Relationships Between Intimate Partner Violence And Alaskan Women's Health, Ingrid Johnson, Andrew Gonzalez
Relationships Between Intimate Partner Violence And Alaskan Women's Health, Ingrid Johnson, Andrew Gonzalez
AJiC Alaska Victimization Survey
This report details a sample of Alaskan women's experiences with psychological, physical, and sexual harm by an intimate partner, and the relationships between those experiences and their current physical and mental health. These analyses of Alaska Victimization Survey (AVS) data are comprised of almost 13,000 survey responses from adult, non-institutionalized Alaskan women. The findings confirm those of prior, non-Alaska based research that all types of historical and recent intimate partner violence (IPV) are linked to victims’ current physical and mental health. Non-physical IPV has the same negative relationships with various health status indicators as physical IPV: Control, threats, and psychological …

Assessment Of Ethanol And Nicotine Interactions Using A Reinforcer Demand Modeling With Grouped And Individual Levels Of Analyses In A Long-Access Self-Administration Model Using Male Rats, Christopher L. Robison, Nicole Cova, Victoria Madore, Tyler Allen, Scott T. Barrett, Sergios Charntikov
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Previous reports have indicated the reciprocal effects of nicotine and ethanol on their rewarding and reinforcing properties, but studies using methodological approaches resembling substance use in vulnerable populations are lacking. In our study, rats first self-administered ethanol, and their sensitivity to ethanol’s reinforcing effects was assessed using a reinforcer demand modeling approach. Subsequently, rats were equipped with intravenous catheters to self-administer nicotine, and their sensitivity to nicotine’s reinforcing effects was evaluated using the same approach. In the final phase, rats were allowed to self-administer ethanol and nicotine concurrently, investigating the influence of one substance on the rate of responding for …

Parenting and pregnancy in the context of substance use is a complicated topic. Many public health officials, social workers, policy makers, and community members want to provide effective support and treatment for the child and for the parent. But when stigma, prejudice, or misinformation occur, parents who use substances can be exposed to added barriers to accessing care and support. This fact sheet addresses solutions to these barriers.

Older people are increasing in number globally, and they are likely to have mental health problems, including de- pression. In this population, the risk of having depressive symptoms is very high due to multidimensional factors, but these symptoms are often undertreated. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of de- pressive symptoms among community-dwelling older people living on the East Coast of Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted in several areas of the state of Terengganu based on multilayered stratified sampling. A total of 240 participants were randomly selected. Several instruments were employed, such as the Geriatric …

Sleep Quality And Stress Levels Among Nurses: A Single Center Study, Siti Zuhaidah Shahadan, Mohamad Firdaus Mohamad Ismail, Khalidah Nadhirah Kamaruzaman
Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia
The issue of nurses' sleep quality, which has a significant impact on their mental health, has not received enough attention. Nurses’ stress and mental health can affect patient care, so poor sleep quality in nurses can lead to stress and patient harm. Thus, this study examines the relationship between sleep quality and stress in nurses at a university hospital in Kuantan, Malaysia. This cross-sectional study used convenience sampling. A total of 101 nurses in the hospital were recruited to complete a series of questionnaires, including the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and the depression anxiety stress scale 21 (DASS21). The COVID-19 pandemic and the sudden switch from conventional to virtual classes allegedly raised students' risk of mental health illnesses, adversely influencing their academic engagement and learning outcomes. Nursing students in Malaysia, especially those enrolled in universities in Sabah, have traditionally been accustomed to a conventional face- to-face teaching and learning approach. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, e-learning or online classes have become one of the learning methods for university nursing students in Sabah, either while they are on campus or at home, to obtain access for educational purposes. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between …

Exploring The Influence Of Self-Control And Assimilation On Intimate Partner Violence: A Longitudinal Analysis, Fei Luo, Kimberly D. Dodson, Heather Alaniz-Salas
Journal of Criminal Justice and Law
Prior scholarly inquiry into victimization consistently highlighted the significance of low self-control as a predisposing factor for heightened vulnerability to victimization. While existing literature has extensively examined the influence of low self-control across diverse demographic samples, a notable gap exists in the body of research concerning the effect of low self-control on intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and the role of assimilation. This study utilizes two waves of Add Health data to examine the relationship between low self-control and IPV victimization as well as the influence of assimilation on this association. Findings from the logistic regressions reveal that low self-control …
The Means Of Confronting Alienation In Poetry Of "Bin Bard", Talib Mahir Fahad
The Means Of Confronting Alienation In Poetry Of "Bin Bard", Talib Mahir Fahad
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The poetic experience of most poets made them sing poetically towards the circumstances they lived, which often led them to emigrate from this living reality, but some poets took his poetics to stand up to this difficult expatriation and confront it in order to avoid its psychological and social consequences. Among these poets was Bashar Bin Bard, and here the research emerged to find out the means of this poet in facing alienation, while identifying such poetic samples that proved these means according

The Social Determinants Of Health And Genocide: Towards A Public Health Integrated Framework Of Genocide And Mass Violence, Sian Persad, Cheng Xu
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This paper makes a normative argument about transformations of public health as a necessary condition required in any transitional justice process. We seek to bridge the gap between the fields of genocide and public health to understand the recursive relationship between genocide and the social determinants of health. We show that structures and institutions established during genocide create enduring impacts on the public health outcomes of victim and survivor groups even after the ousting of the original perpetrators. Our comparative analysis of the Rwandan Genocide and the colonial genocide of Indigenous communities in Canada surveys the available public health literature …

