Diversity, Equity, Access, And Inclusion: Lessons For The Russian Language Classroom, Colleen Lucey Jan 2021

Diversity, Equity, Access, And Inclusion: Lessons For The Russian Language Classroom, Colleen Lucey

Russian Language Journal

The current special issue tackles some of the most difficult pedagogical questions facing Russian language instructors today. As the articles illustrate, there is a growing awareness of the possibilities of critical pedagogy to dismantle existing hierarchies and to create inclusive spaces for learners. The authors included in this special issue provide us with what the field has long needed yet direly lacked: scholarship that offers both theoretical and practical guidance to integrate diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI) in curricula and study abroad programming. A number of the authors turn, rightfully so, to existing research by foreign-language specialists who have …

The past two decades have witnessed enrollments in American colleges and universities for U.S. residents aged 18 to 24 increase from 35 percent in 2000 to 41 percent in 2018. Within this demographic, those identifying in census data as Hispanic/Latinx increased during the same period from 22 to 36 percent, as Black 31 to 37 percent, as Asian 56 to 59 percent, as Indigenous/Native American 16 to 24 percent, and as bi-or multiracial 38 to 44 percent (Hussar et al. 2020, 125). As the student population of higher education in the United States begins to reflect the national demographic portrait …

Rectifying Wikipedia Racial Bias In A Russian Language Classroom, Veronika Trotter, Svitlana Melnyk

Russian Language Journal

Over the last decade, minority representation has emerged as a subject of critical self-reflection in the field of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (SEEES), prompting discussions that have centered on both the limited participation of minority populations within the community of SEEES scholars and students and the relative lack of attention that minority communities receive in SEEES teaching and research. Efforts to grapple with both issues became more urgent in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and the massive protests for racial justice throughout the United States and beyond. Major centers for SEEES teaching and research have organized well-attended …

On March 20, 2021, one of my students sent a message through his college network: “Happy New Year! Happy Naýryz! Наурыз құтты бол- сын! Naýryz qutty bolsyn! S Vesennim prazdnikom Nauryz! ... Remember to celebrate with friends and family (family meaning chosen, adoptive, or biological, etc.)!” This student grew up in a Spanish-speaking foster family and recently, after a DNA test, discovered his ancestral roots in Bashkiria, Tatarstan, and Kazakhstan. He now wants to learn more about his origins, and he is looking for sources to learn about non-Russian languages and cultures in the Russian Federation (RF) and former USSR. …

Special attention is given to identifying Russian language opportunities for American high school students, expanding accessibility, centering program materials on inclusion, and embedding perspectives of the robust regional diversity within the Russian-speaking world into the NSLI-Y program. While the NSLI-Y program partners with many organizations in various locations, examples provided here focus on NSLI-Y programs implemented by American Councils for International …

The Russian Coordinating Conjunctions И And А: Their Meaning, Function, And Pedagogy, Mark J. Elson Jan 2021

The Russian Coordinating Conjunctions И And А: Their Meaning, Function, And Pedagogy, Mark J. Elson

Russian Language Journal

This paper is concerned with the systemic status of the coordinating conjunctions и and а in Contemporary Standard Russian. Most previous treatments of и and а have, without comment, viewed them as minimal syntactic units (i.e., words) defined, for systemic purposes, functionally—as equating or likening in the case of и but contrasting or opposing in that of а. However, these treatments, whether intentionally or unwittingly, have left unattended the possibility that и and а, although syntactic units, are more properly defined grammatically (i.e., are systemically characterized by an invariant grammatical meaning of which their functions are derivative).1 At …

Russian Language Journal

In 2005 a collection of articles appeared under the title Ключевые идеи русской языковой картины мира (‘Key Ideas of the Russian Linguistic Worldview’), authored by Anna A. Zalizniak, Irina B. Levontina and Aleksei D. Shmelev and published by the Языки славянской культуры (‘Languages of Slavic Culture’) publishing house in Moscow. The studies in Key Ideas of the Russian Linguistic Worldview were inspired by the work of Anna Wierzbicka, most notably her Understanding Cultures through Their Key Words: English, Russian, Polish, German, Japanese (Oxford University Press, 1997). The idea behind the volume is that language communities operate with a ‘linguistic picture …

