An Analysis Of The Statewide Shortage Of Aba Professionals In New York, Leanna S. Mellon, Noor Syed, Lauren Lestremau Allen

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Support services for many Autistic students in schools is critical. Behavior analysts are one type of service provider who offer support services in and outside of school settings to Autistic students. As behavioral support services are increasing in educational settings, it is important to ensure there are a sufficient number of professionals trained to provide high quality and compassionate support. However, there may not be enough state licensed providers to meet the growing need of students across the state of New York (NY). The supply of state licensed behavior analysts (LBAs) was calculated for the state of NY, its six …

Teacher Certification During Multiple Pandemics In The Epicenter Of It All, Deborah Greenblatt 4509457 Nov 2023

Teacher Certification During Multiple Pandemics In The Epicenter Of It All, Deborah Greenblatt 4509457

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Teacher certification exams were put on hold as New York City became the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis in March of 2020. State officials closed testing centers and school buildings, and teacher candidates began to panic as administrators at their student teaching placements worked feverishly to adjust. This changed teacher candidates’ ability to complete the performance assessment required for certification (edTPA). Concurrently, COVID-19 was disproportionally affecting the Black community (Phillips et al., 2020) and areas with limited financial resources. Based on the demographics of students at The City University of New York, there were extensive health challenges for many of …

The Other Fifty Percent: Expressions From Special Education Teachers About Why They Persist In The Profession, Laron A. Scott, Christine Powell, Lauren Bruno, Christopher J. Cormier, Joshua P. Taylor, Katherine Brendli

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

We examined reasons special educators are motivated to persist in the profession despite challenges that often lead to attrition for this group. Participants were 21 special education teachers with six or more years of teaching experience across multiple grade levels. Data were collected via the Zoom virtual meeting platform with four focus groups. Semi-structured interview techniques were used, and data were analyzed using deductive coding procedures. Participants shared external, employment, and personal factors associated with Billingsley’s (1993) career decision framework that influenced their persistence, such as supports from school administrators with expertise in special education law, passion for students and …

“I Changed My Mind”: Exploring Why College Students Change Majors To Become Teachers, Ross Bussell Nov 2023

“I Changed My Mind”: Exploring Why College Students Change Majors To Become Teachers, Ross Bussell

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

While teacher education programs have long studied what draws students to choose a career in teaching, a less studied aspect of teacher candidates relates to students who change majors to become teachers. As a phenomenon that is common in teacher preparation, I am interested in better understanding why this happens. This article centers around six participants who began college choosing a science major, changing their course of study after at least one full year. Through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, a discussion of what led the participants to change majors, what they were looking for when deciding to become teachers, and …

What’S In A Word? A Study Of Emotional Valence, Trisha Patel, Cameron Smith, Olivia Williams, Raul Rodriguez-Calva Nov 2023

What’S In A Word? A Study Of Emotional Valence, Trisha Patel, Cameron Smith, Olivia Williams, Raul Rodriguez-Calva

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Cognitive stress affects humans mentally and physically, and specifically may impact emotional recognition. Previous studies have focused on the perceived emotional valence of nouns vs. adjectives and the emotional recognition of photographs. While this has led to the creation of an emotional valence database, there has yet to be a study to explore how stress can change perceived emotional valence. Using data from the Affective Norms for English Words (ANEW), the Portland Arithmetic Stress Test (PAST), and the Montreal Imaging Stress Task (MIST), a study was created to explore how participants emotional valence of words would change after being placed …

Blind Mind? How Visual Imagery Affects Visual Processes, Katja Gehr, Molly Georgas Nov 2023

Blind Mind? How Visual Imagery Affects Visual Processes, Katja Gehr, Molly Georgas

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Visual imagery exists on a spectrum: some individuals have very vivid and clear images, and others have very little to no visual imagery, which is the case in a condition called aphantasia. There is a current void in the literature relating to mental imagery when identifying or generating emotions and how attentional bias could impact emotional processing. We intend to investigate the effects of visual imagery on emotion processing using a dot-probe with emotional facial and word stimuli and an emotional priming task developed by Bulter and colleagues (2008). We hypothesize that: (1) high imagers will show a higher negative …

Can You Hand-Le These Emotions? An Investigation On Hemispheric Dominance With Exposure To Visual Stimuli., Youstina Tadros, Hannah Potts, Savannah Campbell, Siena Deangelo, Carole Scherling Phd

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Understanding dominant handedness has important implications for surgery planning and patient groups like stroke (Agarwal, 2016; Harris & Eng, 2006). Right-handers predominantly present left-hemisphere language dominance (Knecht, 2000), while left-handers present bilateral or right hemisphere language dominance (Bidula, 2017). Hemispheric lateralization of function also extends to other cognitive domains, such as emotional processing, where there is one major theory. The valence lateralization hypothesis, looking at positive or negative emotional qualities, suggests left hemispheric dominance for positive emotions and right dominance for negative ones (Palomero-Gallagher, 2022). Similar to language hemispheric dominance, emotional processing may be lateralized in the brain according to …

Psychology: A Newly Developed Scale On Introversion, Emily Cloud, Niya Mckinley, Jenna Jemtrud, Mackenzie Cosgriff Nov 2023

