BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive deficits (NCDs) and associated meta-cognition difficulties associated with chronic substance use often delay the learning and change process necessary for addiction recovery and relapse prevention. However, very few cognitive remediation programs have been developed to target NCDs and meta-cognition for substance users. The study described herein aims to investigate the efficacy of a multi-component neurocognitive rehabilitation and awareness program termed "Neurocognitive Empowerment for Addiction Treatment" (NEAT). NEAT is a fully manualized, cartoon-based intervention involving psychoeducation, cognitive practice, and compensatory strategies relevant across 10 major cognitive domains, including aspects of attention, memory, executive functions, and decision-making.

Environmental Determinant Of Rural Households’ Vulnerability To Water Scarcity In Semi-Arid Nigeria.Pdf, Mohammed Baba-Adamu, Ibrahim Ahmed Jajere
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
Though water resource is an important natural endowment for the attainment of improved living conditions and sustainable development, man’s consumptive demand for it continued to fall short of the supplies. This is especially in the rural communities of the semi-arid region of Nigeria, whose most water sources are unimproved and the supplies from which fall below the demand, resulting in water scarcity. The study assessed the environmental perspective of the rural households’ susceptibility to water scarcity in Nigeria. The study employed multistage sampling, the mixed-method approach of data sourcing, and the data were analyzed with the basic descriptive and inferential …

Mabee Waste Solution Final Project Report, Mary Hippensteel, Armando Rodriguez, Matthew Willis
Engineering Senior Design Reports
Food waste is typically sent to landfills, where it decomposes and releases methane into the environment, causing a serious pollution issue. Mabee Dining Hall’s previous solution to this problem, the Earth Tub Composting Tank, became inoperative after 11 years of service. The team was tasked with developing an alternative solution. Based on the constraints imposed by the location and the project sponsor’s stipulations, such as low odor emission and ease of use, the team decided that the solution would consist of an in-vessel composting system. The container, a 6-gallon HDPE tank, is set up in a horizontal configuration suspended by …

Care Of The Healthcare Provider, Kari Hullinger, Emily Moscardelli
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Evidence has shown a strong correlation between a healthy provider and the positive care that the provider can promote to others. Many evidence-based health promotion programs have been implemented throughout many health systems. These programs have shown improvement of the providers’ overall health. And in return, these providers are able to better care for their patients. Detailed reports have shown many health consequences that healthcare providers have acquired due to long hours, intense training, lack of time, lack of sleep, and the concept of always putting their patients first. A health system in Springfield, Illinois was examined to determine if …
Implementing An Evidence-Based Multifactorial, Multidisciplinary Fall Prevention Program In A Nursing And Rehabilitation Center To Reduce Fall Rates Among Patients, Tincy Poovathur
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Falls are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly in the United States. Patients in long-term care facilities are at increased risk for falls, accounting for 20 percent of fatal falls that require hospitalization. The economic and social burden of falls and fall-related injuries is significant. Fall-related injuries and their resulting expenditures are expected to increase substantially with the increasing aging population making this a problem of high priority. The literature recommends and supports incorporating evidence-based fall prevention initiatives into long-term care facility safety programs to address this problem. Based on the literature review and the facility's …

Free Willy: A Breach To Rejuvenate The Southern Resident Killer Whale, Luke Mcdonough
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
State and federal government entities have made great strides in environmental protection since the inception of the Environmental Protection Agency and the enactment of major environmental regulations. However, species worldwide continue to face threats of extinction due to human activity and climate change without prompt, major intervention. In Washington state, the iconic Southern Resident Killer Whale has seen a dramatic decrease in population since the 1960s. Protections directed for their benefit have not provided the expected return as the main challenges Southern Residents face remain largely unresolved. To restore the Southern Residents’ population for future generations, their entire ecosystem must …
“The White Plague Seems To Love The Black Victim:” The Racialization Of Tuberculosis In The Anti-Tuberculosis Campaign And Black Resistance To The “Negro Tuberculosis Problem,” 1870- 1930, Dillon Prus
History Honors Papers
Tuberculosis was one of the deadliest diseases in late nineteenth and early twentieth century America. Those most impacted by the disease were African Americans living in poverty. White public-health authorities interpreted the Black community’s susceptibility to tuberculosis as evidence of their biological inferiority. However, Black physicians, professors, club women, and nurses courageously resisted these racialized notions via academic journals, medical conferences, and periodicals. Black patients being treated in tuberculosis institutions contributed to sanatorium newspapers such as The Thermometer, establishing a voice to express their pain in ways similar to their white counterparts. Remarkably, physicians of color also found ways to …
Effect Of Single Vs Accumulated Bouts Of Exercise On Body Composition, Fitness, And Resting Metabolic Rate, Alexander Alvara
Effect Of Single Vs Accumulated Bouts Of Exercise On Body Composition, Fitness, And Resting Metabolic Rate, Alexander Alvara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Obesity and physical inactivity are two factors that have been shown to be correlated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. As people have increasingly busier schedules, they have less time to commit to exercise. Accumulating exercise in small bouts is a schedule-friendly alternative to longer continuous bouts of exercise and may protect against CVD and diabetes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of accumulated exercise compared to continuous exercise on body composition, fitness, and resting metabolic rate. Nine healthy male (n=4) and female (n = 5) volunteers were randomized into either an accumulated intervention group …

