Overcoming Business Process Reengineering Obstacles Using Ontology-Based Knowledge Map Methodology, Mahmoud Abdellatif, Marwa Salah Farhan, Naglaa Saeed Shehata
Future Computing and Informatics Journal
Business process reengineering (BPR) is identified as one of the most important solutions for organizational improvements in all performance measures of business processes. However, high failure rates 70% is reported about using it the most important reason that caused the failure is the focus on the process itself; regardless of the surrounding environment, and the knowledge of the organization. The other reasons are due to the lack of tools to determine the causes of the inconsistencies and inefficiencies. This paper proposes Process Reengineering Ontology-based knowledge Map Methodology (PROM) to reduce the failure ratio, solve BPR problems, and overcome their difficulties. …
Damage Control Interdisciplinarity: An Antidote To Death Despair In Military Medicine, Erika "Ann" Jeschke
Damage Control Interdisciplinarity: An Antidote To Death Despair In Military Medicine, Erika "Ann" Jeschke
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
“Diseases of despair” is a conceptually broad category used to describe the phenomenon of premature mortality caused by suicide, drug poisoning, and alcoholic liver disease. Central to this conceptualization of mortality is that death occurs too early in an entire population of individuals infected with social despair. Implicit in the diseases of despair construct is a powerful normative claim about the manner and time of death—that death is bad if it is contextualized in unwanted conditions and happens before reaching midlife. As such, diseases of despair ought to be reduced, if not eliminated. Interestingly, military medical research on combat casualties …

Revisiting Cauti Prevention: A Multifaceted Approach Using Lean Six Sigma, Lisa Ann Behrend
Student Scholarly Projects
This project identified gaps in policy and processes to improve patient outcomes related to workflow in the catheter-associated urinary tract infection policy and process at a 400-bed hospital in southern California. Even with an evidence-based infection prevention bundle in place, the current process was not working, as demonstrated by high catheter-associated infection rates for the last two years.
This project answers the question: Does the use of a comprehensive evaluation of the current policy and process using the Lean Six Sigma quality improvement model influence a reduction in infection rates in patients who have an internal urinary catheter over 15 …
The Effect Of Mymedschedule® Plus Smartphone Application On Antihypertensive Medication Adherence In Hypertensive Adults In The Outpatient Setting, Meredith Kelly
DNP and Student Works
One in three adults in the United States are diagnosed with hypertension, a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke, which are two of the most common causes of death. Hypertension is often uncontrolled due to medication nonadherence related to forgetfulness. Technology, specifically the use of smart phones and their applications can aid in enhancing medication adherence through medication reminders and applications that track medication adherence. This quality improvement project evaluates the effectiveness of the smart phone application MyMedSchedule® Plus on enhancing medication adherence in hypertensive adults being treated in the outpatient setting. Data collection includes self-reported medication adherence …

Inclusive Infrastructure: Digital Scholarship Centers And The Academic Library Liaison, Matthew Hannah, Erla Heyns, Rick Mulligan
Inclusive Infrastructure: Digital Scholarship Centers And The Academic Library Liaison, Matthew Hannah, Erla Heyns, Rick Mulligan
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
A paradox exists in the building and managing of digital scholarship centers in academic libraries. While imagined as collaborative library spaces, such centers often remain “siloed” from the subject specialists who work with departments to build collections, assess critical needs, and collaborate with faculty and students. In this article, the authors argue that such a silo effect contributes to a sense of separation, skepticism, and even resentment toward digital scholarship initiatives and fails to utilize the full expertise of the academic research library. Interviewing the directors of fifteen digital scholarship centers located in libraries, the authors assess the current ecosystem …

The Hidden Paths Of Category Research: Climbing New Heights And Slippery Slopes, Giusseppe Delmestri, Filippo Carlo Wezel, Elizabeth Goodrick, Marvin Washington
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Category research has flourished over the last decade. While this body of work has prioritized the behavioral and economic consequences of stable classification systems, the papers in this special issue challenge this orientation by highlighting the importance of category dynamics for improving our understanding of markets and fields. We show how these papers support the emergence of category maintenance, the recategorization of mature categories, and the consolidation of new categories as understudied phenomena and as the next research challenges to pursue. After connecting the main findings of the papers in this special issue into a unified process model, we discuss …

