Cryptic Speciation In The Acari: A Function Of Species Lifestyles Or Our Ability To Separate Species?, Anna Skoracka, Sara Magalhães, Brian G. Rector, Lechosław Kuczyński
Cryptic Speciation In The Acari: A Function Of Species Lifestyles Or Our Ability To Separate Species?, Anna Skoracka, Sara Magalhães, Brian G. Rector, Lechosław Kuczyński
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
There are approximately 55,000 described Acari species, accounting for almost half of all known Arachnida species, but total estimated Acari diversity is reckoned to be far greater. One important source of currently hidden Acari diversity is cryptic speciation, which poses challenges to taxonomists documenting biodiversity assessment as well as to researchers in medicine and agriculture. In this review, we revisit the subject of biodiversity in the Acari and investigate what is currently known about cryptic species within this group. Based on a thorough literature search, we show that the probability of occurrence of cryptic species is mainly related to the …
Mer Depré, Margaret Orr
Mer Depré, Margaret Orr
Theses
Mer Depré is an experiment to see if the essence of the experience of depression can be captured through film. Inspired by personal experiences, it invites the viewer to enter a world of darkness and anxiety.
The creation of Mer Depré began with sound. A rough soundtrack was used to create the bones of the film before visuals were laid on top. Most of the animation was done using stop motion techniques. When animating, the process was as important as the end result, and many different materials were used to create various effects. The compositing process compiled all of the …

The 18Th-Century Theories Of Reading And Contemporary Cognitive Narratology, Wen Jin
The 18Th-Century Theories Of Reading And Contemporary Cognitive Narratology, Wen Jin
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The 18th century is a crucial era for the rise of the novel in English and the formation of modern conceptions of narrative immersion. Engaging existing scholarship on early modern and modern theories of reading, this paper primarily discusses two issues. First, it traces the discourses of narrative immersion and narrative impact in 18th-century England, bringing together moral philosophy, aesthetic theories, brain science, literary criticism, and scenes of reading from notable 18th-century novels. The second part of the paper concerns the ways in which contemporary cognitive narratology resonates with 18th-century theories of reading, while providing the latter with productive theoretical …

Occurrence Of An Herbicide-Resistant Plant Trait In Agricultural Field Margins, Karla L. Gag, David J. Gibson, Bryan G. Young, Julie M. Young, Joseph L. Matthews, Stephen C. Weller, Robert G. Wilson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Agricultural environments allow study of evolutionary change in plants. An example of evolution within agroecological systems is the selection for resistance to the herbicide glyphosate within the weed, Conyza canadensis. Changes in survivorship and reproduction associated with the development of glyphosate resistance (GR) may impact fitness and influence the frequency of occurrence of the GR trait. We hypothesized that site characteristics and history would affect the occurrence of GR C. canadensis in field margins. We surveyed GR occurrence in field margins and asked whether there were correlations between GR occurrence and location, crop rotation, GR crop trait rotation, crop type, …

A Summary Of Issues Involving Marine Mammals And Highly Migratory Species, John Warren Kindt
A Summary Of Issues Involving Marine Mammals And Highly Migratory Species, John Warren Kindt
Akron Law Review
The conservation and protection of marine mammals is one of many serious problems relating to exploitation of the living resources of the ocean. While other problems, for example the management of fish stocks and the protection of anadromous, catadromous, and highly migratory species, receive a great deal of attention in the Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOS Convention), negotiated by the Third U.N. Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III), the problem of marine mammals is addressed directly in only two provisions. Certainly, varying political and economic interests impede negotiation of a comprehensive international protective regime; …
The Original Understanding Of The Fourteenth Amendment In Illinois, Ohio, And Pennsylvania, James E. Bond
The Original Understanding Of The Fourteenth Amendment In Illinois, Ohio, And Pennsylvania, James E. Bond
Akron Law Review
This article reviews the state ratification debates in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois. Then as now these states were major electoral battlegrounds. In all three states the two parties fielded strong candidates and ran well-organized campaigns. Many of the nationally recognized proponents of the 14th amendment hailed from these states. Those among them who faced re-election were marked men. President Johnson himself made his famous "swing around the circle," defending "My Policy" in major cities in all three states. The President was only the most prominent of the many well-known outsiders who criss-crossed these states in a desperate attempt to influence …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Strategic Defense Initiative Debate, Scott F. March
Akron Law Review
An interdisciplinary framework in which international law is but one element is presented in this article in the hope of lending organization to the complex subject of space weaponization. Seven factors are discussed which strongly influence decision-makers in both the United States and the Soviet Union who are charged with establishing and implementing the military space policies of their respective nations. They are (1) the relationship between the militarization of earth and the militarization of space; (2) the effects of weapon technology and national defense policy upon the use of space; (3) the interrelationship of the international law-making process with …