Psychology: A Newly Developed Scale On Introversion, Emily Cloud, Niya Mckinley, Jenna Jemtrud, Mackenzie Cosgriff

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Introversion, the “preoccupation with inner ideas and emotions” (Henjum, 1982, pp. 39-40), is underrepresented in research. It has been considered in research and media to be a less desirable trait and failed achievement of extraversion (Noya & Vernon, 2019). Additionally, many measures fail to accurately present introversion as its own construct, but rather as merely a lack of extraversion. The current study aimed to develop and validate a measure on introversion in relation to extraversion, social involvement, social anxiety, and academic achievement. Belmont University Introductory Psychology students were asked to complete questionnaires on Qualtrics that measured demographics, introversion, extraversion, social …

Psychology: Religious Conflicts Amongst A Christian Campus, Cole Peterson, Alyssa Shearing, Sydney Willis, Melody Alvarez Nov 2023

Psychology: Religious Conflicts Amongst A Christian Campus, Cole Peterson, Alyssa Shearing, Sydney Willis, Melody Alvarez

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

The current study seeks to develop and validate a quantitative measure of religion on a Christian campus. As the influence of religion in multiple aspects of the world continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly important to gain an understanding of the experiences of college students within a Christian campus. It has been found that “exposure to new ideas that college provides were thought to lead students to question and ultimately abandon their traditional religious beliefs” (Maryl & Oeur, 2009). More research regarding the effect of religion specifically on a Christian campus is needed; therefore, a reliable and valid psychometric scale …

Presence, Prowess, Power: Theorizing Trust In Local Political Life, Enrique Niño P. Leviste Nov 2023

Presence, Prowess, Power: Theorizing Trust In Local Political Life, Enrique Niño P. Leviste

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Western theorizations have predominantly privileged a rationalist and institution-centric approach to analyzing trust, framing it as a function of formal rules, governance structures, and strategic calculation. Many contemporary Global South studies have deepened discussions on the dynamics of trust across different contexts. However, they have often adopted frameworks similar to those in Western scholarship, overlooking locally embedded, relational, and context-specific understandings of trust. In lieu of and in response to these perspectives, this paper proposes an alternative sociological theorization grounded on a nuanced understanding of local political dynamics that tend to be more informal, personal, and relational. Building on established …

How Are We Supposed To Respond To This?: Me Too As A Social Transformation Movement, Julia Dolfo De Castro Nov 2023

How Are We Supposed To Respond To This?: Me Too As A Social Transformation Movement, Julia Dolfo De Castro

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

This paper attempts to demonstrate how the Me Too movement is crucial in social transformation precisely because it demands a rethinking of current normativities, such as those surrounding gender and sexual norms, power relations, and culture. Through Nikolas Kompridis’s “reflective disclosure,” this paper argues that the Me Too movement as a critique employs a stance of receptivity to reinvigorate its critical perspectives and fuel its political commitments to freedom and transformation. This paper aims to accomplish two things: (1) to tackle the “burden” of hearers/listeners of “me too” to respond; (2) to introduce the possibilities of receptivity in social transformation …

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: The book presents an attempt to revisit and recontextualize approaches to contemporary Philippine Studies. It seeks to locate the field of study locally and globally, noting that there are different ways of interrogating and therefore, extending the discussions to cover the Philippines’s place in the global community. There is a growing global scholarship on Philippine Studies, making it possible to have a continuity of discussion from the past that is not limited to an essentialist approach but one that is cognizant of the plurality entailed by the global nature of contemporary discourse. Caroline Hau writes in the foreword that …

Promoting Patient Mobility To Decrease Hospital Length Of Stay, Saira Kinuthia Nov 2023

Promoting Patient Mobility To Decrease Hospital Length Of Stay, Saira Kinuthia

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Promoting patient mobility may reduce hospital-acquired complications and length of stay (LOS). Evidence-based studies have established that there is a correlation between immobility and an increased length of stay in the hospital. How can nurse-driven mobility interventions effectively increase patient mobility and reduce the risk of complications and length of hospital stay?

PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: For veteran patients in the Progressive Care unit (PCU) of a medical center (P), will using the Johns Hopkins Highest Level of Mobility tool (JH-HLM) (I) compared to not using a mobility tool (C) decrease hospital length …

Psychology: Examining The Relationship Between Tuition Payment And Academic Performance Through Gpa., Alec Khatter, Kailey Ryan, Jen Zou, Caity Koch

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlation between whether paying for college tuition can affect individual's grade point average (GPA). In previous studies, research has shown that individuals tend to perform better academically when receiving financial help vs. Individuals funded by their parents (Faulk et al., 2012). Following previous studies, most of the studies found do not focus specifically on the correlation between financial dependency when paying for college and GPA. Our study strictly focuses on the relationship between those students who do not pay for college and those who do pay for college and how …

Probiotic Intervention Does Not Affect Recovery Of Hippocampal Memory Following Disruption From High-Fat Diets In Adult Female Rats, Trisha Patel, Cameron Smith Nov 2023

