Informal, Inquisitorial, And Accurate: An Empirical Look At A Problem-Solving Housing Court, Jessica K. Steinberg
Informal, Inquisitorial, And Accurate: An Empirical Look At A Problem-Solving Housing Court, Jessica K. Steinberg
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Substantive justice is often seen as elusive in courts dominated by low-income individuals. Complex court rules, coupled with pervasive lack of counsel, can make it difficult for the traditional adversary process to identify and redress legitimate grievances. This Article takes on the social problem of substandard housing and examines whether inquisitorial procedure has the potential to produce accurate outcomes in a tribunal dominated by the unrepresented.
Relying on in-court observations of nearly 300 hearings, and a longitudinal review of nearly 75 cases, this Article surfaces the regularized procedures utilized by a purported “problem-solving” housing court, and theorizes that the inquisitorial …

The overall prevalence of hard tick infestation on cattle was 56.8%. In total, seven different species were identified: Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (32.6%), Hyalomma anatolicum (28.8%), Hyalomma excavatum (19%), …
Paleodemographic And Biochemical Analysis Of Urbanization, Famine, And Mortality, Brittany S. Walter
Paleodemographic And Biochemical Analysis Of Urbanization, Famine, And Mortality, Brittany S. Walter
Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization is a transitional period often associated with deteriorating population health and increased mortality, as the rapid increase of population density in urban centers facilitates the transmission of infectious diseases, unsanitary living conditions, and precarious food supplies. Research on the transition to an urban environment in the past offers a temporal depth to our understanding of the consequences of urbanization that cannot be accomplished through examination of contemporary populations. This project integrates paleodemographic (hazard analysis) and biochemical (stable isotope analysis) approaches to examine the health and diet of inhabitants in late medieval England (c. 1120-1539 CE), specifically the relationship between …
Analysis Of Food Exposures In Foodborne Disease Outbreaks, Alecia T. Alianell
Analysis Of Food Exposures In Foodborne Disease Outbreaks, Alecia T. Alianell
Theses and Dissertations
Foodborne illness remains a serious public health problem in the United States in general as well as South Carolina in particular. Obtaining good food ingestion histories as well as possible risky environmental exposures is one of the earliest, most important tasks to complete in any foodborne outbreak investigations. Because time is of the essence in investigations, we have evaluated a rarely used biostatistical method, Random Forests, to data obtained from DHEC. Random Forests has the potential to facilitate more rapid identification of foods or environmental exposures that may be associated with outbreaks. We also examined previous cases of salmonellosis using …

Investigating Novel Methods Of Interaction With Pharmaceutically Relevant Enzymes, Cory T. Reidl
Investigating Novel Methods Of Interaction With Pharmaceutically Relevant Enzymes, Cory T. Reidl
Dissertations
Metalloproteins requiring one or more metal ions for normal function make up 30% of all known proteins, and many critical biological pathways contain at least one metallo-enzyme. Di-nuclear metallo-proteins constitute a large class of these proteins yet we currently lack effective methods of inhibiting these enzymes for the development of new medical therapies, particularly for the discovery of new antibiotics. Our work has focused on developing novel functionalities that selectively interact with di-nuclear catalytic centers, and we are targeting three separate di-zinc-metallo-enzymes that are unique to bacteria and play key roles in their growth and development. These enzymes are DapE, …

Vector Competence Of Aedes Sierrensis And Culex Pipiens Complex (Diptera: Culicidae) For Dirofilaria Immitis (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) In Northern California, Jeffrey Allan Kurosaka
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Dirofilaria immitis Leidy (dog heartworm) is a life-threatening parasite transmitted by mosquitoes to domestic dogs. Endemic in the eastern United States, cases have become more prevalent over the last few decades. While prevalence in California is generally low, Lake and San Joaquin Counties have reported rates comparable to the East Coast at 3.73% and 0.71%(CAPC 2017), respectively. Aedes sierrensis is thought to be responsible for transmission in California, but in some cases, it exists in inadequate quantities and temporal ranges to explain parasite activity. Based on Huang et al. (2013) and Tran (2016), bloodfeeding patterns, and other vector criteria, Culex …
The Presumptions Of Classical Liberal Constitutionalism, Matthew J. Lindsay
The Presumptions Of Classical Liberal Constitutionalism, Matthew J. Lindsay
All Faculty Scholarship
Richard A. Epstein’s The Classical Liberal Constitution is an imposing addition to the burgeoning body of legal scholarship that seeks to “restore” a robust conception of economic liberty and limited government to its rightful place at the center of American constitutionalism. Legislators and judges operating within a “classical liberal conception of government,” Epstein explains, would approach skeptically “[a]ll [regulatory] proposals that deviate from the basic common law protections of life, liberty, and property.” Classical liberal constitutional courts would thus renounce the toothless rational basis review of the post-New Deal “progressive mindset,” and instead subject to exacting scrutiny the government’s “purported …

