Determination Of Strain Patterns Across The Root-Stem Transition Zone In Trees, Kenneth Edward Beezley Jan 2016

Determination Of Strain Patterns Across The Root-Stem Transition Zone In Trees, Kenneth Edward Beezley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Trees are subjected to mechanical stressors, induced via dynamic (wind) and static (gravitational) forces, and must properly acclimate during their lifespan or face premature mortality. Resource allocation as a stress response is vital for tree survival, and can include the shedding of woody parts, adaptive growth, hormonal signaling cascades, and the initiation of energy transfer mechanisms. The strain resulting from stress intercepted by the canopy and transferred throughout the tree is of significant importance, not only for tree survival, but for the safety and well-being of the human population found in close proximity. As trees age and adapt to stressors …

Interleukin-15 Overexpression Attenuates Muscle Fatigue Associated With Murine Eo771 Mammary Tumors, Joseph F. Bohlen Jan 2016

Interleukin-15 Overexpression Attenuates Muscle Fatigue Associated With Murine Eo771 Mammary Tumors, Joseph F. Bohlen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Severe muscle wasting and muscle dysfunction (cachexia) are considered incurable complications associated with a wide variety of chronic diseases. This loss of function and severe wasting causes an increase in fatigue in cancer patients, leading to reduced motivation for daily activities, further reducing prognosis for recovery in these patients leading to a severe increase in morbidity. Recent work from our lab suggests Interleukin-15 (IL-15) induces a pro-oxidative state in the muscle, reducing fatigue and promoting a more oxidative phenotype. One proposed mechanism behind this is the observation that IL-15 promotes mitochondrial biogenesis, lending more mitochondria for oxidative metabolic processes. Therefore, …

Implementation And Evaluation Of Teach-Back As A Pedagogical Method For Delivering Fall Prevention Education To Older Adults In An Inpatient Hospital Setting, Elizabeth Bosley Jan 2016

Implementation And Evaluation Of Teach-Back As A Pedagogical Method For Delivering Fall Prevention Education To Older Adults In An Inpatient Hospital Setting, Elizabeth Bosley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background: In the United States, the most common cause of both nonfatal injuries and accidental deaths for people older than 65 is falls. In the hospital setting, 700,000 to 1,000,000 falls occur annually resulting in increased cost and reduced reimbursement. There exists a critical need to explore potential interventions for effectiveness in reducing both the incidence and severity of falls. Teach-back is a patient education methodology that is a highly recommended safety practice and may be an effective intervention to reduce patient falls in the hospital setting.;Objectives: 1) To increase the use and documentation of a validated patient education methodology …

Experiences Of Parents Of Children Adopted From Overseas: A Thematic Analysis Of Narratives, Ekaterina Anatolyevna Amarando Jan 2016

Experiences Of Parents Of Children Adopted From Overseas: A Thematic Analysis Of Narratives, Ekaterina Anatolyevna Amarando

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Parents from the United States adopt more children from overseas than parents from any other country. There are numerous factors that play a role in the decision to adopt internationally, and most families remain highly satisfied with the adoption outcome (Adoption Institute, 2010). However, families with internationally adopted children face numerous challenges during their adoption journey, and generally report a higher utilization of professional services than biological families (Adoption Institute, 2010). In this study I utilized a qualitative research design to examine experiences of parents who adopted children from other countries. Thematic analysis of family narratives was employed to examine …

Honey bee health and colony collapse disorder (CCD), a term coined in 2006, have been drawing global attention as bees are dying at a rapid rate. The University of Maryland reported that beekeepers across the US lost more than 40 percent of their honey bee colonies during the year spanning April 2014 to April 2015[1]. With seventy out of the top 100 human food crops, which supply about 90 percent of the world’s nutrition, being pollinated by bees [4], this puts our food supply at serious risk!

