Exploring The Impact Of Foot Overpronation On Gluteus Medius Activation In Recreational Runners: A Biomechanical Analysis, Austin D. Stroeh Aug 2025

Exploring The Impact Of Foot Overpronation On Gluteus Medius Activation In Recreational Runners: A Biomechanical Analysis, Austin D. Stroeh

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Pes planus foot type and gluteus medius (GMed) dysfunction are independently considered risk factors in developing several overuse running-related injuries because they propagate kinematic and kinetic changes in the leg during the gait cycle. While both produce similar kinesiological actions, research on the relationship between foot type and GMed activation in running is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between pes planus and pes rectus foot types and their association with GMed activity during running gait in recreational endurance runners. 47 recreational endurance-based runners running approximately 5-15 miles weekly for at least 6 months with …

Plankton monitoring datasets help inform indicators for marine biodiversity assessments under the European Union Marine Strategy Framework Directive and United Kingdom Marine Strategy. These indicators are used to assess long-term changes in the state of the pelagic habitats of the Northeast Atlantic which then guide policy formation and implementation to achieve Good Environmental Status. Across all ecosystems, environmental change has the potential to impact upon human wellbeing by changing the quantity and quality of ecosystem services. Here, we develop a socio-ecological assessment model that can describe how variations in pelagic habitat state, evidenced by plankton indicators, can impact human wellbeing. …

Glycopeptide, polymyxin, and aminoglycoside antibiotics are among the most commonly used agents to treat drug-resistant bacterial infections; however, their clinical use is hindered by nephrotoxicity. We previously reported that zileuton has the potential to attenuate antibiotic-associated nephrotoxicity in an animal model. Here, we further report the development of a parenteral formulation and exploration of dosing strategies for zileuton. The solubility, stability, and multi-dose safety of two zileuton formulations were evaluated. Zileuton serum and renal tissue pharmacokinetics were evaluated after a single dose and compared to steady state after 10 days. Different dosing strategies of zileuton to attenuate vancomycin-, polymyxin B-, …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has demonstrated its transformative impact in creating learning models, processing extensive datasets, and executing intricate calculations rapidly. Nevertheless, achieving optimal performance with AI models demands substantial investment in powerful and expensive high-end hardware. The learning models running on the hardware are complex, requiring massive data and huge training time. However, the race to achieve higher accuracy and computational limitations of AI further poses a threat to the environment and thus provides motivation to develop AI technology that is cost-effective, scalable, and suitable for resource-constrained environments, Frugal Artificial Intelligence, or Frugal AI. The objective of this paper is …

Antifungal Peptides From Casein Milk Of Etawa Crossbreed (Capra Hircus) As Biopreservation Agent For Bread And Molecular Docking Studies, Dian Riana Ningsih, Winarto Haryadi, Rachma Wikandari, Tri Joko Raharjo

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Bread without peptide fraction treatment started to grow mold on the fourth day with a total of 24x107 fungi colonies/ml. Meanwhile, the addition of peptide fractions GMC5, GMC6, GMC7, and GMC8 effectively preserved bread for up to 4 days, indicated by no mold growth. The best treatment was the GMC6 peptide fraction on day 8 which grew the least amount of fungus at 7x107 spores/ml. Peptide interaction with the CaATPase receptor Aspergillus sp. was carried out using HADDOCK 2.4. The 3D CaATPase structure prediction resulted in a model with good structural quality. This was supported by residues in …

Dopaminergic Neurons In The Zebrafish Subpallium Belong To The Extended Medial Amygdala, Daniel Armbruster, Thomas Mueller, Wolfgang Driever Aug 2025

Dopaminergic Neurons In The Zebrafish Subpallium Belong To The Extended Medial Amygdala, Daniel Armbruster, Thomas Mueller, Wolfgang Driever

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The amygdala is a heterogeneous, multinuclear telencephalic structure critical for motivated and emotion-related behaviors in vertebrates. In ray-finned fish (Actinopterygii) like the teleost zebrafish, a telencephalic outward-growing process called eversion makes defining amygdaloid territories particularly challenging. Teleosts are also peculiar in that they develop numerous dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the subpallium, while in tetrapods, such populations are less prominent or appear only transiently. To shed light on the organization of the amygdala in teleosts, we pursued an evolutionary developmental approach focusing on the topological origin of subpallial DA neurons. Specifically, we analyzed the distribution of tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) in conjunction …