Using Tcr Transgenic, Gp100 Reactive T Cells And Checkpoint Inhibition To Target Lymphangioleimyomatosis, Christian Ankney
Using Tcr Transgenic, Gp100 Reactive T Cells And Checkpoint Inhibition To Target Lymphangioleimyomatosis, Christian Ankney
Master's Theses
Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a low-grade neoplastic disease affecting primarily women. It is characterized by cystic lung disease as well as renal and retroperitoneal tumors called angiomyolipomas and lymphangiomas. Tumor cells have smooth muscle features as well as neuroendocrine cell surface markers, and the disease can be diagnosed by HMB45 staining of tumor cells. We questioned whether expression of melanocytic antigens, specifically gp100, creates an opportunity to treat LAM by adoptive T cell transfer. LAM lung lesions demonstrate poor immune surveillance, therefore adoptive T cell transfer could offer benefits in this disease.
A link was made between melanoma and depigmenting vitiligo …
The Novel Characterization Of Extracellular Vesicles Containing Proteins Which Have Been Implicated In The Pathogenesis Of Hiv Associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Grace Ispas
Master's Theses
Although Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) is practiced, HIV-1 positive individuals still experience HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND), collectively described as the presentation of neurocognitive, behavioral and motor dysfunctions that decrease the quality of life, while increasing the mortality in ART suppressed HIV-1 positive patients.
Current literature suggests that extracellular vesicles are involved in the pathogenesis of HAND as they are believed to be transferring HIV-1 proteins to nearby neuronal cells. Although most studies assume homogeneity among populations, characterizing cellular proteins or RNA levels in bulk, we hypothesize that distinct populations of extracellular vesicles are released and that environmental conditions, including viral infections, …
Optimizing Clean Catch Urine Collection And Its Applications In Urinary Microbiome Studies, Danielle Johansen
Optimizing Clean Catch Urine Collection And Its Applications In Urinary Microbiome Studies, Danielle Johansen
Master's Theses
Clean catch was developed before the advancement of more sensitive assays for culturing urinary bacteria. I reassessed clean catch, endeavoring to optimize this method. Periurethral swabs and voided urines were routinely collected, while analyzing different aspects of the method. I determined that midstream urine contained the least amount of vulvo-vaginal contamination and that the time of collection did not impact the results. I also determined that the use of antiseptic wipes prior to void increased the level of vulvo-vaginal contamination. A small cohort of females collected daily urines over a 17-day period and kept a strict alcohol diary. Females who …
Dexamethasone Treatment Effects On H3k27me3 Chromatin Organization Is Related To Nk Cell Immune Dysregulation, Michael Sarafeno Misale
Dexamethasone Treatment Effects On H3k27me3 Chromatin Organization Is Related To Nk Cell Immune Dysregulation, Michael Sarafeno Misale
Master's Theses
It is well-established that psychological stress reduces natural killer (NK) cell immune function. This reduction is mediated by stress-induced release of glucocorticoids (GC), which can suppress immune function. Associated with suppression of a particular immune function are GC induced histone-epigenetic marks. Histone-epigenetic marks are responsible for the organization and compartmentalization of genomes into transcriptionally active euchromatin domains that are localized to the interior of the nucleus. Transcriptionally silent heterochromatic domains are enriched with methylated epigenetic marks and are localized to the nuclear periphery. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the influence of GC on H3K27me3 chromatin organization by …
Multifunctional Regulatory T Cells From Human Umbilical Cord Blood And The Role Of Tumor Necrosis Factor In Immune Homeostasis, Alexander Nelson
Multifunctional Regulatory T Cells From Human Umbilical Cord Blood And The Role Of Tumor Necrosis Factor In Immune Homeostasis, Alexander Nelson
Master's Theses
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are required to suppress inflammation and prevent autoimmunity. During fetal development Tregs are crucial to maintain tolerance between mother and child. After birth, neonates require tolerance to avoid harmful immune responses to foreign antigens in food and allow colonization with commensal microbes. We demonstrate a propensity for T cells in human umbilical cord blood to differentiate into Tregs in response to antigen receptor stimulation ex vivo. Cord blood-derived Tregs potently suppress T cell proliferation, but also produce pro-inflammatory cytokines known to activate innate immune responses. These results suggest that antigen exposure during early life results in …
Characterization Of Inhibitory Molecules Produced By Lactobacillus Crispatus, Giuseppe Anthony Pistone
Characterization Of Inhibitory Molecules Produced By Lactobacillus Crispatus, Giuseppe Anthony Pistone
Master's Theses
Lactobacillus species are widely accepted as beneficial bacteria of the human microbiota1-8. Lactobacilli spp. are well documented to inhibit pathogens by production and secretion of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), organic acids, and/or proteinaceous bacteriocins into their environment. Most research attributes bactericidal activity of cell free supernatant (CFS) to H2O2 and/or lactic acid. Here, I demonstrate that CFS from a clinical isolate of Lactobacillus crispatus contains a molecule(s) that inhibits uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) colony formation independently of H2O2 and organic acids. Physiologic concentrations of H2O2 and organic acids produced by L. crispatus do not inhibit UPEC colony formation. Incubation of UPEC …

