Comparison Of Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) Behavior On Tour And Non-Tour Days At Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, Allison A. Farley Jan 2016

Comparison Of Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) Behavior On Tour And Non-Tour Days At Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, Allison A. Farley

All Master's Theses

In this study, I investigated the potential effect of a visitor program on captive chimpanzees’ (Pan troglodytes) behaviors at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest (CSNW) in Cle Elum, Washington. I used focal animal sampling to score behaviors from an ethogram of affiliative, aggressive and abnormal chimpanzee behaviors, as well as foraging and vigilance. During each sample, I recorded the focal’s location within the enclosure and whether he or she was situated in locations that would be in view of visitors (present or not). I analyzed 720 minutes of data from each of the seven CSNW chimpanzees. I tested the hypothesis …

Comparison Of A Body Shape Index And Body Mass Index As Predictors Of Metabolic Syndrome: Nhanes 2007-2012, Rotana M. Radwan Jan 2016

Comparison Of A Body Shape Index And Body Mass Index As Predictors Of Metabolic Syndrome: Nhanes 2007-2012, Rotana M. Radwan

All Master's Theses

A newly calculated anthropometric measurement (A Body Shape Index, ABSI) was introduced as a more reliable index of body composition than waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI). ABSI was reported as a stronger predictor for mortality. Thus far, the relationship between ABSI and Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) has not been studied on a large U.S. population. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to determine whether ABSI is a better predictor of the risk of MetS and its individual risk factors than BMI on a large and diverse sample of the U.S. population using the National Health and Nutrition …

The Waist To Height Ratio Is A Better Anthropometric Index Of Abdominal Obesity And Its Association With The Prevalence Of Diabetes Among Asian Americans, Yu Xiao Jan 2016

The Waist To Height Ratio Is A Better Anthropometric Index Of Abdominal Obesity And Its Association With The Prevalence Of Diabetes Among Asian Americans, Yu Xiao

All Master's Theses

There is limited information about diabetes prevalence among Asian Americans. Diabetes risk factors include abdominal obesity (AO), which can be assessed by measuring waist circumference (WC) or waist-to-height-ratio (WHtR). The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence of diabetes among Asians with non-Asians in the United States and compare WC and WHtR as predictors of diabetes. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-14 was analyzed using SAS 9.2. There were 8,615 adult non-pregnant non-Asians and 1,224 Asians included in this study. Despite a lower prevalence of obesity among Asians compared to non-Asians (12% vs …

Testing The Forage Preference Of The American Pika (Ochotona Princeps) For Use In Connectivity Corridors In The Washington Cascades, Carly Wickhem, Kristina Ernest Jan 2016

Testing The Forage Preference Of The American Pika (Ochotona Princeps) For Use In Connectivity Corridors In The Washington Cascades, Carly Wickhem, Kristina Ernest

All Master's Theses

One of the aims of the Snoqualmie Pass East Project (SPEP) in the Cascades of central Washington is to construct nearly 30 wildlife crossing structures along a 15-mile stretch of Interstate-90. American pikas (Ochotona princeps) are being monitored for the SPEP because they have specific habitat requirements and are poor dispersers. Making the crossing structures “pika-friendly” will encourage these low-mobility animals to use the structures. Recent research suggests that the presence of quality vegetation may help pika populations avoid declines and extirpations, so planting suitable forage within and adjacent to the crossings will be essential. During the summer …

The White-Nose Syndrome Transcriptome: Exploring The Putative Fungal Virulence Genes Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans., Sophia Marie Reeder Jan 2016

The White-Nose Syndrome Transcriptome: Exploring The Putative Fungal Virulence Genes Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans., Sophia Marie Reeder

Honors Theses

White-nose syndrome (WNS) in North American bats is caused by an invasive cutaneous infection by the psychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (P. destructans). In a previous study, we used a dual RNA-Seq approach, which allowed us to gain insight into the gene expression of both the host and the pathogen simultaneously, and we observed differences in P. destructans gene expression that suggest host-pathogen interactions that might determine WNS progression. More recently we compared transcriptome-wide changes in gene expression levels in P. destructans grown on and actively infecting the wing of a bat (infecting pathogen) with P. destructans grown in culture (free …

John Rawls’ Theory Of Justice And Mixed Conception With A Social Minimum Principle, Kevin Wu Jan 2016

