The 5r Model Of Language Learner Autonomy: Reconstructing Autonomous Language Learners In Distance Education, Roseniya G. Tamano Dec 2023

The 5r Model Of Language Learner Autonomy: Reconstructing Autonomous Language Learners In Distance Education, Roseniya G. Tamano

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Although the concept of language learner autonomy (LLA) has traditionally revolved around learners’ capacity to assume control over their own learning, the circumstances brought about by the pandemic prompt us to delve deeper into this capability. What is the nature of LLA, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic? This study uses a Philippine case to redefine and operationalize LLA by comprehensively describing this phenomenon. It focuses on the themes revealed in the lived experiences of the learners and proposes a model of LLA based on these findings. Exactly 41 Grade 10 ESL learners from a science high school served as participants …

The Development And Validation Of An Efl Learner Attitude Scale For Phonetic Symbol Learning In A Chinese University Context, Jie Zeng, Yi Qin, Yu Zong, Tengfei Zhao, Xiping Wang Dec 2023

The Development And Validation Of An Efl Learner Attitude Scale For Phonetic Symbol Learning In A Chinese University Context, Jie Zeng, Yi Qin, Yu Zong, Tengfei Zhao, Xiping Wang

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Research has established that learner attitude significantly impacts the outcomes of learning English as a foreign language (EFL). However, previous studies have rarely considered a validated attitude scale for English phonetic symbol learning (EPSL). This study aims to develop and validate a scale to measure students' attitudes toward EPSL by integrating findings from learning attitude research in education and psychology. The results demonstrate that the attitude scale can predict attitudes towards EPSL in the context of a Chinese university and has good reliability and validity (KMO=0.892, α=0.749). Pedagogical suggestions are made to help students develop a more positive attitude toward …

Investigating College Students’ Second Language And Computer-Mediated Communication Anxieties In A Philippine Comprehensive University, Marikah Devon Forro, Rachelle Ballesteros-Lintao

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

The issue of classroom language anxiety, considered a significant factor that hinders language learning, has received an increasing amount of research in the field of language education. In the Philippines, despite the abundance of literature regarding students’ language anxiety, the shift in the learning environment due to the pandemic may have significantly affected the language anxiety experienced by learners. Hence, this study sought to investigate students’ language and computermediated communication (CMC) anxieties as they communicate through technology during online classes. Subsequently, it was aimed at identifying the relationship between language anxiety and CMC anxiety. Employing Krashen’s (1982) theory of affective …

Language As The Catalyst Between The Relationship Of Subordinates' Communicative Competence And Supervisors' Communicative Behavior: A Canonical Correlation Analysis, Lindsey N. Tan Dec 2023

Language As The Catalyst Between The Relationship Of Subordinates' Communicative Competence And Supervisors' Communicative Behavior: A Canonical Correlation Analysis, Lindsey N. Tan

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Communicative competence could be understood as the ability to effectively use language in different contexts, and one of these contexts is the intricate framework of the supervisor-subordinate relationship (SSR). However, studies on SSR are mostly based on supervisors’ communicative behavior (SCB), and there is a scarcity of studies that investigate the role of subordinates’ organizational communication competence (SOCC) on SSR. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the relationship between SOCC and SCB in the SSR framework. Using the canonical correlation analysis, two sets of facets were used to analyze the relationship. The first set is the SOCC, which includes communicative …

Science Storytelling Beyond The Dramatic Arc: Narrativity And Little Red Schoolhouse Principles In Science Communication, Daniel A. Newman Dec 2023

Science Storytelling Beyond The Dramatic Arc: Narrativity And Little Red Schoolhouse Principles In Science Communication, Daniel A. Newman

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Narrative is widely recommended for improving science communication, yet the main approach to science storytelling is limited and limiting, advocating fixed dramatic arcs and the ideal of narrativehood, the absolute quality of being a coherent narrative. Neglected by this approach, I argue, are the finer grained linguistic patterns that give texts local narrativity, the quality of being narrative in a scalar, adjectival sense. I harmonize narrativity with the well-established principles of clear technical writing developed by Joseph Williams, then demonstrate how these principles might be used and taught through a comparative reading of several texts discussing a single topic in …

Embedding The Scientists: Civic Issues As Context For Teaching And Learning, Heather Lettner-Rust, Alix Dowling Kink, Edward Kinman, Joellen Pederson, Phillip Poplin Dec 2023

Embedding The Scientists: Civic Issues As Context For Teaching And Learning, Heather Lettner-Rust, Alix Dowling Kink, Edward Kinman, Joellen Pederson, Phillip Poplin

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

We teach science as a path to meaningful civic engagement in a participatory democracy and as a path that should be open to all; our concern lies in how the next generation of young citizens1 address challenging civic issues both by applying science to other contexts—public and civic—as well as communicating science to others—peers and the public. To that end, our article seeks to explain an interdisciplinary capstone course for our general education program that we developed to promote and support science learning and science communication by teaching in the context of important civic issues.

