shrimp aquaculture. A key virulence factor in these strains is the vhv gene cluster, which encodes toxins central to TPD pathogenesis. While plasmid-borne vhv genes have been extensively studied, the chromosome-borne vhv genes in TPD-associated strains remain poorly characterized. In this study, we systematically analyzed integrative mobilizable elements (IMEs) on the small secondary chromosomes of TPD-associated V. parahaemolyticus. Seven nearly identical novel IMEs harboring full-length vhv clusters were identified from seven independent strains. These IMEs encode a tyrosine recombinase for site-specific chromosomal integration, yet lack …
The God Machine: Environmental Resonances In Tolkien And Hollow Knight: Silksong, Alicia Fox-Lenz
The God Machine: Environmental Resonances In Tolkien And Hollow Knight: Silksong, Alicia Fox-Lenz
Mythcon
After reading The Lord of the Rings, it would not be surprising for the reader to assume Tolkien was a luddite or at very least had some deep-rooted environmentalist leanings. After all, the anti-industrialist sentiment is one of the many themes that so enamored his American fans in the 1960s. In LOTR, industry (as opposed to craft) is aligned with evil, most notably through Saruman — a failed craftsman who has turned to machination. Through him, we see the industrialization of Isengard and its deleterious effects on nearby Fangorn, as well as the resulting destruction of the failed …

Using Fecal Diagnostic Tests To Assess The Prevalence Of Fasciola Hepatica In The United States Sheep Population, Brooke A. Delcambre
LSU Master's Theses
Fasciola hepatica, the common liver fluke, is endemic in the Pacific Northwest and Gulf Coast of the United States. To provide updated information on F. hepatica prevalence, as part of the USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System Sheep 2024 study, sheep operations in the top 30 sheep-producing states were identified, and producers were invited to participate. For each operation, feces were collected from at least eight sheep and pooled to form a single composite sample. Two methods were used to identify sheep infected with F. hepatica: fecal sedimentation and indirect sandwich ELISA. At the national level, across 318 operations, 7.1 …
Fangorn Forest As A Rerouting To The Ecological Contemplative In The Two Towers, Nicholas Birns
Fangorn Forest As A Rerouting To The Ecological Contemplative In The Two Towers, Nicholas Birns
Mythcon
In The Two Towers, Fangorn Forest initially appears as an uncanny diversion when Merry and Pippin flee into its shadowy depths to escape Saruman’s Uruk-hai. Their encounter with Treebeard awakens the Ents, providing unexpected and devastating flow to the power of Saruman the White. Far from actually being scary or horrifying, though, the forest is actually the gateway to two very important qualities in The Lord of the Rings: a sense of deep psychology, of caring for the land so much that sentient being has become actually bound up with natural entities, and of contemplation, as Treebeard Who …

The panel will focus on an interdisciplinary pedagogical approach anchored to research applications of AAC&U High Impact Practices in integrative learning, learning communities, place-based writing, project-based learning, and gamification studies (Chou). Framed through a synthesis of ethno-geology and mythology, I developed a collaborative assignment that asked my intro to mythology students to develop their own mythologies based on Arizona specific cultures or geological features and oddities. After conducting their own background research, undergraduate students developed locally-based mythologies that answered at least one of the four big questions of existence. Then, they anchored those mythologies within one of the more readily …
“I’Ll Cry Tomorrow”: The Heroism Of Anti-Alcoholism Advocate Lillian Roth, Elizabeth Gritter
“I’Ll Cry Tomorrow”: The Heroism Of Anti-Alcoholism Advocate Lillian Roth, Elizabeth Gritter
Heroism Science
Lillian Roth (1910–1980) is remembered primarily for her bestselling autobiography I’ll Cry Tomorrow and its successful film adaptation, yet her broader significance as a social hero has received little scholarly attention. This article examines Roth’s transformation from celebrated entertainer and alcoholic to influential public advocate whose confessional storytelling helped reshape public attitudes toward alcoholism during the mid-twentieth century. Drawing on Roth’s autobiographies, contemporary media coverage, and historical sources, the article argues that her willingness to publicly disclose trauma, addiction, and recovery represented an act of social courage that challenged prevailing stigma. By leveraging celebrity to promote compassion, recovery, and public …

Food and Machinery
[Objective] To establish a rapid detection method for viable Salmonella based on specific phage infection and recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) in response to the key challenge that traditional molecular biological detection methods have difficulty in conveniently distinguishing between viable and non-viable foodborne pathogens. [Methods] Taking advantage of the characteristic that O-1 phage only proliferates in viable bacteria, the phage is added to the enriched sample. After further incubation, total DNA is extracted. Fluorescent RPA is used to determine whether the phage has significantly proliferated, so as to judge the presence of viable Salmonella in the original sample. [Results] After optimization, …