National Gay Task Force V. Board Of Education Of Oklahoma City, Susan Fitch
Akron Law Review
The National Gay Task Force (NGTF) looked to the courts for relief in challenging an Oklahoma statute which attempted to regulate teachers' speech. National Gay Task Force v. Board of Education of Oklahoma City marks the first time since the beginning of the gay rights movement that the United States Supreme Court has granted certiorari to a case which had homosexuality as its central issue. The result in National Gay Task Force has left both the challengers and the defenders of the Oklahoma statute claiming victory.
The NGTF claims that although the portion of the statute which prohibits teachers from …

Recombinant Dna And The Regulation Of Biotechnology: Reflections On The Asilomar Conference, Ten Years After, John E. Barkstrom
Recombinant Dna And The Regulation Of Biotechnology: Reflections On The Asilomar Conference, Ten Years After, John E. Barkstrom
Akron Law Review
The year 1985 marks the tenth anniversary of the International Conference on Recombinant DNA Molecules held at the Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, California in late February, 1975. The entire field of genetic engineering technology or "gene splicing" is not much older than the Conference itself. Many articles and much discussion have been occasioned by the recombinant DNA debate, including legal symposia held by the Universities of Southern California and Toledo. This article looks back at the events which led to Asilomar, the debate which followed, and some of the legal and ethical problems involved in the debate.

Green Archives: Applications Of Green Construction To Archival Facilities, Sarah Kim
The Primary Source
The primary mission of archives as cultural and administrative institutions is to preserve and make available society's collective memories captured in archival materials for future generations. The development and long-term operation of archives in a sustainable manner are critical to accomplish this mission. Applying green or sustainable construction to archival facilities is one way to increase the sustainability of archives. Green construction methods provide various environmental, social and economic benefits to improve the serviceability of a building during its lifetime after the construction is completed at the site. The Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) defines sustainable construction as …
A Welfare Interdependence Approach To Third-Party Punishment, Eric J. Pedersen
A Welfare Interdependence Approach To Third-Party Punishment, Eric J. Pedersen
Open Access Dissertations
Third-party punishment—the targeted infliction of costs on behalf of another by an unaffected third party—has been demonstrated in several species, including humans. Here I propose that one of the functions of third-party punishment is to deter future harm to victims with whom the punisher’s welfare is interdependent. Additionally, I propose that this function is governed by psychological mechanisms that use internal regulatory variables called welfare trade-off ratios (WTRs) to guide social behavior via their outputs to motivational systems. Specifically, I propose that WTRs are used by the psychological mechanisms that regulate whether witnesses become angry in response to harms imposed …
Novel Mechanism Of Breast Cancer Prevention And Treatment Using Natural Extract Of Pimenta Dioica, Lei Zhang
Novel Mechanism Of Breast Cancer Prevention And Treatment Using Natural Extract Of Pimenta Dioica, Lei Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
Plant-derived dietary compounds have shown potential as chemopreventive and anticancer agents to prolong survival and reduce breast cancer deaths. Lack of specific mechanism of action is the leading concern for adopting these edible compounds as chemopreventive or adjuvant therapeutics against breast and other cancers. The unripe berries of Pimenta Dioica, also called Allspice, are widely used in cuisines worldwide, contain a cornucopia of bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic properties. Limited studies on the potential anticancer compounds present in Allspice prompted us to hypothesize and test potential antiproliferative agents in an aqueous extract of Allspice (AAE). The potential anti-tumor activity of …

