Language learners identity construction and language learning through narratives (Norton 2010; Johnson 2015) and multimodal technologies (Lam 2006; White 2007) have been found to be effective ways to facilitate ESL learning. Additionally, Multimodal pedagogies and narrative practices in the language classroom facilitate L2 learning, investment in language learning, and learners identity and agency construction (Crandall 2018; Johnson & Kendrick, 2017). Further, racism and linguicism are aspects of language learners lives that affect their language learning trajectories (Corona & Block, 2020; Dovchin, 2019). Few studies, however, examine how multimodal narrative practices in L2 classrooms can foster learners investment in language learning …
Prompting Self-Explanations During The Learning Of Probability: Content-Specific Versus Generic Versus Generic With A Form Of Guidance, Genghu Shi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Learners often cannot apply (transfer) the knowledge they learned from instructional settings into a new context. Therefore, their knowledge is likely inert. Research shows that learners must be actively involved in learning construction activities to enable knowledge transfer to occur. Self-explanation is one such constructive cognitive activity that involves explaining learning materials (expository texts, worked examples) to oneself with attempts to make sense of new information. It has been shown to support deep comprehension and knowledge transfer. However, self-explanations usually cannot be spontaneously generated by learners, but need to be elicited by prompts. The prompts can range from generic type …

The importance of maintaining a healthy microbiome is being recognized increasingly. Our research in the gut microbiome and environmental pollutants suggests that pollutants like particulate matter (PM2.5) and nanometals can induce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and decrease the microbiome stability. Additionally, the abusive use of antibiotics in the past has led to great changes in the microbiome and caused the rise of many antibiotic-resistant strains.Developing a new antibiotic is costly and time-consuming. Methods to improve the existing drugs should be cost-effective. A narrow-spectrum antibiotic that targets only the problematic pathogens should prevent microbiome disruption and reduce the rise of antibiotic …
Environment, Brain, And Behavior: Neuroendocrine Mechanisms Underlying Seasonal Rhythms In Stress, Immunity, And The Gut Microbiota In Siberian Hamsters (Phodopus Sungorus), Elyan Shor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The daily axial rotation of the Earth and its annual orbit around the sun both result in recurring fluctuations in geophysical cycles, thus creating cyclic changes in environmental factors. Organisms that can anticipate these environmental changes and adapt appropriately may maximize their survival and fitness. Such adaptations manifest themselves as biological rhythms: rhythmic shifts in physiology and behavior that match rhythmic shifts in environmental conditions. Among the most predictable environmental cues in temperate regions is the annual progression of changes in day length, and the capacity to measure and respond to seasonal changes in the light cycle is termed photoperiodism. …

Factorial design is one of the best ways to screen different factors in a system of study. It allows the study of the main effects and their interactions at the same time. We used the 2k-factorial design to screen different factors that affect the bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics. Through simulation studies, we examined the sensitivity and specificity of four different approaches to analyze the factorial data under different scenarios. The parametric ANOVA showed higher sensitivity and specificity for normally distributed data, but it failed largely for non-normal data. Rank-ANOVA had very high sensitivity and specificity for both normal and non-normal …
Understanding The Subjective Perceptions Of Higher Education Diversity Practitioners On Effective Leadership Practices For Transformational Campus Diversity Culture Change, Bobbie R. Porter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Successfully leading transformative diversity culture change is one of the most significant challenges facing modern higher education. This study sought out campus diversity officers perceptions, shaped by their lived experiences as diversity practitioners, to identify and deeply understand diversity leadership practices that they perceived to be most effective in transforming diversity culture on higher education campuses. A Q-methodology was used to investigate the subjective perceptions of campus diversity officers with membership in the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education and who represented numerous institution types, including four-year public, four-year private, and community colleges. Using both quantitative and qualitative …

Although 21 states are currently designating a portion of their Every Student Succeeds Act funds specifically for novice principal induction and support, Tennessee is not currently one of these states. This dissertation uses a qualitative case study approach to interview Tennessee principals serving in years four to five, who did not have formal mentorship support during their novice years, to gather their experiences and support needs during this time. The researcher reviews the current literature on novice principal mentorship programs across the country through the lens of Krams Mentoring Model and Suchmans Program Theory before connecting the literature with the …

Artificial intelligence-enabled applications on edge devices have the potential to revolutionize disease detection and monitoring. Smartphones, with increased processing speed, storage capacity, and integrated sensors, hold tremendous promise in physiological sensing, monitoring, and development of Smart and Connected Communities (SCC). The major challenges are development of user-friendly low-cost sensing of physiological data, seamless data transfer while maintaining privacy, and data processing and inference at the edge while keeping the system performance at an expected level. The overall focus of my dissertation work is the development of a smart health (sHealth) framework that uses embedded artificial intelligence, such as edge computing, …

Asthma is a global public health concern with limited preventive strategies. Recently, DNA methylation (DNAm) has been studied to understand the underlying pathogenesis of asthma. The role of DNAm in asthma acquisition from pre- to post- adolescence is unclear, and how its role changes from adolescence to adulthood is also unknown. The studies in this dissertation were carried out using data in two birth cohorts with one as a discovery cohort and the other as replication cohort. Longitudinal assessments in both cohorts revealed that the associations of DNAm at 62 Cytosine-Guanine sites (CpG sites) with asthma acquired during adolescence were …

T HE report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [47] highlighted the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strive for decarbonization in order to restrict global warming. The Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty on climate change, has a vision of accelerating technology development and transfer [92] in order to reduce harmful carbon emissions. The development of new and innovative disruptive technologies to ameliorate and reverse the harmful effects of carbon emissions is emphasized by governments and international agencies [6], [53], [59], [102]. Large incumbent firms are well resourced to conduct this research and development (R&D), although …

Rationale Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified numerous loci associated with lower pulmonary function. Pulmonary function is strongly related to smoking and has also been associated with asthma and dust endotoxin. At the individual SNP level, genome-wide analyses of pulmonary function have not identified appreciable evidence for gene by environment interactions. Genetic Risk Scores (GRSs) may enhance power to identify gene–environment interactions, but studies are few.
Methods We analysed 2844 individuals of European ancestry with 1000 Genomes imputed GWAS data from a case–control study of adult asthma nested within a US agricultural cohort. Pulmonary function traits were FEV1, …

Scintigraphy is a common nuclear medicine method to image molecular target’s bio-distribution and pharmacokinetics through the use of radiotracers and gamma cameras. The patient’s images are obtained by using a pair of opposing large flat gamma ray detectors equipped with parallel-hole lead or tungsten collimators that preferentially detect gamma-rays that are emitted perpendicular to the plane of the detector. The resulting images form an anterior/posterior (A/P) planar image pairs. The obtained images are contaminated by noise and contain artifacts caused by gamma-ray attenuation, collimator penetration, scatter and other detrimental factors. Post-filtering of the images can reduce the noise, but at …

Identifying Alternate Resources And Adjusting Expectations For Senior Design Projects During The Covid-19 Pandemic Of 2020, Jay R. Goldberg
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic required capstone design course instructors to transition to online learning. Student project teams were denied access to resources needed to construct and test prototypes scheduled to be delivered to project sponsors and clients at the end of the semester. Face-to-face collaboration was replaced with virtual team meetings. At Marquette University, efforts to identify (1) barriers to completing projects, (2) potential alternate prototyping resources, (3) adjustments to expectations of teams, and (4) changes to course deliverable requirements were completed. The results of these activities, the thought process used to guide students through the search for …
