Landmines In Croatia Pose Threat To Incoming Refugees, News Brief Dec 2015

Landmines In Croatia Pose Threat To Incoming Refugees, News Brief

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

After Hungary formally closed its border with Serbia on 15 September 2015, refugees fleeing conflict in the Middle East, Central Asia and Northern Africa have turned next to Croatia as a gateway to reach countries such as Sweden and Germany. The influx of refugees traversing the areas near the Croatia-Serbia border has raised concerns that refugees will encounter residual landmine contamination in Croatia as they make their way to Slovenia and Hungary. The contamination dates back to the four-year conflict which followed the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 1995. The Croatian Mine Action Centre (CROMAC) estimates that …

Pearls Of Meaning: Preschool Children Respond To Multicultural Picturebooks, Xiufang Chen, Susan Browne

College of Education Departmental Research

Employing a qualitative practitioner research method, this study examined pre-school children's responses to multicultural picture books and gained insight into how pre-school children make meaning about illustrations and textual features that include aspects of culture. The authors explored how multicultural literature can be used to develop cultural awareness and sensitivity among young children. Mem Fox's, Sophie (1994) emerged as a salient text that evoked personal connections and response to complex issues such as cycle of birth, life, and death. We contend that early exposure to multicultural literature contributes to ongoing processes of meaning making and serves as a rich reservoir …

Game-Theoretic Models For Interdependent Security: Modeling, Computing, And Learning, Hau Chan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Due to an increase number of attacks by hackers and terrorists, there has been quite a bit of recent research activity in the general area of game-theoretic models for terrorism settings that aim to understand the behavior of the attackers and the attackers' targets. My thesis is centered on introducing, studying, and applying several game-theoretic models to security. In particular, my doctoral thesis consists of the following components: (1) designing increasingly more realistic variants of defense games; (2) studying computational questions in defense games such as equilibria computation and computational implications of equilibria characterizations, (3) designing efficient algorithms and effective …

Knowledge Extraction From Diverse Biomedical Corpora With Applications In Healthcare: Bridging The Translational Gap, Ritwik Banerjee Dec 2015

Knowledge Extraction From Diverse Biomedical Corpora With Applications In Healthcare: Bridging The Translational Gap, Ritwik Banerjee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A wealth of knowledge in the biomedical domain is available in unstructured or semi-structured data repositories as natural language narratives. Much of this knowledge can provide immediate and tangible benefits in patient welfare and the healthcare industry. Extracting relevant knowledge from these natural language sources and providing them as structured information suitable for immediate real-time consumption in clinical settings is, however, a manual process restricted to human domain experts. As a result, it is expensive and time-consuming. A very real consequence of this is that the journey made by medical " knowledge nuggets" from research publications to patient care settings …

Planning With Transaction Logic, Reza Basseda Dec 2015

Planning With Transaction Logic, Reza Basseda

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Automated planning has been the subject of intensive research and is at the core of several areas of AI, including intelligent agents and robotics. In this dissertation, we argue that Transaction Logic is a natural specification, experimentation, prototyping, and potentially implementation language for planning algorithms. This enables one to see further afield and thus discover better and more general solutions than using one-of-a-kind formalisms that have been traditionally dominating this field. Specifically, we take the well-known STRIPS planning strategy and show that Transaction Logic lets one specify this strategy and several of its far-reaching extensions easily and concisely. In addition, …

Algorithms And Applications In Genome Assembly Using Long Read Sequencing Technology, Hayan Lee Dec 2015

Algorithms And Applications In Genome Assembly Using Long Read Sequencing Technology, Hayan Lee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The first generation sequencing technology represented by Sanger sequencing opened the era of de novo genome assembly. The assembled genome had good quality as a reference but it was very costly. The second generation, so called Next-Gen sequencing, produced tons of short reads in a day with economic cost. However de novo genome projects and other downstream research confronted limited quality. Now third generation begins with long reads sequencing technology and related algorithms with reasonable cost. The quality of reference genomes and downstream research has been recovered. Here we introduce third generation read sequencing technology and span sequencing technology, related …

Measuring Routing Policies On The Internet, Mohammad Haseeb Niaz Dec 2015

Measuring Routing Policies On The Internet, Mohammad Haseeb Niaz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Models of Internet routing are critical for studies of Internet security, reliability and evolution, which often rely on simulations of the Internet’s routing system. Accurate models are difficult to build and suffer from a dearth of ground truth data, as ISPs often treat their connectivity and routing policies as trade secrets. In this environment, researchers rely on a number of simplifying assumptions and models proposed over a decade ago, which are widely criticized for their inability to capture routing policies employed in practice. This thesis makes the following two contributions: Investigating Interdomain Routing Policies. First we put Internet topologies and …

Finding The Right Balance: Security Vs. Performance With Network Storage Systems, Arun Olappamanna Vasudevan Dec 2015

Finding The Right Balance: Security Vs. Performance With Network Storage Systems, Arun Olappamanna Vasudevan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As cloud storage in particular and networked storage in general gain widespread adoption, the biggest concern for customers is security. The concern is well warranted for two reasons. First, the surface area of exploitation and vulnerability is greatly increased with the communication channel and a possibly shared remote server, in addition to multiple clients. Second, when the networked storage server is maintained by a third party, such as a cloud provider, there is a lack of trust on the way data is managed at the server side. In order to minimize the risks while out-sourcing the data management, networked storage …

Engineering High-Performance Parallel Algorithms With Applications To Bioinformatics, Jesmin Jahan Tithi Dec 2015

Engineering High-Performance Parallel Algorithms With Applications To Bioinformatics, Jesmin Jahan Tithi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Since the beginning of the last decade, plateauing of the clock speed of computer processors has forced us to invest more in parallelism — for both hardware and software. This resulted in improvements in computing technologies that have favored parallelism over increased clock speed. Taking advantage of these improvements requires designing algorithms that can leverage parallelism well. In this dissertation, we show how to take advantage of several algorithm design techniques to harness modern heterogeneous parallel architectures for solving problems in bioinformatics efficiently. Our main goal while designing algorithms is to achieve high-performance in terms of running time and scalability. …
