Time Clustering In Microstructure, Neighborhood Blight In Real Estate, And Inter-Firm Connections In Corporate Alliances, Wei Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Essay 1: We introduce and analyze a new intraday measure of trade-time clustering which we demonstrate to be superior to volume and duration at detecting periodic grouping of trades. In stable markets, both elevated information flow and lower trading costs lead to greater trade-time clustering, while in volatile markets only lower trading costs lead to greater time clustering. Trade-time clustering is positively associated with contemporaneous price impact, price volatility, and negatively associated with variance ratios, suggesting that trade clustering contributes to price discovery. Following increased time clustering, we observe more aggressive orders from informed traders, but less HFT in stable …

"I Didn't Feel Doctoral Worthy": Motivating Factors For Black Female, First-Generation Doctoral Students, Margaret Cole Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines the motivating factors for Black female, first-generation doctoral students. The critical problem I found was that little is known how Black female doctoral students persevere to completing their doctoral degrees. Therefore, this study sought to identify factors that influence first-generation Black females to pursue and complete a doctorate. I approached the study through the theoretical lens of Womanism. Womanism is defined as a theory based on Black womens lives experiences, works to change negative images of Black women, and restores a balance to the community through a lens of spirituality. In chapter 2, I identified the critical …

Bridging Symtpoms In Ptsd And Suicidal Ideation: Disentangling Dysfunctional Cognitions And Emotions In The Ptsd Symptoms D2, D3, And D4, Han Tran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Specific PTSD symptoms, certain dysfunctional cognitions and emotions in particular, may be central to the PTSD and the PTSD/suicidal ideation comorbidity networks. The present study applied network analysis to identify 1) central symptoms in PTSD, and 2) bridging symptoms that may account for the comorbidity between PTSD and suicidal ideation. In both networks, the DSM-5 PTSD symptoms D2, D3, and D4 were disentangled, where the cognitions and emotions (negative thoughts about the self, self-blame, negative thoughts about the world, blaming others, anger, fear, shame, and guilt) within these symptoms were measured and analyzed as separate variables. Additionally, variables from the …

Switching Between The L1 And L2: Teachers Corrective Feedback And Learner Uptake, Md Nesar Uddin Jan 2021

Switching Between The L1 And L2: Teachers Corrective Feedback And Learner Uptake, Md Nesar Uddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Over the years, an interest in switching between the L1 and L2 in L2 classroom instruction has grown in SLA research in parallel with the uptick in corrective feedback (CF) research. Separate studies on CF (e.g., Shirani, 2019; Bryfonski & Ma, 2020) and L1 use (e.g., Iyitoglu, 2016) have found that CF and language switching promote L2 learning, with L1 use facilitating the accomplishment of cognitively demanding tasks. However, research has not considered how switching between languages in the provision of CF impacts learning opportunities. This dissertation combined CF and language switching and explored the role of CF practices in …

Statistical Methods For Patterns And Interconnections Between Variables With Applications In Epigenetics Data, Jiajing Wang Jan 2021

Statistical Methods For Patterns And Interconnections Between Variables With Applications In Epigenetics Data, Jiajing Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Epigenetics is one possible mechanism explaining the disease heritability withoutchanging DNA sequence. DNA methylation (DNAm), as an epigenetic factor with amemory of environmental exposure, may potentially explain the existing missingheritabability. Learning the patterns of DNAm transmission at different CpG sites andstudying the interconnection among the transmitted CpG sites is beneficial to diseaseprediction and prevention. In my dissertation, I will focus on two perspectives to study thetransmission of DNA methylation: clustering and network. The first project describes a nested Bayesian clustering method to identify DNAmethylation (DNAm) sites (CpG sites) such that DNAm is transmitted from onegeneration to the next, and to study …

The Behavior Of Rotation Criteria In Exploratory Factor Analysis With Ordinal Data: The Role Of Number Of Indicators And Number Of Factors, Rachel Lynn Ankney Jan 2021

The Behavior Of Rotation Criteria In Exploratory Factor Analysis With Ordinal Data: The Role Of Number Of Indicators And Number Of Factors, Rachel Lynn Ankney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Many considerations influence the results of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) including rotation criteria and estimation method. Past research has given recommendations for matching estimation method to measurement of indicator variables, and some recommendations exist for the choice of rotation criteria across item complexity and factor intercorrelation. Less guidance exists, however, on rotation recommendations across number of factors and indicators included in the model. To fill this gap, the present study manipulated the number of factors and indicators in EFA models with ordinal data across multiple rotation criteria and across additional data considerations. Using Monte Carlo methods, data were generated (1,000 …

Bayesian And Maximum Likelihood Estimation For Correlated Binary Data Based On The Double Binomial Distribution, John Appiah Kubi Jan 2021