Dynamical Pathways Of Fear And Anger: Testing The Predictive Validity Of The Basic Evaluation Process Framework, Maryana Borri Madeira
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The present study tested the predictive validity of the Basic Evaluation Process framework by examining whether Fear and Anger emerge as competing emotional attractors during threat appraisal. Using a mouse-tracking paradigm with audio recording, fifty participants reasoned aloud about a self-selected threatening situation while continuously rating their Fear and Anger. Cross-correlation analysis confirmed dynamic dependence between Fear and Anger, although the coupling was positive rather than negative, indicating co-activation rather than mutual suppression. Vector field analysis identified stable attractor structures for all participants, but the distribution of primary attractors across the Fear by Anger state space did not reveal a …

BACKGROUND: Microvascular dysfunction post stroke remains insufficiently investigated and may contribute to impairments in physical function. Single passive limb movement (sPLM) provides a clinically relevant assessment of microvascular vasodilation. We hypothesized the response to sPLM would be attenuated in the paretic leg compared with age- and sex-matched controls (CON) and would improve following a single session of ischemic conditioning (IC), an intervention known to enhance vasodilation. METHODS: In this randomized crossover trial, superficial femoral artery leg blood flow was measured during sPLM, using a Biodex dynamometer, which passively moved the leg 90° at 1Hz. A thigh cuff was placed around …

Haunted, Will Travel: “Divided, Fractured, And Barely Legible” The Nightmare-Self In Harrow The Ninth, Atiyana Ringling
Mythcon
My research intends to bring Mark Fisher’s 2012 definition of Hauntology into conversation with the sci-fi journey in Tamsyn Muir’s Harrow the Ninth and its titular character. Using the lens of this Mythcon 54 to focus on the physical and parallel mental journey of Harrow, the physical journey traveled tracks and maps the “lost future” of the world’s inhabitants and questions the extent to which the physical road traveled can mask or hide its destructive inception. “The River” and road traveled in the novel are the result of catastrophic consumption and transformation of the Solar System by the novel's Emperor. …

An Infinite Number Of Roads Diverged In A Wood: Robert Heinlein’S Maximalist Road Trip In The Number Of The Beast, Patrick Julian
Mythcon
Robert Heinlein, Grand Master of Speculative Fiction, was born in Butler, MO (one hour north of Route 66), raised in Kansas City, and lived much of his early adult life in Los Angeles, the westernmost terminus of Route 66. Given this proximity to the Mother Road, it’s no surprise that Heinlein spent a considerable portion of his career writing about various versions of the Road Trip, whether it was taken via foot, horse-drawn carriage, automobile or spaceship. The Roads Must Roll, his 3rd published short story (1940), name checks Route 66, while many of his early works of juvenile …

Who Do You Think You’Re Talking To? A Longitudinal Study Of How Disclosed Partner Identity Shapes Relational Communication With Ai Among College Students, Vito Anthony Borio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This study presents a longitudinal, two-condition, between-subjects experiment in which partner identity is disclosed as either human or AI in text-based chat; however, all participants (N = 60) interacted with the same chatbot. Informed by both Social Information Processing Theory (SIPT; Walther, 1995) and the Computers Are Social Actors Paradigm (CASA; Nass & Moon, 2000), this design draws on the former’s longitudinal measurement tradition to empirically test whether its predictions hold, using the latter as both a framework and procedure for investigating chatbot interactions. The findings inform both theories, indicating that perceived partner identity significantly affects perceptions of relational …
Noisy Neighbors: Assessing The Effects Of Anthropogenic Noise On Non-Native Vervet Monkeys’ (Chlorocebus Sabaeus) Behavioral Responses Via Predator-Call Playbacks In Dania Beach, Florida, Jaela Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
South Florida hosts a number of non-native wildlife species, including African monkeys. This study examined wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) in Dania Beach, Florida, to determine whether aircraft-related atmospheric noise affected their threat detection capabilities and behavioral responses. Using predator-call playbacks and focal scan samples, behavioral data was recorded across pre-, during-, and post-playback phases. Behaviors were labeled as nonvigilant or vigilant. The study also assessed whether responses differed between the local and novel predator calls as well as whether repeated trials suggested habituation over the course of the experiment. Results showed that the monkeys’ abilities to successfully …
