Woman and Child Health

Background: Kyrgyzstan has made considerable progress in reducing child mortality compared with other countries in the region, despite a comparatively low economic standing. However, maternal mortality is still high. Given the availability of an established birth registration system, we aimed to comprehensively assess the trends and determinants of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health in Kyrgyzstan.
Methods: For this Countdown to 2030 country case study, we used publicly available data repositories and the national birth registry of Kyrgyzstan to examine trends and inequalities of reproductive, maternal, and newborn health and mortality between 1990 and 2018, at a national and subnational …

Emergency Department Workplace Violence Against Nurses, Adam Johnson Dec 2020

Emergency Department Workplace Violence Against Nurses, Adam Johnson

MSN Capstone Projects

Emergency room nurses are often thought of as the adrenaline junkies of the nursing world. Emergency nurses interact with a wide array of patients and visitors and are often the first clinician a patient may see upon arriving at an emergency department. With this wide array of patients and visitors, also comes a volatile environment with the increased risks of violence against nurses. This violence could include verbal, physical, and emotional violence from patients, visitors, and even fellow staff members. As violence increases, nursing longevity decreases and thus further increases the expense of nursing on a facility. Therefore, this has …

Improving Nurse Engagement Through Unit Practice Councils, Pavna Sloan Dec 2020

Improving Nurse Engagement Through Unit Practice Councils, Pavna Sloan

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Problem: According to the Advisory Board (2014), nurses are the least engaged group of healthcare employees. Healthcare organizations with a high percentage of disengaged nurses have increased nurse turnover rates and decreased patient satisfaction and safety scores (Kutney-Lee et al., 2016). Shared governance, in the form of unit practice councils (UPCs), is an underutilized model healthcare organizations can implement to increase nurse engagement.

Context: The UPC is an example of shared governance to engage and empower nurses to affect changes that impact their practice. This a multi-site health system with 21 medical centers in Northern California. This system would …

Berry phase is a powerful concept that unravels the nontrivial role of topology in phenomena observed in chiral magnetic materials and structures. A celebrated example is the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) driven by the nonvanishing Berry phase in momentum space. As the AHE is dependent on details of the band structure near the Fermi edge, the Berry phase and AHE can be altered in thin films whose chemical potential is tunable by dimensionality and disorder. Here, we demonstrate how Berry phase in ultrathin SrRuO3 films provides a comprehensive explanation for the nontrivial Hall response which is conventionally attributed to the …

2d-Att: Causal Inference For Mobile Game Organic Installs With 2-Dimensional Attentional Neural Network, Boxiang Dong, Hui Bill Li, Yang Ryan Wang, Rami Safadi Dec 2020

2d-Att: Causal Inference For Mobile Game Organic Installs With 2-Dimensional Attentional Neural Network, Boxiang Dong, Hui Bill Li, Yang Ryan Wang, Rami Safadi

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In the mobile gaming industry, organic installs refer to downloads that cannot be attributed to any advertising channel and thus do not introduce upfront user acquisition (UA) cost. Understanding the causal factors on organic installs is of vital importance for a game's ecosystem, as such knowledge can help bring in more organic users, who tend to be more loyal and active. A major challenge in discovering the causal effects is the potential temporal lag between an UA operation and the growth in organic installs. In this paper, we solve the problem by using a deep attentional neural network to analyze …

Item-Based Collaborative Filtering And Association Rules For A Baseline Recommender In E-Commerce, Jessica Lourenco, Aparna S. Varde Dec 2020

Item-Based Collaborative Filtering And Association Rules For A Baseline Recommender In E-Commerce, Jessica Lourenco, Aparna S. Varde

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In the ever-growing data-driven world today, data increases in many forms, e.g. e-commerce sites uploading new products, streaming services adding TV shows and movies, and music platforms uploading new songs. It would be highly infeasible for end users to quickly browse all this data. Hence recommender systems can benefit end users (individuals as well as companies) in efficiently finding suitable products. Rather than making end users search through a vast array of items, recommender systems can suggest suitable items to users based on popularity of the items and the respective users' buying behavior. Accordingly, in this paper we explore two …

Transfer Learning For Decision Support In Covid-19 Detection From A Few Images In Big Data, Divydharshini Karthikeyan, Aparna S. Varde, Weitian Wang

