A Creative Response To Food Issues During The Covid-19 Lockdown: Singing Over The Anger, C Pettinger
A Creative Response To Food Issues During The Covid-19 Lockdown: Singing Over The Anger, C Pettinger
School of Health Professions
Introduction. Food is an identifier and maker of class, culture and civilization (Coveney, 2014, p2) and its symbolic potential is powerful, both individually and collectively within society. Yet, because food sits at the intersection of multifarious disciplines, it feeds into a highly complex and often contradictory, nuanced and politically-driven social justice discourse. COVID-19 and the 2020 “lockdown” has ‘shone a light’ on all that is precarious within our food and health systems. The pandemic, which has been termed a ‘crisis on a crisis’, has forced yet more people into food insecurity (Loopstra, 2020) suggesting a further accentuation of social and …

Assembly And Annotation Of The Genome Of An Invasive Bush Honeysuckle, Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera Maackii), Erin R. Kesel
Theses
Invasive species are a global problem that cause significant environmental and economic damage. It has been estimated that the cost of invasive species in the United States is at least 120 billion dollars annually. Lonicera maackii, commonly known as Amur honeysuckle, is an invasive shrub found in New York State. In invaded regions, L. maackii has caused decreased species richness of native plant and animal species. It has also negatively affected the native migratory bird populations that eat the plant’s berries. Currently, there is no available genomic sequence for any Lonicera species. With next generation sequencing, new information can be …

Biology Faculty Research
Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2) often reduces nitrogen (N) content in rice plants and stimulates tillering. However, there is a general consensus that reduced N would constrain rice tillering. To resolve this contradiction, we investigated N distribution and transcriptomic changes in different rice plant organs after subjecting them to eCO2 and different N application rates. Our results showed that eCO2 significantly promoted rice tillers (by 0.6, 1.1, 1.7, and 2.1 tillers/plant at 0, 75, 150, and 225 kg N ha−1 N application rates, respectively) and more tillers were produced under higher N application rates, …

The Importance Of Providing Multimodal Analgesia: A Literature Review Of Nonpharmacologic Pain Treatments, Miriam Swartzentruber
The Importance Of Providing Multimodal Analgesia: A Literature Review Of Nonpharmacologic Pain Treatments, Miriam Swartzentruber
Senior Honors Theses
Pain is a central aspect of the human experience. While painful stimuli can be beneficial in alerting the brain to the fact that there is something wrong, left untreated, pain can cause devastating long-term effects on the individual, both physically and mentally. Pain has traditionally been either undertreated or managed solely using pharmacologic methods, with less thought given to the importance of supplementing therapy with nonpharmacologic interventions. By incorporating nonpharmacologic methods of pain management into nursing care, patients can be provided with holistic treatment that improves patient outcomes, decreases healthcare costs, avoids future complications, and improves overall quality of life.
Detection Of Neonicotinoids In Northern Leopard Frog (Rana Pipiens) Brains, Peyton G. Keller
Detection Of Neonicotinoids In Northern Leopard Frog (Rana Pipiens) Brains, Peyton G. Keller
Honors Thesis
Neonicotinoids are widespread and commonly used to fight agricultural pests. Unfortunately, these neurotoxic insecticides commonly reach nearby wetlands due to tile drainage systems and agricultural runoff. Non-target organisms, such as amphibians, use wetlands as habitat and are likely exposed to elevated neonicotinoid levels. We collected Northern leopard frogs and water samples from control and tile wetlands to compare imidacloprid brain concentrations and subsequent changes in brain morphology. Additionally, a lab-based experiment was conducted to further analyze the ability of imidacloprid and its metabolite, imidacloprid-olefin, to cross the blood-brain barrier. Tile wetlands had higher aquatic imidacloprid concentrations. Subsequently, amphibians collected from …
Catabolism Of Bcaas And Application, Skylar Arellano-Myers
Catabolism Of Bcaas And Application, Skylar Arellano-Myers
Honors Thesis
Over the past 150 years, amino acids have been found and researched in the nutrition biochemistry field. Over these years, three have been identified; leucine, valine and isoleucine; to make up the branch chain amino acids (BCAAs) that play a crucial role on the anaerobic and aerobic energy systems. The metabolism of BCAAs is a highly complicated process that is regulated by the activation of the alpha-keto acids dehydrogenase complex (BCKDH complex) to complete the catabolic reaction. With exercise, it has been found to increase the metabolism of BCAAs by increasing the BCKDH complex, which will decrease the fatigue and …