Getting Beyond “Craap”: Scientific Literacy In Fyw And Wad, Erica Duran, Lauren M. Springer Dec 2023

Getting Beyond “Craap”: Scientific Literacy In Fyw And Wad, Erica Duran, Lauren M. Springer

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

While first-year writing (FYW) programs often bear the responsibility for teaching students to write across the disciplines (Downs and Wardle), too often students restrict the concepts learned in FYW to the humanities, or even worse, a single class. Moreover, students frequently complete research assignments in FYW which restrict them to scholarly or peer-reviewed sources, hindering their ability to learn how to assess popular sources. This can be especially problematic with scholarly STEM sources, which are laden with unfamiliar technical terms. Although the writing and research skills learned in FYW are often intended to be interdisciplinary, FYW faculty have opportunities to …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This ethnographic study seeks to analyze teachable and learnable moments in a study abroad program in the south of France. Students in the program had different levels of language competency upon arrival, teachers had different pedagogical styles and philosophies of language education, students resided in various contexts, and students had different levels of engagement with the target community. Through analysis of the observational data and existing research on study abroad, teachable and learnable moments were identified and analyzed for effectiveness in the study abroad context. Missed opportunities for learning were also identified and compared to teachable/learnable moments in order to …

Mapping The Dynamic Literacy Practices Of College Bilingual Students, Timothy Michael Foran Dec 2023

Mapping The Dynamic Literacy Practices Of College Bilingual Students, Timothy Michael Foran

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this study, I investigated how bilingual college students engaged in literacy, language, and spatial practices while working on in-school writing assignments across time and space. To do so, I conducted a semester-long collective case study (Stake, 1995) that incorporated the principles of a multi-sited ethnography (Marcus, 1995). During this study, I collected the following data on four participants: participant observations, field notes, participant writing logs, interviews, artifacts, and a researcher journal. As I collected data, I used Lefebvre’s (1991) spatial triad as a lens to understand how the participants socially constructed space as they participated in their spatial routines …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Transition From Topic-Prominence To Subject-Prominence In Chinese Learners’ Acquisition Of English As A Foreign Language, Limei Zhang Dec 2023

The Transition From Topic-Prominence To Subject-Prominence In Chinese Learners’ Acquisition Of English As A Foreign Language, Limei Zhang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

ABSTRACT The present study investigates the transition from topic-prominence (TP) to subject-prominence (SP) in Chinese EFL learners’ acquisition of English syntactic structures. Chinese and English are categorized as typologically different languages, Chinese being a topic-prominent language and English being a subject-prominent language. Previous research suggests that Chinese EFL learners’ English syntactic production is characterized with Chinese TP features, which constitute a major source of production errors, and that these features tend to decrease while the English SP features increase as learners’ proficiency levels go up. However, the questions of how these TP features develop in the acquisition process and what …

Camouflaging And Identity Development Among Autistic Female And Gender Diverse Youth: A Qualitative Exploration, Krista Nicole Drapalik

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Adolescence is a vulnerable developmental period for autistic female and gender diverse youth. Many autistic youths use camouflaging to combat social challenges, perceived differences, and stigmatization. Although adolescence is an integral time for identity development, integration of these topics remains understudied among autistic female and gender diverse youth. The present study seeks to qualitatively explore first-person, youth-perspectives on the topics of camouflaging and identity formation. Ten autistic female and gender diverse youth aged 11 to 16 years (M = 13.1, SD = 1.52) and their caregivers were enrolled in the present study. Youths completed semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. …

The Dictator Novel In Ya Latinx Fantasy, Catherine Gallegos Dec 2023

The Dictator Novel In Ya Latinx Fantasy, Catherine Gallegos

English (MA) Theses

The Dictator Novel in YA Latinx Fantasy explores the power of the dictator novel in Latinx literature, specifically within the young adult fantasy genre. Drawing upon the work of Jennifer Harford-Vargas to examine the relationship between the forms of power and the power of the narrative form and how this creates ways to defy and rebel against repressive authoritarian figures. The young adult Latinx fantasy novel calls for a challenge to the authoritarian presence that occupies these imagined worlds that reach beyond the cycle of oppression and injustices that have silenced generation after generation. These YA Latinx fantasy novels use …