Big Five Personality Traits And Political Orientation: An Inquiry Into Political Beliefs, Ian E. Phillips
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
Personality research centered on the Big Five personality traits has heavily impacted our understanding in regards to what forces orient a person on a political spectrum. Examining how personality differences interact with political orientation, this research seeks to provide information on what makes someone either more or less likely to be liberal or conservative based on their temperament. In this paper, previous personality research is synthesized into one discussion, centered on what the effects of each trait are and how they impact political orientation, the heritability of personality, and what implications there are for such research in the realm of …
Characterizing Rhetoric In Science Communication, Eleanor Sternberg
Characterizing Rhetoric In Science Communication, Eleanor Sternberg
Honors Capstone Projects
The purpose of this capstone is to identify rhetoric in public-facing science communication, and to characterize and connect that rhetoric by its topic within science. Because science communication is a relatively new discipline to academia, there isn't as much published about it as other topics. As matters of public health and scientific advancement begin to concern the everyday consumer more, there is a growing amount of science communication, as well as analysis of that communication. A 2019 paper by Lars König and Regina Jucks examined rhetoric in climate change communication, and found that the more aggressive the rhetoric in those …

Weight And The Therapeutic Relationship: Implications For Counselors, Emily Shank
Weight And The Therapeutic Relationship: Implications For Counselors, Emily Shank
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Central to the healthcare system in the United States is the belief that weight is an accurate measure of health. This belief, which is the foundation of the Weight Centered Health Paradigm (WCHP), is linked to the proliferation of diets, weight cycling, and weight stigma. However, a growing body of research indicates that higher weight is not necessarily linked to negative health outcomes and that the impact of weight cycling and weight stigma pose far greater risks to health. Counselors and other mental health professionals function within the weight-normative healthcare system in the United States and are faced with the …

Phenibut (ß -phenyl-y-aminobutyric acid) is a psychoactive GABA analogue marketed as a nutritional supplement and “nootropic” online. Phenibut consumption poses a high risk of potential abuse. Withdrawal from Phenibut mimics benzodiazepine and alcohol withdrawal. Without proper management, Phenibut withdrawal may be equally as dangerous as benzodiazepine and alcohol withdrawal. Baclofen can be prescribed for outpatient symptomatic relief of Phenibut withdrawal.

Hypothesis: Patients who participate in an specific health habit do so due to a lack of knowledge about the consequences of that choice.
Goal: Correlate patient participation in specific health habits with their knowledge of the consequences of these choices. Understand why patients continue to participate in specific habits and what influences their decision. The end goal of my project is to provide insight to encourage physicians to evaluate patient’s health education and get physicians to try to apply consequences of these habits on the patient’s life to help them understand health outcomes.
Conclusion: This study showed more correlations between …

Nutrition Education Intervention For Children In Low Socioeconomic Neighborhoods, Archana Menon, Kasmier Viciosi, Joshua Nsubuga
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Childhood obesity is a public health epidemic affecting 18.5% of children and adolescents in the United States. Children who are obese are more likely to obese as adults. Obesity leads to a number of comorbidities including chronic conditions like high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, and heart disease. Low socioeconomic status (SES), lack of healthy food access, and urban neighborhoods have been associated with childhood obesity. Additionally, convenience stores and other low-price stores tended to display and promote junk foods by the main entrance, whereas supermarkets and higher-income stores tended to display fruits and vegetables. We want to combat these …
Kantian Approaches To Animals And Obligations, Caroline Kropka
Kantian Approaches To Animals And Obligations, Caroline Kropka
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In recent years, a number of competing theories have arisen regarding the moral significance of animals to Kant’s deontology, which has traditionally been viewed as unsympathetic towards animals. Based on an overview of how Kant himself positions animals in his moral system, primarily in the Doctrine of Virtue and Lectures on Ethics, I argue that his distinguishing of animals from humans on the basis of rationality is supported, but not to the extent that we are prevented from having moral obligations to animals. One popular reading of Kant only allows us to have indirect duties to animals as they lack …
Effect Of High Intensity Interval Training Vs Low Intensity Training On Fat Loss In Patients With Obesity, Jonathan Aaron Deck, Adarsh Gupta
Effect Of High Intensity Interval Training Vs Low Intensity Training On Fat Loss In Patients With Obesity, Jonathan Aaron Deck, Adarsh Gupta
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Nowadays, there are several exercise modalities to lose weight, retain, and or build lean body mass. A widely known training philosophy that has gained increased popularity is high intensity interval training (HIIT). HIIT is based on exercising at submaximal or maximal intensity for a brief period then reducing work to minimal intensity for a longer duration in a series of repeated bouts. The benefit of HIIT is to increase fat loss through the scientific principle of EPOC (excess post exercise oxygen consumption). Low intensity training (LIT) also has its benefits in that it is more sustainable but with the caveat …