John Rawls’ Theory Of Justice And Mixed Conception With A Social Minimum Principle, Kevin Wu

CMC Senior Theses

John Rawls was a political philosopher concerned with social justice, specifically the best way that society could be structured so that individual rights and duties were fairly distributed amongst everyone and division of advantages from social cooperation were optimally determined. He believed that this conception of justice rested in principles that would be agreed upon by free, self-interested and rational persons in a starting position of equality and fairness. The principles of the theory of justice are ones that are meant to enable this group of people to cooperate with each other while recognizing that individuals in the group both …

A New Partner In The Process: The Role Of A Librarian On A Faculty Research Team, Leslie J. Foutch Jan 2016

A New Partner In The Process: The Role Of A Librarian On A Faculty Research Team, Leslie J. Foutch

Collaborative Librarianship

Academic librarians have tremendous opportunity to demonstrate their worth to the institutions they serve. One successful approach is for faculty and librarians to collaborate on a research project; however the frequency of such partnerships has not been readily documented in academic library literature. This paper shows how the addition of an academic librarian to a faculty research team led to a better understanding of how faculty projects operate, and how the process can lead the way for librarians to be seen as valuable research partners in the academic landscape.

Effect Of Direct-Fed Microbials And Enzyme Supplementation In Prepartum Holstein Cows On Colostrum And Calf Immunity, Erin M. Shangraw Jan 2016

Effect Of Direct-Fed Microbials And Enzyme Supplementation In Prepartum Holstein Cows On Colostrum And Calf Immunity, Erin M. Shangraw

Honors Theses and Capstones

In cows, colostrum is composed of several antibodies and nutrients to provide immunity and energy to the calf. Feeding calves high quality colostrum has been shown to improve calf health, leading to reduced mortality in calves and greater milk production in cows. The addition of direct-fed microbials (DFM) to cow diets has been theorized to improve feed efficiency and milk production, with studies showing mixed results. However, few experiments have studied the effect of feeding DFM on colostrum quality. In this experiment two treatments were given, 1) DFM and 2) DFM and enzymes (DFME). Colostrum was …

Designing A Curriculum To Meet The Needs Of Caregivers Of Patients Who Had A Cerebral Vascular Accident (Cva) Living In Local Communities In Zimbabwe, Farayi Kaseke, Amelia Challender, Mary Jane Rapport

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Background: Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA), or stroke, has become an epidemic in Zimbabwe with the incidence rising significantly over the past two decades. Most patients in Zimbabwe who have had a CVA are initially admitted into a hospital for the acute phase of care and later discharged back to the community and into the care of their family. Although caregivers are forced to suddenly take on a critical role in the daily care and rehabilitation of the person who has had a stroke and continues to have disabilities, there is little to prepare someone for these responsibilities at the time …

The Color Of Pain: Blacks And The U.S. Health Care System--Can The Affordable Care Act Help To Heal A History Of Injustice?, Part Ii, Jennifer M. Smith

Journal Publications

The state of Americans' health care has been troubling, especially before health care reform. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is often touted as universal health care, and the initial intention was for the U.S. to have universal health care. However, with all of the compromises involved in its passage, the ACA resulted in comprehensive health insurance reform, significantly increasing the accessibility, affordability, and quality of health care for most, but not all, Americans. The ACA is a substantial step toward universal health care-a near-universal mandate-that may soon provide coverage to all Americans, and even include undocumented immigrants. Americans can find excellent …

Ocean Iron Fertilization And Indigenous Peoples' Right To Food: Leveraging International And Domestic Law Protections To Enhance Access To Salmon In The Pacific Northwest, Randall S. Abate Jan 2016

Ocean Iron Fertilization And Indigenous Peoples' Right To Food: Leveraging International And Domestic Law Protections To Enhance Access To Salmon In The Pacific Northwest, Randall S. Abate

Journal Publications

Ocean iron fertilization (OIF) is a new and controversial climate change mitigation strategy that seeks to increase the carbon-absorbing capacity of ocean waters by depositing significant quantities of iron dust into the marine environment to stimulate the growth of phytoplankton blooms. The photosynthetic processes of these blooms absorb carbon from the atmosphere and sequester it to the ocean floor. OIF has been criticized on several grounds. including the foreseeable and unforeseeable adverse consequences it may cause to the marine environment, as well as the daunting challenge of reconciling several potentially overlapping sources of international and domestic environmental law, which may …

