Transforming Academic Nursing: Educating Nurses On The Health Challenges Of Climate Change, Clara Granda-Cameron, Lisa Whitfield-Harris

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: Climate change is a major public health threat for humanity. Over the coming decades, morbidity and mortality are expected to increase, particularly in vulnerable communities, due to increased heat, poor air quality, undernutrition, and vector-borne diseases. To care for populations who reside in these communities, undergraduate and graduate nursing students must be educated, which requires integrating climate change topics into the nursing curriculum.

Purpose: We piloted a course module about climate change and health and tested its effectiveness as a tool for educating nursing students.

Methods: Using a pre-post intervention design, 192 undergraduate and graduate nursing students enrolled in …

The Association Between The Gnb3 Rs5443 C/C Genotype And Obesity Phenotypes In Taiwanese Individuals, Ling-Yi Xiao, Zi-Lun Lai, Yang-Di Su, Szu-Yun Wang, Nia-Jia Zheng, Po- Ren Hsueh Feb 2026

The Association Between The Gnb3 Rs5443 C/C Genotype And Obesity Phenotypes In Taiwanese Individuals, Ling-Yi Xiao, Zi-Lun Lai, Yang-Di Su, Szu-Yun Wang, Nia-Jia Zheng, Po- Ren Hsueh

BioMedicine

Background: The prevalence of obesity has increased significantly over the

years, and its health concerns cannot be underestimated. Obesity not only

causes potential mobility limitations in daily life but also increases the risk of

developing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and other health

conditions. While an imbalanced diet and lack of exercise are well-known

causes of obesity, genetic patterns also influence its development. Although the GNB3 gene is known to be involved in lipid metabolism and fat cell

differentiation, studies have shown inconsistent associations between a

common single nucleotide polymorphism of GNB3 (c.825C>T, rs5443) and

obesity across different populations. Therefore, …

Faculty Research 2026

Each year, influenza A virus (IAV) infection of the lung causes half a million deaths worldwide. Patients with compromised immunity experience distinct influenza pathogenesis; however, most IAV-related research is done with wild-type mice or people who are otherwise healthy. We utilize a model of immunocompromised recombination-activating gene 1 (Rag1)-knockout (KO) mice to discover natural killer (NK) cell activation and regulation mechanisms during IAV infection. The treatment of IAV-challenged Rag1-KO mice with a monoclonal antibody (mAb) targeting programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) triggers NK cell-intrinsic signaling of PD-L1 and significantly delays lethality. This treatment upregulates tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand on …

Faculty Research 2026

BACKGROUND. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic provided a rare opportunity to study how human immune responses develop to a novel viral antigen delivered through different vaccine platforms. However, to date, no study has directly compared immune responses to all 3 FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines at single-cell multiomic resolution.

METHODS. We longitudinally profiled SARS-CoV-2–naive adults (n = 31) vaccinated with BNT162b2, mRNA-1273, or Ad26.COV2.S, integrating plasma cytokines, antibody titers, and single-cell multiomic data (DOGMA-Seq).

RESULTS. We discovered a distinct, transient IFN program termed ISG-dim, which emerged specifically 1–2 days after the first mRNA dose in approximately 10% of myeloid cells. This state was …

Investigation Of Antimicrobial Synergism Of Actinomycin Derivatives From Streptomyces Parvus 35m1 Against Escherichia Coli Atcc 25922, Özge Can, Mustafa Ünver Kurt, Meli̇s Küçüksolak, Ataç Uzel, Erdal Bedi̇r

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: Limited drug development and increased antibiotic tolerance among Gram-negative bacteria have led researchers to consider combination therapy. Actinomycin derivatives, particularly actinomycin D, exhibit a wide range of bioactivities, including antibacterial effects. However, actinomycin D is less effective against Gram-negative pathogens. Therefore, it is essential to demonstrate the synergy of actinomycin D and its derivatives with clinically known antibiotics against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and investigate the effects on cellular morphology.

Materials and methods: Streptomyces parvus 35M1 isolated from coastal sediment in İzmir/Türkiye was identified via genome sequencing. Large-scale (30 L) fermentation followed by chromatographic purification yielded compounds 1 (actinomycin …

A New Prospective Of Colistin Resistance Profile Of Some Staphylococcus Species Isolated From Iraqi Wound Fractured Foot, Zahraa M. Fadhil, Halah H Al-Haideri

Baghdad Science Journal

Sulbactam belongs to β-lactamase inhibitors that are more commonly used for Gram-negative bacteria than Gram-positive bacteria. In this study, nine different species of Staphylococcus (S. aureus, S. epidermidis, S.hominis, S. lentus, S. pseudintermedius, S. lugdunensis, S. haemolyticus, S. sciuri , and S. warneri. were isolated from wounded-fractured feet of Iraqi patients. The spectrum of activity of sulbactam and colistin against all isolates was evaluated. Surprisingly, among S. aureus isolates, 5 (12) isolates were sensitive to colistin, whereas, all bacterial isolates were completely resistant to sulbactam. Here, our study revealed that combining …

Navigating (M)Otherhood: Perception, Practice, & Policy Of Adolescent Pregnancy In The North Coast Of Perú, Mahir Rahman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

“It’s a vicious circle”, the obstetricians of Huanchaco repeated time and time again after discussing a recently pregnant 13-year-old girl who had just moved to the North Coast of Perú. Adolescent pregnancy is an extremely stigmatized topic in global maternal and child health discourse. Pregnant adolescents are subject to educational policy, clinical protocol, and community practice. While global scholarship emphasizes adolescent pregnancy prevention, limited scholarship focuses on the conditions in which adolescent pregnancy is perceived, discussed, and managed. More importantly, these perspectives are even less documented amongst the North Coast of Perú.

This thesis serves as an ethnographic exploration of …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

The management of Crohn’s disease (CD) using anti-tumour necrosis factor therapy in tuberculosis (TB)-endemic regions poses major clinical challenges due to the risk of latent TB infection reactivation. This bibliometric–systematic literature review synthesised evidence from 17 peer-reviewed studies (2020–2025) evaluating adalimumab administered with concurrent prophylactic antitubercular therapy. Thematic synthesis and bibliometric mapping using VOSviewer demonstrated that adalimumab achieved 60–85% clinical remission in moderate-to-severe CD and axial spondyloarthritis while enhancing mucosal healing. However, 1–3% of patients developed active TB despite appropriate screening and isoniazid prophylaxis, revealing false-negative diagnostics and partial chemoprophylaxis protection. These findings highlight the need for region-specific frameworks integrating …

Igg4-Related Disease Associated With Pearson Syndrome: A Case Of Rapid Decline, Kai-Jing Zhang, Xiao-Juan Lv, Qin-Qin Zhao, Wan-Wan Xu

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases

We report a diagnostically challenging case of a 1-year-old female with refractory thrombocytopenia, sideroblastic anemia, pancreatitis and metabolic decompensation, ultimately attributed to coexisting IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) and Pearson syndrome (PS)—a previously undocumented association. Key findings of the case were 1. Treatment resistant thrombocytopenia despite IVIG, corticosteroids, and eltrombopag (transient response only). 2. Elevated IgG4 (840 μg/mL) and pancreatitis thought to be secondary to IgG4-RD. 3. Mitochondrial DNA deletion (m.10052_15604 del, 93.2% heteroplasmy) and ringed sideroblasts secondary to PS. 4. Fatal Metabolic Crisis with hyperlactatemia (peak 8.4 mmol/L) and cardiac failure, underscoring PS's rapid progression. This is the first reported association …
