Relevance And Challenges Of Artificial Intelligence In Nursing Education, Dione Sandiford, Sara Thimmes
Relevance And Challenges Of Artificial Intelligence In Nursing Education, Dione Sandiford, Sara Thimmes
Biennial Convention (CONV)
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has become prominent in nursing education. The use of AI in nursing education includes virtual reality, AI-based simulations, virtual patients, and ChatGPT. These various uses of AI in the academic setting provide opportunities for nursing students to develop critical thinking skills, clinical reasoning, decision-making, and clinical judgment. While this may enhance student learning, and revolutionize nursing education and practice, it also presents challenges and risks. The purpose of this poster presentation is to bring to light the importance of AI in nursing education while stressing the risk that must be considered with its use. …

BACKGROUND: Recruitment of participants into research studies is commonly challenging and becomes more difficult when targeting underrepresented population groups. Recruiting individuals living in rural locations, must use appropriate strategies if the sample size is to be achieved. The aim of this case study was to explore factors associated with research capacity, and to determine their impact on recruitment strategies, including timeframe and participant recruitment outcomes.
METHODS: This case study investigated the recruitment outcomes of four rurally based research projects performed between 2016-2024. Participants were enrolled either directly by the researchers (face-to-face method [f2f]), or through General Practitioners as trusted local …

Taking Small Steps With Big Data: Exploring The Impact Of Education On Social Mobility, Yung Chun, Jenrose Fitzgerald, Jason Jabbari
Center for Social Development Research
Historically, education and workforce-development programs have relied on survey data or state-government administrative data to examine program impacts. However, surveys are costly, reasonable comparison groups can be difficult to identify, and results from analyses of a single state’s administrative data can seldom be generalized to enable broader conclusions. This brief discusses a research collaboration between the Center for Social Development, the National Student Clearinghouse, and a large credit bureau. Through this collaboration researchers used large, frequently updated, multi-type (i.e., “big”) data to examine the impact of education and certificate programs on social mobility, as well as racial and gender equity. …

Privacy As Professional Identity, Einat Albin
Privacy As Professional Identity, Einat Albin
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
This article explores an important course of action to safeguarding privacy in the workplace, grounded in the professional identity of workers and their corresponding moral and ethical duties towards clients or patients. Described as “privacy as professional identity,” this concept is developed through two key contributions. First, the article argues that workers who are ethically and legally obligated to protect the confidentiality and privacy of their clients or patients — such as psychologists and lawyers — also inherently safeguard their own personal privacy. This argument is substantiated through illustrative examples and anchored in theoretical frameworks concerning the right to privacy. …

Phase Equilibria Modeling Constraints On Channel Flow Of Metasedimentary Crust Beneath The Southeastern Tibetan Plateau, Govind Joshi, Gregory Dumond
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Lower crust of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau includes 100 s of km2-scale zones of low resistivity at 20-40 km-depths indicating the presence of melt +/- fluid +/- graphite. These zones coincide with interconnected zones of low shear wave velocity. Data from central and southeastern Tibet support the occurrence of meta-sedimentary felsic granulites in the lower crust along a backarc-like geothermal gradient. Phase equilibria modeling of average metasedimentary pelite and greywacke bulk compositions constrained by these geophysical data explored the impact of partial melting on shear wave velocity for a range of fluid content. Low shear wave velocities beneath southeastern Tibet …

Driver mutations in IDH1 and IDH2 are initiating events in the evolution of chondrosarcoma and several other cancer types. Here, we present evidence that mutant IDH1 is recurrently lost in metastatic central chondrosarcoma. This may reflect either relaxed positive selection for the mutant IDH1 locus, or negative selection for the hypermethylation phenotype later in tumor evolution. This finding highlights the challenge for therapeutic intervention by mutant IDH1 inhibitors in chondrosarcoma.

