Enhancing A Housing Technical Design Studio With A Collaborative On-Line Learning Space, Jim Roche

Conference papers

This paper presents the experience in participating in a collaborative learning environment involving different academic programs from various schools of architecture and urban planning within the framework of the OIKONET project. A collaborative project for new urban, environmental and architectural solutions for three social housing blocks built in Dublin in the 1950’s has been designed and implemented on-site and in a web-based learning environment following a blended-learning philosophy. Teachers from other schools have evaluated the student work presented in this environment. This blended-learning approach has contributed to enhancing the educational space of the on-site design studio. Students had to learn …

Rhetoric In The Mass Media: Terrorism Or Freedom Of Speech?, Carolyn Rhoades

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

Terrorism is a widely debated topic on social media networks such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. This is due to the fact that a high percentage of users rely on sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a news source for developing stories and information. In a study conducted in 2015 by Pew Research Center, in association with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, research found that 63 percent of Facebook users and 63 percent Twitter users depend on these social networks for their news, which is a substantial increase from 2013. This paper presents a rhetorical analysis …

Dressing The Part: Costume, Femininity, And Identity In Female Ensebmle Screenplays, Lara Grauerholz-Fisher Jan 2016

Dressing The Part: Costume, Femininity, And Identity In Female Ensebmle Screenplays, Lara Grauerholz-Fisher

Theses & ETDs

While sociologists have discussed everyday dress as costume and elements of the relationship between women and media representation, there has been very little discussion of women’s costumes in media. This thesis examines what is communicated about femininity and identity through costume directions by performing a content analysis of five female ensemble screenplays: The Women (2008), Whip It (2009), For Colored Girls (2010), Bridesmaids (2011), and Pitch Perfect (2012). Three main findings are discussed: the narrative judgments applied to women’s costumes highlight the invisibility of doing femininity appropriately unless there is something to which it can be contrasted, costumes act as …

Theatre Technology: Sound, Image, And The Production Of Meaning, Kamron Scruggs Jan 2016

Theatre Technology: Sound, Image, And The Production Of Meaning, Kamron Scruggs

Theses & ETDs

This portfolio thesis concerns the scenographic and interactive technological features of 20th and 21st century theatre performances. Both the production of meaning and the production of theatre environments in these performances share common ground and utilize iconic techniques of production. Where scenography and its features as creating fictional settings are located within the theatre productions I studied, I have identified key theatre production methodologies in image and sound reproduction. The methodologies of concern proved useful in terms of developing my own performance, a multimedia theatre performance entitled Out of the Blue, Blue Water that premiered in the Black Box Theatre …

Aesthetics, Economics And The Enchantment Of Cloth, Janis Jefferies, Barbara Layne Jan 2016

Aesthetics, Economics And The Enchantment Of Cloth, Janis Jefferies, Barbara Layne

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In a changing world everyone crafts, designs and engages in making: each individual person and each collective subject, from communities to cities and regions, can define and enhance a life project. We are witnessing an unprecedented wave of social innovations, sometimes using technology and sometimes not. As these changes unfold, an expansive open set of process and practices in which new solutions are suggested and new meanings are created. Most revolutions are about energetic movement and upheavals; even if ideas take a while to become ideologies, we don’t think of them as slow events. But the phrase also makes us …

Creating And Implementing Effective Visual Literacy For The Classroom, Daniel Bartlett Jan 2016

Creating And Implementing Effective Visual Literacy For The Classroom, Daniel Bartlett

Theses and Graduate Projects

Over the past 25 years, the way people communicate with one another and others around the world has become less focused on text and more focused on visual imagery. This shift in language makes it increasingly difficult to communicate with students who have been raised in this digital world. Teachers need to have the tools to teach visual literacy techniques, good image resources available to them, and be able to create rich images that improve content comprehension in the classroom. This product, in the form of an interactive website, will empower teachers to understand the impact of visual literacy on …

Principals' Perspectives On Visual Arts Subject Allocation And Value, Joseph J. Durben

Theses and Graduate Projects

Research indicates there are unique benefits for students' learning in the visual arts and creative skills learned in the art studio teach students what is needed to be successful in the 21st century. Many schools reduce allocation time for quality visual arts. Although current federal and state policy indicates that visual art is a core subject, it is treated at times as enrichment. To teach the whole child, there needs to be a balance of subjects and equal access for students. In this qualitative study three themes emerged: I ) Principals view the visual arts as a core subject, 2) …

Proceedings Of Drs2016 International Conference, Vol. 5: Future–Focused Thinking, Peter Lloyd, Erik Bohemia

DRS Conference Volumes

The underlying premise was that 50 years of design research has provided us with a sound understanding of design and a solid foundation upon which to build. The interesting questions, then, appeared to us as not so much how we do more of the same – though that of course has its place – but in how we use what we now know. Hence the three broad questions that the papers in these conference proceedings respond to: How can design research help frame and address the societal problems that face us? How can design research be a creative and active …

Conflict Resolution Behaviors And The Affect Of Identity Standards And Empowerment Needs On Individuals Using External Augmentative And Alternative Communication Devices, Amy R. Parker Jan 2016

Conflict Resolution Behaviors And The Affect Of Identity Standards And Empowerment Needs On Individuals Using External Augmentative And Alternative Communication Devices, Amy R. Parker

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Individuals with communication impairments (CI) are at a distinct disadvantage when attempting to interact through more traditional conversational means. Although their intentions may be similar to peers, physical limitations make verbal articulation of thoughts and feelings a more laborious undertaking. For some, the use of external augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has offered an otherwise unavailable communicative opportunity. However, this type of communication requires more of the non-AAC using conversation partner and, unlike traditional forms of communication, may increase the likelihood of miscommunication. Although there is agreement as to the importance of understanding the experience of individuals using external AAC, …

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This invited essay of To Improve the Academy’s special feature on Creative Scholarship presents one example of creative scholarship in educational development as a forward to other forms and approaches in the special feature. The Impact Of Font Type On Reading, Stephanie Hoffmeister

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Significant differences in brain activation patterns exist between readers with and without dyslexia (Shaywitz, 1998). One possible area of difference involves font style that has led to the development of specific fonts to help individuals with dyslexia. Recent studies of dyslexia-specific fonts provide no specific evidence that they improve an individual's reading ability or speed of reading.

Social Grief: A Grounded Theory Of Utilizing Status Updates On Facebook As A Contemporary Ritual, Celese Catania-Opris Jan 2016

Social Grief: A Grounded Theory Of Utilizing Status Updates On Facebook As A Contemporary Ritual, Celese Catania-Opris

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

The popular Social Networking Site, Facebook, offers its users the ability tocommunicate with others from all over the globe. Individuals can create a virtual identity for themselves enabling members to call, message, and locate others in a matter of seconds. The number of Facebook users appears to increase; yet, the number of members who die daily is not normally accounted. Facebook now permits the memorialization ofthe deceased’s profile. This allows members to continue commenting, sharing photos and videos, and visiting the deceased’s Facebook page. This trend led to the central question of this study, “What benefits, if any, are individuals …