Between Life And Death: Pregnancy, Abortion, And Childbirth In The Nazi Concentration Camps, Grace Corkran
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Abstract
To date, Holocaust historians have often grappled with documenting life and death in the Nazi concentration camps for pregnant women. As a result of limited source material, historians have struggled to incorporate the narratives of pregnant women into the historiography and tend to group topics surrounding pregnancy into larger works on gender in the Holocaust. This approach has created a gap in the historiography on reproductive health and female bodies in the Holocaust. In this paper, I will examine the narratives of Holocaust survivors, including the testimonies from pregnant women and doctors, as well as the photographs and drawings …

Changes In Fecal Glucocorticoid Levels And Possible Microbiome Profile Changes During Positive Enrichment In A Captive Population Of Tigers (Panthera Tigris), Sylvia R. Ramsey
Undergraduate Theses
Cortisol is a hormone that is released in response to stress. Cortisol can be damaging in high amounts and it is ideal to maintain at a low level. Captive animals can experience high baseline levels of cortisol during their captivity, verses their non-captive counterparts, (Terio, Marker, & Munson, 2004). Enrichment, a stimulus that encourages an animal to perform natural behavior, is offered to captive animals to allow the animal to exhibit natural behaviors and hopefully lower stress levels. This experiment analyzes if exposure to a positive enrichment significantly impacts an animal’s fecal cortisol levels. Fecal cortisol levels are indicative of …
The Effect Of Polyunsaturated And Saturated Fatty Acids On Seizure Presence And Severity In A Cohort Of Subjects In An Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, Jana K. Wells
Theses & Dissertations
Ketogenic diet therapies (KDTs) have been used to treat epilepsy for nearly 100 years. Although effective, restrictive diet patterns and unknown impacts on long-term health outcomes often prevent their use as first-line therapy. To date, a distinct mechanism of action for KDTs has not been determined and evidence suggests fatty acids (FAs) may play a role in eliciting anti-seizure effects. This dissertation aimed to provide insights into the effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and saturated fatty acids (SFAs) on seizure presence and severity through the analysis of dietary intake in a cohort of patients admitted to an epilepsy monitoring …
An Evaluation Of Trial-Based Functional Analyses Of Inappropriate Mealtime Behavior, Ashley Andersen
An Evaluation Of Trial-Based Functional Analyses Of Inappropriate Mealtime Behavior, Ashley Andersen
Theses & Dissertations
Functional analyses allow clinicians to develop treatment targeting the variables maintaining a child’s inappropriate mealtime behavior (Bachmeyer et al., 2019). Extended functional analyses can be inefficient, potentially delaying the onset of treatment. Researchers have suggested a trial-based functional analysis can increase assessment efficiency (Saini, Fisher, et al., 2019). This study compared trial-based functional analyses to extended functional analyses to determine the variables maintaining inappropriate mealtime behavior. We compared the efficiency and acceptability and evaluated treatments informed by the analyses. Exact correspondence between analyses was low (29%); however, most treatments indicated by the trial-based functional analyses (71%) resulted in improvements in …
Indices Of Happiness And Unhappiness During Treatment Of Pediatric Feeding Disorders, Laura Elizabeth Phipps
Indices Of Happiness And Unhappiness During Treatment Of Pediatric Feeding Disorders, Laura Elizabeth Phipps
Theses & Dissertations
To date, there is no research on the measurement or evaluation of indices of happiness and unhappiness for children receiving behavior-analytic treatment for feeding disorders. The purpose of the current study was to measure child indices of happiness and unhappiness before and during extinction-based treatment and to evaluate the effects of noncontingent reinforcement with extinction-based treatment on indices of happiness and unhappiness. Overall, indices of happiness were idiosyncratic, and indices of unhappiness were initially higher during extinction without noncontingent reinforcement compared to with noncontingent reinforcement. Percentage of acceptance increased for all participants during both treatments, and caregiver treatment acceptability was …
Role And Regulation Of Staphylococcal Cell Death, Abdulelah Ahmed Alqarzaee S
Role And Regulation Of Staphylococcal Cell Death, Abdulelah Ahmed Alqarzaee S
Theses & Dissertations
The transition from growth to stationary phase is a natural response of bacteria to starvation and stress. When stress is alleviated and more favorable growth conditions return, bacteria resume proliferation without a significant loss in fitness. Although specific adaptations that enhance persistence and survival of bacteria in stationary phase have been identified, mechanisms that help maintain the competitive fitness potential of non-dividing bacterial populations have remained obscure. This dissertation demonstrates that staphylococci entering stationary phase following growth in excess glucose undergo regulated cell death to maintain the competitive fitness potential of the population. Upon a decrease in extracellular pH, the …
