Measuring Media-Related Health And Mental Health Information Acquisition Among Latino Adults In The United States, Melissa J. Dupont-Reyes, Alice P. Villatoro, Giovanni Gama, Lu Tang
Public Health
Objectives
We developed and evaluated new media-related health information acquisition measures for U.S.-based Latino populations.
Methods
In 2021, a sample of U.S.-based Latino adults (N = 1574) self-completed a 20-min survey of health information acquisition measures across three language/cultural dimensions: Spanish media, Latino-tailored media in English, and general media in English. Socio-demographics were also ascertained. Means and standard deviations for the health acquisition measures were adjusted for age and sex and reported across nativity status.
Results
The sample was diverse across age, gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, migration, and language competency. Internal consistency reliability of developed scales was excellent overall …
Virginia Woolf's Response To The Female Artist Confronting The Patriarchy, Kristin M. Callender
Virginia Woolf's Response To The Female Artist Confronting The Patriarchy, Kristin M. Callender
ETD Archive
With her body of work, Virginia Woolf joins a host of female novelists decrying the lack of power that women in general wield in a patriarchal society. Specifically, her novels To the Lighthouse and Orlando provide a hopeful response to the dismal depiction of the female artist in Victorian literature, namely Anne Brontë’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Because of its subject matter of domestic abuse, unfortunately the experience of too many women in a society in which husbands are given too much power, Tenant was not regarded with respect in Brontë's lifetime. The novel so obviously portrays a woman …
Midstream Contract Interpretation, Alan Schwartz, Simone M. Sepe
Midstream Contract Interpretation, Alan Schwartz, Simone M. Sepe
Notre Dame Law Review
This Article makes two original contributions to the contract interpretation and renegotiation literatures. First, we introduce an underexplored cause of renegotiation failure: party uncertainty regarding the type of court that will interpret their contract. Parties may predict differently how the applicable court will weigh facts, apply legal rules, or interpret contracts. When parties disagree regarding the court’s interpretive practices, they will assess their expected litigation payoffs differently. This could cause parties to litigate transactions rather than complete them, even when the parties agree on the economic parameters. Litigators know that differing predictions about what a court will do can impede …
The Evolution Of The Role Of Speech-Language Pathologists In The Nicu: Are Educational Programs Supporting The Change?, Melanie Spinnie
The Evolution Of The Role Of Speech-Language Pathologists In The Nicu: Are Educational Programs Supporting The Change?, Melanie Spinnie
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to determine the progressive roles of speech-language pathologists (SLP) in performing feeding and swallowing interventions in preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and evaluate the education SLPs receive regarding this topic, as well as how this can affect their work in the NICU and what changes in curriculum and experience should be made for SLPs to best serve this fragile population. SLPs have not always been the primary providers in this field, so it is crucial to understand these established roles and how they have changed and will continue to change. …

Development Of Back-Scatter And Pile-Up Identification For Ucna+, Amelia Greathouse
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The UCNA Experiment at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) uses
an electron spectrometer to observe angular correlations between the neutron spin and the momenta of beta particles emitted during the process of beta (β) decay. Combined with neutron lifetime measurements, these observations probe physics beyond the standard model. In recent years there has been an effort to modernize the equipment to reduce the physical limitations of the experiment. The new prototype helps to reduce error via use of silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs) and the SiPMs also have a greater quantum efficiency than the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). However, there is …

This study takes place at a middle school in Charleston County, South Carolina. The study examines how White women educators make sense of being exposed to the content in Don’t Let Them Be Misunderstood, a professional development about Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (CRCM). Guided by sensemaking theory and the dispositions of culturally responsive pedagogy, this exploratory study documents White women teachers’ responses to Don’t Let Them Be Misunderstood using multiple sources of data including semi-structured interviews, transcripts from the session, and transcripts from a post-exposure focus group. These data illustrate teacher’s sense-making around and includes thoughts around how to improve …
“I Hope You Are Not Being Stupid About Children”: Transforming Literature Pedagogy Through Children’S Literature, Ashley Cheyenne Johnson
“I Hope You Are Not Being Stupid About Children”: Transforming Literature Pedagogy Through Children’S Literature, Ashley Cheyenne Johnson
English Dissertations - Archive
In this dissertation, I assert that children’s literature is particularly productive for making the literature classroom a more engaging space for students in any genre or historical period of literature taught because it 1) fosters equity; 2) creates confidence; 3) garners student engagement; 4) is valuable; and 5) is an effective, productive, and accessible conduit for studies of literary theory. This dissertation argues for a paired-texts methodology, and incorporates pedagogy theory and scholarship, as well as cultural studies and literary analysis to explore the productive intersections of themes, topics, and modes of writing found in children’s literature that align with …

