Mucin And Splice Variant Profiles Of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Predict Patient Survival And Subtyping, Christopher M. Thompson May 2021

Mucin And Splice Variant Profiles Of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Predict Patient Survival And Subtyping, Christopher M. Thompson

Theses & Dissertations

PDAC is a pancreatic epithelial malignancy and demonstrates aggressive progression and bleak patient prognosis. Despite decades of research, the evolution of novel diagnostics and intervention modalities for PDAC is stagnant. This dissertation explores the characteristic aberrant and elevated expression of mucins in PDAC. Beginning with the hypothesis that mucins are associated with disease aggressiveness, analysis of PDAC patient survival in TCGA revealed no associations between single mucin expression and patient survival. This led to the underlying issue of PDAC tumor cellularity since this disease demonstrates variability in the proportion of cancer cells within the tumor. Tumor purity assessed with the …

An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Nutrition And Physical Activity Intervention Study On Changes In Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Outcome Expectations Of Fathers, Sarah Hortman

Theses & Dissertations

Overweight and obesity rates are a continuing concern resulting in poor health outcomes and annual healthcare costs in the billions of dollars. An upstream approach of health promotion is critical to change the focus from treatment and management to prevention of chronic disease. Preventing chronic disease through evidence-based health promotion practices incorporating educational interventions aimed at dietary and physical activity behaviors will preclude negative health outcomes including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.

The family environment is an important consideration in the prevention of chronic disease including obesity. Parents are role models for their children, including fathers who are …

Effect Of Aerobic Exercise With Blood Flow Restriction On Substrate Utilization And Energy Expenditure, Nathen Andrews May 2021

Effect Of Aerobic Exercise With Blood Flow Restriction On Substrate Utilization And Energy Expenditure, Nathen Andrews

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of intermittent blood flow restriction (BFR) compared to low- (LIIE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on energy expenditure (EE) and substrate utilization. Participants randomly performed each interval exercise protocol, and then rested for a three-hour period, in which EE and substrate utilization were measured. Total EE was different between BFR (321.6 ± 30.1 kcals), HIIE (254.5 ± 33.5 kcals), and LIIE (287.1 ± 25.5 kcals). Fat oxidation (FatOx) in BFR (1hr = 0.14 ± 0.01 g / min, 3hr = 0.11 ± 0.01 g / min) was greater than LIIE …

Decreased Activity Of Phosphofructokinase-1 In Flight Muscle Cells Of Hawk Moth Manduca Sexta With Age, Owen G. Alvine May 2021

Decreased Activity Of Phosphofructokinase-1 In Flight Muscle Cells Of Hawk Moth Manduca Sexta With Age, Owen G. Alvine

Honors Thesis

The phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1) enzyme is important for the catalyzation and regulation of glycolysis, especially in muscle. Investigating age-related changes in PFK-1 activity will provide insights into the metabolism shifts in muscle cells of our muscle aging model. The hawk moth, Manduca sexta, was chosen as the model organism because of its unique endothermic, synchronous flight muscles that are more analogous to vertebrates than invertebrate species. We hypothesized that PFK-1 activity will increase in muscle cells of aged moths due to dysregulation of the mitochondria. This was predicted to change the method of energy production, by hindering oxidative phosphorylation, making glycolysis …

Culturally Appropriate Health Education: Translation Of A Parturient Pain Relief Options Pamphlet Into French And Spanish, Francis Minor, Austin Cook

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The rise of immigration worldwide introduces a diverse, multicultural population of patients seeking healthcare in the United States. Barriers to communication, both spoken language and culturally associated communication norms, limit immigrant women’s ability to seek, gain access, and follow through with perinatal care. In order to provide safe, effective, and culturally sensitive care, recognition of language and cultural differences of all individuals must be considered when providing patients with educational materials (Perera et al., 2012; Plumbaum et al., 2014). The aim of this project was to translate an existing pain relief options pamphlet into French and Spanish in order to …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

This project evaluated the knowledge of the public, healthcare providers, and nurses regarding opioid induced hyperalgesia (OIH). OIH is an elevated pain response because of high dosage or chronic use of opioids. Opioids are a problem not only in the United States but throughout the world; addiction, constipation, and overdose are the most frequently mentioned consequences of opioids. Little is known about other consequences to the body caused by chronic or high dose opioid usage, such as OIH. This project sought to increase awareness and caution against the utilization of opioids by patients and their healthcare providers and nurses practice. …

Effects Of Oxidative Stress On The Astaxanthin Biosynthesis Pathway Of Haematococcus Pluvialis, Rachel Cray May 2021

Effects Of Oxidative Stress On The Astaxanthin Biosynthesis Pathway Of Haematococcus Pluvialis, Rachel Cray

All Student Scholarship

Astaxanthin is a key carotenoid pigment produced primarily in nature by the unicellular microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. This potent antioxidant is produced in response to environmental stressors, such as high light, upon which reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced. While the presence of ROS has been established in this cascade via carotenogenic genes, its effect has not been defined. The overall goal of this study was to quantify the effect of ROS on the astaxanthin biosynthesis pathway within H. pluvialis. Cellular ROS concentrations and astaxanthin output were quantified in response to environmental variables, redox-sensitive compounds, and ROS-scavengers. All environmental and redox-sensitive …

