Home Equity: Rethinking Race And Federal Housing Policy, Sarah E. Waldeck, Rachel D. Godsil
Home Equity: Rethinking Race And Federal Housing Policy, Sarah E. Waldeck, Rachel D. Godsil
Faculty Publications & Other Works
Neighborhoods shape every element of our lives. Where we live determines economic opportunities; our exposure to police and pollution; and the availability of positive amenities for a healthy life. Home inequity—both financial and racial—is not accidental. Federal government programs have armed white people with agency to construct “white” spaces while stigmatizing “Black” spaces. The urgency of addressing structural injustice in housing has been laid bare by police-involved shootings and the disparate death rates linked to COVID-19.
Using political philosopher Tommy Shelbie’s theory of corrective justice, this Article explores the historical and present-day harms that need to be rectified and then …

Addressing Hate: Georgia, The Irs, And The Ku Klux Klan, Samuel D. Brunson
Faculty Publications & Other Works
In 1944, the Ku Klux Klan officially suspended its operations. Two years later, it had entirely ended. In part this was the inevitable result of a decade of declining influence and membership. In part, though, it was the result of actions by the federal government and the state of Georgia. In 1916 the Ku Klux Klan incorporated as a Georgia fraternal organization, following a model of the Masons and other fraternal organizations. It also claimed to be a tax-exempt fraternal beneficiary society under the new federal income tax. These legal statuses provided the Klan with legal rights and benefits and …

The Lost History Of Delegation At The Founding, Christine Chabot
The Lost History Of Delegation At The Founding, Christine Chabot
Faculty Publications & Other Works
The new Supreme Court is poised to bring the administrative state to a grinding halt. Five Justices have endorsed Justice Gorsuch's dissent in Gundy v. United States--an opinion that threatens to invalidate countless regulatory statutes in which Congress has delegated significant policymaking authority to the Executive Branch. Justice Gorsuch claimed that the “text and history” of the Constitution required the Court to replace a longstanding constitutional doctrine that permits broad delegations with a more restrictive one. But the supposedly originalist arguments advanced by Justice Gorsuch and like-minded scholars run counter to the understandings of delegation that prevailed in the Founding …
A Reflection On Integration, Neil G. Williams
A Reflection On Integration, Neil G. Williams
Faculty Publications & Other Works
I wrote this essay in December 2019, shortly after attending the 2019 LatCrit Conference in Atlanta. I grew up in Atlanta during the heyday of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s into the early 1970s. Attending the 2019 LatCrit Conference brought back memories of my experiences as part of the earliest waves of black students sent to integrate Atlanta's historically all-white high schools. In the intervening years, too many elementary and high schools in America remain segregated (or, in many instances, only nominally integrated) as broad swaths of America have abandoned the commitment to ensuring that our young people …
Conquering Shame: The Growth Of Virginia Woolf’S Character In Moments Of Being, Ellie Windfeld-Hansen
Conquering Shame: The Growth Of Virginia Woolf’S Character In Moments Of Being, Ellie Windfeld-Hansen
Global Tides
This paper details the roles that shame, guilt, dread and humiliation play in Virginia Woolf's childhood and early adult life. It examines four key instances during these times in her life in which one or more of these feelings are present. Each of these instances also involves certain distinct family members. These experiences of Woolf's discussed in the paper and the family members with which she interacts strengthen her character and contribute to her unique perception and worldview.

Implementation Of An Individualized Onboarding And Training For Nurse Managers, Marcelo Castro
Implementation Of An Individualized Onboarding And Training For Nurse Managers, Marcelo Castro
DNP Scholarly Projects
Abstract
BACKGROUND: The onboarding and training of nurse managers varies drastically in healthcare institutions across the US, even within the same organization. Though evidence-based studies have demonstrated that the onboarding and training process are related to employee engagement, retention, and to the achievement of positive departmental and institutional goals and outcomes, most healthcare organizations do not invest in providing an effective onboarding and training based on evidence models and frameworks. This project was conducted at a 345-bed tertiary teaching medical center in the Boston area to determine the need for instituting an effective evidence-based onboarding and training process for nurse …
Disrupting Settler Stories: Learning To Live With Respect, Intimacy, And Reciprocity On Colonized Land, Anna S. Favour
Disrupting Settler Stories: Learning To Live With Respect, Intimacy, And Reciprocity On Colonized Land, Anna S. Favour
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
These essays and illustrations are informed by the question of how to form meaningful connection to place and care for a place when that land is colonized; when the creation of this place is rooted in harm. The purpose is to explore questions that have arisen during four years of Environmental Studies education. I want to learn what it means to be an environmentalist – to have a deep respect for the land and its inhabitants in a manner that extends beyond conservation – a relationship centered around respect, intimacy, and reciprocity. I want to understand if it’s possible to …
Assessment Of Sex Differences In Basic Renal Mitochondrial Bioenergetics, Morgan J. Spicer
Assessment Of Sex Differences In Basic Renal Mitochondrial Bioenergetics, Morgan J. Spicer
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Kidney diseases are closely linked with mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Furthermore, it is established that sex plays an important role in the onset, development and severity of renal diseases. Recently, it has been revealed that sex hormones are implicated in mitochondrial bioenergetics. Despite information accumulated regarding the role of mitochondria in renal disease states, little is known about the bioenergetics of renal mitochondria in normal physiology, and no studies looked at sex differences pre-disease onset. We hypothesized that there are sex-related differences in renal mitochondrial bioenergetics in young, healthy rats. To test this hypothesis, we utilized renal tissue …

