The Importance Of Contrast Sensitivity, Color Vision, And Electrophysiological Testing In Clinical And Occupational Settings, Frances Silva Aug 2023

The Importance Of Contrast Sensitivity, Color Vision, And Electrophysiological Testing In Clinical And Occupational Settings, Frances Silva

Theses & Dissertations

Visual acuity (VA) is universally accepted as the gold standard metric for ocular vision and function. Contrast sensitivity (CS), color vision, and electrophysiological testing for clinical and occupational settings are warranted despite being deemed ancillary and minimally utilized by clinicians. These assessments provide essential information to subjectively and objectively quantify and obtain optimal functional vision. They are useful for baseline data and monitoring hereditary and progressive ocular conditions and cognitive function. The studies in this dissertation highlight the value of contrast sensitivity, color vision, and cone specific electrophysiological testing, as well as the novel metrics obtained with potential practical clinical …

Implementation Of An Initiative To Standardize Abdominal Binder Use In Postoperative Cesarean Section Patients: A Program Evaluation., Sarah Cohron

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

A cesarean section is a major abdominal surgery with a unique recovery profile. The patient must recover from surgery while simultaneously coping with a major life event: the birth of a new baby. The utilization of pain management techniques with as few side effects as possible is paramount to ensure optimal maternal and newborn outcomes (Karlström et. al., 2007; Eisenach et. al., 2008). On an inpatient mother/baby unit at a high-risk urban hospital in Louisville, Kentucky approximately 66 babies are born via cesarean section every month (Mattingly, 2021). However, in the fall of 2021, it was discovered that there was …

A Computational Kinetics Model To Quantify Radiation Induced Chemical Products Of Atmospheric Gas Mixtures, Patrick Ables Aug 2023

A Computational Kinetics Model To Quantify Radiation Induced Chemical Products Of Atmospheric Gas Mixtures, Patrick Ables

Dissertations

This research is focused on the development of a computational model which will calculate the effects of radiation on the chemical composition of the atmosphere. The approach utilizes the open-source chemical kinetics toolkit Cantera to model the creation of radiation-induced reactant species within irradiated air mixtures. Chemical solutions are iteratively stepped toward chemical equilibrium within a ‘constantly stirred’ (homogeneous) reactor of fixed volume. Three different radiation chemistry models are implemented in several different pulsed and continuous radiation schemes. The first model includes the mechanisms and rates of a pulse radiation model from the literature to test the validity of the …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

As natural disasters become more frequent due to climate change, understanding the biological impact of these ecological catastrophes on wild populations becomes increasingly pertinent. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), or random deviations from bilateral symmetry, is reflective of developmental instability and has long been positively associated with increases in environmental stress. This study investigates craniofacial FA in a population of free-ranging rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) that has experienced multiple Category 3 hurricanes since the colony's inception on Cayo Santiago, including 275 individuals from ages 9 months to 31 years (F = 154; M = 121). Using geometric morphometrics to quantify …

Arabic Dysarthric Speech Recognition Using Adversarial And Signal-Based Augmentation, Massa Baali, Ibrahim Almakky, Shady Shehata, Fakhri Karray

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Despite major advancements in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), the state-of-the-art ASR systems struggle to deal with impaired speech even with high-resource languages. In Arabic, this challenge gets amplified, with added complexities in collecting data from dysarthric speakers. In this paper, we aim to improve the performance of Arabic dysarthric automatic speech recognition through a multi-stage augmentation approach. To this effect, we first propose a signal-based approach to generate dysarthric Arabic speech from healthy Arabic speech by modifying its speed and tempo. We also propose a second stage Parallel Wave Generative (PWG) adversarial model that is trained on an English dysarthric …

A Help Or Hindrance? Team Leader Behaviors And The Team Climate Of Innovation, Matthew Brady Johnson Aug 2023

A Help Or Hindrance? Team Leader Behaviors And The Team Climate Of Innovation, Matthew Brady Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

While the nature of teamwork in organizations is ever-evolving, the utilization of teams in some form has continued to increase over the past several decades. While creativity is generally regarded as an individual-level phenomenon, innovation tends to occur as an emergent process at the team level, so rather than only hiring and rewarding star performers, organizations should cultivate and protect the team’s climate for innovation. A particularly impactful contextual factor in team climate is the team leader’s behavior. Therefore, the team leader’s contribution to the climate should work to promote innovation rather than discourage it. A cross-sectional, correlational study surveyed …

Vulnerable Road Users Transit Optimization With Healthcare Privatization (Vrutop), Hyoshin Park Ph.D.

