Workspace And Kinematic Modeling And Analysis Of Semi-Robotic Laparoscopic Surgery, Immanuel E. Girgis Jan 2021

Workspace And Kinematic Modeling And Analysis Of Semi-Robotic Laparoscopic Surgery, Immanuel E. Girgis

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Laparoscopic Surgery has been revolutionized by the world of Surgical Robotics. Robot-Assisted Surgeries have been proven to have many advantages over the fundamental, traditional "by-hand" procedures previously conducted, and still currently being done for certain operations. Robot-assisted surgery may offer benefits to patients through the use of minimally invasive techniques, which may result in reduced blood loss, reduced blood transfusion, fewer complications, reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and reduced recovery times (Ho et al., 2011). Studies have proven that robotic surgery may lead to patients recovering faster depending on the timeframe and the type of procedure (Tang et al., …

Using Genetics In A Model Organism To Understand Polyamine Transport, Victoria A. Millington Jan 2021

Using Genetics In A Model Organism To Understand Polyamine Transport, Victoria A. Millington

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Polyamines are small positively charged molecules that control major vital cellular processes including cell growth and proliferation, gene expression, protein production and cell death. Cells can obtain polyamines by making them (biosynthesis) or bringing them into the cell from the outside (transport). Cancer cells require high levels of polyamines to sustain their rapid growth, and depletion of polyamines slows the growth of malignant cells. An FDA approved drug, difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), blocks biosynthesis but is often ineffective because tumor cells respond by increasing transport of polyamines. Thus, a dual therapy that simultaneously targets polyamine biosynthesis and transport is needed. The mechanism …

This new set of features, which was mapped by volunteers of the Proyecto Sistemas Informaticas Geograficas y Arqueologicas del Beni (ProSIGAB) was purported to be a network of fish weirs, linear earthworks built in rivers or floodplains that are designed to trap fish by exploiting seasonal …

A Right To A Pollution-Free Environment Through The Right To Life, Natalie S. Mousa Jan 2021

A Right To A Pollution-Free Environment Through The Right To Life, Natalie S. Mousa

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Since humans have existed on Earth, the environment has been one of the primary resources contributing to humans' ability to live life adequately. Pollution has not only destroyed natural life, but it has also diminished humans' right to life. The United Nations 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) guarantees "every human being has the inherent right to life," but how can one exercise this right in an environment that is degrading through pollution? This is the basis of which this thesis is surrounded; the issue of environmental pollution hindering humans' right to life. Thus, this thesis …

Disease And Democracy: Understanding The Impact Of Disease Burden On Civil Liberties And Civil Society In Sub-Saharan Africa, Abigail E. Reynolds Jan 2021

Disease And Democracy: Understanding The Impact Of Disease Burden On Civil Liberties And Civil Society In Sub-Saharan Africa, Abigail E. Reynolds

Honors Undergraduate Theses

What is the impact of disease burden on democracy in sub-Saharan Africa? Despite increasing interest in the implications of health crises for state stability, there has been a dearth of literature exploring the relationship between disease burden more generally and democracy specifically. This thesis takes a comprehensive approach to bridge this gap in the literature. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, it draws on data from the Global Burden of Disease database and the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) dataset to analyze this relationship. The diseases studied are categorized as long-wave (e.g., HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis), short-wave (e.g., Ebola and lower respiratory infections), …

Phototransduction Components In The Visual System Of Hard-Bodied Ticks, Arimar J. López Limas Jan 2021

Phototransduction Components In The Visual System Of Hard-Bodied Ticks, Arimar J. López Limas

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Ticks are terrestrial invertebrate parasites that attach to their hosts to feed on their blood. Ticks are composed of three families: Ixodidae, Argasidae, and Nuttalliellidae. Ixodid ticks include members of the genera Amblyomma, Ixodes, Haemaphysalis, Hyalomma, Dermacentor, and Rhipicephalus. Ticks can transmit diseases to animals and humans, making them an important organism to study. Current tick-bite mitigation strategies include acaricides (harmful if misused), and CO2 traps (effective in decreasing tick abundance, but costly to use). Since the visual system of ticks has not been studied extensively, I expect that by studying their visual system, alternative tick-bite mitigation …

Chinese Paradox : Where Are Chinese Monuments?, Alberto Castelli Jan 2021

Chinese Paradox : Where Are Chinese Monuments?, Alberto Castelli

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The bareness of the Chinese monumental landscape is the result of various factors, the analysis of which deserves an inquiry into Chinese modus vivendi. Daoist imprimatur and its recognition of nature’s superiority is but one. Buddhist sectarianism, Chinese fluid conception of time, Chinese iconoclasm, are phenomena that, largely, have concurred on creating a periodic tabula rasa of cultural heritage. Making sense of this is simply to recognize that artistic representations are not only metaphors for understanding social dynamics, but also a magnifying glass on the relation between people and their past.

