Information And Communication Technology (Ict) Literacy: Refining A Construct For Assessment, Louis Michael Verdusco
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This research effort conceptualized, developed, implemented, and examined the psychometric properties of an Information & Communication Technology (ICT) literacy assessment instrument designed for students entering college. This process began with the development of a working definition of the ICT literacy based on the literature and the input of a panel of experts regarding the proposed literacy sub-constructs and the individual test items. A pilot test was conducted to identify areas for improvement. Once these improvements were incorporated, the final assessment instrument was administered to the freshmen class at a private Midwestern comprehensive university with religious affiliation.
The psychometric aspects of …

A Social Semiotic Analysis Of Instructional Images Across Academic Disciplines, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Melanie Landon-Hays
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
Framed in theories of social semiotics, this descriptive multiple case study examined the images used by six middle-school teachers during one school year as they each taught two different subject areas: earth science, language arts, mathematics, and/or social studies. Using Kress and Van Leeuwen’s visual grammar to analyze these images, this study identified discipline-specific patterns in how 1,132 images realized assumptions in regards to the ideational and interpersonal metafunctions of communication. A content analysis suggested discipline-specific differences in the presumed social distance between the content of the images and the students, as well as discipline-specific differences in assumptions about the …

Developments In Television Viewership, Lucile E. Hecht
Developments In Television Viewership, Lucile E. Hecht
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In recent years the ways in which we watch television has changed, and so has the television we watch. “Binge watching,” almost the Oxford English Dictionary’s Word of the Year in 2013, has taken a firm hold on the American television audience who now watches television not according to the broadcast schedule but on its own terms. So, too, has the practice of engaging with other audience members, be they friends, family, or strangers, while watching a show by using a secondary device – a “second screen.” These practices have been developing for some time, and as technology adapts to …
Using Design Thinking To Enhance Construction Site Problem Solving, Ehab Mokhtar
Using Design Thinking To Enhance Construction Site Problem Solving, Ehab Mokhtar
Theses and Dissertations
Problem solving is one of the most important issues in Construction Management (CM), it influences the outcome of the project due to the amount of decisions and problems that the Construction Manager faces in each project. Construction Management is a vital subject that has been in the spotlight of academic research for decades, which led to its emerging by going through the cycles of developing and evolution. The criteria of decision-making and problem solving have also evolved from focusing on the technical and objective aspects of construction to the soft and subjective ones. (Bakht, El Diraby 2015). Nevertheless, the last …

Hm 22: Major Fleet-Versus-Fleet Operations In The Pacific War, 1941–1945, Milan Vego
Historical Monographs
Major naval operations represent an area of study of operational art that Western naval theoreticians and planners have generally neglected. Too much emphasis is given instead to advanced technologies and tactics of weapons, at the expense of combined-arms tactics. The absence of an immediate and serious threat at sea today should not be allowed to prevent the development of sound naval theory and doctrine and the training of naval forces to prepare, plan, and execute major naval/joint operations as part of land campaigns in the littorals or a maritime campaign.

Instructional Concepts And Techniques For The Flight And Aviation Maintenance Instructor, Thomas F. Walby
Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings
As perceptions increase in number, the student assembles them into larger blocks. Without new experience, there can be no new perceptions, but, as previous input is organized, related, and associated, an active cognitive process called insight may occur.
The mind actively processes the information received into new forms. Insight may result in inspirational solutions to problems. Insight contains the ability to apply solutions previously learned to new problems, or to generalize. Forgetting is less of a problem because there are more anchor points. For instruction to be efficient, the information must be presented in a meaningful way which assists the …

Enhancing Engineering Students’ Communication Skills Through A Team-Based Graphics Course Project, Leroy L. Long Iii, Kari Jordan
Enhancing Engineering Students’ Communication Skills Through A Team-Based Graphics Course Project, Leroy L. Long Iii, Kari Jordan
ASEE EDGD Midyear Conference
Although communication skills are highly valued by engineering associations and companies, instructors may find it difficult to incorporate them into specific engineering courses. Some attention has been given to research on undergraduate students’ communication skills. However, additional research and training is needed to help instructors develop curricula -- the type that can enhance students’ communication skills -- in technical subjects like engineering graphics. Such work can help engineering programs offer increased opportunities for students to continually develop desirable professional traits throughout their collegiate experience. This paper will explore the implementation of a team-based graphics course project -- one that focused …

The following study is the result of a naive scholar infiltrating and analyzing a culture that she was unaware of before this experience. The participants in the study demonstrated numerous consistent patterns in their communicative interactions with each other, including: invitational community, marking space, the metaphor of "life as a journey", non-materialistic collectors, concrete positionality, producers and consumers of visual culture, and "the joke is on all of us."

The university and seminary’s work and workplaces evolve within emerging digital ecologies, such as mobile communication, digital fabrication, and cloud hosting. At Abilene Christian University (ACU) in Abilene, TX, we have driven this transformation of educational spaces and curriculum with 1-to-1 and BYOD smartphone and tablet initiatives, and through construction of an interdisciplinary makerspace. Now our provision of personalized access to Adobe Creative Cloud for all students and faculty is again reorienting library spaces and practices with a focus on User Experience (UX). This paper explores: 1) the relation of UXD to library research and instruction. 2) an ecology for …
Textual Curation, Krista Kennedy
Textual Curation, Krista Kennedy
Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition - All Scholarship
This article explores textual curation as a conceptualization of authorship and composition within large information structures that is heavily based on the canon of arrangement. This work is often undertaken through distributed collaboration, thus complicating traditional conceptions of authorial attribution and agency. Central curatorial processes include critical recomposition of prior texts along with the development of small and often invisible textual elements such as architecture, metadata, and strategic links. I offer a grounded definition of textual curation that draws from traditional curatorial fields such as Museum Studies and Library Science as well as Writing Studies’ own subfield of Technical Communication, …

High Capacity Image Steganography Technique Based On Lsb Substitution Method, Marghny H. Mohamed, Loay M. Mohamed
High Capacity Image Steganography Technique Based On Lsb Substitution Method, Marghny H. Mohamed, Loay M. Mohamed
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Steganography is the art of hiding important data by embedding secret message within other file. The least significant bit (LSB) is one of the most important considerations when one want to solve such problems. LSB substitution method exchanges some LSB of the cover-image with the secret data. In this paper, data hiding method using simple LSB substitution is proposed. The main goal of the presented method is to increase the embedding capacity and improve the image quality of the stego-image. The experimental results show better performance of the proposed method compared to the corresponding methods, in terms of PSNR and …