Center for Advanced Transportation Mobility

This research focuses on improving the transit service of vulnerable road users while addressing recent trends in Medicaid transformation. One of the most notorious issues is the difficulty of knowing how much added time cushion should be considered for picking-up each user and transit time. This temporal time uncertainty will be uniquely formulated by taking advantage of the data collected before and after the Medicaid transformation, which will make this research a pioneer in demand response transportation systems. From the user’s perspective, an adaptive trip planner considers the real-time impact of environment changes on pedestrian route choice preferences and tolerance …

Pharmacological And Pharmacokinetic Studies Of A KCa2.2 Positive Allosteric Modulator, Mohammad Asikur Rahman Aug 2023

Pharmacological And Pharmacokinetic Studies Of A KCa2.2 Positive Allosteric Modulator, Mohammad Asikur Rahman

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Small-conductance Ca2+-activated potassium channels (KCa2.x) family is widely expressed in neurons, the heart, and endothelial cells. KCa2.x channels are named small conductance Ca2+-activated potassium channels due to their comparatively low single-channel conductance and are activated solely by rises in intracellular Ca2+. The family has three subtypes: KCa2.1, KCa2.2, and KCa2.3, encoded by KCNN1, KCNN2, and KCNN3 genes, respectively. KCa2.x channels regulate neuronal excitability and responsiveness to synaptic input patterns. Small-conductance Ca2+-activated potassium channels subtype 2 (KCa2.2, …

Why Attitudes Are Usually Mutual: A Possible Mathematical Explanation, Julio C. Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich Aug 2023

Why Attitudes Are Usually Mutual: A Possible Mathematical Explanation, Julio C. Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this paper, we provide a possible mathematical explanation of why people's attitude to each other is usually mutual: we usually have good attitude who those who have good feelings towards us, and we usually have negative attitudes towards those who have negative feelings towards, Several mathematical explanations of this mutuality have been proposed, but they are based on specific approximate mathematical models of human (and animal) interaction. It is desirable to have a solid mathematical explanation that would not depend on such approximate models. In this paper, we show that a recent mathematical result about relation algebras can lead …

Paradoxical Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (Tnf-Α) Inhibitor-Induced Psoriasis: A Systematic Review Of Pathogenesis, Clinical Presentation, And Treatment., Aditi Chokshi, Michelle Demory Beckler, Anita Laloo, Marc M. Kesselman

HPD Articles

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors have been shown to be well tolerated among patients with rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis. Meanwhile, more recently, clinical practice and research efforts have uncovered increasing cases of psoriatic lesion development tied to initiating treatment with a TNF-α inhibitor. The underlying mechanisms associated with this occurrence have yet to be fully elucidated. A review and analysis of cases of paradoxical psoriasis currently published in the literature is warranted. In addition, exploring possible mechanisms of action and potential treatment options associated with favorable outcomes is much needed. A systematic literature review was performed utilizing …

Microglial Response To Glucocorticoids During Chronic Sleep Fragmentation, Christian Chelson Aug 2023

Microglial Response To Glucocorticoids During Chronic Sleep Fragmentation, Christian Chelson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Sleep is one of the body’s greatest and most basic needs. Chronic sleep loss (<6 hours a day) is linked to many cardiovascular issues, diabetes, and inflammatory conditions and has been shown to lower life expectancy. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a complication that causes sleep fragmentation in >8% of adults from developed countries, and many with OSA may be unaware of their condition. Having long-term OSA is linked to neuroinflammation caused by activated microglia in the brain, but the mechanics of this inflammation are not well understood. It is known that glucocorticoids, steroid hormones produced and released from the adrenal glands, have a suppressive effect on microglia. The purpose of this study is to explore the role that glucocorticoids have upon microglia activation induced by chronic sleep fragmentation (SF). C57BL/6J mice were …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Humans show an attention bias toward emotional versus neutral information, which is considered an adaptive pattern of information processing. Deviations from this pattern have been observed in children with socially withdrawn behaviors, with most research being conducted in controlled settings among children from urban areas. The goal of the current study was to examine the cross-cultural applicability of two eye-tracking-based measures in assessing attention biases and their relations to children's symptoms of socially withdrawn behaviors in two independent and diverse samples of preschool children. The cross-cultural comparison was conducted between the Navajo Birth Cohort study (NBCS), an indigenous cohort with …

Distribution And Habitat Associations Of The Georgia Satyr (Neonympha Areolatus) In Arkansas, Kristi Patterson

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

The Georgia satyr (Neonympha areolatus) is a small sedentary butterfly that is rare in Arkansas. Currently, the exact locations of this butterfly in Arkansas are unknown, along with the habitat characteristics associated with their presence. In order to determine these unknowns, I completed 104 surveys across seven different wildlife management areas in southern Arkansas. Pollard-Yates transects were conducted at each study site, and weather variables were recorded before each survey. Vegetation surveys were also completed at each site, and where each Georgia satyr was identified. Generalized linear models (GLM) were created to identify what parameters are important for …

Behavioral Response To Conspecific Sounds In Loricariid Catfishes (Pterygoplichtys Pardalis And Otocinclus Vittatus), Hephzibah Obafunmiso

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Sound production is a means of communication among many fish species. In fishes, sound is produced through various mechanisms, but in the family Loricariidae, known as armored suckermouth catfishes, sound is produced primarily through pectoral fin spine stridulation. Previous experiments have described the sounds produced and shown the mechanism of sound production in two species of loricariid catfishes, Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps and Otocinclus affinis, but the functional significance of loricariid sounds is still unknown. To address this question, I examined the behavioral responses of Pterygoplichthys pardalis and Otocinclus vittatus to conspecific calls. Individual fish (N=10 for P. pardalis) or groups …