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) consists of a group of associated risk factors for cardiovascular disease and other related chronic diseases. In the U.S. it is estimated that nearly 35% of the adult population have metabolic syndrome. According to National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines risk factors for developing MetS include large waistline, high blood pressure, high triglyceride level, low high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level, and elevated fasting blood glucose level. The goal of this study was to investigate the prevalence of risk factors for MetS among uninsured, low socioeconomic status adult Hispanics in El Paso, Texas. The study population resided …

Antagonistic Interactions Between Aquatic Turtles And Territorial Sunfish, Tara Jane Snyder Jan 2016

Antagonistic Interactions Between Aquatic Turtles And Territorial Sunfish, Tara Jane Snyder

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

When sunfish (Lepomis spp.) breed, parents defend nest sites and are highly aggressive and territorial against conspecifics and other fish and invertebrate species. However, little is known of their possible effects on sympatric turtle species. In this study I examined the relationship between the musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus), painted turtle (Chrysemys picta), pumpkinseed sunfish (.Lepomis gibbosus), and bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) within Lake Wapalanne, Sandyston, New Jersey. My hypotheses were: presence of musk and painted turtle individuals would diminish within the sunfish nest habitats during the breeding period and would revert back to normal numbers of captures post-sunfish breeding; musk …

Evaluation Of Genotoxic And Cytologic Effects Of Environmental Stressin Wheat Species With Different Ploidy Levels, Sefa Pekol, Mehmet Cengi̇z Baloğlu, Yasemi̇n Çeli̇k Altunoğlu Jan 2016

Evaluation Of Genotoxic And Cytologic Effects Of Environmental Stressin Wheat Species With Different Ploidy Levels, Sefa Pekol, Mehmet Cengi̇z Baloğlu, Yasemi̇n Çeli̇k Altunoğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

Drought and salinity induce biochemical, physiological, morphological, and genetic responses in plants. To understand the damage to different wheat species caused by these stresses, we investigated root-shoot growth, cell division, chromosomal aberrations, and nucleolus organizer regions (AgNORs) in root tip cells. Inhibition of root and shoot growth were observed in diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid wheat genotypes after salt and drought stresses. Both stresses had adverse effects on dividing cells in root tips of all wheat species and caused a decrease in mitotic index values. Salt and drought lead to the induction of chromosome aberrations and repression of interphase AgNOR parameters. …

Comparative And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Zinc Transporter Genes/Proteins In Plants, Recep Vatansever, İbrahi̇m İlker Özyi̇ği̇t, Ertuğrul Fi̇li̇z

Turkish Journal of Biology

Zinc is an important catalytic element for more than 300 enzymes and plays a structural role in the stabilization of many proteins. Protein domain analysis showed that identified Zn transporter proteins belong to the ZIP protein family (PF02535). Zn transporter sequences were found to have similar molecular weights (33.1-51.4 kDa) and amino acid lengths (306-478 amino acids) with 5.31-8.92 pI values. Subcellular localization of Zn transporters was predicted as the plasma membrane. They had 6-9 putative transmembrane domains with a variable region between TM-3 and TM-4, which could contain a potential histidine-rich metal-binding domain. Moreover, alignment analysis showed that the …

Effect Of Different Extenders On Motility And Some Sperm Kinematics Parameters In Norduz Goat Semen, Koray Teki̇n, Ali̇ Daşkin Jan 2016

Effect Of Different Extenders On Motility And Some Sperm Kinematics Parameters In Norduz Goat Semen, Koray Teki̇n, Ali̇ Daşkin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Use of computer-assisted sperm analyzers (CASAs) to evaluate sperm fertilizing ability has great importance for the artificial insemination industry. For motility evaluation, different CASA systems and diluents are being used. These assays are poor in predicting sperm fertility, because only the samples with markedly poor quality can be detected. However, there is not a unitary extender worldwide. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the postthaw kinetic parameters of curvilinear velocity (VCL), straight-line velocity (VSL), and average-path velocity (VAP) with two different extenders (skim milk, SM; Tris, TS). Semen was collected twice a week with an artificial vagina from four adult Norduz …
