Background: Temporal variation of temperature-health associations depends on the combination of two pathways: pure adaptation to increasingly warmer temperatures due to climate change, and other attenuation mechanisms due to non-climate factors such as infrastructural changes and improved health care. Disentangling these pathways is critical for assessing climate change impacts and for planning public health and climate policies. We present evidence on this topic by assessing temporal trends in cold- and heat-attributable mortality risks in a multi-country investigation. Methods: Trends in country-specific attributable mortality fractions (AFs) for cold and heat (defined as below/ above minimum mortality temperature, respectively) in 305 locations …

Evaluation Of A Drug Delivery System Based On Cyclodextrins For Cancer Therapy, Caroline Mendes Jan 2018

Evaluation Of A Drug Delivery System Based On Cyclodextrins For Cancer Therapy, Caroline Mendes

Doctoral

Due to the side-effects caused by regular chemotherapy, the development of drug delivery systems that can specifically target cancer cells and deliver the therapeutic dose is required. In this study, a folate-derivative of β-cyclodextrin has been studied as a vehicle for targeting folate receptors (FR) and delivering the chemotherapeutic drug methotrexate (MTX). FRs can be considered key cell membrane targets since they are commonly over-expressed in cancer cells and play an important role in cancer development and progression. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides with a unique structure that allows them to form inclusion complexes with guest molecules, increasing their aqueous …

Information Management As A Nexus To Promote The Use Of Indigenous Medicine And Enhance Public Healthcare Delivery: A Bibliometric Analysis, Patrick Ajibade (Phd), Stephen M. Mutula Prof. Jan 2018

Information Management As A Nexus To Promote The Use Of Indigenous Medicine And Enhance Public Healthcare Delivery: A Bibliometric Analysis, Patrick Ajibade (Phd), Stephen M. Mutula Prof.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper uses a bibliometric analysis to explore the citations trend in ethnomedicine and information management. A text mining algorithm of a total number of 8, 333 publications (n = 8,333) was conducted based on the title, abstract and keywords to find co-occurrence of key terms in indigenous medicine and information management. The first objective was to analyze the authorship, outputs and citation trends and establish if researchers have been able to establish a nexus between indigenous herbal use and the role of information management in promoting such use. Secondly, the study sought to establish if there is already …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Background: The study examines India’s research productivity in immunology and microbiology during 2012-2016, depending on various parameters, including India’s annual average research growth rate, institutional output profile of institutions and profiles of some of the most productive authors.

Aim: The focus of this study is to analyze performance of India’s research output in immunology and microbiology, the quality and productivity of major institutions participating in research in microbiology and immunology and the productivity and quality of leading authors in research in immunology and microbiology.

Methods: The study in the area of immunology and microbiology using 5 years publications data from …

Effects Of Essential Oils And Amino Acid Profile On The Growth And Health Of Receiving Cattle, Kelsey Machens Jan 2018

Effects Of Essential Oils And Amino Acid Profile On The Growth And Health Of Receiving Cattle, Kelsey Machens

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effects of amino acid profile and essential oil products on receiving calf growth and feed efficiency, as well as evaluate the effects of amino acid profile and essential oil products on fecal and blood Immunoglobulin A (IgA) concentrations as a marker for systemic and gastrointestinal tract immune status of receiving calves. One hundred-thirty crossbred calves (500-600 lbs) were transported to the ADM Animal Nutrition Research Facility in Mendon, IL. On d -1, cattle were weighed, dewormed, implanted, vaccinated, and a rectal temperature was recorded. An at-risk group of cattle was targeted …

Trophic Interactions And Niche Partitioning Within A Post-White-Nose Syndrome Temperate Bat Community, Macy Kailing Jan 2018

Trophic Interactions And Niche Partitioning Within A Post-White-Nose Syndrome Temperate Bat Community, Macy Kailing

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The decline of cave-dwelling bats since the introduction of white-nose syndrome (WNS) to North America changed the way communities interact. Disease-mediated competition at the community level can influence the ability of imperiled species to recover because of competitive exclusion. In western Kentucky, tri-colored bats, Perimyotis subflavus, which are susceptible to WNS severely declined following WNS occurrence. During that same period, evening bats, Nycticeius humeralis, which are not susceptible to WNS increased markedly. To investigate the influence of WNS on community structure, the diets of sympatric tri-colored and evening bats were assessed. Guano was collected from evening (n=37) and …

Working To Improve Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination Uptake In Michigan, Courtney Cole, Angela Mcfall Jan 2018

Working To Improve Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination Uptake In Michigan, Courtney Cole, Angela Mcfall

Michigan Journal of Public Health

Increased cases of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) related cancers and low HPV vaccine uptake are public health concerns that directly affect young adults and adolescents around the country. The HPV vaccine is recommended to prevent HPV associated cancers. Increased awareness and health education interventions are needed to promote the importance of the HPV vaccine and to achieve an HPV vaccine completion rate of 80% as outlined by the Healthy People 2020 goal. The Michigan Cancer Consortium HPV vaccine Priority Workgroup is working to improve vaccine uptake in Michigan through statewide projects that promote health education resources and address barriers associated with …