Formed from a grant from the US Department of Agriculture, the Bee Informed …

The Effect Of Gender Threat On Implicit Sexism And Stereotyping, Shelby Speegle Jan 2016

The Effect Of Gender Threat On Implicit Sexism And Stereotyping, Shelby Speegle

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gender threat occurs in situations in which one is threatened by the possibility of acting like the opposite gender (Vandello et al., 2008) and is most pervasive for men (e.g., “you throw like a girl”). This study examined the question of whether men, after being told they performed like women, would respond with negative implicit evaluations of women. In addition, competence threat (with no reference to gender) was examined to see if it would affect men in the same way. Women were threatened by being told they performed like men, although it was hypothesized there would be no effect of …

Effects Of Electrode Materials On Charge Conduction Mechanisms Of Memory Device Based On Natural Aloe Vera, Zhe Xi Lim, Sasidharan Sreenivasan, Yew Hoong Wong, Feng Zhao, Kuan Yew Cheong Jan 2016

Effects Of Electrode Materials On Charge Conduction Mechanisms Of Memory Device Based On Natural Aloe Vera, Zhe Xi Lim, Sasidharan Sreenivasan, Yew Hoong Wong, Feng Zhao, Kuan Yew Cheong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Resistive switching behaviors in Aloe vera films are being explored for nonvolatile memory applications. A simple structure in which the Aloe vera films sandwiched in between a top and bottom electrode are used. The switching behaviors of the devices in which the Aloe vera film is dried at different temperatures and the roles of top electrode materials (Al and Ag) are investigated. Current density-voltage measurements reveal that filamentary conduction is the dominant conduction process inducing resistive switching characteristics in Aloe vera films. Device with Al-Top electrode requires a forming voltage higher than devices with Ag-Top electrode, due to the tendency …

Solutions For Wellness: Outcome Review And Analysis Of A Healthy Lifestyle Group, Gary Burlingame, Valerie King, Rebecca Janis Jan 2016

Solutions For Wellness: Outcome Review And Analysis Of A Healthy Lifestyle Group, Gary Burlingame, Valerie King, Rebecca Janis

Faculty Publications

Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) experience a notably decreased life span due, in part to a metabolic syndrome linked to psychotropic medications commonly prescribed to SMI patients. Eli Lilly’s Solutions for Wellness (SFW) program was designed to address some of the risk factors (e.g., weight, diet, lifestyle) that exacerbate the metabolic syndrome in SMI outpatients. However, there is limited data as to the effectiveness of the SFW program for hospitalized SMI patients. We replicate and compare SFW outcomes from an inpatient SMI population treated at the Utah State Hospital with previous research that tested an abbreviated SFW curriculum of …

Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908) is an intracellular parasite that can cause ongoing latent infection persisting for the duration of a non-definitive host's life. Affecting approximately one-third of the world's population, latent toxoplasmosis has been associated with neuropsychological outcomes and a previous report suggested an association between latent toxoplasmosis and adult height. Given the large number of people with latent toxoplasmosis and its potential associations with human height, we sought to better understand the association between latent toxoplasmosis and human morphology by evaluating seropositivity for T. gondii and multiple body measures reported in the National Health and Nutrition Examination …

Common Ground: Uniting Archaeology And Secondary Social Studies Curricula, Jeremy Allen Haas Jan 2016

Common Ground: Uniting Archaeology And Secondary Social Studies Curricula, Jeremy Allen Haas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Archaeologists have been attempting to establish stronger connections with communities for several decades. Concepts such as stewardship can be presented to a larger audience, and archaeology can be a valuable tool for public education. Public schools across the nation are struggling to improve with limited resources. Archaeology can provide teachers with inexpensive resources that improve student learning while simultaneously helping teachers meet more rigorous standards. Using historical, archaeological, and cultural resources from the World War II Japanese American internment camp, Amache, I created a new supplementary curriculum that focused on the experience of Japanese and Japanese Americans during that era. …

Gaining S-T-E-A-M: A General Athletic Department Social Media Strategy, Brendan O'Hallarn, Craig A. Morehead, Shana L. Pribesh

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

In the 10 years since the invention of Facebook, social media sites have become an indispensable part of the marketing and communications strategy employed by a broad spectrum of organizations, including university athletic departments. While social media is almost universally used, a review of academic literature suggests the study of deployment of social media resources, and analysis of their effectiveness, is still very much in preliminary stages. Professional literature on social media use is out in front of peer-reviewed research. Therefore, we use Funk’s framework for social media practices as a point of departure, offering a social media strategy specifically …