Probiotic Intervention Does Not Affect Recovery Of Hippocampal Memory Following Disruption From High-Fat Diets In Adult Female Rats, Trisha Patel, Cameron Smith

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

High-fat diets are prevalent in the United States and other countries, contributing to potential health concerns. Previous research has shown that foods with high-fat levels can lead to deficits in spatial memory and alter the hippocampus, a brain area important for spatial learning and memory. Research has also shown that memory deficits can be improved and sometimes restored by increasing the levels of probiotic intake while consuming a high-fat diet. In a previous experiment, adult female rats were fed a high-fat diet and showed spatial memory impairments. The rats were then reverted back to a control, low-fat diet and split …

Relationships Between Intimate Partner Violence And Alaskan Women's Health, Ingrid Johnson, Andrew Gonzalez Nov 2023

Relationships Between Intimate Partner Violence And Alaskan Women's Health, Ingrid Johnson, Andrew Gonzalez

Alaska Victimization Survey (AVS) (2010-2020)

This report details a sample of Alaskan women's experiences with psychological, physical, and sexual harm by an intimate partner, and the relationships between those experiences and their current physical and mental health. These analyses of Alaska Victimization Survey (AVS) data are comprised of almost 13,000 survey responses from adult, non-institutionalized Alaskan women. The findings confirm those of prior, non-Alaska based research that all types of historical and recent intimate partner violence (IPV) are linked to victims’ current physical and mental health. Non-physical IPV has the same negative relationships with various health status indicators as physical IPV: Control, threats, and psychological …

Criminal Minds:The Modern Practices Of Profiling, Topacio A. Sanchez Nov 2023

Criminal Minds:The Modern Practices Of Profiling, Topacio A. Sanchez

Whittier Scholars Program

The community is so fascinated about hearing stories about true crime and how they commit the crime. People that handle these cases have some type of knowledge of criminal justice and know what they look for. What helps get to the end of a case is criminal profiling; it puts an image of who might have committed the crimes. The information that is used for criminal profiling is collected at the scene or the victims depending on what the crime is. Even after they collect information about who might have committed the crimes, the profile created for the criminal is …

Cross-Cultural Validation Of A Measure Of Contemplativity With A Chinese College Sample, Maryann Krikorian, Ran Tao, Randy T. Busse Nov 2023

Cross-Cultural Validation Of A Measure Of Contemplativity With A Chinese College Sample, Maryann Krikorian, Ran Tao, Randy T. Busse

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The purpose of this article is to present the results of an exploratory cross-cultural validation study of a measure of contemplativity with a Chinese sample. The Scale of Contemplative Practices in Education (SCOPE) was administered to 144 Chinese college students. The results of an exploratory factor analysis accounted for 68% of the variance with a five factor structure, although high correlations among the factors indicate that a single factor may be the best current quantitative measure of contemplativity. Internal consistency estimates were strong for the full scale (.95) and adequate for the factors (.66 to .90). Higher scores on the …

Staff and Researcher Publications

Spatial transcriptomic technologies, such as the Visium platform, measure gene expression in different regions of tissues. Here, we describe new software, STmut, to visualize somatic point mutations, allelic imbalance, and copy number alterations in Visium data. STmut is tested on fresh-frozen Visium data, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) Visium data, and tumors with and without matching DNA sequencing data. Copy number is inferred on all conditions, but the chemistry of the FFPE platform does not permit analyses of single nucleotide variants. Taken together, we propose solutions to add the genetic dimension to spatial transcriptomic data and describe the limitations of different datatypes.

How Demographics Influence Self-Image, Stephanie Yu, Amy Whitmarsh, Leyla Rakshani, Aaron Schurger Nov 2023

How Demographics Influence Self-Image, Stephanie Yu, Amy Whitmarsh, Leyla Rakshani, Aaron Schurger

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

When creating psychological research surveys, demographics are typically recorded at the end of the primary survey. Psychologists suggest placing demographic questions at the end to omit any biases from the participants (Hughes et al., 2016). Does the placement of these types of questions influence people without them knowing? How does this apply across different ethnic groups? Can demographic question placement prime individuals in their self-rating of attractiveness and the overall impact of demographic placement on survey results? After an initial round, we wanted to see if ethnic groups would be primed differently when viewing people of the same race. We …

Assessment Of Ethanol And Nicotine Interactions Using A Reinforcer Demand Modeling With Grouped And Individual Levels Of Analyses In A Long-Access Self-Administration Model Using Male Rats, Christopher L. Robison, Nicole Cova, Victoria Madore, Tyler Allen, Scott T. Barrett, Sergios Charntikov

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous reports have indicated the reciprocal effects of nicotine and ethanol on their rewarding and reinforcing properties, but studies using methodological approaches resembling substance use in vulnerable populations are lacking. In our study, rats first self-administered ethanol, and their sensitivity to ethanol’s reinforcing effects was assessed using a reinforcer demand modeling approach. Subsequently, rats were equipped with intravenous catheters to self-administer nicotine, and their sensitivity to nicotine’s reinforcing effects was evaluated using the same approach. In the final phase, rats were allowed to self-administer ethanol and nicotine concurrently, investigating the influence of one substance on the rate of responding for …
