Comparative Analysis Of Gut Microbiota In Post-Mortem Chronic Alcoholics Versus Minimal To No Alcohol Users In The Thai Population, Laiba Pervez
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Chronic alcohol consumption induces long-term disruption of the gut microbiota, contributing to inflammation, metabolic imbalance, and impaired intestinal integrity. This study investigated 24 postmortem gut microbiota samples from the Thai population, including 12 chronic alcoholic and 12 non-alcoholic cadavers, focusing on cecal and fecal samples to identify site-specific microbial signatures of alcohol-associated dysbiosis. Following DNA extraction, the V3–V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Data were processed in QIIME for OTU clustering and taxonomic profiling. Alpha (Shannon, Chao1, ACE) and beta (Bray–Curtis) diversity were analyzed with PERMANOVA (p< 0.05) while LEfSe, cladogram, and STAMP analyses identified differentially abundant taxa.. At the phylum level, alcoholic cecal samples (AC) showed a decrease in Firmicutes (59.07%) and increases in Proteobacteria (5.54%), Fusobacteria (8.48%), and Actinobacteria (2.78%) compared with controls (NAC). The rise in Actinobacteria was statistically significant. The class Bacilli was also elevated, reflecting a more oxygenated and inflammatory intestinal environment. At the genus level, Paeniclostridium was enriched in alcoholics, while the butyrate-producing Coprococcus was reduced, suggesting impaired SCFA metabolism and gut barrier function. In fecal samples (AF vs NAF), phylum-level differences were minimal, although Clostridium sensu stricto 1 was notably higher in alcoholics, consistent with inflammation-associated dysbiosis. When comparing gut regions, distinct spatial heterogeneity was observed. Within the alcoholic group, Firmicutes were more abundant in cecum, while Actinobacteria were lower compared to feces. Among controls, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes were enriched in feces, whereas Firmicutes predominated in the cecum. Alpha diversity analysis using ACE and Chao1 indices showed significant differences between cecal and fecal samples of the control group. Overall, postmortem gut microbiota retained distinct alcoholassociated signatures, with the cecum preserving clearer microbial patterns than feces. These findings highlight the cecum’s potential as a reliable site for detecting alcohol-related dysbiosis in forensics.

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background : Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which affects the immune system of individuals who are living with it. Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, causes a spectrum of clinical manifestations from asymptomatic to long-term sequelae. Both diseases can be vertically transmitted if left undetected and untreated. Routine testing for HIV and syphilis in all pregnant women during antenatal care consultation (ANC) is recommended. Yet, the Philippines’ testing uptake is only 29% for HIV and 30% for syphilis in 2024. The mother-to-child transmission estimates, as reported by UNAIDS, are 45% despite …
Immunophenotype In Major Depressive Disorder Patient, Muanpetch Rachayon
Immunophenotype In Major Depressive Disorder Patient, Muanpetch Rachayon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is associated with immune dysregulation, yet the combined effects of T-cell activation, T regulatory (Treg) cell deficits, and the failure of immune checkpoint mechanisms on illness severity remain unclear. This research investigated these factors in patients with acute MDD compared with healthy participants. Using multi-parameter flow cytometry, we analyzed T-cell markers of activation (CD40L, CD71), regulation (CD152, GARP), apoptosis (CD95), and exhaustion (TIM3) under unstimulated and stimulated conditions; cytokine levels were also measured. Patients showed increased activated T helper and cytotoxic T-cells (CD4+CD40L+, CD8+CD40L+) and reduced Tregs, with this imbalance strongly predicting depression severity. Lower CD95 …

Comparative Analysis Of The Gut Microbiome Of Biting Midges, Putative Vectors Of Leishmaniasis In Endemic Areas Of Thailand, Mawra Nadeem
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Vector-borne diseases caused by Leishmania and related protozoan parasites are emerging public health concerns in Thailand. While phlebotomine sand flies are the classical vectors of Leishmania, increasing evidence suggests that other biting Diptera, particularly Forcipomyia (Lasiohelea) and Culicoides midges, may also participate in the transmission of Leishmania (Mundinia) species. However, the species diversity, microbiome composition, and parasite infection status of these midges in Thailand remain poorly understood. This thesis presents the first integrative investigation combining molecular species identification, pathogen screening, and microbiome characterization of biting midges collected from multiple regions of Thailand. Female Forcipomyia (Lasiohelea) specimens from southern Thailand were …

"Students Can’T Write": An Assumption In Search Of Evidence, Carl Schlachte
"Students Can’T Write": An Assumption In Search Of Evidence, Carl Schlachte
Publications and Research
This article examines a set of 122 sources, from 1913 to the present, which claim that students "can’t write," finding that a significant proportion of these sources offer no evidence to support this claim. But even among those sources that do offer evidence, most of the support offered relies on measures few writing teachers would accept, like anecdotal claims, surface-level correctness, or standardized tests. As a result, this article questions how the claim that students can’t write has been allowed to stand for so long, even in scholarship, and suggests ways for writing teachers to resist its false logic.
