Organizational Intentions Versus Leadership Impact: The Flexible Work Experience, Susan R. Vroman

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Working mothers with dependent aged children currently represent a significant portion of the workforce. In order to attract and retain this valuable demographic, employers are introducing and maintaining flexible work arrangements (FWA) to enable employees to manage their work and life commitments. However, having an FWA program and effectively supporting it are not synonymous, and this bears impact on employees. This article highlights opportunities and implications for FWA management based on findings from a recent New England healthcare organization case study which illustrates how working mothers experience enacted flexible work arrangement policies. This article identifies methods for organizations and managers …

Improving The Timeliness Of Retinal Exams, Laura Edwards, Andrew Nydegger

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a deterioration of the retina due to damage caused by diabetes. This condition can cause vision distortion and blindness. Screenings for this condition are an important part of regular diabetes management. Currently there are more than 30 million people with diabetes mellitus. Veterans have a 2.5 higher rate of diabetes than the general public and are therefore at higher risk of DR. It is important that healthcare professionals treating diabetic patients routinely screen for this condition. Early detection can help guide care and prevent deteriorations that could lead to blindness. Currently, the national goal for the …

Using Simulation To Enhance Environmental Cleaning Practices In Diverse Healthcare Settings, Alaina Herrington, Michelle Parr, Meg Ziminsky Jul 2020

Using Simulation To Enhance Environmental Cleaning Practices In Diverse Healthcare Settings, Alaina Herrington, Michelle Parr, Meg Ziminsky

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Inadequate cleaning and disinfection practices in the healthcare setting create an environment in which infectious pathogens can linger for days or even weeks on high-touch surfaces, presenting an increased risk of infection transmission to healthcare workers and patients. The World Health Organization recently cited environmental cleanliness as a key element for infection control across all healthcare settings. Yet researchers have found that less than half of all surfaces in United States healthcare settings are adequately cleaned. In the three study settings, administrators have recently documented significant incidences of non-compliant environmental cleaning behaviors of healthcare workers, related patient complaints, and the …

Acuity-Based Assignments To Decrease Missed Nursing Care, Peggy Hershberger

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Nurses strive to deliver quality patient care in a healthcare environment that can be very challenging at times. High patient acuity is one of many variables that contribute to the difficulties that nurses face in the acute care setting. Despite the greatest intentions and persistence to attend to every need and complete every task, nurses may find themselves omitting care when assigned multiple high acuity patients. Previous studies have found that elements of nursing care included in this project are missed an average of 62% across hospitals worldwide. In the study hospital, the nurses on the inpatient renal unit reported …

Social Support As Buffer For Workplace Negative Acts Of Professional Public Sector Employees In Vietnam, Diep T. N. Nguyen, Stephen T. T. Teo, Khai Cong Dinh Jul 2020

Social Support As Buffer For Workplace Negative Acts Of Professional Public Sector Employees In Vietnam, Diep T. N. Nguyen, Stephen T. T. Teo, Khai Cong Dinh

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Much has been known about negative outcomes of workplace bullying in public sectors in low power distance contexts like the UK, USA, and Australia. Little is known about workplace bullying in non-Western contexts characterized by high power distance, bureaucracy, and collectivism. This study advances Conservation of Resource (COR) theory with empirical evidence that the acquisition of social support buffered the indirect impact of bullying on work engagement in a sample of 207 Vietnamese public sector professionals. This research suggests the provision of contextual resources is critically important to enhance employee positive experience of work in the face of workplace bullying.

“Pre-Packaged Sovereignty”: The Fallacy Of Indian Self-Determination In The Bureau Of Indian Affairs (Bia) Tribal Social Services Programs, April Kateri Chavez Jul 2020

“Pre-Packaged Sovereignty”: The Fallacy Of Indian Self-Determination In The Bureau Of Indian Affairs (Bia) Tribal Social Services Programs, April Kateri Chavez

American Studies ETDs

This thesis examines the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) tribal social services programs in New Mexico Native reservation communities. I rely on interviews with current/former BIA social workers and administrators to contextualize my analysis, while revealing the limits of existing social work scholarship and offering recommendations for future scholarship and community work. Using critical Indigenous studies and feminisms along with critical social work, I advance two primary arguments. The first is, despite the so-called self-determination era, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) functions as a settler colonial administration that diminishes tribal sovereignty and perpetuates racist and gendered violence. The capacity …

Despite the depth of research on leaders and leadership in the Western and Asian contexts, the study of leadership in the African context remains at a nascent stage. In this special issue, we take a multilevel perspective to review and synthesize current research on leadership in Africa in three distinct scholarly domains (Organizational Behavior & Human Resources (OB/HR), Strategy and Entrepreneurship). Based on this review, we offer specific recommendations to advance leadership research and improve the scope and rigor of theoretical and methodological approaches. Finally, we present three scholarly works that highlight the distinctive nature of leadership in Africa, including …

Dissertations

This mixed-methods study investigated the different perspectives between faculty, staff, adjunct instructors, and administrators utilizing the Competing Values Framework developed by Cameron & Quinn (2011). The quantitative portion of this study analyzed how each employee type viewed the institution’s current culture and how these perceptions were similar or dissimilar to the preferred culture. The qualitative portion, on the other hand, aimed at understanding each group’s viewpoints on the university’s ability to achieve its mission and purpose, adapt and change, clearly communicate, and to effectively lead. These insights were necessary for the researcher to gain insight into the institution’s culture beyond …

The Culture Of Violent Talk: An Interpretive Approach, Peter Simi, Steven Windisch Jul 2020

The Culture Of Violent Talk: An Interpretive Approach, Peter Simi, Steven Windisch

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

One of the defining characteristics of extremist movements is the adherence to an ideology highly antagonistic to the status quo and one that permits or explicitly promotes the use of violence to achieve stated goals and to address grievances. For members of extremist groups, talk is one of the most concrete manifestations of how adherents communicate their ideas to each other and the general public. These discussions, however, do not necessarily involve a direct correspondence between words and future behavior. To better understand the culture of violent talk, we investigate how white supremacist extremists use these discussions as a rhetorical …

A Strategic Plan To Thread Genomics Competencies Into Undergraduate Curriculum, Holly Mathis

Dissertations

Problem: Genomics in undergraduate nursing education has experienced slow adoption in the United States. Various approaches have been proposed but do not address barriers to successful implementation.

