Improving The Health Of African Americans In The Usa: An Overdue Opportunity For Social Justice, Allan S. Noonan, Hector Eduardo Velasco-Mondragon, Fernando A. Wagner

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine

Using a modified social ecological model, we conducted a review of the literature and nationwide statistics on African American health. We discuss the main social determinants of health and main health disparities, risk factors, the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, and access to health services for blacks in the USA. The mechanisms through which social determinants, including racism, exert their deleterious effects on black health are discussed at the macro and individual levels. Incarceration and mental health care issues are highlighted as priorities to be addressed. African Americans remain the least healthy ethnic group in the USA, a somber …

Evidence Of Female Sex Pheromones And Characterization Of The Cuticular Lipids Of Unfed, Adult Male Versus Female Blacklegged Ticks, Ixodes Scapularis, Ann L. Carr, Daniel E. Sonenshine, John B. Strider Jr., R. Michael Roe

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Copulation in I. scapularis involves physical contact between the male and female (on or off the host), male mounting the female, insertion/maintenance of the male chelicerae in the female genital pore (initiates spermatophore production), and the transfer of the spermatophore by the male into the female genital pore. Bioassays determined that male mounting behavior/chelicerae insertion required direct contact with the female likely requiring non-volatile chemical cues with no evidence of a female volatile sex pheromone to attract males. Unfed virgin adult females and replete mated adult females elicited the highest rates of male chelicerae insertion with part fed virgin adult …

In Search Of "Real" Migrants: The Effects Of County Level Factors On Enrollment In The Migrant Education Program In Kentucky, Thomas Hatton Jan 2016

In Search Of "Real" Migrants: The Effects Of County Level Factors On Enrollment In The Migrant Education Program In Kentucky, Thomas Hatton

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Migrant laborers and their families have historically faced, and continue to face, major barriers in their education. The migrant population is, according to Dr. Michael Romanowski, “the most undereducated major subgroup in the United States” (Romanowski, 2003). The lack of educational attainment among migrant families can be attributed to numerous factors: above all, the disruptive migratory lifestyle of seasonal agricultural workers (Rosenthal & Banz-Spall, 2003), but also to socioeconomic burdens, mental and physical health issues, and more recently, linguistic and cultural barriers.

The Migrant Education Program is a supplemental federal program that was created under Title 1 Part C of …

From Bail Bondsmen To Risk Assessments: Assessing Kentucky's Pretrial Release Approaches, Ismaila Ceesay Jan 2016

From Bail Bondsmen To Risk Assessments: Assessing Kentucky's Pretrial Release Approaches, Ismaila Ceesay

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

As one of only four states that ban bail bond companies, Kentucky is an experiment in the “laboratory of democracy,” which is made even more interesting because the state has tried three different approaches to pretrial release—the Pre-1976 approach, the 1976 to 2011 approach, and the 2011 to present approach. An assessment of these approaches show s how state actions and inaction can affect the right to pretrial release and underscores the importance of adopting appropriate state pretrial release policies.

Potential Protective Effects Of Tualang Honey And Ficus Deltoidea Dack Var.Deltoidea Against Bisphenol A Induced Toxicity In The Reproductive System Of Pre-Pubertal Female Rats / Siti Sarah Mohammad Zaid, Mohammad Zaid Siti Sarah

Student Works (2010-2019)

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most ubiquitous environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals that can disrupt the normal development and functions of the female reproductive system. In the last few decades, considerable amount of evidence has shown that young women are put at high risk of reproductive infertility from their routine exposure to numerous BPA-products since BPA induces increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is responsible for reducing the levels of endogenous antioxidant enzymes and increasing the levels of lipid peroxides. Thus, natural products containing high antioxidant properties such as tualang honey (Malaysian wild local honey) and Ficus …

The Effects Of Prebiotics On Faecal Microbiota In Critical Care Patients Receiving Enteral Nutrition / Mazuin Kamarul Zaman, Kamarul Zaman Mazuin Jan 2016

The Effects Of Prebiotics On Faecal Microbiota In Critical Care Patients Receiving Enteral Nutrition / Mazuin Kamarul Zaman, Kamarul Zaman Mazuin