Brain Interhemispheric Alterations In Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Using Structural Neuroimaging Features, Cintya Dutta Jan 2021

Brain Interhemispheric Alterations In Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Using Structural Neuroimaging Features, Cintya Dutta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This dissertation examines brain lateralization and interhemispheric asymmetry patterns found in youths with Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Prior research groups have found mixed findings with respect to left and right hemisphere alterations from ADHD subjects using structural magnetic resonance imaging. In these investigations, we propose the use of Asymmetry Index (AI), a subject-specific metric that quantifies the extent of brain asymmetry and allows each subject to serve as their own control, thus reducing variability when pooling across different sites. We compare AI metric with laterality across volumetric, surface area, thickness, morphology, and white matter measures in order to characterize …

The Impact Of Misspecification Of Within-Person Autocorrelated Covariance Structure On Nonlinear Latent Growth Curve Models: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study, Mingming Zhou Jan 2021

The Impact Of Misspecification Of Within-Person Autocorrelated Covariance Structure On Nonlinear Latent Growth Curve Models: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study, Mingming Zhou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of misspecification (i.e., under-specification, over-specification, and general misspecification) of the within-person level errors in longitudinal data under quadratic, exponential, and logistic latent growth curve models and to make a contribution to the literature in this area. A Monte Carlo simulation in R uncovered a common bias pattern throughout this study. For under-specification of autocorrelated processes and general misspecification of MA as AR, the mean intercept was more likely to be downward- biased, but the linear slope and nonlinear slope for an individual tend to be upward-biased. On average, the variation …

Downregulation Of Mir-34a Via Calorie Restriction Regulates Lipid Metabolism In The Liver Of Long-Living Ames Dwarf Mice, Sarah Ashiqueali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Ames dwarf mice (df/df) display delayed aging relative to their normal siblings, living approximately 40-60% longer. As such, investigating the mechanisms that enable these organisms to have superior life expectancies may prove useful in developing therapies to slow aging and deter age-related disease. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition that is characterized by the accumulation of excess adipose tissue in the liver. Interestingly, its prevalence tends to increase with age with an incidence rate of greater than 40% in individuals over the age of 60. Previous studies highlight the potential of calorie restriction (CR) in promoting longevity, but …

The Effect Of Dynamic Span Wise Bending On The Forces Of A Pitching Flat Plate, Manoj Prabakar Sargunaraj Jan 2021

The Effect Of Dynamic Span Wise Bending On The Forces Of A Pitching Flat Plate, Manoj Prabakar Sargunaraj

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

A novel experiment has been conducted to investigate the effect of dynamic spanwise bending on the formation of a dynamic stall vortex on a rapidly pitching flat plate. Experiments have been performed in a towing tank at different nondimensional pitch rates (Kp) in the range of 0.4112 < Kp < 0.8225, and four maximum pitch angles (30° , 45°, 60°, and 90°) at a Reynolds number of 12,000. Synchronized direct force measurements and particle image velocimetry (PIV) are used to characterize the effect of bending on the unsteady forces and the flow field. An unsteady analytical model based on the bending and pitching kinematics is used to model the lift force histories. It is found that a spanwise bending of a pitching wing alleviated the unsteady lift forces. However, the main contribution was found to come from the non-circulatory forces. The circulation and pressure analysis of the pitching wing revealed little or no sensitivity to the wing bending motions examined.

A Holistic Approach For Power Systems Using Machine Learning And System Dynamics, Bibi Ibrahim Jan 2021

A Holistic Approach For Power Systems Using Machine Learning And System Dynamics, Bibi Ibrahim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The growing digital economy has imposed greater demand on the electricity supply's reliability in the past decades, with more consumers and electric vehicles (EV) becoming connected to the electric grid. While the uncertainty of the outcomes is unavoidable, there is a need for more accurate forecasts, modeling tools, and detailed roadmaps that can support the reliable transitioning of power systems. Predicting the electricity demand growth will allow energy managers to understand consumer demand in the near future better. However, there are challenges for forecasting the peak demand growth since it is very difficult to model the various complex features that …

Influence Of Geography On The Healthy Gut Microbiome And The Role Of The Gut Microbiome In Ibd Symptom And Disease Progression, Sayf Al-Deen Hassouneh Jan 2021

Influence Of Geography On The Healthy Gut Microbiome And The Role Of The Gut Microbiome In Ibd Symptom And Disease Progression, Sayf Al-Deen Hassouneh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The human gut microbiome is believed to play an integral role in host health and disease. In a microbial community, associations between constituent members play an important role in determining the overall structure and function of the community. To understand the nature of bacterial associations at the species level in healthy human gut microbiomes, we analyzed previously published collections of whole-genome shotgun sequence data, from fecal samples obtained from four different healthy human populations. Using a Random Forest Classifier, we identified bacterial species that were prevalent in these populations and whose relative abundances could be used to accurately distinguish between …

Genomic And Physiological Bioremediation Characteristics Of The Actinobacteria Frankia, Erik Swanson Jan 2021

Genomic And Physiological Bioremediation Characteristics Of The Actinobacteria Frankia, Erik Swanson