Mrs. Dalloway As A Window For Understanding Life, Kristen Venegas Dec 2023

Mrs. Dalloway As A Window For Understanding Life, Kristen Venegas

English (MA) Theses

Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway may be dismissed as fiction, and fiction consequently is dismissed as fantasy. However, the novel enables readers to practice an intellectual exercise of meta-awareness that extends beyond the pages and onto real world phenomena. Under a cognitive neuroscience perspective, Mrs. Dalloway is a literary masterpiece due to its hyper- realistic execution of the intimacies of life. Through the narrative style of free-indirect discourse, Woolf illustrates what occurs in the minds of characters as they develop their own perceptions of reality and identity, exposes the fear and inadequacies of mankind’s distress in times of chaos and disorder …

Unleashing The Guarantee Clause Against The Spirit Of Innovation, Ricardo N. Cordova Dec 2023

Unleashing The Guarantee Clause Against The Spirit Of Innovation, Ricardo N. Cordova

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

[...] Of special significance is Madison’s defense of the Guarantee Clause in Federalist 43, in which he argued that the Clause is intended to prevent “aristocratic or monarchical innovations” by the states. This phrase is a critical clue to uncovering the full meaning of the Guarantee Clause. Yet scholars have mentioned it only in passing and divorced from its historical context, as part of apocryphal claims that the Clause supports radical modern causes. This is unfortunate because Madison’s phrase, properly construed, speaks volumes.

Preliminarily, the phrase shows that the Guarantee Clause was originally understood to prevent changes of a …

Aesthetics Of Religious Coexistence And Tolerance In Shafak's Turkish Novel, Mohamad Abou Adel Dec 2023

Aesthetics Of Religious Coexistence And Tolerance In Shafak's Turkish Novel, Mohamad Abou Adel

CoHSS Faculty Work

This paper explores the novel "Forty Rules of Love" by Elif Shafak, which evokes the historical personality of the great scholar Jalal al-Din al-Rumi, dubbed by the West "the Shakespeare of the Islamic world". He was known for his moderation and tolerance, his call to coexistence and fraternity between the members of different religions, and his condemnation of violence and extremism of all kinds. The novel strives to change the misconceptions of the West regarding the Asian countries of the East and to challenge the negative attitude towards Islam, known nowadays as Islamophobia. The paper aims to address the evil …

Respectful Research: Working With Indigenous Peoples In Psychological, Anthropological And Cross-Cultural Sciences, Gesa Solveig Duden, Daniel Bagheri Sarvestani

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Indigenous peoples today face a wide range of constantly evolving political, epistemic and socio-cultural forms of contemporary colonial violence. Modern discourses and research practices both continue to promote Eurocentric narratives while marginalizing non-Western Indigenous perspectives. In our research project focusing on Maya Ch’orti cultural identities in the context of Indigenous peoples’ rights movements, we aimed to follow Indigenous Rights guidelines on how to conduct respectful, collaborative research with instead of on or about Indigenous peoples, thereby exploring forms of subjective epistemologies. In the present article, we provide a description of our endeavour and practices as well as of the challenges …

Digital Archives: How Western Newspapers Frame Our Remembrance Of The Gezi Park Protest, Nihar Sreepada, Ahmet Aksoy Dec 2023

Digital Archives: How Western Newspapers Frame Our Remembrance Of The Gezi Park Protest, Nihar Sreepada, Ahmet Aksoy

Faculty Publications

We analyze the coverage of the Gezi Park protests by two major Western newspapers - The New York Times and The Guardian - through the lens of media framing, rhetoric, and collective memory. We argue that these digital archives frame Turkey's Gezi Park protests as a challenge to an authoritarian government by promoting the themes of unrest as a conflict of ideologies, oppression of citizens, and the park as a site of memory. In a concluding section, we focus on the significance of digital archives as repositories of collective memory and the role of media framing in shaping these reconstructions …

The "Messy Middle": A Framework For Analyzing Raciolinguistic Inequity, Casey Erin Anthony Dec 2023

The "Messy Middle": A Framework For Analyzing Raciolinguistic Inequity, Casey Erin Anthony