I Pledge Allegiance: Language, Information, And How The American Far-Right Forms Its Identity, Joshua Marvine
Political Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study examines how the modern “alt-right” converged with mainstream Conservative politics following the election of Donald Trump. It explores how in the 21st Century, as in the past, right-wing social movements use language to prompt violence from their adherents. While far-right information networks have existed for decades, this study explores the ways in which modern networks allow for a greater convergence between disparate movements on the right, creating a more unified information web and understanding of reality. This convergence contributes to extremist ideas gaining larger and more mainstream platforms, granting them a global reach and significant influence in domestic …
Why Are We Creatives? Understanding The Psychology Of Creativity Between Children And Adults With References To Leonardo Da Vinci And Michelangelo Buonarroti, Jordyn R. Garca
2023 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This paper examines the differences in creativity between children and adults, including certain components that can influence creativity, or in certain instances, can also diminish it. With the support of biographers, clinical psychologists, and scholars, this paper also includes information regarding the lives of two of the world’s most well-known artists, and in certain instances the challenges they faced regarding childhood and mental health. Growing up, it is often encouraged that children should develop their creativity and learn to make their own decisions without fear of failure. However, it is not commonly accepted in society for an individual to want …
Adaptive Instruction Through Reflection: How Preservice Teachers Create And Implement Individualized Literacy Lessons In A University Reading Center, Jennifer Marie Lennon
Adaptive Instruction Through Reflection: How Preservice Teachers Create And Implement Individualized Literacy Lessons In A University Reading Center, Jennifer Marie Lennon
Dissertations
Modern classrooms are increasingly diverse. Students vary in their academic abilities, personal interests, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and previous experiences (Allen et al., 2013). To meet the varied needs of students, educators must adapt their instruction so all are able to find success. Modifying lesson plans and changing instruction based on student needs are forms of adaptive instruction (Hoffman & Duffy, 2016; Vaughn, 2019). This study explored the metacognitive processes of preservice teachers (PSTs) as they implemented adaptive instruction within their literacy lessons in a university reading center tutoring program. Adaptive instruction was examined through two lenses: first, as PSTs …

“I Became Myself”: Exploring Cultural Learning Through Stories And Storytelling., Leah Halliday-Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite broad acknowledgement in education that culturally responsive teaching is essential to meeting learners’ needs, defining and operationalizing culturally responsive teaching remains a challenge. Along with being designed to meet the needs of students from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds who have traditionally been underserved, one commonly identified feature of culturally responsive teaching is building on students’ cultural assets to promote their learning. And while stories and storytelling are among the most common teaching tools, storytelling pedagogies tend to use stories to deliver content or to assess student learning. This dissertation explores collaborative story sharing as an approach to helping …

The Relationship Between Social Network Typology, L2 Proficiency Growth, And Curriculum Design In University Study Abroad, Tripp Strawbridge
Modern Languages & Literature
This study utilizes social network analysis to characterize a typology of study abroad sojourner experience, detailing the relationship of social experience types to second language (L2) proficiency growth and study abroad program design. In contrast with previous research, the study performs a quantitative analysis of structural and compositional network features to identify a typology of social networks. Participants were 30 L2 Spanish learners from five US-based semester-long university study abroad programs in Spain. Social network data were collected using a social network questionnaire, while L2 development was measured through an elicited imitation task. Results identify four prominent social network patterns, …

Sembrando Semillas, Sowing Seeds: Reflections On Latinx Representations In Us Community Psychology's Ajcp, Jesica S. Fernandez, Ireri Bernal, Bianca L. Guzmán
Ethnic Studies
Latinx have contributed to the foundation and formation of the United States, and as this demographic increases, overlooking their unique experiences and lived conditions can limit community psychology's potential to better support them in their wellbeing. Thus, in alignment with the call for a virtual special issue highlighting critical themes in the American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP), we take an exemplar approach to reviewing 15 articles published between 1979 and 2023. We highlight these articles for their unique contributions in laying the foundation or shifting the discourses of Latinx in the United States. We organize each article under one …

Aksakidion Odontokeras (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae: Eumolpini), A New Genus And Species In An Old Collection From Paraguay, Wills Flowers
Insecta Mundi
Aksakidion odontokeras, new genus and new species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae: Eumolpini), is described from four specimens in the Bowditch Collection at Harvard University. It is distinguished from all other genera in the Eumolpinae by an elongate, seta-bearing, tusk-like projection on the dorsal side of each mandible. Although locality data only mention Paraguay as the country of origin, information about the collector indicates it was collected in the late 19th century in the vicinity of Asunción.
During a recent visit to the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University (MCZ) to study type material of Neotropical Chrysomelidae, a short series …