Examining The Active Ingredients In An Anti-Stigma Intervention For Individuals With A Criminal History, Kaylee Cook Aug 2025

Examining The Active Ingredients In An Anti-Stigma Intervention For Individuals With A Criminal History, Kaylee Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Obtaining employment is key to successful reintegration for people who have been incarcerated. However, employers are often hesitant to hire formerly incarcerated persons due to general negative attitudes toward them and concern that they will not exhibit positive work behaviors. Interventions to reduce general types of stigma exist, with primary strategies involving education and/or contact. Most research examining the effectiveness of stigma-reducing strategies largely focus on reducing identity-based stigma (e.g., race, mental illness), with limited research on reducing choice-based stigma, such as those with criminal histories. However, regardless of targeted stigma, there is no consensus regarding which intervention format (i.e., …

Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease In People With Type 1 Diabetes., Brynlee Vermillion, Yuanjie Mao

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is increasingly recognized as a significant comorbidity in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D), despite its historical association with type 2 diabetes. This review focuses on summarizing current findings regarding the role of insulin resistance in the development of MASLD in T1D, as well as examining the relationship between MASLD and diabetes-related complications. We will also briefly discuss the prevalence, diagnostic challenges, associated complications, and potential mechanisms underlying MASLD in T1D. Although insulin resistance is well established in MASLD among those with type 2 diabetes, its role in T1D requires further clarification. Emerging markers, …

The Benefits Of High Phosphate Concentration (10n : 1p) And Diagonal Orientation On The Ex Situ Grow-Out Of Caribbean Coral Juveniles, Ashley Shen Aug 2025

The Benefits Of High Phosphate Concentration (10n : 1p) And Diagonal Orientation On The Ex Situ Grow-Out Of Caribbean Coral Juveniles, Ashley Shen

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

As coral reefs keep declining, it is imperative to increase coral production ex situ for restoration, but this requires culture protocols to be optimized. This study examined the impacts of grow-out orientation and phosphate concentration (and nitrate (N): phosphate (P) ratio) on the survival and growth of Montastraea cavernosa and Pseudodiploria clivosa juveniles from 3 to 9 months old. Pristine reefs typically have low nitrate (0.12μmol/L) and low phosphate (0.03μmol/L) concentrations, leading to N:P ratios of 4-16 N: 1P. In recirculating tanks, it is difficult to lower nitrate concentrations below 25μmol/L. Here we hypothesized that increasing the phosphate concentration in …

Acoustic Presence Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) In U.S. West Coast National Marine Sanctuaries, John C. Barkowski Aug 2025

Acoustic Presence Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) In U.S. West Coast National Marine Sanctuaries, John C. Barkowski

Master's Theses

Humpback whales are one of many species of marine mammal that utilize sound in multiple aspects of their lives in the oceans. By collecting acoustic data from multiple areas across the habitat of these animals, we can investigate spatiotemporal patterns in their sound production to better understand their life history strategy. This study uses three years of passive acoustic data collected concurrently from three U.S. West Coast National Marine Sanctuaries to look for spatiotemporal patterns in humpback whale song and non-song vocalizations. Additionally, this study investigated correlations between upwelling conditions and the onset of song to explore links between the …

Exploring Soil-Derived Antimicrobials For Inhibiting Dairy-Associated Pathogens And Spoilage Bacteria, Michael Joseph Moran Aug 2025

Exploring Soil-Derived Antimicrobials For Inhibiting Dairy-Associated Pathogens And Spoilage Bacteria, Michael Joseph Moran