Propofol And Kearns-Sayre Syndrome: An Idiographic Approach, Madan M. Maddali, Thushara D. Munasinghe, Is'haq Al Aamri, Ismail A. Al-Abri, Samir Al-Adawi
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
With the focus on an idiographic approach whereby the observations incorporated the various dimensions of individual functioning ‘top-down’ to ‘bottom-up’, this case report describes the successful management of a 14-year-old girl with Kearns-Sayre syndrome and Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen disease requiring a transvenous permanent pacemaker implantation for complete heart block. The patient presented to a tertiary care centre in Muscat, Oman, in 2023 seeking consultation. The current idiographic approach appears to have a heuristic value for 2 interrelated reasons. Firstly, it is unlikely that even tertiary care units can accrue such rare presentations and scrutinise them under nomothetic approach. Secondly, by employing the …

Safety In Flight Training - An Analysis Of The Ntsb Data 2014-2018, Michael F. Walach
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
There were 7,500 safety events in the NTSB data sets from 2013-2018. These events were analyzed using Chi-square, Cramer’s V, and the odds ratio. Major findings in the study determined that while pilots crash aircraft for the same reasons whether they are in a training environment or not, student pilots are typically less likely to be killed, or seriously injured. The aircraft that student pilots fly however, do not share the same relative safety in some event types. Students destroy and substantially damage more aircraft than their non-training counterparts in abnormal runway contact events. The top five causes of safety …

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
In the United States, an increasing number of aspiring commercial airline pilots are teaching as Certificated Flight Instructors, presumably to reach the minimum required flight hours and move into airline flight operations. High-quality training is the foundation of a high-quality globalized aviation workforce, yet there has been a persistent lack of systemic in-depth guidance surrounding how instructors are taught how to teach aviation subject matter, justifying the need for incorporating the use of evidence-based and promising practices from education fields into flight instruction. In this conceptual article, we outline the integral components and the research basis of the universal design …
Experience Levels Forcing A Change In Aviation Planning, Jason A. Powell, Elizabeth Crockett
Experience Levels Forcing A Change In Aviation Planning, Jason A. Powell, Elizabeth Crockett
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
This theoretical article evaluates the changing dynamics caused by high turnover in aviation and how the lower level of experience impacts aeronautical companies' organizational planning and partnerships. The aviation organization must adapt managerial practices and alter training capability and procedures to ensure appropriate skill levels. Without proper planning, the company will have an imbalance of skills and accept more risk to operations. The aviation organization may be unable to adapt current scheduling practices to properly prepare the aircrew for challenging situations or sufficiently train maintenance personnel. The result is a need to leverage strategic partnerships, alter management practices toward personnel …

Don’T Say Gay Or God: How Federal Law Threatens Student Religious Rights And Fails To Protect Lgbtq Students, Stephen Mcloughlin
BYU Law Review
Federal law requires schools to protect students from discrimination based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. This protection is based on the principle that students must be free to explore their self-identity within the school environment as part of their intellectual development. Thus, schools must eliminate speech that threatens LGBTQ students based on their gender identity or sexual orientation. However, schools must also protect free speech and religious rights. Indeed, the expression of religious beliefs is also crucial to intellectual growth. Thus, schools must develop student speech policies that protect LGBTQ students from harmful speech while protecting controversial religious …
The Impact Of Religion And Religious Organizations, Elizabeth A. Clark
The Impact Of Religion And Religious Organizations, Elizabeth A. Clark
BYU Law Review
Legal scholars often see religion as a mere private preference, choice, value, or identity with no more meaning or positive social impact than any other preference, choice, value, or identity. If anything, religion’s negative impacts are often highlighted. For example, a focus on the harms of religion often underlies contemporary legal debates about religious exemptions and tensions between religious rights and LGBTQ rights or reproductive rights. Conversely, scholars in other fields have documented religion’s distinctive pro-social features, proposing mechanisms by which religion has unique positive impacts on individuals, families, and society. While recognizing that, for its practitioners, religion has its …

School of Psychology
The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in widespread anxiety, fear and depression, yet focussing only on these negative issues may obscure the opportunity to promote positivity and resilience. Traumatic events can often result in positive life changes (termed adversarial growth) though there is little evidence in the context of pandemics, and no previous studies in Covid-19 with the general public. The present research investigated whether adversarial growth was perceived in Covid-19 and whether this could account for variance in wellbeing, over and above effects of personality traits. Participants recruited from the UK public (N = 183) completed the Big Five Personality …

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
As the global COVID-19 rages around and world, economic uncertainty increases, and green and sustainable development is facing tough challenges. Based on a panel data of 30 Chinese provinces from January to December 2020, we investigate the short-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on China’s carbon emissions. The results indicate that carbon emissions in China decreased considerably during the COVID-19 outbreak. This finding remains robust after replacing the core variables. The negative impact of COVID-19 on China’s carbon emissions is not sustainable in the long run though. This study provides valuable recommendations for China and other countries to achieve green …
