Price Co-Movements And Investment Funds, Maryam Sami Dec 2015

Price Co-Movements And Investment Funds, Maryam Sami

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation consists of two chapters, at the first chapter we analyze the rational expectation equilibria of a delegated portfolio model in which two risky assets have completely independent returns and liquidity shocks. The investment decision is delegated to risk neutral managers with reputational concerns. Some managers have perfect information on the assets' returns while others are uninformed and try to infer information from the prices. We show that in equilibrium there are always realizations of the shocks such that the returns are not revealed. In this region, the prices of the two assets exhibit a strong form of co-movement, …

Bayesian Reliability Analysis And Nonlinear System Identification For Complex Particle Accelerator Protection Systems, Prachi Chitnis Dec 2015

Bayesian Reliability Analysis And Nonlinear System Identification For Complex Particle Accelerator Protection Systems, Prachi Chitnis

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is used to study primordial form of matter that existed in the universe shortly after the Big Bang. Enormous energy (72 MJ) is stored inside RHIC in the form of ion beams and superconducting magnet currents during operation. The accelerator Machine Protection System (MPS) is used to safeguard against undesirable energy leakage due to the faults developing in the collider, and needs to be highly reliable. The most crucial parts of MPS are the Beam Permit System (BPS) and the Quench Detection System (QDS). The BPS monitors the health of RHIC …

A New Method For Design Of Geometrically Shaped Structures For Prescribed Electromagnetic Field Distribution, Carlos Manuel Pereira Dec 2015

A New Method For Design Of Geometrically Shaped Structures For Prescribed Electromagnetic Field Distribution, Carlos Manuel Pereira

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The contribution of this research work to the body of existing knowledge is a novel design (inverse) method to compute the distribution of fields when electromagnetic waves interact with surfaces. If given a desired distribution of electromagnetic fields (radiation pattern), the design (inverse) method developed will rapidly allow a designer to determine a unique geometric solution which will provide the desired radiation pattern, which is an inverse problem. The method developed can also be used as an analysis tool to analyze radiating or receiving structures with simple and complex non-linear geometric features. In the extensive literature search provided in this …

High Performance Partition Based Reconfigurable Platform For Multiple Concurrent Applications, Qi Qi Dec 2015

High Performance Partition Based Reconfigurable Platform For Multiple Concurrent Applications, Qi Qi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Reconfigurable architectures, combining the benefits of flexibility and high performance, are suitable for embedded digital signal processing. However, it is critical to bridge the gap between application algorithms and their implementation. Further, low power design is critical, but it is difficult to migrate an existing algorithm into a data-centric application that is represented as a dataflow and to map this to a reconfigurable architecture. Thus, such a reconfigurable platform mapped from application dataflow graphs and an architecture-aware optimization algorithm become necessary. This thesis proposes an efficient algorithm to optimize the clock frequencies of the processing elements in a reconfigurable architecture, …

From €Œun-Dead†To €Œundeath†: Rehabilitating The Figure Of Dracula, Kaitlyn Frakl Dec 2015

From €Œun-Dead†To €Œundeath†: Rehabilitating The Figure Of Dracula, Kaitlyn Frakl

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The primary goal of this thesis is to offer a way of rehabilitating the figure of Dracula by using Victorian and modern death practices to inform our understanding of Stoker’s narrative. The method I propose is to extend Stoker’s antagonist beyond his construction as an “Un-Dead†being lacking complexity into what I am calling the ideology of “Undeath.†Undeath restores the identity of the Un-Dead being, and seeks to legitimatize the being’s current existence. Victorians were hindered from seeing Undeath in the narrative due to the contemporary tension between religious and secular approaches to death, however, modern scholars have the …

Milton's Satan As The Evolving Poet, David Thomas Johnson Dec 2015

Milton's Satan As The Evolving Poet, David Thomas Johnson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Beyond established associations between Milton’s Satan and the poet himself, I argue that Milton’s Satan, specifically in Book Nine of Paradise Lost, is a direct reflection of Milton, his career as a poet, and his precarious position in attempting to create a conclusion to his epic that does justice to the extraordinary narration of pre-fall history in Books I through IX. I will use a psychoanalytic approach in discussing what I believe to be Milton’s overwhelming desire to solidify his own position in the English literary canon, and the anxiety he seems to experience in a state of creative limbo. …

A World Consuming Itself: Posthuman Cannibals After The End Of The World, Joseph Ronald Kampff Dec 2015