Theses and Dissertations

Spore-forming bacteria are among the most problematic contaminants in fluid milk. They can survive pasteurization, grow at refrigeration temperatures, and secrete heat-stable enzymes, making them a major cause of spoilage in both pasteurized and reconstituted milk products. Current nonthermal strategies for reducing spore counts, including microfiltration and bactofugation, are often costly and inconsistent. The increasing consumer demand for natural additives in food products has sparked interest in the use of bacterially-derived antimicrobial compounds, particularly those from generally recognized as safe (GRAS) organisms, as an alternative method of dairy preservation. This study explores the antimicrobial potential of ten soil-derived Bacillus and …

Optimizing Coral Sexual Propagation Ex Situ: Synergistic Effects Of Multiple Cues On The Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Chloe Daniel Aug 2025

Optimizing Coral Sexual Propagation Ex Situ: Synergistic Effects Of Multiple Cues On The Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Chloe Daniel

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

For coral restoration to be effective at an ecosystem scale, ex situ coral propagation needs to be optimized and cost-effective. One of the major bottlenecks to sexual propagation of Caribbean corals ex situ is low larval settlement, typically induced by the presence of crustose coralline algae (CCA) and microbial films. Previous studies found that coral larval settlement can be enhanced by colored substrates, healthy reef sounds, and the presence of food. This study assessed the potential synergistic effects of colored substrate, reef sounds, and food, along with the commonly used settlement cues (CCA and microbial films) on the larval settlement …

Three Positively Charged Binding Sites On The Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus E2 Glycoprotein Coordinate Heparan Sulfate- And Protein Receptor-Dependent Infection, Maria D H Alcorn, Chengqun Sun, Theron C Gilliland Jr, Tetyana Lukash, Christine M Crasto, Saravanan Raju, Michael S Diamond, Scott C Weaver, William B Klimstra

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Naturally circulating strains of eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) bind heparan sulfate (HS) receptors and this interaction has been linked to neurovirulence. Previous studies associated EEEV-HS interactions with three positively charged amino acid clusters on the E2 glycoprotein. One of these sites has recently been reported to be critical for binding EEEV to the very-low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR), an EEEV receptor protein. The proteins apolipoprotein E receptor 2 (ApoER2) isoforms 1 and 2, and LDLR have also been shown to function as EEEV receptors. Herein, we investigate the individual contribution of each HS interaction site to EEEV HS- and protein …

Robert Britton, Charles Crundwell, Peter Davies, Jamie R. Dodd, Chris Grzesiok, Andrew D. Nunn, Randolph Velterop, Jonathan D. Bolland

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Anthropogenic in-river structures represent barriers to migrating fishes. Fish pass designs usually focus on passing anadromous salmonids, and fish pass studies usually focus on site-scale metrics, failing to consider the wider effects. Weir passage metrics and spawning distributions of anadromous iteroparous twaite shad Alosa fallax and semelparous sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus were assessed using acoustic telemetry between 2018 and 2023, within a catchment-scale reconnection programme on the River Severn (‘Unlocking the Severn’ [UtS]). Reconnection was by fish pass installation (Severn mainstem; 3 deep-vertical slot (DVS), 1 column bypass) and weir modification (Teme tributary; 1 partial removal/reduced head height, 1 reduced …

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders exhibit highly penetrant sleep and circadian dysfunction, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. We asked whether a subset of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders might have genetic variants in genes known to drive circadian rhythms. Through international collaboration, we identified ten individuals with very rare genetic variants in BMAL1, a core component of the molecular clock. These individuals exhibited overlapping signs and symptoms including developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, and variably penetrant marfanoid features. We functionally tested the identified BMAL1 variants in cell culture and in vivo and found disrupted BMAL1 function. These findings demonstrate that …

The development of non-hormonal male contraceptives requires validated preclinical models. This study investigated whether human orthologs of two mouse testis-specific serine proteases, PRSS55 and TMPRSS12, both essential for male fertility in mice, could functionally rescue the infertility phenotypes of their respective knockout mouse lines. We generated transgenic mouse lines expressing human PRSS55 with either an extracellularly or intracellularly positioned C-terminal 3xFLAG tag (RES GPI or RES TM), and a line expressing human TMPRSS12 with a C-terminal 3xFLAG tag (T12 RES), all on their respective mouse null backgrounds. Fertility was assessed through continuous mating trials, and sperm parameters were evaluated. Both …