Methods: A strategic plan was developed to increase the amount of genetics and genomic content in the curriculum of an undergraduate nursing program. A gap analysis was performed on the curriculum revealing a paucity of content. A SWOT analysis informed the strategic plan, which included a faculty education program using the ANA/ISONG’s Essentials of Genetic and Genomic Nursing: Competencies, Curricula Guidelines and Outcome Indicators (2nd ed.) (2009) as a foundation.

Bpm Maturity And Digital Leadership: An Exploratory Study, Joyce Van Ee, Ibtissam El Attoti, Pascal Ravesteyn, Benny M.E. De Waal

Communications of the IIMA

When organizations start to digitize, this often means that processes will be changed. The management paradigm that is centered on the continues review and improvement of organizational processes is Business Process Management (BPM). To digitize processes, an organization should have the right competences to deal with both technological and process changes. However, currently, it is not known which competences are needed by leaders to guide an organization with digital process transformation initiatives. Hence, this paper consists of an explorative study based on interviews with five experts to find out if and how the competences related to digital leadership can guide …

Applications Of Open Innovation To The Supply Chain System In The Smes, Taeho Park, Tianqin Shi, Ming Zhou, Shu Zhou

Faculty Publications

The close-knitted structure of a supply chain seems to leave no room for the word 'open'. Closeness builds trust, enables information sharing, benefits transportation and more. Somehow, openness started to benefit supply chain management recently, through a trend called 'open innovation'. Based on gathered anecdotes and our interviews of industry professionals, we attempted to present a more complete picture of open innovation in supply chain management, including its potential benefits, major concerns, adoption hurdles, and future solutions. Our findings identified current perceptions of supply chain practitioners on open innovation and major hurdles and difficulties of implementing open innovation in supply …

Transforming Higher Education: Responding To The Coronavirus And Other Looming Crises, Michael Mascolo Jul 2020

Transforming Higher Education: Responding To The Coronavirus And Other Looming Crises, Michael Mascolo

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

Higher education is being deeply challenged by the coronavirus. The immediate threats of the coronavirus come at the heels of an existing panoply of problems that already threaten higher education as we know it. These include, of course, the looming enrollment crisis, the high cost of higher education, intractable student debt, the corporatization of education, limited learning on campus, and a general loss of faith in higher education among many sectors of the nation. How are colleges and universities to respond to these challenges? This paper calls upon colleges and universities to consider the need for structural transformation in order …

Training To Develop Academic Advisor Efficacy And Workforce Readiness, Jessica Powers Jul 2020

Training To Develop Academic Advisor Efficacy And Workforce Readiness, Jessica Powers

Dissertations

The competitive workforce views training as an investment in human capital, which is seen as its most valuable asset. In order to meet labor demands of tomorrow, the workforce will depend on higher education to educate workers. This will put academic advisors and the training they receive further in the spotlight, as they play a meaningful role in student success. Training has been shown to increase occupational self-efficacy and impact employee performance, but empirical research is lacking from the advisor perspective to explore their perception of training and occupational self-efficacy. In a study of N = 108 of faculty and …

Organizational Dissent: The Implications Of Race And Dissent Outcomes, Siera N. Bramschreiber Jul 2020

Organizational Dissent: The Implications Of Race And Dissent Outcomes, Siera N. Bramschreiber

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Dissent, the public expression of a minority perspective, is valuable to organizations due to its connections with improving decision-making processes within teams. The current study sought to integrate what is known about diversity in thought and diversity in people and how this influences the dissent process. Specifically, I examined if positive perceptions of dissenters (i.e., worthy of respect or courageous) differ based on the race of the dissenter. Second, I examined if stories of successful articulated dissent influence subsequent willingness to dissent. In developing a scenario to manipulate dissent outcomes ranging from negative outcomes (i.e., hostility) to positive outcomes (i.e., …

Age-Related Changes On The Effects Of Job Characteristics On Job Satisfaction: A Longitudinal Analysis, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Kurt Kraiger, Kim L. Henry Jul 2020

Age-Related Changes On The Effects Of Job Characteristics On Job Satisfaction: A Longitudinal Analysis, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Kurt Kraiger, Kim L. Henry

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship

Older adults constitute an increasingly large share of the workforce. Older workers often contribute positively to organizational outcomes through characteristics such as deep organizational knowledge and long-standing client relationships. Thus, it is important to understand how to maintain or increase older workers’ job satisfaction, a variable that has been linked to positive work outcomes. In this study, several hypotheses regarding job satisfaction and age were derived from Carstensen’s socioemotional selectivity theory and were tested using longitudinal analysis of a cross-sequential sample. Supporting socioemotional selectivity theory, results showed that autonomy became increasingly important to job satisfaction as workers age. Contrary to …