Background: Emergence and spread of drug resistance to every anti-malarial used to date, creates an urgent need for development of sensitive, specifc and feld-deployable molecular tools for detection and surveillance of validated drug resistance markers. Such tools would allow early detection of mutations in resistance loci. The aim of this study was to compare common population signatures and drug resistance marker frequencies between two populations with diferent levels of malaria endemicity and history of anti-malarial drug use: Tanzania and Sénégal. This was accomplished by implementing a high resolution melting assay to study molecular markers of drug resistance as compared to …

Reference Intervals For Thyroid Stimulating Hormone And Free Thyroxine Derived From Neonates Undergoing Routine Screening For Congenital Hypothyroidism At A University Teaching Hospital In Nairobi, Kenya: A Cross Sectional Study, Geoffrey Omuse, Ali Kassim, Francis Kiigu, Ra'ana Hussain, Mary Limbe
Pathology, East Africa
Background: In order to accurately interpret neonatal thyroid function tests (TFTs), it is necessary to have population specific reference intervals (RIs) as there is significant variation across different populations possibly due to genetic, environmental or analytical issues. Despite the importance of RIs, globally there are very few publications on RIs for neonatal TFTs primarily due to ethical and technical issues surrounding recruitment of neonates for a prospective study. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report from Africa on neonatal RIs for TFTs.
Methods: We used hospital based data largely derived from neonates attending the wellness clinic …

Protective Effect Of Anti-Phosphatidylserine Antibody In A Guinea Pig Model Of Advanced Hemorrhagic Arenavirus Infection, John M. Thomas, Philip E. Thorpe
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Objective: Host derived markers on virally infected cells or virions may provide targets for the generation of antiviral agents. Recently, we identified phosphatidylserine (PS) as a host marker of virions and virally-infected cells.
Methods and Materials: Under normal physiological conditions, PS is maintained on the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane facing the cytosol. Following viral infection, activation or pre-apoptotic changes cause PS to become externalized. We have previously shown that bavituximab, a chimeric human-mouse antibody that binds PS complexed with β2-glycoprotein I (β2GP1), protected rodents against lethal Pichinde virus and cytomegalovirus infections.
Results: Here, we determined the antiviral activity …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Leaky gut characterized as decreased transepithelial electrical resistance and increased paracellular permeability to macromolecules is associated with several fatal diseases including sepsis. Pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β is a critical mediator of underlying mechanism through activation of myosin light chain kinase pathway. Blocking the inducible phosphorylated myosin light chain (p-MLC) indicates the successful treatment. Xanthones predominantly found in mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) has been indicated as a potent anti-inflammatory action. Hydroxyxanthones (HDX), the major natural xanthones, have been recently synthesized in various forms. This study aimed to examine and screen the action of various forms of synthetic HDXs, in preventing the increased paracellular …

The objective in this thesis is to create a mathematical model to predict the period of time needed to clear out the pathogens from the bloodstream after the patient receives certain antibiotics. The result will lead to the time where the drug administration can be terminated. This research is to compute the densities of bacteria and malaria in bloodstream at any given time and to compare this level with the actual results of the patient's blood sampling, which was sent to the laboratory for investigation. The laboratory process of the blood sampling will usually take more than 2-3 days to …
Prevalence And Molacular Genetic Analysis Of Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus And Enterovirus 68 Among Children With Acute Lower Respiratory Tract Infection In Thailand, I-Lada Thongpan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes acute lower respiratory tract infection in infants and young children worldwide. A clear description of local RSV molecular epidemiology, evolution, and transmission requires detailed sequence data and can inform new strategies for virus control and vaccine development. To investigate the RSV burden in Thailand over six consecutive years (January 2012 to December 2017). There were two different methods to detect RSV in the present study. First, we screened 3306 samples obtained from children ≤5 years old with acute respiratory tract infection using semi-nested reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) during January 2012 to December 2015. Second, …

New Edta-Based Drug Delivery Carrier, Nathapong Pangkom
New Edta-Based Drug Delivery Carrier, Nathapong Pangkom
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Most of the anticancer drugs are insoluble in water, unspecified to target site and degradable under acidic conditions in the stomach, resulting in decreasing their activities and increasing the side effects. To overcome these problems, drug delivery carriers were used to overcome these problems. Most of the drug delivery carriers were prepared by polymeric micelle systems. However, that of polymeric micelle systems are difficult to synthesize into the random polymers, where different units are aligned on a polymer chain in a random manner, immature drug-incorporation technology and possible chronic liver toxicity due to slow metabolic process. Therefore, the enhancement of …
