Stem cell-derived, organotypic in vitro models, known as organoids, have emerged as superior alternatives to traditional cell culture models due to their unparalleled ability to recreate complex physiological and pathophysiological processes. For this reason, they are attractive targets of tissue-engineering efforts, as constructs that include organoid technology would be expected to better simulate the many functions of the desired tissue or organ. While the 3D spheroidal architecture that is the default architecture of most organoid models may be preferred for some applications, 2D monolayer arrangements remain the preferred organization for many applications in tissue engineering. Therefore, in this work, we …
Helicobacter Pylori Diagnosis And Therapy In The Era Of Antimicrobial Stewardship, Akiko Shiotani, Priya Roy, Hong Lu, David Y Graham
Helicobacter Pylori Diagnosis And Therapy In The Era Of Antimicrobial Stewardship, Akiko Shiotani, Priya Roy, Hong Lu, David Y Graham
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The diagnosis and therapy of Helicobacter pylori infection have undergone major changes based on the use the principles of antimicrobial stewardship and increased availability of susceptibility profiling. H. pylori gastritis now recognized as an infectious disease, as such there is no placebo response allowing outcome to be assessed in relation to the theoretically obtainable cure rate of 100%. The recent recognition of H. pylori as an infectious disease has changed the focus to therapies optimized to reliably achieve high cure rates. Increasing antimicrobial resistance has also led to restriction of clarithromycin, levofloxacin, or metronidazole to susceptibility-based therapies. Covid-19 resulted in …

Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy is a leading cause of epilepsy-related mortality, and the analysis of mouse Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy models is steadily revealing a spectrum of inherited risk phenotypes based on distinct genetic mechanisms. Serotonin (5-HT) signalling enhances post-ictal cardiorespiratory drive and, when elevated in the brain, reduces death following evoked audiogenic brainstem seizures in inbred mouse models. However, no gene in this pathway has yet been linked to a spontaneous epilepsy phenotype, the defining criterion of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy. Most monogenic models of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy invoke a failure of inhibitory synaptic …
The Uncanny Swipe Drive: The Return Of A Racist Mode Of Algorithmic Thought On Dating Apps, Gregory Narr
The Uncanny Swipe Drive: The Return Of A Racist Mode Of Algorithmic Thought On Dating Apps, Gregory Narr
Publications and Research
As algorithmic media amplify longstanding social oppression, they also seek to colonize every last bit of sociality where that oppression could be resisted. Swipe apps constitute prototypical examples of this dynamic. By employing protocols that foster absent-minded engagement, they allow unconscious racial preferences to be expressed without troubling users’ perceptions of themselves as non-racist. These preferences are then measured by recommender systems that treat “attractiveness” as a zero-sum game, allocate affective flows according to the winners and losers of those games, and ultimately amplify the salience of race as a factor of success for finding intimacy. In thus priming users …
The Use Of Land Management Practices To Reclaim Brine-Affected Cropland Soils And Restore Shrub Invaded Rangeland, Dylan John Bartels
The Use Of Land Management Practices To Reclaim Brine-Affected Cropland Soils And Restore Shrub Invaded Rangeland, Dylan John Bartels
Range Science
Land management techniques can enhance altered ecosystems on a variety of landscapes. In the Williston Basin of North Dakota, brine ponds created 50 years ago still cause problems today. We applied six treatments to reclaim the A-horizon of brine-affected soil on six legacy brine ponds and monitored soil nutrients until 23 months after treatment. We found that from 0-15 cm, all treatments were significantly better at reducing electrical conductivity than the control. In addition, sodium adsorption ratio was reduced at all depths over time. In Southcentral North Dakota, we monitored the effects of fire and grazing on colonies of western …
Impacts Of Invasive Plant Species On The Plant Community In The Northern Great Plains, Rachel Hope Ouren
Impacts Of Invasive Plant Species On The Plant Community In The Northern Great Plains, Rachel Hope Ouren
Range Science
Invasive species are encroaching rangelands in the U.S. and altering community composition and plant diversity. In the Northern Great Plains, exotic cool-season perennial grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pratensis; crested wheatgrass, Agropyron cristatum; smooth brome, Bromus inermis) have invaded rangelands with their ecological impacts less understood. This study analyzed a long-term (13-year) and landscape-scale dataset to identify potential impacts on site richness, diversity, community composition shifts, and species tolerant of invasion by Kentucky bluegrass, crested wheatgrass, and smooth brome. We found these three invaders cumulatively are associated with decreased site richness, maximum richness, and site diversity, especially native forb diversity. Clayey …

The Stroop effect describes interference in cognitive processing due to competing cognitive demands. Presenting emotionally laden stimuli creates similar Stroop-like effects that result from participants’ attention being drawn to distractor stimuli. Here, we adapted the methods of a pictorial Stroop study for use with chimpanzees (N = 6), gorillas (N = 7), and Japanese macaques (N = 6). We tested all subjects via touchscreens following the same protocol. Ten of the 19 subjects passed pre-test training. Subjects who reached criterion were then tested on a standard color-interference Stroop test, which revealed differential accuracy in the primates’ responses across conditions. Next, …