Graduate Masters Theses

Existing research has demonstrated that bilingual education in the United States is highly inequitable, providing greater benefits to white English speakers than to students from minoritized backgrounds (e.g., Babino & Stewart, 2017; Palmer, 2009). Additional research has suggested that bilingual spaces also uphold whiteness and English hegemony outside of classrooms, in spaces like parent groups to administrative decisions (e.g., Gallo, 2017; Jacobsen et al., 2019). This ethnographic case study of a Spanish-English Two-Way Dual Language (TWDL) elementary school examines raciolinguistic positioning and interactions among students, teachers, and parents. Drawing on dysconscious racism (King, 1991), LangCrit (Crump, 2014), and critical consciousness …

How Prefixation, Onset Length, And Coda Length Determine Lexical Stress Assignment When Reading Aloud, Kayla Hensley Dec 2023

How Prefixation, Onset Length, And Coda Length Determine Lexical Stress Assignment When Reading Aloud, Kayla Hensley

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Lexical stress, or which syllable is emphasized in a multisyllabic word, can provide important cues for speech segmentation, lexical class, and reading acquisition. Despite this, much of the literature on reading has focused on single syllable words, neglecting the role that stress can play. In this project, I examine the role of prefixation, onset and coda length in assigning stress in disyllabic words when reading aloud. Study 1 is a corpus analysis of English words with grade level information to replicate the model developed by Treiman et al. 2020 and check for age differences. There were no significant differences on …

Principles Of Georgia Constitutional Interpretation, Nels S.D. Peterson Dec 2023

Principles Of Georgia Constitutional Interpretation, Nels S.D. Peterson

Mercer Law Review

The Supreme Court of Georgia routinely emphasizes the importance of interpreting the Georgia Constitution on its own terms, and not merely importing federal interpretations of the federal Constitution. That makes sense, “[r]eal federalism means that state constitutions are not mere shadows cast by their federal counterparts, always subject to change at the hand of a federal court’s new interpretation of the federal Constitution." But independent interpretation of the Georgia Constitution is often easier to talk about than to do.

Estimating Propensity For Causality-Based Recommendation Without Exposure Data, Zhongzhou Liu, Yuan Fang, Min Wu Dec 2023

Estimating Propensity For Causality-Based Recommendation Without Exposure Data, Zhongzhou Liu, Yuan Fang, Min Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Causality-based recommendation systems focus on the causal effects of user-item interactions resulting from item exposure (i.e., which items are recommended or exposed to the user), as opposed to conventional correlation-based recommendation. They are gaining popularity due to their multi-sided benefits to users, sellers and platforms alike. However, existing causality-based recommendation methods require additional input in the form of exposure data and/or propensity scores (i.e., the probability of exposure) for training. Such data, crucial for modeling causality in recommendation, are often not available in real-world situations due to technical or privacy constraints. In this paper, we bridge the gap by proposing …

Role Of Teachers In Empowering Migrant Students In Their Education, Maricruz Fragosa Dec 2023

Role Of Teachers In Empowering Migrant Students In Their Education, Maricruz Fragosa

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many migrant families working in the Monterey Bay areas have to move from one place to another, so their children are considered to be migrant students. The majority of these families migrate to California so their children can continue their education with the support of their teachers. There are existing programs at the national, local and university level to support migrant students. These programs provide the migrant students with the resources needed to succeed in their education. They provide tutors for migrant students in their classroom as well as one-on-one service to them throughout the school year. This senior capstone …

Informing Adolescents From Latino Immigrant Families About The Effects Of Their Family Responsibilities, Roxanna Emigdio Hernandez Dec 2023

Informing Adolescents From Latino Immigrant Families About The Effects Of Their Family Responsibilities, Roxanna Emigdio Hernandez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This capstone project focuses on the different types of responsibilities that Latino immigrant families give to their adolescents and the effects it may have on them. Children play an active role in many immigrant families because of cultural traditions and immigration challenges (Fuligni & Telzer, 2012). Adolescents of immigrant parents are often involved in responsibilities such as caring for their younger siblings and cousins, cleaning, cooking, and translating for family members. Adolescents are given these duties because their parents often work multiple jobs and long hours to provide for their families. It is also important to note how difficult a …

Virtue-Driven Leadership: Powering Excellence In Organizations, Joseph Scherrer

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I seek to answer the question “What makes a good leader?” I approach this question systematically, starting in Chapter 1 by asking “What is Leadership?” In attempting to formulate a response, I find that the concept is slipperier than it first appears and difficult to pin down. All the same, I construct a thematic, contextually pertinent definition that provides reasonable precision for the purposes of this study. In Chapter 2, I present a representative survey of the social-scientific academic literature in order to establish the prospect that a philosophy of virtuous leadership can be empirically validated in …