Bayesian And Maximum Likelihood Estimation For Correlated Binary Data Based On The Double Binomial Distribution, John Appiah Kubi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In the statistical analysis of binary data, usually the binomial distribution is themost commonly used probability model in many applications. The binomial is a very usefuldistribution in many practical applications due to its simplicity and having a parameter thathas an intuitive meaning. However, it has a unique feature that is the variance depending onthe mean, an assumption that does not reflect reality in many practical applications especiallyin cases where the data exhibits greater variability than predicted by the distribution. Thetwo-parameter double binomial model introduced by Efron (1986) may be considered as auseful alternative to the one-parameter binomial distributions, given that …

Some research (e.g., Dobao, 2012; Shehadeh, 2011; Wigglesworth & Storch, 2009; Storch, 2005) suggests that collaborative L2 writing results in higher quality L2 writing production than individual writing. Similarly, collaborative L2 writing has also been found to bring about more L2 learning opportunities for learners (e.g., Dobao & Blum, 2013; Dobao, 2012; Wigglesworth & Storch, 2012; Brooks & Swain, 2009). However, much is still unknown about how CW promotes higher quality L2 writing and other L2 learning opportunities. The purpose of the current study was to examine second language collaborative writing in an under-researched EFL context to determine (1) whether …

Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The high prevalence of conditions among adolescents such as anxiety, depression, substance use and suicide has become a global concern. Given the growing rates of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems at the onset of adolescence, researchers have begun to find interest in identifying associations that account for dysfunctional patterns and problem behaviors. Findings suggest that these negative psychological and behavioral outcomes could be linked to exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like abuse, neglect, violence, and household dysfunction. The present study investigated associations between ACEs, difficulties in emotion regulation, and problem behaviors among a sample of 43 adolescents age 11-17 …

Reclaiming The Revolutionaries: African American Organizing During The Interwar Period In Memphis, Tennessee, Matthew Isaacs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The global black freedom struggle of the early twentieth century took many turns, while building momentum into the post-World War II era. Along the way, an interracial coterie of activists and disparate organizations rallied around a mass movement for black advancement. They enlarged avenues of resistance and developed strategies for cooperative alliances that laid the groundwork for future organizations and activists, often in areas that remain understudied. This dissertation examines one of those locations, Memphis, Tennessee, and its engagement with the global black freedom struggle during the interwar period. Due to a convergence of local, national, and international forces, the …

The Empirical Relationship Between Cds Premiums, Bond Yields, And Stock Prices During The 2007-2008 Financial Crisis: Causality, Co-Movement And Price Discovery, Yi Lu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation provides a comprehensive study of the credit-default swaps (CDS). In the short-run, we review and synthesize literature across disciplines and offer a theoretical framework of the empirical relationship between CDS premiums, bond yields, and stock prices. Theoretically, the credit risk captured by CDS and bond spreads should be equal, since both CDS and bond spreads are the risk premiums associated with corporations risky instruments. However, data reveal a significant difference between the two spreads. Stock prices, as well, should impact CDS and bond spreads. In a panel time-series framework with daily data of 96 corporations from North America, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In the first essay, hedonic regression on transaction data is the favored method to measure the impact of adverse environmental characteristics. However, this method only weakly identifies the direct causal relationship of unfavorable factors on house prices. The paper found a weak negative impact of 23% on the house price index in the early stage between treatment and control zip code using a robust two-way fixed effects estimation. The diagnostic of the two-way fixed effects estimators found no issues with negative weights, but the sites exhibit a wide range of heterogeneous treatment effects. In the second essay, we found empirically …

Explanation Techniques Using Markov Logic Networks, Khan Mohammad Al Farabi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Explaining the results of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) algorithms is crucial given the rapid growth and potential applicability of these methods in critical domains including healthcare, defense, autonomous driving, etc. While AI/ML approaches yield highly accurate results in many challenging tasks such as natural language understanding, visual recognition, game playing, etc., the underlying principles behind such results are not easily understood. Thus, the trust in AI/ML methods for critical application domains is significantly lacking. While there has been progress in explaining classifiers, there are two significant drawbacks. First, current explanation approaches assume independence in the data instances …

The Effect Of Pre- And Postnatal Diet Exposure On Gut Morphology, Function And Inflammation, Suman Sharma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Consumption of high fat diet and obesity have been shown to increase risk of intestinal inflammation. Interestingly, early life exposure to a high fat diet (HFD), during gestation and lactation, also increases the risk of these inflammatory gut conditions in the offspring even in adulthood. Therefore, we hypothesized that using a rationally designed diet containing high amounts of fermentable fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, components that are known to improve gut inflammation, and providing this diet at weaning will improve inflammatory conditions later in life. Healthy (8 male and 8 female) C57BL/6 mice were used. 6 pairs were given HF …