Student Works (2010-2019)

The provision of nutrition through enteral nutrition (EN) helps to maintain gut function. However, despite the importance of EN to patients, diarrhoea is a common complication in those receiving EN. Meta-analysis conducted revealed that fibre supplementation in enteral formula reduces diarrhoea incidence in patients receiving EN. However, the positive effect was only seen in non-critically ill patients. The undigested fibre (prebiotics) will be fermented to short chain fatty acid (SCFA) and stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria which helps in minimising diarrhoea. In the current literature, the effect of fibre and prebiotics supplementation on faecal microbiota and SCFA remain disputable. The …

The Right To Regulate (Cooperatively), Alexia Brunet Marks Jan 2016

The Right To Regulate (Cooperatively), Alexia Brunet Marks

Publications

The growing number of new technologies in food production— such as nanotechnology, genetic modification, animal cloning, and irradiation—are garnering different regulatory responses around the world. Based on their threshold for tolerating risk, countries are asserting their national right to regulate at home using labeling, quarantine, and outright bans on foods. But domestic regulation has its limits in a free trade environment. Countries that are not mindful of treaty obligations could face legal liability, as seen in the recent litigation between Uruguay and Philip Morris International. In short, traditional models of international regulatory cooperation (IRC) are failing to provide countries with …

Student Works (2010-2019)

Giardia duodenalis is a protozoan parasite that can cause significant diarrhoeal diseases and is the most common intestinal protozoan parasite worldwide. It affects especially children from the rural areas, who are also the most vulnerable group that suffers from nutritional disorders that have been linked to this parasite. Being part of the complex group of parasitic, bacterial and viral diseases that debilitate the susceptible communities in developing regions from achieving full development potential, Giardia was included in the ‘Neglected Diseases Initiative’ in 2004. In Malaysia, information on the epidemiology of Giardia infection among different indigenous communities is limited. Orang Asli, …

Furthering The Quality Agenda In Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services: Understanding The Relationship Between Accreditation, Continuous Quality Improvement And National Key Performance Indicator Reporting, Beverly Sibthorpe, Karen Gardner, Daniel Mcaullay

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

A rapidly expanding interest in quality in the Aboriginal-community-controlled health sector has led to widespread uptake of accreditation using more than one set of standards, a proliferation of continuous quality improvement programs and the introduction of key performance indicators. As yet, there has been no overarching logic that shows how they relate to each other, with consequent confusion within and outside the sector. We map the three approaches to the Framework for Performance Assessment in Primary Health Care, demonstrating their key differences and complementarity. There needs to be greater attention in both policy and practice to the purposes and alignment …

Effects Of Palmitic Acid On Milk Production And Insulin Sensitivity In Mid-Lactation Dairy Cows, Alice Treffry Mathews

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This masters of science research evaluates the effects of palmitic acid (C16:0) supplementation on milk production and insulin sensitivity in mid-lactation dairy cows. The ability of saturated fatty acids (SFA) to enhance milk yield in dairy cows may be due to shifts in glucose utilization caused by reduced insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of palmitic acid (C16:0) on milk production and insulin sensitivity in cows. Twenty multiparous mid-lactation Holstein cows were enrolled in a study consisting of a 5 d covariate, 49 d treatment, and 14 d post-treatment period. All cows received a …

Ecological Factors Influencing Incidence And Severity Of Beech Bark Disease, David P. Mccann Jan 2016

Ecological Factors Influencing Incidence And Severity Of Beech Bark Disease, David P. Mccann

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

American beech have long been observed to escape both signs and symptoms of beech bark disease (BBD). Some may be resistant to Cryptococcus fagisuga (beech scale), a primary component of the BBD complex; research indicates about 1-2% of American beech inherit resistance to beech scale. At the landscape level a variety of environmental factors may induce ecological resistance, a transient condition allowing potentially susceptible individuals to remain disease-free. This project investigated factors that may contribute to ecological resistance, focusing on biotic and abiotic stand characteristics and their relation to BBD incidence and severity. Plots were established at fifteen sites in …