Introduction Three-quarters of mental health problems start before the age of 25. However, young people are the least likely to receive mental healthcare. Some young people (such as those from ethnic minorities) are even less likely to receive mental healthcare than others. Long-term impacts of mental health problems include poorer physical health, relationships, education and employment. We aim to elicit the views, experiences and needs of diverse young people (aged 16–24 years), to better understand (1) their experiences of under-representation, mental health and coping, (2) mechanisms that shape mental health trajectories and (3) how online arts and culture might be …

Despite being the standard-of-care treatment, neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) attains a complete response only in approximately half of the patients with triple negative breast cancer. Thus, methods to predict and optimize patient response to NAT are needed. Previously, we employed patient-specific MRI data to calibrate a biology-based mathematical model that describes cell movement, proliferation, and death due to drug at the tumor level and cell proliferation at an image voxel level. We now extend our approach by using MRI data to group voxels into "habitats" whereby tumor cells of a habitat share the same proliferation. With this approach, we now calibrate …

To maximize beneficial potassium (K) fertilizer use in irrigated soybean (Glycine max. (L.) Merr.) fields with spatially varying soil-test K (STK), the value of added information from more precise STK maps must be greater than the associated information collection costs. In eleven fields, we modeled the impact of soil sampling densities (SD) ranging from 2.2 samples ha-1 in the largest field (41.2 ha) to 13.59 samples ha-1 in the smallest field (7.4 ha) on STK maps with 0.4 ha grid size. The accuracy of profit-maximizing fertilizer rate prescription maps varied by SD and subsequent yield estimates using either uniform …

Antibiotic resistance of harmful microorganisms is recognized as a serious threat to human and animal health, which is worsened by the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, it remains challenging to identify ARGs in water samples and to distinguish intracellular (iARGs) and extracellular ARGs (eARGs). In this work, we present a feasibility study to use simple, practical methodologies to extract and distinguish ARGs in water samples using both filtration and centrifugation, followed by quantification using qPCR. Using both synthetic water samples and lake water samples, we demonstrated that the workflow reliably detected and quantified ARGs in synthetic samples. In …

Double-stranded DNA ends arise from external agents or cellular processes like transcription-replication collisions (TRCs), threatening genome stability. Here, we performed genomic CRISPRi screens to uncover DNA end formation factors in Escherichia coli. We discovered that translation-transcription decoupling causes DNA end formation through a TRC-dependent pathway, which is lethal when DNA end processing by RecBCD is disrupted, but not when recombination is disrupted. We find that TRCs cause replisome stalling followed by "rear-ending" from trailing replisomes which generates free DNA ends, rather than strand breaks. Surprisingly, these DNA ends are resolved through a process we call "replication reset", where the stalled …

Neurodevelopmental proteasomopathies are a group of disorders caused by variants in proteasome subunit genes, that disrupt protein homeostasis and brain development through poorly characterized mechanisms. Here, we report 26 distinct variants in PSMC5, encoding the AAA⁺ ATPase subunit PSMC5/RPT6, in individuals with syndromic neurodevelopmental conditions. Combining genetic, multi-omics and biochemical approaches across cellular models and Drosophila, we unveil the essential role of proteasomes in sustaining key cellular processes. Loss of PSMC5/RPT6 function impairs proteasome activity, leading to protein aggregation, disruption of mitochondrial homeostasis, and dysregulation of lipid metabolism and immune signaling. It also compromises synaptic balance, neuritogenesis, and neural progenitor …

Heart transplantation significantly enhances survival and quality of life for patients with end-stage heart failure. Despite advances in surgical and postoperative care, immune-mediated complications, acute graft rejection and cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), remain major barriers to long-term success. Acute rejection predominantly affects early posttransplant survival, whereas CAV becomes a leading cause of mortality in later years. The gold standards for diagnosis, endomyocardial biopsy for rejection and coronary angiography for CAV, are invasive and imperfect. Noninvasive multimodality imaging is increasingly used to complement or, in selected scenarios, defer invasive testing. Echocardiography with strain detects early myocardial dysfunction when ejection fraction is …

Critical Dialogue As A Decolonial Feminist Approach To Healing And Restoration In Antiracist Literacy Education, Dianne Wellington, Amy Walker
Critical Dialogue As A Decolonial Feminist Approach To Healing And Restoration In Antiracist Literacy Education, Dianne Wellington, Amy Walker
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
Antiracist work requires healing and restorative practices to sustain meaningful change. This study examines critical dialogue as a restorative practice in literacy education, using duoethnography to explore its role in antiracist efforts. Grounded in decolonial feminist research, we frame healing as an intergenerational movement and literacy education as a catalyst for transformation. Our findings advocate for restorative literacies that challenge systemic oppression, emphasizing relational, justice-driven practices to foster resilience, transformation, and coalition-building in academia. We offer implications for how literacy education can engage lived experiences, histories, and epistemologies to support individual and collective healing.