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Frankia is a genus of symbiotic, nitrogen fixing actinobacteria found in the soil and root tissue of actinorhizal plants throughout the world. Both Frankia and actinorhizal plants are resistant to a wide range of environmental and chemical stresses including heavy metals, high salinity, and drought. This makes Frankia and the actinorhizal symbiosis an interesting candidate for bioremediation applications. However, the microbial community found in the actinorhizal rhizosphere and surrounding soil has been implicated in some of the symbiotic and resistance traits attributed to Frankia. This necessitates thorough investigation of the genomic and genetic components of any bioremediation traits possessed …

The Ideal International Student: Intersections Of Race, Gender, And Accent In International Multilingual Student Identity, Kristin Raymond

Doctoral Dissertations

Perceptions of international multilingual students from the university community have a significant impact on those students’ identities and status on campus. These perceptions construct narratives of the ideal international multilingual student, which is defined by an optimal set of student characteristics that appear to be divorced from factors of race, gender, and accent. This dissertation examines the concept of the ideal international multilingual student in intersection with factors of race, gender, and accent. This qualitative, IRB-approved study draws from the model of investment (Norton 2000, 2013; Darvin & Norton, 2015; De Costa & Norton, 2017) and the concept of racialization …

Synthesis Of Thioacids And Dicarboxylic Acids Derived From Open Β-Lactams For Inhibition Of Metallo-Β-Lactamases, Junfu Chen Jan 2021

Synthesis Of Thioacids And Dicarboxylic Acids Derived From Open Β-Lactams For Inhibition Of Metallo-Β-Lactamases, Junfu Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

Antibiotics are important substances that have been used in clinical treatment for over 70 years. Because of overuse and misuse of antibiotics, bacteria developed resistance. However, bacterial resistance towards antibiotics, especially the β-lactam antibiotics, is becoming increasingly threat. Currently, the β-lactam antibiotics are seriously threatened by β-lactamases. Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs), a sub-class of β-lactamases, have been found in several bacteria since they confer resistance to many different β-lactams, and as a result, the bacteria survive in their presence. A potential treatment is to synthesize inhibitors of MBLs, however, there are no inhibitors synthesized in clinical use. The goal of this project …

The Effect Of Deep-Water Multibeam Mapping Activity On The Foraging Behavior Of Cuvier’S Beaked Whales And The Marine Acoustic Environment, Hilary Suzanne Curran Kates Varghese Jan 2021

The Effect Of Deep-Water Multibeam Mapping Activity On The Foraging Behavior Of Cuvier’S Beaked Whales And The Marine Acoustic Environment, Hilary Suzanne Curran Kates Varghese

Doctoral Dissertations

Sound can propagate great distances underwater and is an important mode for marine life to obtain information. Human activities in the ocean such as global shipping, coastal construction, gas and oil exploration, and mapping navigation routes intentionally and unintentionally emit sound into the ocean, potentially interacting with marine life. Therefore, it is essential that the effects of anthropogenic noise on marine life and the ambient marine acoustic environment be understood. Most of the work, to date, has focused on the impact of low-frequency (<1 kHz) sources such as shipping noise, which is ubiquitous in the ocean, and mid-frequency (1-10 kHz) sources such as naval sonar, to which many marine mammals have shown to be sensitive. The effect of these sources can be as salient as a mass stranding event or as benign as an animal swimming away from a source of noise with no other effect. Less work has focused on higher frequency sources (>10 kHz), including ocean-mapping sonar systems. However, most marine mammals, namely toothed whales (odontocetes), are capable …

Naturally Occurring Rock Type Influences The Settlement Of Fucus Spiralis L. Zygotes, William G. Ambrose, Paul E. Renaud, David C. Adler, Robert L. Vadas Jan 2021

Naturally Occurring Rock Type Influences The Settlement Of Fucus Spiralis L. Zygotes, William G. Ambrose, Paul E. Renaud, David C. Adler, Robert L. Vadas

Marine Science

The settlement of spores and larvae on hard substrates has been shown to be influenced by many factors, but few studies have evaluated how underlying bedrock may influence recruitment. The characteristics of coastal rock types such as color, heat capacity, mineral size, and free energy have all been implicated in settlement success. We examined the influence of naturally occurring rock types on the initial attachment of zygotes of the brown alga Fucus spiralis Linnaeus 1753. We also assessed the dislodgment of zygotes on four bedrock types after initial attachment in laboratory experiments using wave tanks. Settling plates were prepared from …

Patient-Derived Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Models For Phenotypic Screening In The Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses, Ahmed Morsy, Angelica V. Carmona, Paul C. Trippier Jan 2021

Patient-Derived Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Models For Phenotypic Screening In The Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses, Ahmed Morsy, Angelica V. Carmona, Paul C. Trippier

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Batten disease or neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a group of rare, fatal, inherited neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorders. Numerous genes (CLN1-CLN8, CLN10-CLN14) were identified in which mutations can lead to NCL; however, the underlying pathophysiology remains elusive. Despite this, the NCLs share some of the same features and symptoms but vary in respect to severity and onset of symptoms by age. Some common symptoms include the progressive loss of vision, mental and motor deterioration, epileptic seizures, premature death, and in the rare adult-onset, dementia. Currently, all forms of NCL are fatal, and no curative treatments are available. Induced pluripotent stem …
