Objective: We describe primary care providers' current practice patterns related to smoking cessation counseling and lung cancer screening (LCS). Methods: Family, internal medicine, and pulmonary medicine providers from two medical centers were asked to complete an electronic survey to report their practice patterns. Results: Of 52 participating providers, most reported initiating three major components of a smoking cessation intervention often or very often: advise to quit (50, 96%), assess willingness to quit (47, 90%), and assist with counseling or pharmacotherapy (49, 94%). However, other components were less commonly initiated such as arranging follow-ups (only 11 providers indicated recommending them often …
One-Dimensional Turbulence (Odt): Computationally Efficient Modeling And Simulation Of Turbulent Flows, Victoria B. Stephens, David O. Lignell
One-Dimensional Turbulence (Odt): Computationally Efficient Modeling And Simulation Of Turbulent Flows, Victoria B. Stephens, David O. Lignell
Faculty Publications
One-dimensional turbulence (ODT) is an accurate and computationally efficient model for simulating turbulent flows. ODT has been applied to a wide range of flow problems including reaction, multiphase, differential diffusion, heat release, buoyancy, and wall flows. Applications include use as a standalone model and as a closure for large-eddy simulation (LES). Its strength lies in the ability to capture a full range of turbulent length and time scales. The ODT model is strongly coupled with its implementation, complicating its formulations. We present a modern, open-source, object-oriented C++ implementation of ODT. The code described here and made available online can be …

Expanding The Concept Of Comprehensive Area Ratio Parameter To The South-Central States Towards Simplifying The Structural Evaluation Of Flexible Pavements At The Network Level, Nitish R. Bastola
Civil Engineering Theses
The surface deflection bowl data collected through Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) has been widely utilized by various Department of Transportation (DOTs) in the South-Central States and other places. The primary purpose of using deflection-based NDTs in network-level assessment is to identify a weak pavement section that requires further analysis at the project level. The falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test is one of the common NDT based tests utilized by highway agencies in assessing the performance of the flexible pavement. However, a robust method to evaluate pavement sections utilizing FWD data from all the sensors are seldom developed. There is always a …

Revisiting The Role Of Physicians In Assisted Living And Residential Care Settings, Sarah Dys, Lindsey Smith, Ozcan Tunalilar, Paula C. Carder
Institute on Aging Publications
As the United States population ages, a higher share of adults is likely to use long-term services and supports. This change increases physicians’ need for information about assisted living and residential care (AL/RC) settings, which provide supportive care and housing to older adults. Unlike skilled nursing facilities, states regulate AL/RC settings through varying licensure requirements enforced by state agencies, resulting in differences in the availability of medical and nursing services. Where some settings provide limited skilled nursing care, in others, residents rely on resident care coordinators, or their own physicians to oversee chronic conditions, medications, and treatments. The following narrative …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
Handoff is an essential element of cellular communication systems. Efficient handoff algorithms can be considered as a cost-effective way of enhancing the capacity and the quality of service (QoS) of cellular systems. In this paper, the performance of no priority schemes and first- in- first -out (FIFO) handoff queuing schemes are considered. The performance of signal power multimedia communications (SPMC) is studied for multimedia communications queuing over a shadow and ricean fading channel. Computer simulations are performed to calculate the probability of new call blocking (Pb) and probability of handoff dropping (Pd) using different types of handoff strategies. Results indicate …

Electro-Mechanical Modelling And Load Sway Control Of Gantry Cranes., F. Al-Fares, T. Al-Fiqi, H. Al-Mubarak, M. Al-Ajmi
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In this work, a nonlinear model representing the dynamics of the container sway of a gantry crane is derived. The dynamics of the induction motors are also taken into consideration in addition to the simultaneous travelling, trolley and housing motions. The data of an actual 45-ton gantry crane is used to simulate the behavior of the container under an actual transportation plan. A simulation example is then presented to illustrate the uncontrolled system response. The container sway is found to be high such that a control scheme has to be implemented to suppress the load sway. A feedback control scheme …

Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of Mandarin-Speaking Undergraduate Students In The United States, Enhao Wang
Master's Projects and Capstones
ABSTRACT
Studying in the United States is many Chinese students' dream, but those who manage to achieve it encounter two main problems. The first one is the language barrier and the second one cultural shock. Chine is the highest provider of international students with 30% from statistics of 2017/2018 class. The primary language spoken by Chinese is the Mandarin language. All the other languages come in as a second language to most Chinese, including English. When they travel out of their country to further education as students, they are hampered by language barriers as they navigate through their struggle.

Synthesis Of Structurally Diverse Molecular Scaffolds Enabled By Protected Oxyallyl Cations, Joshua Andrew Malone
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the synthesis of diverse molecular scaffolds through the use of protected oxyallyl cation intermediates. Chapter One provides background on the generation and applications of oxyallyl and silyloxyallyl cations, while focusing on the direct nucleophilic capture of theses intermediates to generate functionalized ketones and silylenolates. Chapter Two depicts our approach to generate six-membered silyloxyallyl cations through the use of mild Brønsted acid activation. Regioselective nucleophilic capture of these intermediates successfully produced diverse a,a’-substituted silylenol ethers enabled by polar solvent and residual water.
Chapter three details strategies to generate 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds, focusing on the capture of cationic intermediates …

A gastrocutaneous closure device allows gastrocutaneous fistula closure from external abdominal access through the fistula site. Access through the fistula ensures accurate closure placement on the interior lumen wall of the stomach. A closure or clip has a plurality of prongs defined by a deformable material, such that the prongs extend radially from a central hub in an arcuate or curved, semicircular shape. The arcuate shape converges towards a central point or axis at a distal end, and the proximate end of the prongs attaches to the central hub such that the prongs radiate from the hub and the distal …

Tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) causes serious crop losses worldwide and is transmitted by Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). NSs protein is the silencing suppressor of TSWV and plays an important role in virus infection, cycling, and transmission process. In this research, we investigated the influences of NSs protein on the interaction of TSWV, plants, and F. occidentalis with the transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana. Compared with the wild-type Col-0 plant, F. occidentalis showed an increased number and induced feeding behavior on transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana expressing exogenous NSs. Further analysis showed that NSs reduced the expression of terpenoids synthesis-related genes and …

Aquatic invasive species negatively impact the native aquatic communities in many parts of the world. Every nation faces the issue of introduced species, but the efforts to manage them depend on the varying capacity and willingness to manage invasions globally. Aquatic invasive species have their own set of challenges; it is crucial to understand the invasion dynamics of these species as well as their nature of interaction with humans to devise better mitigation processes. The freshwater aquatic wealth of India is seriously threatened by pollution, flow modification, overexploitation, habitat degradation and invasive alien species. India has several globally known freshwater …

Converting alkanes to other, more chemically and economically valuable molecules requires catalysts that can survive elevated temperatures and highly reducing environments. These environments can cause many metal-nanoparticle based catalysts to sinter rapidly, causing a loss of activity. They must also tolerate the coke formation, as well, since coke can restrict access to active sites by gas phase molecules, thus lowering catalytic activity. While there are routes to improve both the sinter and coke resistance of catalysts, an alternative strategy is to develop a protocol for regenerating the activity of the catalyst in question when coke formation or sintering becomes problematic. …