The Uncertain Fate Of Asymmetrical Dispute Resolution Clauses In Arbitration Around The Globe: To Be Or Not To Be, Raluca Papadima
Scholarly Works
This article examines the validity and enforceability of asymmetrical dispute resolution clauses combining arbitration and litigation. Such clauses are currently favored by businesses in their search for a method of dispute resolution that provides a more favorable position for one of the parties to an agreement and ensures better enforcement against the assets of the counterparty.

The Cyan Decision And Its Impact On State-Level Securities Class Actions, B. John Torabi
The Cyan Decision And Its Impact On State-Level Securities Class Actions, B. John Torabi
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
The Supreme Court’s decision in Cyan, Inc. v. Beaver County Employees Retirement Fund† preserved the Securities Act of 1933’s bar on removing securities class actions brought in state court to federal court. The unanimous ruling cut against a nearly quarter-century long trend of pushing securities class action litigation to the federal courts. Cyan was resolved purely through statutory interpretation, leaving many of the underlying policy questions to be resolved by state courts and in future rulings.
This Note examines the intention of the drafters of the Securities Act of 1933 in designing a disclosure-focused regulatory scheme with a private …

Fixing Esg: Are Mandatory Esg Disclosures The Solution To Misleading Ratings?, Javier El-Hage
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
This Note provides an overview of the debate around the current state of ESG disclosure practices, and the perceived need for the SEC to establish a system of mandatory ESG disclosures. Part I explores the inherent difficulty of defining ESG, the problematic nature of quantifying and measuring ESG factors, and the tools currently being used by market-leading ratings firms and investment vehicles. In particular, this part addresses the inconsistencies of ESG self-reporting, the influence of this practice on the ensuing ratings, and the potential for investors to be misled as a result.
Part II of the Note explores the possible …
Child Abuse Reporting By Mandated Reporters In Schools, Kliche Adebanjo
Child Abuse Reporting By Mandated Reporters In Schools, Kliche Adebanjo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Child maltreatment has proven to be a mainstream issue in the United States, with millions of children being referred to state welfare systems for investigation or alternative response intervention. Research has identified mandated reporters as being responsible for reporting the majority of these cases. Amongst those identified as mandated reporters, education personnel refer the greatest number of children for suspicion of child abuse or neglect, partly because of their ongoing contact daily; however, many of the cases they report are unsubstantiated. Past research findings have concluded that mandated reporters in schools lacked proper child abuse training. The purpose of this …
Association Between Food Insecurity And Influenza Outcome In The United States., Sabrina Fiona Pink
Association Between Food Insecurity And Influenza Outcome In The United States., Sabrina Fiona Pink
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe influenza virus is one of the most commonly occurring respiratory viral infections in the world. The outer capsule of the virus contains 18H proteins and 11N proteins, which allows the virus to reform in over 100 different strands and outperform the vaccine. Despite efforts to improve access to care and reduce vaccine inequities; the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 9-45 million documented influenza-related illnesses, 140,000 to 810,000 hospitalization, and 64,000 deaths yearly. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether food insecurity, access to care and other social determinants of health such as age, race, and …

Integrative Genomics Implicates Disruption Of Prenatal Neurogenesis In Congenital Hydrocephalus, Shreyas Panchagnula
Integrative Genomics Implicates Disruption Of Prenatal Neurogenesis In Congenital Hydrocephalus, Shreyas Panchagnula
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Congenital Hydrocephalus (CH) affects 1/1000 live births and costs the US healthcare system over $2 billion annually. Mainstay therapies, hinging on surgical cerebrospinal fluid diversion, exhibit high failure rates and substantial morbidity. Limited understanding of pathogenesis warrants identification of crucial genetic drivers underlying CH and their impact on brain development. This pioneering study integrates gene discovery from the largest whole-exome sequenced CH cohort with transcriptional networks (modules) and cell-type markers from the latest transcriptomic atlases of the mid-gestational human brain to uncover the genomic and molecular architecture of CH. Exome analysis of 381 radiographically-confirmed, neurosurgically-treated sporadic CH probands (including 232 …
