Learning Developers As Writers: The Four Tendencies Framework To Get Writing, Alicja Syska, Carina Buckley
Learning Developers As Writers: The Four Tendencies Framework To Get Writing, Alicja Syska, Carina Buckley
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Although writing is a key element of scholarly activity, Learning Development positioning within the third space means that Learning Developers expectations for writing may be internal as much as external, or a combination of the two, or neither. All too often, the lack of time is cited as a reason to not write, yet developing strategies to overcome this particular barrier does not give the whole story. Rather, it is necessary to understand our relationship with writing, our needs and proclivities, and also our inhibitions. This chapter presents a framework for understanding our writing tendencies, so we can then identify …

Unlocking Social Innovation In Xr For Healthcare In Coastal Communities, Alejandro Veliz Reyes, Marius N. Varga, Hannah Bradwell, Rory Baxter
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This position paper reconsiders the 'social' aspect of XR systems for healthcare, often developed following a 'problem-solution' approach that neglects sociocultural factors affecting their codesign and successful adoption. Focusing on coastal and rural communities, we review and present key principles to consider when codesigning XR systems with marginalised groups. Our work stems from two projects funded by UK Research & Innovation that aim to promote healthy ageing in coastal communities.

Contact lens (CL) practice is an ever-changing field with clinical knowledge, techniques and equipment continuously evolving. These new developments are backed with clinical trials and research to ensure that practitioners feel confident that there is an evidence base to support these advances. Evidence-based practice is now a crucial part of CL practice, and its importance also filters down to CL education. For example, lectures are one of the most popular tools for an educator but, is standing at the front of a lecture theatre full of students a more effective way of teaching than providing the same material for students …

Objective Large-scale, multisite hospital improvement initiatives can advance high-quality care for patients. Implementation support is key to adoption of change in this context. Strategies that foster collaboration within local teams, across sites and between initiative developers and users are important. However not all implementation strategies are successful in all settings, sometimes realising poor or unintended outcomes. Our objective here is to develop guiding principles for effective collaborative implementation strategies for multi-site hospital initiatives. Design Mixed-method realist evaluation. Realist studies aim to examine the underlying theories that explain differing outcomes, identifying mechanisms and contextual factors that may trigger them. Setting We …

Introduction Surgical trainees at all stages are mandated to use workplace-based assessments (WBAs) to gain feedback from their trainers. Direct observation of procedural skills (DOPS) is a tool to assess hands-on surgical skills. This review of the literature seeks to ascertain how valid DOPS are as an assessment tool for the procedural skills of surgical trainees according to the American Psychology Association (APA) validity framework. Methods Relevant literature was identified through a structured search of Medline, CINAHL and Web of Science databases, with further papers included on citation review. Following this, papers meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included …
Transition Theory And The Emotional Journey To Medical Educator Identity: A Qualitative Interview Study, J Browne, T Collett
Transition Theory And The Emotional Journey To Medical Educator Identity: A Qualitative Interview Study, J Browne, T Collett
Peninsula Medical School
Background. Medical academia is in crisis, with fewer people entering and growing concern at numbers leaving. While faculty development is often seen as part of the solution, there are significant issues with faculty not engaging with and resisting development opportunities. Lack of motivation may be linked to what might be called a ‘weak’ educator identity. We studied medical educators' experiences of career development to gain further insights into: how professional identity may develop; individuals' accompanying emotional responses to perceived identity change; and consideration of the accompanying temporal dimensions. Drawing on new materialist sociology, we explore medical educator identity formation in …

Building Personal Friendships In A Multicultural Society, Fatemah Almadani
Building Personal Friendships In A Multicultural Society, Fatemah Almadani
Theses and Dissertations
Friendship ranks highly among the social issues that develop and creates a stable andprosperous society. However, people tend to focus more on individuals who share social values while making friends. On the other hand, in a multicultural society, people work, leave, or learn together to share such values. The diversity of the origin of people living in the United States (US), especially in major cities, varies significantly regarding race, ethnicity, and religion, resulting in super-diverse urban setups. This study examined the multicultural friendship between international Arab students studying in the US and their American counterparts. The study was guided by …