Analytic Hierarchy Process: An Innovative Technique For Culturally Tailoring Evidence-Based Interventions To Reduce Health Disparities, Jaime A. Corvin, Isabella Chan, Claudia X. Aguado, Ian Dollman, Junius Gonzales

Global Health Faculty Publications

Latinos in the United States represent a disproportionate burden of illness and disease and face barriers to accessing health care and related resources. Culturally tailored, evidence-based interventions hold promise in addressing many of these challenges. Yet, ensuring patient voice is vital in the successful development and implementation of such interventions. Thus, this paper examines the application of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to inform the augmentation and implementation of an evidence-based chronic disease self-management programme for underserved Latinos living with both minor depression and chronic illness. The process of AHP allows for direct input from the individuals that would utilize such …

Reporting Religion: Narrating Religion In Gaming Journalism, Gregory P. Perreault Jan 2021

Reporting Religion: Narrating Religion In Gaming Journalism, Gregory P. Perreault

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

In journalism, issues of religion are increasingly reported by nonspecialists or specialists in other fields. This poses obvious challenges. This study explores the narrative frames employed by gaming journalists in reporting about religion in video games. This was done through semi-structured interviews with gaming journalists (n = 17) and an exploration of their produced gaming reviews (n = 116) in relation to games with religious narratives. The study argues that journalists largely did not identify much regarding religion in their own content–even more explicit religious presentations were argued to have little role in a “game.” However, the clearest …

Lynn Margulis And Boris Kozo-Polyansky: How The Symbiogenesis Was Translated From Russian, Victor Fet

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

This contribution details the complex history of the early work by Boris Kozo-Polyansky (1924) that became available in English translation 86 years after it was published in Russian. The great American naturalist Lynn Margulis—whose serial endosymbiosis theory was presciently predated by Kozo-Polyansky by four decades—was instrumental in organizing this resurrection and ‘horizontal transfer’ of knowledge, forgotten by that time even in Russia.

Trademarks In Conversation: Assessing Genericism After Booking.Com, Laura A. Heymann Jan 2021

Trademarks In Conversation: Assessing Genericism After Booking.Com, Laura A. Heymann

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

It is a fundamental principle of U.S. trademark law that to serve as a trademark, a word or phrase must "indicate the source" of the goods or services with which it is associated and, conversely, that a term that is understood to be the common name of a good or service is "generic" and cannot be protected as a trademark. Yet it still seems difficult to determine exactly what each concept means, particularly when the actual "source" of any goods or services might be opaque to consumers.

In part, this difficulty comes from the fact that status as a trademark …

Levels Of Interpersonal Trust Across Different Types Of Environment: The Micro-Macro Interplay Between Relational Distance And Human Ecology, Yiming Jing, Huajian Cai, Michael Harris Bond, Yang Li, Adam W. Stivers, Qianbao Tan Jan 2021

Levels Of Interpersonal Trust Across Different Types Of Environment: The Micro-Macro Interplay Between Relational Distance And Human Ecology, Yiming Jing, Huajian Cai, Michael Harris Bond, Yang Li, Adam W. Stivers, Qianbao Tan

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Social and behavioral scientists have long investigated the relationship between interpersonal trust and features of the environment. However, it remains unclear how the microenvironment of relational distance (i.e., social proximity between 2 persons) interacts with the macroenvironment of human ecology (i.e., social and natural environments) to predict people’s levels of trusting other persons. In this research, we tackled this puzzle using diverse methodologies (e.g., meta-analysis, experiment, and multilevel analysis) and large, cultural-group samples. Four studies found that, across many countries (e.g., 77 countries in Study 3) and regions within a country (e.g., 28 Chinese provinces in Study 4), members of …

Preschool Mathematics Performance And Executive Function: Rural-Urban Comparisons Across Time, Jacob A. Esplin, Ann M. Berghout Austin, Belinda Blevins-Knabe, Brionne G. Neilson, Robert F. Corwyn

Faculty Publications

This longitudinal study examined the relationship between executive function (EF) and mathematics with rural and urban preschool children. A panel of direct and indirect EF measures were used to compare how well individual measures, as well as analytic approaches, predicted both numeracy and geometry skill. One hundred eighteen children, ages 39 to 68 months, were given EF and mathematics assessments twice, approximately six months apart, concurrent to their teachers completing an indirect assessment of EF for each child. Results suggest: (1) the child’s age determines if a panel of direct EF measures is a better predictor of numeracy and geometry …

Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory And His Ideas On Promoting Creativity, Hani Morgan Jan 2021

Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory And His Ideas On Promoting Creativity, Hani Morgan

Faculty Publications

This book chapter highlights Howard Gardner's contributions to the areas of education and creativity. It includes an introductory section on his background and accomplishments. The chapter focuses on his theory of multiple intelligences, Gardner's best-known theory, and provides details on how he got the idea for this theory. It offers an explanation of this theory and the implications it has for educators. His theory of human intelligence contradicts the view that there is one type of intelligence that could be measured by standardized tests. Gardner first described seven intelligences and later added an eighth. The chapter also focuses on Gardner's …

User Demographics And Censorship On Sina Weibo, Wayne Kenney, Christopher S. Leberknight Jan 2021

User Demographics And Censorship On Sina Weibo, Wayne Kenney, Christopher S. Leberknight

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper investigates the relationship between demographics and the frequency of censored posts (weibos) on Sina Weibo. Our results indicate that demographics such as location, gender and paid for features do not provide a good degree of predictive power but help explain how censorship is applied on social media. Using a dataset of 226 million weibos collected in 2012, we apply a binomial regression model to evaluate the predictive quality of user demographics to identify candidates that may be targeted for censorship. Our results suggest male users who are verified (pay for mobile and security features) are more likely to …

Assessment Challenges In Acquired Aphasia In Multilingual Individuals, Monica Norvik, Mira Goral Jan 2021

Assessment Challenges In Acquired Aphasia In Multilingual Individuals, Monica Norvik, Mira Goral

Publications and Research

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder resulting from damage to the brain, most typically a stroke in the left cerebral hemisphere. The degree and type of impairment vary depending on the site and size of the lesion, and the extent to which people with aphasia recover – with time and therapeutic intervention – their pre-stroke linguistic skills varies, depending on exogenous and endogenous variables. Multilingual speakers who acquire aphasia may exhibit comparable or different profiles of impairment in each of their languages. The present chapter explores the challenges associated with the assessment of all languages of multilingual and multicultural speakers …

Strengthening The Semantic Verb Network In Multilingual People With Aphasia: Within- And Cross-Language Treatment Effects, Aviva Lerman, Mira Goral, Lisa Edmonds, Loraine K. Obler Jan 2021

Strengthening The Semantic Verb Network In Multilingual People With Aphasia: Within- And Cross-Language Treatment Effects, Aviva Lerman, Mira Goral, Lisa Edmonds, Loraine K. Obler

Publications and Research

In multilingual people, semantic knowledge is predominantly shared across languages.
Providing semantic-focused treatment to people with aphasia has been posited to strengthen
connectivity within association cortices that subserve semantic knowledge. In multilingual people, such treatment should result in within- and cross-language generalisation to all languages, although not equally. We investigated treatment effects in two multilingual participants with aphasia who received verb-based semantic treatment in two pre-stroke highly
proficient languages. We compared within- and cross-language generalisation patterns across languages, finding within- and cross-language generalisation after treatment in the less-impaired, pre-morbidly more-proficient first-acquired language (L1). This observation supports the theory that connectivity …

Purpose of Review

We summarize recent published work concerning assessment and treatment of aphasia in bilingual and multilingual people and review current related models of treatment outcomes. As well, we discuss studies that address the recently debated topic of cognitive processes in bilingual individuals with aphasia, with a focus on the effects of bilingualism on aphasia recovery and its potential protective effects.

Recent Findings

Providing assessment and treatment tools that best serve multilingual individuals with aphasia and unpacking the variables and mechanisms that underlie response to treatment have emerged as goals of several recent studies. Additionally, while findings are still …

“Rule Of Inclusion" Confusion, Dora Klein Jan 2021

“Rule Of Inclusion" Confusion, Dora Klein

Faculty Articles

Some rules of evidence are complex. The federal rules governing the admissibility of hearsay statements,' for example, include at least forty different provisions. Numerous judges and scholars have commented on the complexity of the hearsay rules. Not all rules of evidence are complex, however. For example, the federal rules governing the admissibility of character evidence are relatively straightforward: evidence that is offered for the purpose of proving character is inadmissible, subject to a few well-defined exceptions. Despite this relative straightforwardness, many of the federal circuit courts of appeals have overlaid the rules regarding character evidence particularly Rule 404(b)--with unnecessary interpretive …
