The Information Of Spam, Sawyer C. Anderson Dec 2015

The Information Of Spam, Sawyer C. Anderson

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper explores the value of information contained in spam tweets as it pertains to prediction accuracy. As a case study, tweets discussing Bitcoin were collected and used to predict the rise and fall of Bitcoin value. Precision of prediction both with and without spam tweets, as identified by a naive Bayesian spam filter, were measured. Results showed a minor increase in accuracy when spam tweets were included, indicating that spam messages likely contain information valuable for prediction of market fluctuations.

Collateral Consequences And The Preventive State, Sandra G. Mayson Dec 2015

Collateral Consequences And The Preventive State, Sandra G. Mayson

Notre Dame Law Review

Approximately eight percent of adults in the United States have a felony conviction. The “collateral consequences” of criminal conviction (CCs)—legal disabilities imposed by legislatures on the basis of conviction, but not as part of the sentence—have relegated that group to permanent second-class legal status. Despite the breadth and significance of this demotion, the Constitution has provided no check; courts have almost uniformly rejected constitutional challenges to CCs. Among scholars, practitioners and mainstream media, a consensus has emerged that the courts have erred by failing to recognize CCs as a form of additional punishment. Courts should correct course by classifying CCs …

How Did The Students Cross The Stage? The Relationship Of Demographic Factors On Early Selection Of College Major, Christy Riddle Dec 2015

How Did The Students Cross The Stage? The Relationship Of Demographic Factors On Early Selection Of College Major, Christy Riddle

Dissertations

Student retention is a highly researched topic studied for many decades, but low retention of college students still exists today. As more states move to success-based funding formulas, it is more important than ever for higher education institutions to increase retention efforts (Swecker, 2011). Colleges and universities launch programs trying to combat and improve retention deficits. Research reveals that student engagement, academic advising, demographics, socioeconomic factors, and early selection of major within the first academic year play a role in retention.

The purpose of this study is to determine if early selection of major relates to the demographic factors of …

Building Within Our Borders: Black Women Reformers In The South From 1890 To 1920, Tonya D. Blair

Dissertations

This dissertation examines the reform work of four unsung black women reformers in Virginia from the post-Reconstruction period into the early twentieth century. The four women all spearheaded social reformist institutions and organizations such as industrial training schools, a settlement house, an orphanage, a home for the elderly, a girl’s reformatory/industrial school and a state federation of black women’s clubs. One of the selected women includes Jennie Dean, a former slave from northern Virginia, who founded an industrial training school for African-Americans in post-Civil War Manassas. Dean’s industrial school resulted from her tenacious drive to imbue former slaves with literacy …

What Will The Neighbors Think? Perceptions Of Failure Intolerance On Individual Entrepreneurial Intention In The Rural Midwest, Brock M. Stout Dec 2015

What Will The Neighbors Think? Perceptions Of Failure Intolerance On Individual Entrepreneurial Intention In The Rural Midwest, Brock M. Stout

Dissertations

Entrepreneurship is increasingly considered the most efficacious economic development intervention, but employing research-informed efforts is important. Extensive literature links the perception of a local culture’s intolerance of business failure to extinguishing of entrepreneurial intention in a community. Some research refutes that link. This study investigated the influence of perceived failure intolerance (PFI) on entrepreneurial intention—and the influence of self-efficacy on perceived failure intolerance—in the rural Midwestern United States. The study employed a modified Delphi methodology to analyze the decision-making processes of potential entrepreneurs as interpreted by experts in rural entrepreneurship. The study provides data about the interaction of human capital …

Changes In Familiarity With And Willingness To Take Prep In A Longitudinal Study Of Highly Sexually Active Gay And Bisexual Men, Christian Grov, H. Jonathan Rendina, Thomas H.F. Whitfield, Ana Ventuneac, Jeffrey T. Parsons

Publications and Research

PURPOSE: For gay and bisexual men (GBM), research suggests that familiarity with Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) has been increasing since being approved by the U.S. FDA in 2012. However, it is less clear how willingness to start using PrEP has changed over time. Likewise, some have expressed concerns regarding the potential for risk compensation (i.e., reduced condom use) were one to start PrEP; however, again, it is unclear how these may have been changing over time.

METHODS: We conducted baseline and 12 month assessments with 158 highly sexually active HIV-negative GBM in NYC who were assessed between 2011 and 2014. …

Borrelia Burgdorferi Pathogenesis And The Immune Response, Mary Petzke, Ira Schwartz Dec 2015

Borrelia Burgdorferi Pathogenesis And The Immune Response, Mary Petzke, Ira Schwartz

NYMC Faculty Publications

Borrelia burgdorferi is the tick-borne etiologic agent of Lyme disease. The spirochete must negotiate numerous barriers in order to establish a disseminated infection in a mammalian host. These barriers include migration from the feeding tick midgut to the salivary glands, deposition in skin, manipulation or evasion of the localized host immune response, adhesion to and extravasation through an endothelial barrier, hematogenous dissemination, and establishment of infection in distal tissue sites. Borrelia burgdorferi proteins that mediate many of these processes and the nature of the host response to infection are described.

