Multilingualism In Young Children: Parents' And Teachers' Views On Effectiveness Of Communication And School Performance, Selina L.P. Mushi
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
The research conducted focuses on children's use of
multiple languages in their natural environments at
home and at school. The study examined factors that
triggered use of, and fluency in multiple languages, and
how fluency in different languages related to thought
processes, communication, and school performance.
Parents’ and Teachers’ views were the main sources of
information. Data were collected in 3 schools from
Kilimanjaro, and Arusha in Tanzania. The 3 schools
were determined to include multilingual children; with
all languages (two or more) being used on a regular
basis. The data included parent questionnaire
responses, parent interview notes, and teacher …

Accessing School Content Using Multiple Languages In Early Childhood, Selina L.P. Mushi
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
This study examined use of multiple languages in learning school content in early childhood. Data were collected from 25 classrooms in five schools in Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Dar es Salaam regions in Tanzania. The data collection process included structured classroom observations of teacher-student interactions, parent questionnaire responses and interviews notes, and teacher interview notes. These sets were analyzed separately and then triangulated to determine convergence of the study findings. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 15.0) was used to summarize numerical data and to correlate variables (age, gender, number of languages spoken, school location and performance ratings by parents). …

Menstruation And The Bar Exam: Unconstitutional Tampon Bans, Bridget J. Crawford
Menstruation And The Bar Exam: Unconstitutional Tampon Bans, Bridget J. Crawford
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Some states have policies that prevent bar exam candidates from bringing their own menstrual products to the test. Via social media, awareness of these policies achieved new heights in the weeks leading up to the July 2020 bar exam. While states adopted different approaches to administering the bar exam during the COVID-19 pandemic, a small number of jurisdictions responded to public criticism by permitting test-takers to bring menstrual products with them to exams. Not all states have adopted permissive policies, however. This essay explains why outright bans on menstrual products at the bar exam likely are unconstitutional. So-called alternate policies, …

In Transition: A Microhistory Of Gay Men’S Health Crisis (Gmhc) 1986-1996, Shermont Bradwell, Danielle Kinches, Dan Pergel, Eden Lowinger
Research Days Posters 2021
Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) formed in NYC in response to the stigma, discrimination, and insufficient governmental assistance in the beginning years of the AIDS epidemic. Individuals and groups affected by AIDS were being denied critical resources such as healthcare, social services, and housing. Many lost their jobs, the support of their families, and were dealing with increasing social isolation. GMHC’s staff and volunteers responded by providing a range of services, including: medical, legal, and financial information, counseling, and advocacy, as well as social and emotional support. Although GMHC began as an organization primarily focused on the needs of the …
Healthcare Inequity Among Undocumented Immigrants, Rashmina Sayeeda
Healthcare Inequity Among Undocumented Immigrants, Rashmina Sayeeda
Research Days Posters 2021
Access to healthcare should be seen as a right for every person regardless of legal status. An efficient healthcare system relies on frequent check-ins instead of delayed interventions, which can prove costly both physically and financially for the patient. This presentation investigates alternative medicine being replaced by preventive, primary healthcare and its impacts among the undocumented immigrant population in the United States. For a demographic that does not have any access to programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Obamacare, undoumented immigrants have had to find more accessible and financially feasible methods of care. This presentation argues that while these alternative sources …

Special Education Administrators' Understanding And Influences On Least Restrictive Environment Within The Seventh Circuit Court System, Tiffany Amber Frey
Special Education Administrators' Understanding And Influences On Least Restrictive Environment Within The Seventh Circuit Court System, Tiffany Amber Frey
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Special education services provided in public schools today are rooted in the Federal Law passed in 1975 known as the Education for all Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA). Since 1975 this law has undergone revisions, now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) but law provided the foundation to guarantee all public-school children the right to a free and appropriate public education in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). The federal court system served as an avenue for parents and school officials to settle disagreements around IDEA. The objective of the study was to determine Illinois special education administrators understanding …

“Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá”: Memory, The Hyphen, And Julia Alvarez’S How The García Girls Lost Their Accents, Daniel L. Archer
Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)
One of the intellectual and emotional labors undertaken by children of immigrants is having to negotiate their place in between two different cultures. Existence in this in-between space is understandably challenging and is explored in Julia Alvarez’s How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, as the protagonist Yolanda and her sisters struggle to find themselves in between American and Dominican cultures. This article argues that memory plays a key role in navigating this space, as Alvarez constructs her semi-autobiographical work in reverse chronology, allowing Yolanda to work through the decision of where she believes she fits best using a series …
Lost Sheep, Lost Coins, And Lost Meanings, Jenny Rebecca Rytting
Lost Sheep, Lost Coins, And Lost Meanings, Jenny Rebecca Rytting
BYU Studies
Three of the best known and most loved of Jesus’s parables occur together in the fifteenth chapter of Luke as a response to the Pharisees’ disapproval of Jesus’s association with sinners: the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin (also known as the lost drachma or lost groat), and the lost (or prodigal) son. In the teaching and preaching traditions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, these parables (especially the first two) have primarily been interpreted as a call for missionary work, particularly reactivation. For example, President David O. McKay suggested that the three parables represent …

Pandemic, Plague, Pestilence And The Tropics: Critical Inquiries From Arts, Humanities And Social Sciences, Anita Lundberg, Kalala J. Ngalamulume, Jean Segata, Arbaayah Ali Termizi, Chrystopher J. Spicer
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
The Tropics have long been associated with exotic diseases and epidemics. This historical imaginary arose with Aristotle’s notion of the tropics as the ‘torrid zone’, a geographical region virtually uninhabitable to temperate peoples due to the hostility of its climate, and persisted in colonial imaginaries of the tropics as pestilential latitudes requiring slave labour. The tropical sites of colonialism gave rise to urgent studies of tropical diseases which lead to (racialised) changes in urban planning. The Tropics as a region of pandemic, plague and pestilence has been challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic. The novel coronavirus did not (simply) originate in …
Tensions In Welcoming Lgbt Older Adults: Discourses Of Legitimization And Silence In A Senior Center, Megan C. Mccoy
Tensions In Welcoming Lgbt Older Adults: Discourses Of Legitimization And Silence In A Senior Center, Megan C. Mccoy
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
Researchers are actively exploring how historical institutionalized silences contribute to health disparities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Yet, none have considered LGBT elders within the specific context of community-based senior centers. My study addressed the research question: how does the discourse of senior centers create welcoming environments, or alternately construct silences, for LGBT older adults? Through an integrated conceptual framework engaging the critical lens of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice in tandem with conceptualizations of silence found in feminist theory and scholar of Black women’s intellectual history, I employed an embedded single case design …

The Berlin-Tokyo Film Axis And A Troubled Co-Production: The Makers Of New Earth/The Samurai's Daughter (1937), Qinna Shen
German Faculty Research and Scholarship
Co-productions are often notoriously difficult, and this was certainly the case in 1936–37 for the most important co-production between Nazi Germany and Japan. What should have been one joint film for the international market turned out to be two different versions: New Earth in Japanese and English by Itami Mansaku and The Samurai’s Daughter in German and Japanese by Arnold Fanck. This article focuses on three filmmakers – producer Kawakita Nagamasa and the directors Fanck and Itami – to better understand the production and reception of the films and what led to the split between the directors. The push for …
Interpreting Injunctions, F. Andrew Hessick, Michael Morley
Interpreting Injunctions, F. Andrew Hessick, Michael Morley
Faculty Publications
Injunctions are powerful remedies. They can force a person to act or refrain from acting, dictate policies that the government must adopt, or even refashion public institutions. Violations of an injunction can result in contempt.
Despite the importance of injunctions, courts have applied an astonishingly wide range of contradictory approaches to interpreting them. They have likewise disagreed over whether appellate courts should defer to trial courts’ interpretations or instead review those interpretations de novo. Virtually no scholarship has been written on these topics.
This Article proposes that courts apply a modified textualist approach to injunctions. Under this scheme, courts would …
Is The Word “Consumer” Biasing Trademark Law?, Dustin Marlan
Is The Word “Consumer” Biasing Trademark Law?, Dustin Marlan
Faculty Publications
Our trademark law uses the term “consumer” constantly, reflexively, and unconsciously to label the subject of its purpose—the purchasing public. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, trademark law has “a specialized mission: to help consumers identify goods and services they wish to purchase, as well as those they want to avoid.” As one leading commentator puts it, “trademarks are a property of consumers’ minds,” and “the consumer, we are led to believe, is the measure of all things in trademark law.”
Much criticism has been rightly levied against trademark law’s treatment of the consumer as passive, ignorant, and gullible. For …

