An Assessment Of Dna Extraction Protocols For Herbarium Specimen: The Case Of Uaeu Herbarium, Mouza Ali Hasan Mohammad Alshehhi
Biology Theses
The herbarium collections have become vastly used due to the recent developments in molecular techniques. Molecular techniques such as DNA extraction and DNA sequencing are playing an important role in studying genetic makeup of plant and identifying the evolutionary relationship using DNA bar coding. Herbarium collection is considered as one of the potential source to access the genetic material of the extinct plant species. Study focused on the DNA isolation process using five isolation techniques: Maxwell, Synergy, Qiagen, I-Genomic , and CTAB on herbarium desert/medicine plant: Inula Helenium, Chenopodium album, Salsola Kali, Haloxylon Persicum, Atriplex Halimus and compared them with …

BACKGROUND: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are a common and costly quality problem, and their prevention is a national priority. A decade ago, researchers identified an evidence-based bundle of practices that reduce CLABSIs. Compliance with this bundle remains low in many hospitals.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess whether differences in core aspects of work environments-workload, quality of relationships, and prioritization of quality-are associated with variation in maximal CLABSI bundle compliance, that is, compliance 95%-100% of the time in intensive care units (ICUs).
METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A cross-sectional study of hospital medical-surgical ICUs in the United States was done. …
A Nanoparticle Uptake Assay To Demonstrate The Role Of Fc Receptor Medicated Phagocytosis In Influenza Immunity, Jackson Shriver
A Nanoparticle Uptake Assay To Demonstrate The Role Of Fc Receptor Medicated Phagocytosis In Influenza Immunity, Jackson Shriver
Honors Thesis
Vaccination against influenza can significantly minimize the severity of an influenza virus infection, but these vaccines are not 100% effective at preventing and eliminating infections. The target of vaccine-induced immunity is the hemagglutinin (HA) protein expressed by the virus. Antibodies that bind to the HA protein protect the host through neutralization, initiation of complement, or by interacting with host immune cells. Virus neutralization requires high levels of antibodies, which may wane between vaccination and infection, antibodies that enhance host cellular responses are critical for maintaining anti-influenza immunity later during the season. It is known that Fc receptors contribute to the …

CD4+ T cells subsets have a wide range of important helper and regulatory functions in the immune system. Several studies have specifically suggested that circulating effector CD4+ T cells may play a direct role in control of HIV replication through cytolytic activity or autocrine β-chemokine production. However, it remains unclear whether effector CD4+ T cells expressing cytolytic molecules and β-chemokines are present within lymph nodes (LNs), a major site of HIV replication. Here, we report that expression of β-chemokines and cytolytic molecules are enriched within a CD4+ T cell population with high levels of the T-box transcription factors T-bet and …

Prediction Factors For Release Of Wildlife At A Midwestern Rehabilitation Facility, Abigail E. Smith
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Wildlife rehabilitation is a large and internationally known field with thousands of rehabilitators around the world. Resources, such as time and money, are extremely limited in rehabilitation facilities and not all animals are candidates for release due to injuries or illnesses that make them unlikely to survive in the wild. Understanding what factors predict release would be useful in focusing limited resources, but there has been little investigation previously. The purpose of this study is to determine what factors affect the survival of mammals and birds at an American Midwest wildlife rehabilitation center. It was found that animals admitted with …

Engineering Synthetic Antibody For Prostate Cancer Detection, Kimberley Gonzalez, Tatum Prosswimmer, Cassandra Stawicki
Bioengineering Senior Theses
This Senior Design project seeks to manufacture an E. Coli based antibody for prostate cancer detection using unnatural amino acid incorporation. Current diagnostic techniques take advantage of the high binding specificity of monoclonal antibodies to detect the concentration of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in a blood sample. Production of this technology is lengthy and costly, while simultaneously incurring countless ethical problems related to animal welfare and accessibility. This project proposes a synthetic antibody that can be produced efficiently in single E. Coli cells and exhibits complementary binding to PSA. By incorporating an unnatural amino acid into a recombinant peptide sequence, …

BACKGROUND: Loss to care is high among asymptomatic HIV-infected women initiated on antiretroviral therapy (ART) during pregnancy or in the postpartum period. However, whether pregnancy itself plays a role in the high loss to care rate is uncertain. We compared loss to care over seven years between pregnant and non-pregnant women at enrollment into HIV care in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all ART-naive women aged 15-45 initiating HIV care at two large clinics in Kinshasa, DRC, from 2007-2013. Pregnancy status was recorded at care enrollment. Patients were classified as having no …

Management Of Cardiac Hemochromatosis, Wilbert S. Aronow
NYMC Faculty Publications
Iron-overload syndromes may be hereditary or acquired. Patients may be asymptomatic early in the disease. Once heart failure develops, there is rapid deterioration. Cardiac hemochromatosis is characterized by a dilated cardiomyopathy with dilated ventricles, reduced ejection fraction, and reduced fractional shortening. Deposition of iron may occur in the entire cardiac conduction system, especially the atrioventricular node. Cardiac hemochromatosis should be considered in any patient with unexplained heart failure. Screening for systemic iron overload with serum ferritin and transferin saturation should be performed. If these tests are consistent with iron overload, further noninvasive and histologic confirmation is indicated to confirm organ …