Defining The Value Of Educational Equilibrium For Immigrant And At-Risk Youths Through Art Education In The 2020s And Beyond, Clovis Benjamin Nelson
Pluriversal Design Conference Series
The purpose of this study is to explore the inefficiencies of a one-size-fits-all curricular structure that has no bearing on the anthropological behavior of unique learners. Little is known about cultural relevance in learning through artistic means such as the visual arts, especially for unique project-based learners. This paper is a methodological consideration of a specific visual arts teaching approach for global application in the effort of shaping a “world of many centers.” Attention is given to the natural principles of ecological psychology, identifying the construct of the anthropological respectability of indigenous voices globally, and clarifying related scientific perception-action. The …
Speculation Of The Purpose Of Life In 2050 From Kyoto: Case Study On Transition Design In Japan, Masaki Iwabuchi, Daijiro Mizuno
Speculation Of The Purpose Of Life In 2050 From Kyoto: Case Study On Transition Design In Japan, Masaki Iwabuchi, Daijiro Mizuno
Pluriversal Design Conference Series
Japanese life and career situation have become opaque due to nationwide problems such as the collapse of lifetime employment, the aging society with declining birth rates, and the drop in GDP manifested in a reduction in international competitiveness. Statistics show that the younger generation of Japan has significantly lower ratings of self-confidence, willingness to contribute to society, and hopes for the future, compared to other nations. Under these circumstances, we aimed to speculate on a humane vision where everyone can live with a meaningful purpose (*ikigai* in Japanese) from the historical city of Kyoto, Japan. Using the theories underpinning Transition …
Bridging Design Prototypes & Autonomous Design, Gloria Gomez
Bridging Design Prototypes & Autonomous Design, Gloria Gomez
Pluriversal Design Conference Series
The bridging design prototype (BDP) approach is a human-centred design method for individual designers and small organisations. BDPs are fully functional rapid prototypes that user communities accept to incorporate in real activities; while designers use them for learning about the community, the context, and the practice. Experimentation should not require the presence of designers. By functional, it means all features should operate. But, BDPs are not necessarily minimum viable products, as the digital or tangible materials with which they are built could have a limited lifespan. Informed by autonomous design, this reflection involved a meta-analysis of a project carried out …

Decision-Making As An Essential Element Of Our Field, John M. Lande
Faculty Blogs
This post suggests that we think of our work as focused on process design, strategy, and decision-making in managing conflict. Our field seeks to help parties solve problems when they lack good (or sometimes any) practical dispute resolution options. This post describes such situations and identifies strategies to increase and improve parties’ decision-making.
Understanding The Administrative Role Fo School Psychology District Leaders, Alivia Nicole Smith
Understanding The Administrative Role Fo School Psychology District Leaders, Alivia Nicole Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Very few articles in the published research literature have considered the clinical supervision of school psychology and even fewer articles explore the administrative supervision of school psychologists. The purpose of this study is to describe the roles, and responsibilities, and challenges faced by district leaders who supervise school psychologists. Using a purposeful sample, participants met criteria for this study if they worked at the district level, supervised at least three school psychologists, and were responsible for hiring and firing school psychologists. Nineteen participants qualified for this study and completed a phone interview that included eight open-ended questions. Participants shared that …

Nonprofit Church Leaders’ Perceptions And Lived Experiences Involving Innovation Competency And Change Management: A Phenomenological Study, Charity R. Addai-Duah, Stephanie N. Hoon, Salvatore J. Sinatra
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Innovation competency among religious leaders has been an area of study as nonprofit researchers continue to discover that conventional ways of managing change are no longer effective when tackling present issues. Discussions regarding using innovation competency to manage change among religious leaders are vague, despite benefits to the nonprofit sector. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of nonprofit church leaders to better understand how innovation competency has shaped organizational change results. Boyatzis’ effective job performance model was the conceptual framework that guided this study. Interview data were gathered from 14 participants who met …
Fighting Dirty In An Era Of Corporate Dominance: Exploring Personality As A Moderator Of The Impact Of Dangerous Organizational Misconduct On Whistleblowing Intentions, Keith Andrew Price
Fighting Dirty In An Era Of Corporate Dominance: Exploring Personality As A Moderator Of The Impact Of Dangerous Organizational Misconduct On Whistleblowing Intentions, Keith Andrew Price
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
As instances of corporate wrongdoing continue to rise globally, the opportunity and need for individual whistleblowers to act as a check on corporate power are also rising. Whistleblowing efforts represent a unique challenge to the power asymmetry that exists between an individual employee and the organization. Due to the serious, pervasive harm to employees and consumers that can stem from organizational misconduct, efforts to identify indicators of whistleblowing likelihood can potentially provide a significant means of prevention. This study used a vignette method to present two different levels of harm occurrence, by manipulating the timing of the consequences of a …

Policy Storms At The Central Office: Conflicting Narratives Of Racial Equity And Segregation At School Committee Meetings, Serena M. Wilcox
Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications
This article reports findings from a multiyear critical ethnography that examined race talk dilemmas of school leaders at the central office at a small urban school district to understand why racialized educational policies and practices still persist against African American students. This study takes a structural approach to investigating the impact that race talk has on educational policymaking at the local district level. The guiding research question in this paper examines how we can understand educational reform and policy implementation and the unintended consequences of those interventions through the local from a historical context.