Speed-Sensorless Predictive Torque Controlled Induction Motor Drive Withfeed-Forward Control Of Load Torque For Electric Vehicle Applications, Emrah Zerdali̇, Ridvan Demi̇r
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Nowadays, the global trend is towards reducing CO2 emissions and one solution is to replace internal combustion vehicles with electric vehicles. To this end, electric drive system, the most crucial part of an electric vehicle, has gained importance and has become a major research field. The induction motor (IM) is one of the best candidates for electric vehicle applications due to its advantages such as having simple and robust design, its low cost maintenance requirements and the ability to operate in harsh environments. However, it has a highly nonlinear model with timevarying electrical and mechanical parameters making them difficult to …

Ecological And Holistic Analysis Of The Epistemic Value Of Law Libraries, Paul D. Callister, Dana Neacsu
Ecological And Holistic Analysis Of The Epistemic Value Of Law Libraries, Paul D. Callister, Dana Neacsu
Law Faculty Publications
We examine the libraries' roles within the "epistemic foundation of society.” Our analysis is in response to the omission of Yale Law Dean Gerken of the role of libraries in her recent article about legal education's new focus and to remarks by AALS President Vicki Jackson that suggest an uncertain role for libraries. We have adapted holistic ecological media theory, as developed by Ronald Deibert, to reject a technologically deterministic view of libraries as having no future. We have considered the role of law libraries in the social epistemology or cognitive authority of the legal community, the role of law …
Exploring School Psychologists' Perceived Preparedness, Self-Efficacy, And Motivations For Practice In Urban Schools, Kiley Callahan
Exploring School Psychologists' Perceived Preparedness, Self-Efficacy, And Motivations For Practice In Urban Schools, Kiley Callahan
Dissertations
The fundamental goal of school psychological service delivery is to enhance the learning and mental health of all students, regardless of their school setting. However, there is evidence to suggest that school psychologists' professional needs and experiences may differ based on the context in which they work. The urban school context, in particular, is associated with several challenges that may impact school psychology practice, including the impact of systemic barriers, systematic marginalization of children and families, and limited resources. To better prepare school psychologists to support urban learners, efforts to understand their training needs must be prioritized. Still, the views …

Reams, Radicals And Revolutionaries: The 'Illinois Staats-Zeitung' And The German-American Milieu In Chicago, 1847-1877, Sebastian Peter Wuepper
Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes how a large, German-language newspaper, the Illinois Staats-Zeitung served the German-American immigrant community in Chicago in the second half of the nineteenth century. The German diaspora in the United States was not a secluded, separated, and isolated entity, but a node in a transnational network of cultural exchange that crossed national and natural boundaries. Newspapers contributed significantly to the creation and maintenance of this cultural sphere. The editors of the Staats-Zeitung were refugees of the failed 1848 democratic revolutions in Germany. In Germany they had been academics, intellectuals, lawyers and journalists. They brought their political convictions with …
Panpsychism And The First-Person Perspective: The Case For Panpsychist Idealism, Brentyn Ramm
Panpsychism And The First-Person Perspective: The Case For Panpsychist Idealism, Brentyn Ramm
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
In this paper I argue for a version of panpsychist idealism on first-person experiential grounds. As things always appear in my field of consciousness, there is prima facie } empirical support for idealism. Furthermore, by assuming that all things correspond to a conscious perspective or perspectives (i.e., panpsychism), realism about the world is safeguarded without the need to appeal to God (as per Berkeley's idealism). Panpsychist idealism also has a phenomenological advantage over traditional panpsychist views as it does not commit perceptual experience to massive error by denying that perceived colors are properties of things. Finally, I argue that the …

The Effect Of Coding Classes On Mathematics Achievement Of Preschool Students, Ebru Hacer Erbilgin
The Effect Of Coding Classes On Mathematics Achievement Of Preschool Students, Ebru Hacer Erbilgin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that inspired this study is that Turkish students’ mathematics rankings on global exams such as The Program for the International Students Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS) had been below the average for many years, a problem that may have rooted in children’s early experiences with mathematics. The purpose of this quantitative pretest posttest quasi-experimental control group study was to determine the effect of computer-programming classes with Code Studio on mathematics scores of preschool students. Siemens’s connectivism theory for the digital age formed the foundation for this research. A single research question regarding …