Frontal Variant Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Narrative Synthesis, Sarah Salo
School of Psychology
BackgroundFrontal variant Alzheimer's disease (fvAD) is considered a rare form of Alzheimer's disease (AD) which may be misdiagnosed as behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). The literature has tended to conflate behavioural and executive dysfunction in fvAD cohorts and uses both AD diagnostic criteria and bvFTD diagnostic criteria to classify fvAD cohorts. The primary aim of this narrative synthesis was to summarise neuropsychological findings in fvAD cohorts in the context of established AD pathology.MethodsEMBASE, PsycINFO, PROQUEST and MEDLINE databases were searched for studies eligible for inclusion. Studies with both neuropsychological and biomarker evidence were included in the final narrative synthesis.ResultsTen studies …

There is a notable lack of evidence on what constitutes good practice in remote quantitative data collection from research participants with dementia. During the COVID-19 pandemic face-to-face research became problematic, especially where participants were older and more at risk of infection. The DETERMIND-C19 study, a large cohort study of people with dementia, switched to telephone data collection over this period. This paper explores the experiences of researchers who collected quantitative data over the telephone from people with dementia during the first COVID-19 lockdowns in England. The aim was to learn from these experiences, share insights and inform future research practice …

Human behaviors and attitudes play a significant role in cybersecurity. However, studies to quantify the impact of such behaviors and attitudes are scarce, and they are not always considered when developing mitigation strategies. To compensate for this, we have looked into a large sample of employees with different levels of expertise and backgrounds across a variety of industrial sectors and organizations. We have found that age and job role constitute the main human factors associated with social media cybersecurity risks. We can confirm that the youngest employees are the most risk prone within an organization, and the employees working in …

BackgroundAltered thalamic volumes and resting state (RS) functional connectivity (FC) might be associated with physical activity (PA) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in people with progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS).ObjectivesTo assess thalamic structural and functional alterations and investigate their correlations with PA/CRF levels in people with PMS.MethodsSeven-day accelerometry and cardiopulmonary exercise testing were used to assess PA/CRF levels in 91 persons with PMS. They underwent 3.0 T structural and RS fMRI acquisition with 37 age/sex-matched healthy controls (HC). Between-group comparisons of MRI measures and their correlations with PA/CRF variables were assessed.ResultsPMS people had lower volumes compared to HC (all p < 0.001). At corrected threshold, PMS showed decreased intra- and inter-thalamic RS FC, and increased RS FC between the thalamus and the hippocampus, bilaterally. At uncorrected threshold, decreased thalamic RS FC with caudate nucleus, cerebellum and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), as well as increased thalamic RS FC with occipital regions, were also detected. Lower CRF, measured as peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), correlated with lower white matter volume (r = 0.31, p = 0.03). Moreover, lower levels of light PA correlated with increased thalamic RS FC with the right hippocampus (r = − 0.3, p = 0.05).DiscussionPeople with PMS showed widespread brain atrophy, as well as pronounced intra-thalamic and thalamo-hippocampal RS FC abnormalities. White matter atrophy correlated with CRF, while increased thalamo-hippocampal RS FC was associated to worse PA levels. Thalamic RS FC might be used to monitor physical impairment and efficacy of rehabilitative and disease-modifying treatments in future studies.

A preregistered meta-analysis, including 244 effect sizes from 85 field audits and 361,645 individual job applications, tested for gender bias in hiring practices in female-stereotypical and gender-balanced as well as male-stereotypical jobs from 1976 to 2020. A “red team” of independent experts was recruited to increase the rigor and robustness of our meta-analytic approach. A forecasting survey further examined whether laypeople (n = 499 nationally representative adults) and scientists (n = 312) could predict the results. Forecasters correctly anticipated reductions in discrimination against female candidates over time. However, both scientists and laypeople overestimated the continuation of bias against female candidates. …