The mechanisms underlying retinal development have not been completely elucidated. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are novel essential mediators of cell‑to‑cell communication with emerging roles in developmental processes. Nevertheless, the identification of EVs in human retinal tissue, characterization of their cargo, and analysis of their potential role in retina development has not been accomplished. Three‑dimensional retinal tissue derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) provide an ideal developmental system to achieve this goal. Here we report that hiPSC‑derived retinal organoids release exosomes and microvesicles with small noncoding RNA cargo. EV miRNA cargo‑predicted targetome correlates with Gene Ontology (GO) pathways involved in …
Optimization Of Coverage Ratios For Basis And Freight Trading Portfolios, Adam Joseph Kroll
Optimization Of Coverage Ratios For Basis And Freight Trading Portfolios, Adam Joseph Kroll
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Changing commodity prices create opportunities for traders to profit or experience substantial losses if risk is not managed. Extensive research has been presented regarding optimal hedging strategies using futures markets to mitigate price risk of holding a physical commodity, but the literature has not introduced a method for optimizing basis or rail coverage ratios. This study introduces coverage ratios to manage basis and transportation risk. Coverage ratios are optimized for a portfolio of basis and rail positions consistent with expected utility theory using Monte Carlo simulation at various risk aversion levels. The results indicated that as risk aversion increased, optimal …
Examining Integration, Efficiency And Technical Change In Chinese Pork Production, Yongxia Tian
Examining Integration, Efficiency And Technical Change In Chinese Pork Production, Yongxia Tian
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Pork has been the main protein source for the Chinese millennia. Though China is the largest pork producer in the world, multiple challenges hinder development of pork production and hence demand are difficult to satisfy. Due to national food security strategy, imported pork may only play a minor role. Objective of this research is examining current production efficiency and technological progress in Chinese pork production and discuss comprehensive supply chain integration. This study presents theoretical analysis regarding consumer benefits and how they could be improved. Additionally, efficiency analysis is conducted across three hog production scales with results showing large-scale hog …
The United States And Brazil - Spatial And Logistical Interdependence For Soybean Shipments To China, Gwen Marie Scheresky
The United States And Brazil - Spatial And Logistical Interdependence For Soybean Shipments To China, Gwen Marie Scheresky
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Analyzing the United States/Brazil competition for market share of Chinese soybean imports requires a detailed, stochastic approach. Using data from 2013 to 2019, this thesis attempts to model and explain the change in market share for each producing country as different variables fluctuate or enter the equation. Using five origins in each country, the PNW, USG, Santos, Paranaguá, and the northern arc of ports in Brazil, various transportation routes from origin to port, congestion and quality metrics, and ocean freight, a least-cost optimized Monte Carlo simulation is performed using time-series forecasting distributions for monthly variables. A distribution of outcomes for …
Real Options For Agriculture Technology: A Venture Capital Valuation Approach, Lee Thomas Vetsch
Real Options For Agriculture Technology: A Venture Capital Valuation Approach, Lee Thomas Vetsch
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
For startups and young companies, there is significant uncertainty and managerial flexibility within a company’s business model, research and development (R&D) processes, and commercialization strategy. These characteristics make early stage companies difficult to value. While the predominant valuation tools used include discounted cash flow and multiples analysis, their fixed assumptions and improper risk adjustment tend to undervalue startups with managerial flexibility, uncertainty, and high growth potential. This thesis utilizes stochastic real options to assist with the valuation process for agricultural technology startups in order to better reflect uncertainty, managerial flexibility, and asymmetric growth that is existent. The stochastic real options …
Effect Of Contract Attribute Levels On Willingness To Participate In A Working Wetlands Program, Haley Coffield
Effect Of Contract Attribute Levels On Willingness To Participate In A Working Wetlands Program, Haley Coffield
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Wetlands are an integral part of duck habitat in the Prairie Pothole Region, which covers three Canadian provinces and five U.S. states. They often overlap with cropland, creating issues for farmers. A program that provided funding to farmers who agree to not alter wetlands and continue to farm the land was introduced in North Dakota called the Working Wetlands Program. After four years, participating farmers were surveyed. A choice experiment was used to investigate the effect of program contract attributes including payment, length, and whether the contract is binding, on willingness to enroll. A random parameters logit model was estimated. …
An Examination Of Limiting Factors Of Chrysemys Picta Bellii (Western Painted Turtles) In The Lower Willamette River Basin, Oregon, James P. Holley
An Examination Of Limiting Factors Of Chrysemys Picta Bellii (Western Painted Turtles) In The Lower Willamette River Basin, Oregon, James P. Holley
Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports
Oregon’s two native freshwater turtle species, Chrysemys picta bellii (Western painted turtle) and Actinemys marmorata (Northwestern pond turtle), have seen significantly reduced population sizes since the founding of Portland in 1845, with estimates of up to 90% for A. marmorata. This project examined turtle nesting activity at 25 sites across a range of turtle populations and habitats around the Lower Willamette River Basin. All discovered turtle nesting activity was found in areas of high solar exposure. We found 93% of over 400 nest attempts to have been depredated across the 25 sites, well above most other reported rates. At …