Sexually Dimorphic Phenotype Of Arteriolar Responsiveness To Shear Stress In Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase-Knockout Mice, Jun Qin, Sharath Kandhi, Ghezal Froogh, Houli Jiang, Meng Luo, Dong Sun, An Huang Dec 2015

Sexually Dimorphic Phenotype Of Arteriolar Responsiveness To Shear Stress In Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase-Knockout Mice, Jun Qin, Sharath Kandhi, Ghezal Froogh, Houli Jiang, Meng Luo, Dong Sun, An Huang

NYMC Faculty Publications

We hypothesized that potentiating the bioavailability of endothelial epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) via deletion of the gene for soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), or downregulation of sEH expression, enhances flow/shear stress-induced dilator responses (FID) of arterioles. With the use of male (M) and female (F) wild-type (WT) and sEH-knockout (KO) mice, isolated gracilis muscle arterioles were cannulated and pressurized at 80 mmHg. Basal tone and increases in diameter of arterioles as a function of perfusate flow (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 μl/min) were recorded. The magnitude of FID was significantly smaller and associated with a greater arteriolar tone in M-WT than …

Landmine Detonates On South Korean Side Of Demilitarized Zone, News Brief Dec 2015

Landmine Detonates On South Korean Side Of Demilitarized Zone, News Brief

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Tensions between North Korea and South Korea rose as a result of the first major exchange of artillery fire in five years. On 4 August 2015, a landmine severely wounded two South Korean staff sergeants patrolling the DMZ.Officials from Seoul accused North Korea of planting three mines near the guard post on the south side of the DMZ, 440 meters (481 yards) away from the demarcation line; officials from Pyongyang denied these accusations. The explosives found were placed in wooden boxes, not unlike mines previously used by North Korea.

Solving Equations (And Systems Of Equations) Under Uncertainty: How Different Practical Problems Lead To Different Mathematical And Computational Formulations, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2015

Solving Equations (And Systems Of Equations) Under Uncertainty: How Different Practical Problems Lead To Different Mathematical And Computational Formulations, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many practical problems are naturally reduced to solving systems of equations. There are many efficient techniques for solving well-defined systems of equations, i.e., systems in which we know the exact values of all the parameters and coefficients. In practice, we usually know these parameters and coefficients with some uncertainty -- uncertainty usually described by an appropriate granule: interval, fuzzy set, rough set, etc. Many techniques have been developed for solving systems of equations under such granular uncertainty. Sometimes, however, practitioners use previously successful techniques and get inadequate results. In this -- mostly pedagogical -- paper, we explain that to obtain …

From Tertullian's Credo Quia Absurdum To Bohr's Crazy Theories: A Rational Explanation Of A Seemingly Irrational Idea, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2015

From Tertullian's Credo Quia Absurdum To Bohr's Crazy Theories: A Rational Explanation Of A Seemingly Irrational Idea, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

At first glance, Tertullian's idea -- that absurdity of a statement makes it more believable -- sounds irrational, maybe appropriate for theology but definitely not for science. However, somewhat surprisingly, a similar idea was successfully used by the Nobelist Niels Bohr in theoretical physics -- an epitome of rationality in science. In this paper, we show that this Tertullian-Bohr idea actually has a simple rational explanation. Specifically, if previous attempts to construct a theory which is consistent with what is perceived as common sense were unsuccessful, this implies that a true theory much contradict common sense -- and thus, the …

Towards Selecting The Best Abstraction For A Patrolling Game, Anjon Basak, Chris Kiekintveld, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2015

Towards Selecting The Best Abstraction For A Patrolling Game, Anjon Basak, Chris Kiekintveld, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When the number of possible strategies is large, it is not computationally feasible to compute the optimal strategy for the original game. Instead, we select our strategy based on an approximate approximate description of the original game. The quality of the resulting strategy depends on which approximation we select. In this paper, on an example of a simple game, we show how to find the optimal approximation, the approximation whose use results in the best strategy.

Mag: Mine Clearance In Lebanon, Sean Sutton Dec 2015

Mag: Mine Clearance In Lebanon, Sean Sutton

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Mines, cluster submunitions, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination plague Lebanon as a result of a 15-year civil war ending in 1990, two Israeli invasions in 1978 and 1982, and the July–August conflict with Israel in 2006. The Lebanon Mine Action Centre (LMAC) identified 2,598 mined areas covering 191,000,000 sq m of land. Following non-technical survey (NTS) and clearance operations, there is an estimated 30,316,080 sq m of suspected hazardous area remaining. Although some cluster munition contamination remains from the 1982 conflicts, much of the contamination is the result of the 2006 conflict with Israel, during which nearly four million cluster …