A World Consuming Itself: Posthuman Cannibals After The End Of The World, Joseph Ronald Kampff

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis investigates the growing trend in late 20th- and early 21st-century post-apocalyptic fiction to feature cannibalism. I argue that these narratives reimagine the cannibal to reflect today’s global worldview. By comparing contemporary cannibal narratives such as David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas and the Wachowskis’ film series The Matrix to H. G. Wells’s classic novel The Time Machine, I show that today’s cannibal narratives radically destabilize the binary oppositions of (usually Western) civilized humanity and its savage, cannibal-animal others that traditional cannibal narratives tend to underwrite. The traditional cannibal figure has been an essential element in not only the construction of …

Motherhood And Religious Crisis In The English Novel, 1678-1800, Nicole Garret Marie Dec 2015

Motherhood And Religious Crisis In The English Novel, 1678-1800, Nicole Garret Marie

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation contributes to post-secularist histories of the long eighteenth century, its literary contexts, and the political history of women by examining the intersections of feminist and religious themes in narratives about motherhood. In literary scholarship, post-secularism asks us to reassess the importance of religious faith and religious institutions in past societies and their literature. The eighteenth century, long coterminous with Enlightenment secularism, is a particularly crucial moment for revisionist approaches to the literary history of the West. While important work has been done on the religious foundations of early feminism and the political history of motherhood, this study is …

Social Contagion Effects In Intertemporal Decision Making, Michael Thomas Bixter Dec 2015

Social Contagion Effects In Intertemporal Decision Making, Michael Thomas Bixter

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Intertemporal preferences refer to preferences for payoffs that occur at different times in the future. Though prior research has provided substantial information about the intertemporal preferences of individuals, little is known about group or collaborative intertemporal preferences. In the introduction of the current dissertation, we summarize two preliminary studies we carried out that began to investigate intertemporal decision making in a collaborative context. The three experiments included in the current dissertation follow this line of research and seek to gain a better understanding of the psychological and social processes involved in collaborative intertemporal decision making. In Experiment 1, we demonstrated …

Multi-Platform Comparison With Structural Equation Modeling And Errors-In-Variables Models With Random Loadings, Jinmiao Fu Dec 2015

Multi-Platform Comparison With Structural Equation Modeling And Errors-In-Variables Models With Random Loadings, Jinmiao Fu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the rapid advancement of biotechnology, multiple measurement platforms of microbiome abundance are increasingly available. These include the traditional platforms of gene microarray and quantitative PCR, as well as the modern next-generation sequencing technique. Consequently, the evaluation of the consistencies of these platforms has also become an increasingly crucial topic. Classic methods including using the Pearson correlation or the more suitable errors-in-variables (EIV) models to gauge the linear dependency between two platforms. Our group is among the leaders in applying the structural equation modeling (SEM) to estimate the relationships among three or more platforms and to combine these measurements for …

Genetic And Structural Analyses Of Poliovirus Protein 2catpase, Emmanuel Noble Asare Dec 2015

Genetic And Structural Analyses Of Poliovirus Protein 2catpase, Emmanuel Noble Asare

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The specificity of encapsidation of members of the genus Enterovirus of the Picornaviridae family depends on an interaction between capsid proteins and nonstructural protein 2CATPase. In particular, in the context of a chimeric virus, the N252 residue of poliovirus (PV) 2CATPase interacts with VP3 E180 of coxsackievirus A20. PV 2CATPase has important roles both in RNA replication and encapsidation, but in the context of just the poliovirus polyprotein, N252 does not function in assembly. The aim of my study was to search for additional residues near N252 in 2CATPase that are required for PV encapsidation. I predicted a three-dimensional protein …

Nsfw: An Empirical Study Of Scandalous Trademarks, Megan Carpenter, Mary Garner Dec 2015

Nsfw: An Empirical Study Of Scandalous Trademarks, Megan Carpenter, Mary Garner

Student Scholarship

This project is an empirical analysis of trademarks that have received rejections based on their “scandalous” nature. It is the first of its kind.

