Co-Creative Digital Twins: Circular And Sustainable Service Design In Smart Agriculture, Lisi You, Meijun Liu, Biyu Zhu

IASDR Conference Series

Smart agriculture promises higher productivity and resource efficiency, yet most implementations remain technology-centric and overlook systemic issues of stakeholder inequality, process opacity, and rural marginalization. This paper introduces Co-Creative Digital Twins, a novel framework that fuses digital twin technologies with value co-creation principles to enable circular and sustainable service design in agriculture. We first review the evolution of agricultural technology—from mechanization through precision farming to digital twins—and situate digital twins within circular-economy and participatory design literatures. We then present a mixed-methods study comprising industry pilots (“Adopt a Cow” and Infarm), rural fieldwork in Inner Mongolia, and a low-cost edge-device prototype …

Uncovering The Role Of Silence In The Thinking Shift During Design Collaboration: From The Perspective Of Six Thinking Hats, Chu Liang, Ying Hu, Ziling Liang, Jing Qian, Yunxiang Shi, Yiming Bai

IASDR Conference Series

Silence in team collaboration is often viewed as a challenge, as it can indicate either a lack of engagement or moments of deep thinking. This inherent ambiguity can leave team members uncertain about how to interpret and respond. Although previous studies have associated silence with some passive behaviors in design collaboration, the nuanced role of silence during thinking shifts remains insufficiently explored. Building on the six thinking hats, this study confirmed the relationship between silence and thinking shifts and identified specific types of silence corresponding to four distinct shifts of thinking hats. Qualitative analysis further revealed the roles of different …

Designing Information Interventions To Support Infant Feeding Autonomy In Multi-Generational Families, Jiayu Wu

IASDR Conference Series

Maternal autonomy is often constrained when social, cultural, and familial dynamics influence infant feeding decisions. In mainland China, the widespread promotion of breastfeeding has intersected with multi generational caregiving structures and medical authority to produce a rigid "breast is best" narrative, frequently leaving mothers with little space for negotiation or emotional support. This study explores how information design can serve as a medium for rebalancing feeding-related decision- making within Chinese families. Through a research-through-design process, the study draws on qualitative interviews with mothers and family members and narrative content collected from Xiao hong shu (Rednote), a popular social media platform …

Establishing Generalizable Garment–Body Interaction Models Through 4d Biomechanical Analysis, Xiaolu Li, Chongyang Ye, Joanne Yip

IASDR Conference Series

Accurate simulation of garment–body interactions is essential for enhancing virtual prototyping in apparel design. However, conventional virtual prototyping platforms rely on rigid avatars that inadequately reflect the complex deformation of human soft tissues, particularly for tight-fitting sportswear. Biomechanical models have been developed to address this issue. Nevertheless, their subject-specificity and reliance on specific imaging data limited their applicability across diverse body types and motions. To overcome these limitations, this study establishes a comprehensive scientific basis for understanding the biomechanical characteristics of soft tissues in young female adults, based on population-level 4D body scanning analysis. Specifically, 4D body scanning technology was …

Sensing Soil Habitability: Relational Data For Multispecies Attunement, Diya Samit, Mathias Funk, Bahareh Barati

IASDR Conference Series

Design research increasingly engages with ecological complexity through the emerging bodies of More- than-Human design (MtHD) and biodesign. While these fields share topical concerns, they differ in their onto-epistemological orientations, particularly in how they employ data. Biodesign often harnesses data to engineer novel functions in living systems, whereas MtHD emphasizes relationality, care, and designing with other-than-humans. Despite growing interest in bridging these perspectives, data practices at their intersection remain predominantly representational or oriented towards instrumental control. This paper responds to calls for rethinking data by introducing Soil Habitability as both a conceptual and methodological lens, grounded in an exploratory research-through-design …

The Creative Process In Interdisciplinary Teams: A Dual Mechanism Model, Shyhnan Liou, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ingri P. Hernandez Sibo, Davi A. Gomez Celis, Yu-Chen Chen, Shin-Bou Lin, Shu-Ting Ai, Chi-Yi Chang

IASDR Conference Series

Interdisciplinary teams are crucial for organizational innovation but face a dual-process challenge: disciplinary differences can either foster creativity-enhancing integrative complexity or hinder it through intellectual centrism. This study examines these opposing mechanisms and their contingent factors. Drawing on paradox theory, we propose that conflict arising from disciplinary differences activates: (1) integrative complexity (the differentiation and integration of contradictory perspectives), which enhances creative performance; and (2) intellectual centrism (a rigid adherence to one’s discipline), which inhibits creativity. Paradoxical task framing (e.g., pursuing novelty and practicality) intensifies both mechanisms. Notably, these effects primarily emerge during the convergent phase (idea selection) of the …

A Pseudo-Haptic Approach To Alleviate Cognitive Fatigue In Virtual Reality Strength Training, Rintaro Ichida, Yuuta Tanaka, Naoto Yoshida

IASDR Conference Series

We investigated two pseudo-haptic feedback techniques for virtual reality (VR) strength training aimed at modulating perceived weight and cognitive fatigue. Both methods visually amplified the motion of a real dumbbell relative to users’ physical movement: a nonlinear transformation that preserved spatial alignment at the start and end of each motion, and a constant gain that uniformly scaled displacement without endpoint consistency. Experimental results showed that the constant gain approach led to greater reductions in perceived weight compared to the nonlinear method, particularly during the early stages of training, while the nonlinear method had only marginal effects. The constant gain technique …

Garner, Patricia C. Wolfe, Sarah Matesic, Katie A. Edwards, Chris C. Wilson, Heidi K. Swanson, Bryan D. Neff

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship

The consumption of invasive, high-thiaminase prey fishes can cause thiamine deficiency, which has been hypothesized to be a major barrier for lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) restoration in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Here, we compared the effects of diet-derived thiaminase on survival and performance-related traits between two strains of lake trout that differ in historical exposure to thiaminase. Juvenile lake trout from the Seneca Lake (higher historical exposure to thiaminase) and Slate Islands (lower historical exposure) strains were reared in a common garden environment and received either an experimental diet containing bacterial derived-thiaminase or a control diet. Six months after the …

The Triangular Interaction Between Dietary Polyphenols, Gut Microbiota, And Metabolic Syndrome, Emily Bayliss Dec 2025

The Triangular Interaction Between Dietary Polyphenols, Gut Microbiota, And Metabolic Syndrome, Emily Bayliss

Senior Honors Theses

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a growing global health concern characterized by peripheral insulin resistance as well as impaired insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome, specifically gut dysbiosis, an imbalance in the gut microbiome, is a critical modulator of the pathophysiology of T2DM. Dietary polyphenols, a diverse group of bioactive compounds that are abundant in plant-based foods, have recently gained attention for their potential to attenuate metabolic disorders through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as through modulating the composition and activity of gut microbes, thereby attenuating dysbiosis. However, the diabetic state …