A Case Study Of The Campus Climate For Diversity At A Hispanic-Serving Institution: Perspectives From Latinx Undergraduate Students, Ariana Vargas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate how Latinx students perceive the campus climate in curricular and cocurricular settings at a four-year public Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in Texas. In addition, the study examined Latinx students’ understanding of the HSI designation and how their expectations of institutional diversity and inclusion are shaped by this awareness. Specifically, the study explored elements of the climate for diversity, as related to the Multicontextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments (Hurtado et al., 2012), including classroom experiences, cocurricular experiences, and relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. The primary sources of data included interviews …

Factors Predicting Sustainability: A Correlational Study Of One Multi-Site Program, Meredith L. King Jensen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Healthcare organizations invest significant economic, physical, and human resources to implement changes and expect sustained benefits for their investments in the long term. Yet, few studies have examined long-term sustainability and factors contributingto sustainability. The primary aim of the study was to gain a better understanding of sustainability and five factors (champions, leadership support, policy, resources, and training and education) that might predict long-term sustainability within the context of one Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) program implemented in a large, nationwide system more than 7 years ago. The secondary aim was to examine the number of nursing staff injuries, …

The Relationship Between School Climate And Student Achievement At The Middle School Level In Georgia, Curtis Brett Wallace
Theses and Dissertations
School leaders from all over our nation are under scrutiny and pressure to raise their students’ academic achievement. Good standards-based classroom teaching, supportive teachers, administrators, and parents, and a motivated student all make for a high achieving student. But what is the relationship of the school’s climate to the achievement level? Does the student’s socioeconomic status affect academic achievement? This study collected data from 431 traditional public middle schools in the state of Georgia serving students in Grade 6 through Grade 8 exclusively during the 2017-18 school year. A stepwise multiple regression was used to examine the relationships in both …
Reflective Teacher Change Processes In The Presence Of A Mathematics Professional Development Intervention, Jason P. Gauthier
Reflective Teacher Change Processes In The Presence Of A Mathematics Professional Development Intervention, Jason P. Gauthier
Dissertations
One of the most common methods employed to help teachers improve the teaching and learning of mathematics is professional development (PD). Research into professional development is a relatively new field, but still we know much about the features of effective PD with respect to such improvements. While the broad features of PD that are effective at creating change are relatively well-defined in the research, our understanding of the process of teacher change remains limited.
To begin to better understand this change process, this study examined the processes of teacher change associated with a specific PD intervention. The PD intervention in …

How And Why Higher Education Information Technology Professionals Keep Their Skill Sets Current, Vicky L. Deur
Dissertations
The rapid change in technology creates a challenge for universities to understand the importance of why and how IT professionals keep current in their skill sets, as opposed to leaving the profession or becoming obsolete in their position. This study captured information from IT professionals in higher education regarding the learning activities they find useful in maintaining or updating their skills, an estimate of time spent in those learning activities both at work and outside work, and information on what factors contributed to this maintenance.
Previous research on social cognitive theory and locus of control theory supported the conceptual frame …
Relational Trust As A Determinant Of Principal Turnover: A Quantitative Analysis, Steven Michael Jeretina
Relational Trust As A Determinant Of Principal Turnover: A Quantitative Analysis, Steven Michael Jeretina
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
The issue of principal turnover in American schools has gained greater attention over the last twenty years due to the trend of double-digit annual principal turnover rates. The connection between principal turnover and school climate has largely been focused on how changes in the principal position negatively affects school climate. No research, to this point, has examined the correlation between relational trust between teachers and their principal and principal turnover rates. This study achieves this goal by addressing the question: What, if any, is the relationship between relational trust and principal turnover? This study employed a quantitative methodology supported by …
Competency-Based Education Through The Lens Of Personalized Learning In A Large Public High School, Marcus J. Belin
Competency-Based Education Through The Lens Of Personalized Learning In A Large Public High School, Marcus J. Belin
Dissertations
When students end the chapter of high school, the question education must ask is, “What does it take for a student to walk across the stage and receive their high school diploma?” Is it a transcript full of passing letters ranging from A–D or is it a known belief that students do not have gaps in their knowledge and can apply their knowledge in real-world situations? This study identifies the problem and the basis of research in the program evaluation. It also focuses on identifying a policy that best supports competency-based education (CBE). Lastly, the study …
Program Evaluation Of Behavior Plans And Rubrics: The Process And Impact On Student Growth, Tamariay Gordon
Program Evaluation Of Behavior Plans And Rubrics: The Process And Impact On Student Growth, Tamariay Gordon
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
In 2017, a behavior plan and rubric, introduced at an alternative behavioral school, hindered students’ transition back to their home school. Students remained at the alternative school because they failed to meet the skewed goals of the behavior plan and rubric. The gathering of qualitative and quantitative data from stakeholders casts a brighter light on the imperfection of the plan and rubric that students and parents failed to understand. A study of the behavior plan and rubric showed areas that created an environment that prevented students from being successful. The development of areas of change produced policy considerations to …