The Lanham Act bars registration for trademarks that are “scandalous” and “immoral.” While much has been written on the morality provisions in the Lanham Act, this piece is the first scholarly project that engages an empirical analysis of the Section 2(a) rejections based on scandalousness; it contains a look behind the scenes at how the morality provisions are applied throughout the trademark registration process. This study analyzes which marks are being rejected, what evidence is being …

Interaction Of Alu Polymorphisms And Novel Measures Of Discrimination In Association With Blood Pressure In African Americans Living In Tallahassee, Alexis C. Boulter, Jackyn Quinlan, Aida T. Miró-Herrans, Laurel N. Pearson, Nubiana L. Todd, Clarence C. Gravlee, Connie J. Mulligan

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

African Americans are 40% more likely to be afflicted with hypertension in comparison to non-Hispanic, white Americans, resulting in a 30% higher instance of mortality due to cardiovascular disease. There is debate about the relative contributions of genetic and sociocultural risk factors to the racial disparity in hypertension.

We assayed three Alu insertion polymorphisms located in the angiotensin-1-converting enzyme (ACE), tissue plasminogen activator (PLAT), and with no-lysine kinase 1 (WNK1) genes. We also estimated West African genetic ancestry and developed novel measures of perceived discrimination to create a biocultural model of blood pressure among …

Centerville Slough Project, Susie Van Kirk Dec 2015

Centerville Slough Project, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

An extensive cultural resources document for the Eel River Estuary Preserve was prepared in 2014 to identify resources within the initial project area. With new project proposals and an expanded Area of Potential Effect (APE), several additional structures were surveyed. This addendum looked at three barns and a house, none of which will be affected by proposed projects. They were surveyed because they fall within the expanded APE.

Some of the research conducted for the 2014 historic resources document was applicable to the addendum, including land ownerships and newspaper references. For the present report, additional research was conducted in the …

Cyber-Bullying Portrayals In The News Media, Mary L. Alexander Dec 2015

Cyber-Bullying Portrayals In The News Media, Mary L. Alexander

Theses & Honors Papers

Cyber-bullying is a phenomenon that is widely studied. Researches have examined the characteristics of perpetrators and victims, impacts of cyber-bullying on both the victims and offenders, the development and application of law and the development of programs to stem cyber-bullying. Despite a great amount of research dedicated to these aforementioned areas, studies examining the portrayal of cyber-bullying by news media outlets are rare. An understanding of this portrayal is important as the news media is a significant source of public opinions about a vast array of topics in society. As such, the goal of the present research is to provide …

Student Service Members/Veterans Programs In Erie County Colleges And Universities: Analyzing Programs For Removing Barriers And Facilitating Identity Transitioning, William E. Langer Dec 2015

Student Service Members/Veterans Programs In Erie County Colleges And Universities: Analyzing Programs For Removing Barriers And Facilitating Identity Transitioning, William E. Langer

Public Administration Master’s Projects

Student Service Members/Veterans (SSM/Vs) served their nation in times of peace and in war and in doing so, are eligible for various educational benefits. To assist the SSM/V in adapting to their new role as a student and civilian, most postsecondary educational institutions offer services specifically tailored to the SSM/V population in order to support and assist them in completing their academic program. These services could include navigating benefit programs, financial aid, orientation programs and disability services as needed. In this transformative mixed methods study, a content analysis of the public websites of the schools was first conducted to determine …

Snap And Tanf Administration In New York State Counties: Comparing Case-Based, Mixed Methods And Task-Based Processes, Ryan Gadzo Dec 2015

Snap And Tanf Administration In New York State Counties: Comparing Case-Based, Mixed Methods And Task-Based Processes, Ryan Gadzo

Public Administration Master’s Projects

The purpose of this study is to examine the administrative style used in New York State (NYS) counties for administering two needs-based federal programs: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Needs-based federally-funded policies have significant implications for public administration and intergovernmental relations because these programs involve public servants in the determination and delivery of services of federally-mandated programs which states deliver through a variety of models (state, county, or contracting with private or nonprofit agencies). In NYS, counties are given this responsibility. While the numbers of persons receiving TANF has leveled off since the …

Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Ring-Width Variability In The Northern Interior West, R. Justin Derose, John D. Shaw, James N. Long Dec 2015

Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Ring-Width Variability In The Northern Interior West, R. Justin Derose, John D. Shaw, James N. Long

Wasatch Dendroclimatology Research

A fundamental goal of forest biogeography is to understand the factors that drive spatiotemporal variability in forest growth across large areas (e.g., states or regions). The ancillary collection of increment cores as part of the IW FIA Program represents an important non-traditional role for the development of unprecedented data sets. Individual-tree growth data from increment cores were paired with plot-level variables from the inventory to investigate the spatiotemporal growth patterns for Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, common pinyon, and limber pine over the northern portion of the Interior West (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado). Based on dendrochronological theory proposed over 50 …