Psychology In A Podcast Context: Do Brand Personality Perceptions And Social Nudges Explain Consumers’ Behavioral Intentions To Subscribe To Breaking Points?, Stephen D. Berry
Dissertations
Two psychological variables are of interest in the study of consumers: brand personality perceptions (per social cognition, beliefs that brands exhibit human-like attributes) and nudges (per behavioral economics, an attempt to influence behavioral change that benefits the consumer without taking away their right to choose). However, no known research exists about whether these variables explain behavioral intentions to consume podcasts, specifically. This is relevant because perceptions of mass media brands are historically negative, and consumers increasingly seek out independent media (e.g., Breaking Points). Therefore, this dissertation’s purpose was to use Breaking Points as an example to study the influence of …

Health Care Quality And Health Care Access Disparities Among Racial And Ethnic Populations With Comorbid Mental And Physical Health Conditions, Amanda Lee Ryan
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
This study reports the individual and county-level factors associated with racial and ethnic disparities in the ED and inpatient utilization rates and discharge status for adult individuals with chronic mental illness (CMI) and comorbid medical conditions. Social determinants at the individual and county levels associated with rates of higher risk discharge statuses, and the extent to which these account for heterogeneity in acute care utilization and post-acute care plans were also assessed. Despite the significant literature in racial and ethnic disparities, and emergency department and inpatient admission utilization, there remains gaps in the literature regarding individuals with chronic mental illness …

Nebraska is increasingly becoming a linguistically and culturally diverse state. As a designated refugee resettlement state, Nebraska rural and urban communities harbor different world languages. With the current research showing the importance of home languages for educational success and the importance of multilingualism, this study seeks to discuss community language ideologies through data analysis of a sample of community members (N = 1584). The study uses survey methods and quantitative statistical analysis. The findings disclose that a dominant monolingual ideology is rooted among community members. Community members’ language ideologies varied by race and educational background. In addition, community members’ …

Trademarks In An Algorithmic World, Christine Haight Farley
Trademarks In An Algorithmic World, Christine Haight Farley
Washington Law Review
According to the sole normative foundation for trademark protection—“search costs” theory—trademarks transmit useful information to consumers, enabling an efficient marketplace. The marketplace, however, is in the midst of a fundamental change. Increasingly, retail is virtual, marketing is data-driven, and purchasing decisions are automated by AI. Predictive analytics are changing how consumers shop. Search costs theory no longer accurately describes the function of trademarks in this marketplace. Consumers now have numerous digital alternatives to trademarks that more efficiently provide them with increasingly accurate product information. Just as store shelves are disappearing from consumers’ retail experience, so are trademarks disappearing from their …

Promoting Comprehension Strategies Of Primary Grade Students Through Datacasting Materials For Distance Learning, Alen Mateo S. Muñoz, Raymund C. Sison
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
Many online learners, especially in resource-challenged schools, struggled with learning gaps during the pandemic. This study focuses on using cost-effective datacasting learning materials for distance education that promote intermediate grade students’ self-regulation, reading, and writing skills. Datacasting is the process of delivering computer (IP) data over a traditional television broadcast signal. Locally, where only 17.7% of households have Internet access, but 82.7% have television sets (Department of Informations and Communications Technology, 2019), datacasting affords greater learning opportunities than the Internet. Guided by structure, interactivity, and the functional language teaching theory, this study used sequential explanatory design to explore the role …
Implementing Community Health Workers To Improve The Management Of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases In Children, Julia L. Newell
Implementing Community Health Workers To Improve The Management Of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases In Children, Julia L. Newell
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Childhood obesity, asthma, and untreated mental health conditions are three examples of chronic non-communicable diseases (CNDs) that pose a host of negative consequences later in life. Minority children from low-income families, especially those with environmental disadvantages, face additional risk factors for the development of these diseases. Community health workers (CHWs) are in a unique position to help address these negative health externalities by being attuned with the linguistic, cultural, and socioemotional needs of members of their communities. Research has demonstrated success in CHW-led interventions curtailing the negative impacts associated with these diseases in low-income, minority communities.

Who's Afraid Of Being Woke? – Critical Theory As Awakening To Erascism And Other Injustices, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Essay critically analyzes the “anti-woke” message deployed by the Conservative Political Action Conference’s (CPAC) 2023 annual meeting’s poster—the suggestion that awake is good and its synonym woke is bad—with the goal of establishing the importance of CRT in general and in education more specifically. This work shows how critical theories are key to deconstructing disingenuous messaging about the meaning of words, theoretical constructs, and historical realities.
The Work first elucidates that the meaning of awake, as utilized in myriad fields, addresses the concept of consciousness—awareness of injustices in society. Second, the Essay historicizes the origins and uses of the …