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has spread rapidly amongst countries all around the globe. Compared to the rise in cases, there are few Covid-19 testing kits available. Due to the lack of testing kits for the public, it is useful to implement an automated AI-based E-health decision support system as a potential alternative method for Covid-19 detection. As per medical examinations, the symptoms of Covid-19 could be somewhat analogous to those of pneumonia, though certainly not identical. Considering the enormous number of cases of Covid-19 and pneumonia, and the complexity of the related images stored, the data pertaining to this problem …

Effective Ell Instruction And The Siop Model: A Comparative Analysis, Rachel Crow Dec 2020

Effective Ell Instruction And The Siop Model: A Comparative Analysis, Rachel Crow

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Although English language learners (ELL) constitute the fastest growing segment of the U.S. student population, the majority of teachers are not prepared to meet the instructional needs of students learning English as a second language. The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model has been a popular way of delivering ELL content instruction. I will be drawing comparisons and determining differences between the SIOP instructional model and what current research identifies as effective ELL instruction. The goal of this research is to identify possible benefits or drawbacks to using the SIOP model to teach academic language to English Language Learners, as …

Single-Arm Prospective Interventional Study Assessing Feasibility Of Using Gallium-68 Ventilation And Perfusion Pet/Ct To Avoid Functional Lung In Patients With Stage Iii Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Nicholas Bucknell, Amir Iravani, Et Al Dec 2020

Single-Arm Prospective Interventional Study Assessing Feasibility Of Using Gallium-68 Ventilation And Perfusion Pet/Ct To Avoid Functional Lung In Patients With Stage Iii Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Nicholas Bucknell, Amir Iravani, Et Al

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: In the curative-intent treatment of locally advanced lung cancer, significant morbidity and mortality can result from thoracic radiation therapy. Symptomatic radiation pneumonitis occurs in one in three patients and can lead to radiation-induced fibrosis. Local failure occurs in one in three patients due to the lungs being a dose-limiting organ, conventionally restricting tumour doses to around 60 Gy. Functional lung imaging using positron emission tomography (PET)/CT provides a geographic map of regional lung function and preclinical studies suggest this enables personalised lung radiotherapy. This map of lung function can be integrated into Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) radiotherapy planning …

Cellular Proliferation Of Equine Bone Marrow- And Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Decline With Increasing Donor Age, Jasmin Bagge, James N. Macleod, Lise C. Berg Dec 2020

Cellular Proliferation Of Equine Bone Marrow- And Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Decline With Increasing Donor Age, Jasmin Bagge, James N. Macleod, Lise C. Berg

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Background: Bone marrow (BM)- and adipose tissue (AT)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are used increasingly for autologous cell therapy in equine practice to treat musculoskeletal and other injuries. Current recommendations often call for 10–100 million MSCs per treatment, necessitating the expansion of primary cells in culture prior to therapeutic use. Of concern, human and rodent studies have shown a decline of both MSC recovery from sampled tissue and in vitro proliferative capacity with increasing donor age. This may be problematic for applications of autologous cell-based therapies in the important equine demographic of older patients.

Objectives: To investigate the effect of …

We explore marine reservoir effects (MREs) in seal bones from the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas regions. Ringed and bearded seals have served as dietary staples in human populations along the coasts of Arctic northeast Asia and North America for several millennia. Radiocarbon (14C) dates on seal bones and terrestrial materials (caribou, plants seeds, wood, and wood charcoal) were compared from archaeological sites in the Bering Strait region of northwestern Alaska to assess MREs in these sea mammals over time. We also compared these results to 14C dates on modern seal specimens collected in AD 1932 and …

College-aged women and men are an important catch-up population for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination interventions. Limited research has explored technology-mediated HPV vaccination awareness interventions aimed at college students. The purpose was to evaluate a novel, technology-mediated, social media-based intervention to promote HPV vaccination among college students. A controlled, quasi-experimental, mixed methods study examined the feasibility of a technology-based intervention among two undergraduate classes ( = 58) at a public university in the southeastern United States of America. Classes were randomized to receive one of two cancer prevention programs (i.e., HPV vaccination (intervention) or healthy weight (control)). Both programs contained eight …
