Drought × Herbivory Induce Leaf Trichomes In Soybean With Differential Impact On Its Major Herbivore Soybean Looper Chrysodeixis Includens, Manish Gautam, Karen Alanis, Rupesh R. Kariyat

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Trichomes have been well studied as a physical defense against stress. With climate change, stressors like drought and/or herbivory can have exacerbated effects on crop morpho-physiology. However, the interactive effects of such stressors on physical defenses like trichomes and their effects on herbivores is poorly understood. To examine this, soybean plants were exposed to a major herbivore, soybean looper (SBL) (Chrysodeixis includens Walker), under simulated drought conditions to examine the interactive effects of drought and herbivory (D × H) on leaf trichomes. Additionally, SBL growth traits were monitored under different leaf diet concentrations (10% and 20%) and trichome enriched diets …

Silicone-based implants have been widely used in breast reconstruction but have also been associated with poorly understood complications, including pathologic foreign body responses such as capsular contracture. In this study, we leveraged 3D-printing technology to generate silicone-based implants in a novel, anatomically relevant, prepectoral rat model. We used this model to evaluate the response to an extracellular matrix-based product: ovine-derived reinforced tissue matrix (RTM). Two-piece negative molds were developed through computer-aided design and 3D-printed. The molds were filled with various polydimethylsiloxane mixtures and dip-coated to fabricate implants. Implant material characterization revealed that the implants retained the original 3D-printed mold shape …

Association Of Hair Shedding Level With Cow–Calf Performance In Summer-Bred Dexter Cattle, Ichard Browning Jr, Emily G. Hayes, Kaylee S. Hillin, Maria Lenira Leite-Browning

Food and Animal Sciences Faculty Research

Reduced winter hair shedding in beef cows through the spring and summer months may contribute to heat stress and reduced performance in spring-calving herds. This study evaluated the relationship of hair shedding with the fertility and maternal performance of 72 Dexter cows. Hair shedding data for 20 May, 3 June, 17 June, and 1 July in 2019 were used to classify cows as high or low hair shedders. Hair shedding levels were lower (p < 0.05) for 2-year-old cows than for cows 7+ years of age for the first three dates and lower (p ≤ 0.05) for lactating cows than for dry cows on the first two dates. Concurrent and four years of historical performance records were used to assess the associations between hair shedding and cow–calf performance. Data from 230 natural matings in July and August from 2015 to 2019 were analyzed. Birth to weaning weight data were recorded from 2016 to 2019 on 124 spring-born calves. Cow fertility was higher (p < 0.05) for high-shed cows than for low-shed cows for the 1 July classification. When the records from cows that were dry in 2019 were excluded from testing, fertility was higher (p < 0.05) for high-shed cows than for low-shed cows at all four scoring dates. The associations of cow hair shedding levels with preweaning calf performance were minimal. Dexter cows exhibiting higher hair shedding levels in the spring and summer expressed higher summer fertility.

Coexisting Salps Exhibit Distinct Feeding Selectivity On Microorganisms In The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, Anne W. Thompson, Kylee Lamberson, Kelly R. Sutherland

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mortality mechanisms play an important role in how oceanic microorganisms contribute to global biogeochemical cycles. Salps are widespread pelagic tunicates known to remove phytoplankton from coastal and high-latitude waters, but their interaction with microorganisms in the vast tropical and subtropical gyres is not well quantified. Using quantitative measurements of six major marine microorganisms in the guts of six distinct but co-occurring salp species from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, we examined the impact and dynamics of salp feeding on marine microorganisms in a vast open ocean region. All salps preferentially removed prey greater than 1 μm in diameter, including marine …

Department of Nutrition Student Projects

Abstract

Background:

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GIP/GLP-1 RAs) have revolutionized obesity management, producing unprecedented weight loss outcomes. Their widespread use has outpaced research on nutritional implications, adverse events, and evidence-based guidance for dietitians. Given the central role of nutrition practitioners in supporting adults with obesity, understanding the mechanisms, risks, and nutrition-related outcomes of GLP-1 therapies is critical.

Methods:

A comprehensive literature search was conducted utilizing PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar to identify relevant peer-reviewed articles on the topic of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) use and nutrition-related …

Development Of Salinomycin Analogs As Potential Anti-Cancer Agents, Pavan Goud Juluri

Theses and Dissertations

Salinomycin, a poly-ionophore antibiotic originally isolated from Streptomyces albus, exhibits antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Over the years Salinomycin has been studied in the effects it has on cancer, specifically cancer stem cells. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) is an enzyme involved in DNA repair. Inhibiting PARP has been explored as a strategy in cancer treatment, particularly in cancers with defective DNA repair mechanisms, such as those with BRCA mutations. The benzo-thiazoles, and -imidazoles are identified as inhibitor scaffolds, which compete with nicotinamide in the binding pocket of human poly- and mono-ADP-ribosylating enzymes. Benzothiazole, and benzimidazole based compounds particularly with modification at …

All Decisions

In this licensee holdover, the tenant, who was evicted after a default judgment, filed a post-eviction Order to Show Cause seeking restoration. The court granted the tenant's motion, vacating the default judgment and warrant, and restoring the tenant to possession. The court found a reasonable excuse for the default based on the tenant not receiving notice, applying a totality of the circumstances analysis for CPLR § 5015(a)(1). A potentially meritorious defense of succession rights was also established. The decision emphasized the court's preference for deciding matters on their merits rather than by default.

Exercise Testing And Training For Individuals With Cystic Fibrosis, Najlaa Zayed Alotaibi Jan 2026

Exercise Testing And Training For Individuals With Cystic Fibrosis, Najlaa Zayed Alotaibi

ETDs from 2020-2029

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a progressive genetic disease that impacts multiple systems (e.g., respiratory system). Hence, routine cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is recommended to track the disease progression in people with CF. Besides the benefits of exercise testing, exercise training is also beneficial for long-term wellness. It is recommended that people with CF engage in at least 30–60 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 days a week. However, despite the significance of exercise testing and training for people with CF, CPET and exercise training are underutilized in international CF centers. According to the literature, the majority of international CF centers use …

Distinct epithelial cell states arise during differentiation, but mechanisms generating transcriptomic diversity among them remain poorly defined. The human ureter urothelium contains basal progenitor, intermediate cells, and terminally differentiated umbrella cells. Prior single-cell RNA sequencing revealed similar global gene expression profiles across these states, raising the question of how distinct identities emerge. Here, we show that alternative cleavage and polyadenylation (APA) introduces a major layer of transcriptomic diversity during urothelial differentiation, largely independent of changes in mRNA levels. Analysis of 13,544 urothelial cells identified hundreds of differentiation-associated APA events. Single-cell imaging revealed spatially specific APA patterns, and reporter assays demonstrated …

Smyth, Molly K. James, Emma Sullivan, Alice Hall, Tully Osmond, Emma Sheehan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) are normally uncommon in UK waters, with a mainly south-westerly distribution linked to the species’ preference for warmer conditions. However, a major population bloom occurred off southwest UK in 2025, comparable to rare historical blooms recorded in 1899–1900, 1932–33 and 1950–51. The species’ rapid growth, high fecundity and short lifespan make its populations highly responsive to environmental conditions. Evidence from fisheries landings, scientific surveys and citizen science confirmed the bloom, with commercial fisheries landings of common octopus in 2025 being almost 65 times higher than recent annual averages. The 2025 bloom and all previous blooms were …