Evaluation Of Chili Pepper (Capsicum Annuum), Tiger Nuts (Cyperus Esculentus), And Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) As Sources Of Antioxidant Compounds For The Potential Of Antiaging-Like Activity, Chelsea Toyer

Theses

Aging is a natural process that living organisms go through as they become older. In humans and other animals, aging is accompanied by several morphological changes, including the formation of wrinkles. Wrinkles are also caused by various environmental factors such as excessive exposure to sun or pollution, and continuous sleep deprivation. These environmental factors cause oxidation of skin cells and the degradation of subcutaneous fatty acids, leading to the formation of wrinkles. Skin care and wrinkle treatment products are part of a multimillion-dollar industry. Plant-based products are an alternative method for treating wrinkles and premature aging. Several antioxidants naturally found …

[Re]Discovering Nature | Ecotourism & Natural Resource Conservation: The ‘Potential’ For A Sustainable Symbiotic Relationship, Amber Bennett May 2021

[Re]Discovering Nature | Ecotourism & Natural Resource Conservation: The ‘Potential’ For A Sustainable Symbiotic Relationship, Amber Bennett

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Humans are more disconnected than ever from the natural environment. Architecture and ecology, both providing distinct conceptual frameworks for the city, one for nature and one for culture, these thesis explores the frameworks that call for them to be intersected to further an actionable ecology for the city and its architecture. Interaction with the natural environment is crucial to human well-being and development, but sadly this connection has diminished drastically due to the over-reliance on modern-day advances and technology. This severed relationship attributes to the lack of awareness of pressing environmental issues that are threatening our shared communities. Islands, remote …

Rethinking The Needs Of The Invisible Society Through Empowerment, Jada Ross

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis addresses the issue of homelessness and is intended to spark an open conversation about how we can redefine our perceptions of families who experience homelessness. The proposal aims to explore and establish an transitional intervention for “invisible” families to live and develop into contributing residents of society. In the United States, the most vulnerable population are families with children, accounting for 33% of the homeless population. As Covid19 cases continue to rise, and policies continue to neglect affordable housing options, the number of families experiencing homelessness will continue to grow in the future. Through the analysis of case …

Revival Of The Dead Zone- Ecotourism Within The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, Angelina Damaj May 2021

Revival Of The Dead Zone- Ecotourism Within The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, Angelina Damaj

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Since the nuclear accident, Chernobyl has been abandoned for 30 years. 30 kilometers around Chernobyl was evacuated and it has left the area to become a dead zone. In actuality the dead zone is full of life. Plant and animal populations have expanded and thrived, and people have slowly started to reenter the zone. The exclusion zone has become a new ecosystem.

With more people coming into Chernobyl for tourism, there is higher risk of the ecosystem being threatened. My thesis will explore ecotourism within the Chernobyl exclusion zone. My proposal is an urban design that is shaped by ecotourist …

A Quality Improvement Initiative To Decrease Fall Risk In Community Dwelling Elderly, Michele Shearer May 2021

A Quality Improvement Initiative To Decrease Fall Risk In Community Dwelling Elderly, Michele Shearer

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Falls are a health concern for the elderly and are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal fall injuries in this population (Burns & Lee, 2016). Meijers, et al. (2012) found that one in three community dwelling elderly will experience at least one fall per year with an even higher rate in adults greater than 80 years old. Numbers of falls are expected to increase as this population ages. This increase in falls and their consequences will produce an enormous economic burden on the United States health care system (Burns & Lee, 2016). The purpose of this program was to …

Explaining Reproductive Health Disparities: Violence In The “Colorblind” Institution Of Medicine, Chineze Osakwe May 2021

Explaining Reproductive Health Disparities: Violence In The “Colorblind” Institution Of Medicine, Chineze Osakwe

Honors Scholar Theses

Medical policies have resulted in violence that has a formal role in regulating the reproductive rights of women of African descent in the United States from the Jim Crow era (circa 1965) to present day (2021), resulting in significantly racialized reproductive health disparities regardless of social or economic influences. This thesis explores why reproductive violence against African-American women persists, regardless of women’s own class and educational background. I have focused on the potential impact of two structural components that I hypothesized contributed to the perpetuation of reproductive violence against Black women and persistent health disparities. The two factors explored in …

Empowering Mothers: A Conceptual Model For Promoting Perinatal Mental Wellness Among Women In The United States, Kayla Acklin May 2021

Empowering Mothers: A Conceptual Model For Promoting Perinatal Mental Wellness Among Women In The United States, Kayla Acklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Globally, there are certain expectations surrounding becoming a mother related to pregnancy and the birth. For many women, the birth of a child represents a natural event filled with joy. Societally, the expectation is that pregnancy, birth, and the transition into motherhood are normal, positive experiences for all women (Davis-Floyd & Cheyney, 2019). However, research shows that some women develop impairments in physical and mental health functioning and wellbeing as a result of the major physical and psychosocial changes that take place during the transition into motherhood (Austin et al., 2010; Ayers & Pickering, 2001; O’Hara et al., 2014).
