Minding The Gap In Domestic Violence Legislation: Should States Adopt Course Of Conduct Laws?, Teresa Manring
Minding The Gap In Domestic Violence Legislation: Should States Adopt Course Of Conduct Laws?, Teresa Manring
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
In the United States, there is a gap between the way that sociologists, psychologists, legal scholars, and advocates define domestic violence and the way that criminal laws define domestic violence. Experts largely agree: domestic violence occurs when a partner exercises continuous power and control over the other. In this view, domestic violence occurs via a pattern of abusive behaviors that unfolds over time, and its manifestations include both physically-violent and emotionally-abusive behaviors. In contrast, criminal statutes throughout the United States continue to conceptualize domestic violence as single acts of physical violence or threats of physical violence. During the past several …

Assessing Changes In The Epidemiology Of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis In Southwest Colombia Following The Peace Accord With Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias De Colombia (Farc), Matthew Stephen Benczkowski
Public Health Theses
The Colombian Conflict persisted for over 50 years, recently coming to an end in November 2016 after the signing of Colombia’s Peace Agreement between the government and FARC guerrilla group. Internal armed conflict is often entangled with the exacerbation of health outcomes, including promoting the spread of infectious diseases like cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). CL is a vector-borne parasitic disease localized to the human tegument that decreases quality of life through lesions leading to scars and associated stigmatization. This study assessed changes in demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with CL in Southwest Colombia before and after the signing of the …
Too Fast, Too Furious: Slaughterhouse Line Speeds In The Era Of Covid-19, Zoe Novic
Too Fast, Too Furious: Slaughterhouse Line Speeds In The Era Of Covid-19, Zoe Novic
Public Health Theses
Since 1998, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allowed meat companies to increase slaughter line speeds in order to increase production of meat and poultry. The USDA grants approvals known as “line speed waivers” that bypass the requirements of current speed and inspection regulations. During the Covid-19 pandemic, slaughterhouses became epicenters of Covid-19 outbreaks, which called into question safety regulations established at these facilities. The USDA continued to grant line speed waivers despite evidence that faster line speeds result in increased worker injuries, animal welfare violations, environmental protection violations, food safety violations, and higher risk of Covid-19.

Economic Regulation And Rural America, Ann M. Eisenberg
Economic Regulation And Rural America, Ann M. Eisenberg
Faculty Publications
Rural America today is at a crossroads. Widespread socioeconomic decline outside cities has fueled the idea that rural communities have been “left behind.” The question is whether these “left behind” localities should be allowed to dwindle out of existence, or whether intervention to attempt rural revitalization is warranted. Many advocate non-intervention because rural lifestyles are inefficient to sustain. Others argue that, even if the nation wanted to help, it lacks the law and policy tools to redirect rural America’s course effectively.
This Article argues that we do have the law and policy tools necessary to address rural socioeconomic marginalization, and …
The Bounds Of Energy Law, Shelley Welton
The Bounds Of Energy Law, Shelley Welton
Faculty Publications
U.S. energy law was born of fossil fuels. Consequently, our energy law has long centered on the material and legal puzzles that bringing fossil fuels to market presents. Eliminating these same carbon-producing energy sources, however, has emerged as perhaps the most pressing material transformation needed in the twenty-first century—and one that energy law scholarship has rightfully embraced. Yet in our admirable quest to aid in this transformation, energy law scholars are largely writing into the field bequeathed to us, proposing changes that tweak, but do not fundamentally challenge, last century’s tools for managing the extraction, transport, and delivery of fossil …
Feedback Control Of Fed-Batch Cultures Using Raman Spectroscopy For Metabolite Estimation, Brian Hadley
Feedback Control Of Fed-Batch Cultures Using Raman Spectroscopy For Metabolite Estimation, Brian Hadley
Master's Theses and Capstones
The monitoring and control of mammalian cell culture processes are critical for the safe and cost-effective development of biotherapeutics in drug development. Current control using off line sampling is infrequent and can miss important metabolic shifts which can impact product quality and consistency. Raman spectroscopy can provide in-line monitoring of multiple metabolites and critical process parameters to allow automation and process improvements. In this research a generic model was developed for monitoring multiple cell lines with a platform Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell process. Parameter estimation was then used for the implementation of feedback control. Two nutrient feeds were added …

Kawaii Revolution: Understanding The Japanese Aesthetics Of “Cuteness” Through Lolita And Madoka Magica, Skye Jones, Lex Lancaster
Kawaii Revolution: Understanding The Japanese Aesthetics Of “Cuteness” Through Lolita And Madoka Magica, Skye Jones, Lex Lancaster
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Kawaii (可愛い) is a Japanese term that loosely translates to “cute,” but more significantly refers to a culture of cuteness in postwar Japan. Kawaii calls to mind big-eyed baby animals and pastel colors, but these visual qualities also embody a radical worldview cultivated by Japanese girls. In this paper, I investigate the visual culture of kawaii through two of its manifestations in fashion and animation, using the scholarship on kawaii in Japan and critical theory to argue that kawaii is a revolutionary aesthetics of vulnerability. The excessive femininity, emotional expression, and idealism of kawaii culture defy the Japanese culture of …

An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of The Collectivist Coping Styles Inventory Using An Adult American Indian Sample, Micah Louis Prairie Chicken
An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of The Collectivist Coping Styles Inventory Using An Adult American Indian Sample, Micah Louis Prairie Chicken
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the factors that emerged from the Collectivist Coping Styles (CCS) inventory using an exploratory factor analysis with an adult American Indian sample. The CCS inventory was originally developed using a sample of Taiwanese college students by an American-led research team and published in 2006. The CCS consists of 30 collectivist culture-specific coping items, among other indices (e.g., trauma resolution index). Coping has largely been theorized, and subsequently measured, from a White American individualist perspective. In response, a number of researchers with interests in non-White ways of being have begun broadening this area by examining coping from …
A Structured Approach To Skin And Soft Tissue Infections (Sstis) In An Ambulatory Setting, Benjamin Silverberg
A Structured Approach To Skin And Soft Tissue Infections (Sstis) In An Ambulatory Setting, Benjamin Silverberg
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The skin is the largest, and arguably, the most vulnerable organ in the human body. Scratches and scrapes, bites and puncture wounds, impetigo and erysipelas—all these disruptions can lead to pain, swelling, and/or systemic symptoms. In this article, which is based on the Infectious Diseases Society of America’s 2014 guidelines and the World Society of Emergency Surgery and Surgical Infection Society of Europe’s 2018 consensus statement, a structured approach to skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) is reviewed, comparing treatment for suppurative and non-suppurative infections, and then discussing specific conditions commonly seen in Primary Care and Urgent Care facilities.
The Creature In The Looking Glass: Miltonic Marriage And The Female Self In Breaking Dawn, Jay Wright
The Creature In The Looking Glass: Miltonic Marriage And The Female Self In Breaking Dawn, Jay Wright
Undergraduate Research Awards
Near the close of Breaking Dawn, the final installment of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga, Edward asks his new wife Bella a question. “When will you ever see yourself clearly?” (Dawn 744). Bella has no answer for him. Edward's question and, more importantly, Bella's apparent inability to answer is symptomatic of a broader issue throughout Breaking Dawn, in which, even as Bella obtains all that she has desired, her sense of self begins to fracture. Breaking Dawn formalizes Bella’s union with Edward through a series of increasingly binding steps: first through legal marriage, then sexual intimacy and pregnancy, then through vampiric …
