Exploring The English Learning Strategies Of An Indigenous Papuan Student Of Indonesia, Seli Marlina Radja Leba Smrl, Ranta -. Butarbutar Sb, Basilius R. Werang Brw
The Qualitative Report
Language learning strategies are crucial for learning English as a foreign language (EFL). This study sought to reveal language learning strategies used by Daniela, an Indigenous Papuan student, in developing her knowledge and skills in English. To gain this objective, a case study (Kohlbacher, 2006) using an in-depth interview was employed. Collected data were qualitatively analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques. Results of data analysis revealed two main categories of learning strategies used by Daniela in solving her learning problems, namely direct and indirect learning strategies. In direct learning strategies Daniela dealt with memory, cognition, and compensation strategies, while in indirect …

Textual Borrowing In Dissertation Writing: Perceptions Of Supervisors And Supervisees, Yin Ling Cheung, Shuangjuan Kang
The Qualitative Report
The existing literature shows issues pertinent to students’ inappropriate textual borrowing behaviors require further examination. Our study aims to address two questions: What are the reasons why postgraduate students’ misuse their dissertation sources? How do the dissertation supervisors react to students’ inappropriate source use, if any? In this situated qualitative study (Atkinson, 2005), we used data collected through in-depth email interviews with two applied linguistics postgraduate students and their dissertation supervisors. Regarding the analytical process, the researchers condensed the provisional themes through techniques suggested by grounded theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1998). The results reveal that causes for postgraduate students’ misuse …

The Role Of College Majors On Earnings Premiums, Jeremy Glickman
The Park Place Economist
In my research paper, I will be evaluating the role that college majors play in determining wages for adult respondents to the 2009-2017 American Community Survey. I will be analyzing wages for college major categories of STEM, liberal arts, professional, social science, education, and others. The question I am seeking to answer in this paper is, which college major category leads to the highest earnings premium?

Purpose: The purpose of this sequential explanatory mixed methods study was to determine the relationship between independent study charter schoolteachers’ emotional intelligence (EQ) scores, as measured by the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT), and the number of credits earned in a learning period by their students. An additional purpose was to describe how independent study high school teachers perceive their ability to model the EQ attributes of self-awareness, self-regulation, internal motivation, empathy, and social skill (Goleman, 2006) influences student credit completion.
Methodology: This study used a mixed methods approach to collect quantitative and qualitative data from highly qualified independent …

Exegesis In The Age Of Extremism: The Future Of Christianity And Literary Studies In Higher Education, Claudia Stokes
Exegesis In The Age Of Extremism: The Future Of Christianity And Literary Studies In Higher Education, Claudia Stokes
English Faculty Research
This essay examines the consequences of the Trump presidency on the study of literature and Christianity. Despite the recent defunding of the humanities and the widespread elimination of religious studies departments, the Trump presidency gave rise to the widespread use of exegetical modes of interpretation, with many of the tenets of post-structuralism entering the cultural mainstream. How-ever, the interpretive failures of Trump supporters demonstrate the vital national importance of the humanities and the importance of formal literary and interpretive instruction.

Indigenous Population Displacement In Indonesia, Katelyn Covey
Indigenous Population Displacement In Indonesia, Katelyn Covey
Ballard Brief
Indigenous peoples in Indonesia continue to be displaced from their customary lands at high rates, with lands turned over to government and corporate entities. Two perspectives stand out in examining international variations in innovative new venture creation: institutions and national culture. However, systematic insights into the interconnections between institutional and cultural perspectives and their effects on entrepreneurship are severely lacking. In order to fill this gap, the current research integrates two prominent yet under-explored institutional and cultural factors: linguistic future-time reference (FTR) as an institutional factor and long-term orientation as a cultural factor, and considers how they are linked through the time perspective reflected in risk and uncertainty perception. Drawing upon linguistic relativity theory and cultural theory, we propose that institutions with strong FTR …

Objective: Caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) often experience debilitating caregiver burden and emotional distress. To address these negative emotional consequences of caregiving, we will test and refine a strategy training intervention - Problem-Solving Training (PST) - that promotes self-efficacy and reduces caregiver burden and depressive symptoms. Previous research supports efficacy of PST; however, we do not know exactly how many PST sessions are needed or if post-training "boosters" are required to maintain PST benefits. Additionally, we translated and culturally-adapted PST into "Descubriendo Soluciones Juntos" (DSJ), our novel intervention for Spanish-speaking caregivers.

Foundations Of Linguistics And Identity In L2 Teaching And Learning: Agency Through Linguistic Enrichment, Differentiated Instruction And Teacher Identity, Marnie Jo Petray, Rebecca Shapiro, Gladys M. Vega
Publications and Research
Language, procedure, and identity are L2 teaching/learning essentials that may promote agency and stimulate synergies among knowledge, practice, and reflection (Diaz Maggioli, 2014; Duff, 2012). This meta-report presents three studies that collectively advance agency and endorse linguistic foundations as enrichment, differentiated instruction as engagement, and teacher identity as empowerment. All of these theoretical constructs are key to successful L2 teaching and acquisition. Study 1 quantitatively reports on introductory linguistics’ presence or absence in 114 master’s programs at 54 US institutions. Findings suggest that linguistics’ curricular presence is inconsistent and training for optimal impact in the L2 classroom is lacking. Given …

World Languages and Cultures
This project undertakes the examination of several prominent Asian communities in Latin American countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, and others in understanding the diverse intersection that is the Asian-Latino culture and identity. Within the United States, there is a growing community of Asian-Latinos that share both the cultural identities of the Hispanic/Latinx community (cultural environment) and the Asian communities (familial and cultural upbringing). Likewise, in U.S. cities such as New York City and Los Angeles, there have been notable Asian-Latino restaurants that offer Asian cuisine and Latin cuisine, as well as a rise of new Asian-Latin infused cuisines …