Urban Foraging Social Meetups In Philadelphia, Pa, Kristin G. Mcgillis
Urban Foraging Social Meetups In Philadelphia, Pa, Kristin G. Mcgillis
Environment and Sustainability Summer Fellows
Urban foraging is the practice in which city residents gather plants and plant parts from green spaces—such as parks, sidewalks, or yards—to use for a variety of reasons. Research on the practice is in its early stages, with key questions in need of further research, including who participates, why they participate, and how they initially engage the practice. Existing research suggests most foragers consume what they gather for food, however, many also use materials for medicinal or craft-related purposes. Foraging meet-up tours appear to be a popular way for urban dwellers to learn about and engage in this practice. This …

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications
Bacterial biofilms are microbial communities held together by an extracellular polymeric substance matrix predominantly composed of polysaccharides, proteins and nucleic acids. We had previously shown that Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, the causative organism of Lyme disease in the United States is capable of forming biofilms in vitro. Here, we investigated biofilm formation by B. afzelii and B. garinii, which cause Lyme disease in Europe. Using various histochemistry and microscopy techniques, we show that B. afzelii and B. garinii form biofilms, which resemble biofilms formed by B. burgdorferisensu stricto. High-resolution atomic force microscopy revealed similarities in the …

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death in the United States, cost Americans $277 billion annually, and generate serious psychological burdens. As a result, extensive vehicle safety research focusing on the explanatory factors of crash severity is undertaken using a wide array of methodological techniques including traditional statistical models and contemporary data mining approaches. This study advances the methodological frontier of crash severity research by completing an empirical investigation that compares the performance of popular, longstanding techniques of multinomial logit and ordinal probit models with more recent methods of decision tree and artificial neural network models. To further …
My Sisters Myself: Exploring The Health And Wellness Practices Of African American Women, Carmen Alexis
My Sisters Myself: Exploring The Health And Wellness Practices Of African American Women, Carmen Alexis
Theses and Dissertations
African American women contribute disproportionately to disease in the United States. Researchers have repeatedly turned to issues related to poverty, access to medical care, and stress to explain this syndrome, however studies have shown that the disparities persist even in the absence of poverty and impaired access. Stress remains a constant in every discussion of disease in African American women, but what is it that fuels their particular brand of stress and how does it impact the health of African American women? The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the perceptions held by African American women in …

Characterization, Dna Binding And Cleavage Activities Of New Prodigiosin And Tambjamine Analogues And Their Cu²⁺ And Zn²⁺ Complexes, Karen Chichetu
Dissertations and Theses
Prodigiosins and tambjamines are natural compounds from bacterial and marine sources belonging to a family containing a common 4-methoxy-2,2'-bipyrrole core. These compounds have received a lot of interest due to their promising biological activities. Studies have suggested DNA as a potential therapeutic target for the natural prodigiosin and tambjamine due to their ability to facilitate oxidative DNA cleavage in the presence of Cu2+. Based on this we sought to study the metal binding activity of new prodigiosin and tambjamine analogues. A new prodigiosin analogue was synthesized and complexed with Cu2+. This revealed 1:1 complex formation between …
Simulations Of The Angular Dependence Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction, Jacob T. Paul, Matan Peleg
Simulations Of The Angular Dependence Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction, Jacob T. Paul, Matan Peleg
Physics and Astronomy Summer Fellows
In our project we ran computations on a supercomputer to simulate experiments performed on highly excited atoms at μK temperatures. At μK temperatures the atoms are moving slowly so there are essentially no collisions of the atoms on the time scales at which we perform our experiments. In the absence of collisions the atoms exchange energy through long range dipole-dipole interactions. This exchange depends on the distances between and relative orientation of the atoms. The angular dependence between two atoms has recently been studied experimentally1 . We simulate experimentally accessible spatial arrangements to see if the effect of the …

FKBP52 and β-catenin have emerged in recent years as attractive targets for prostate cancer treatment. β-catenin interacts directly with the androgen receptor (AR) and has been characterized as a co-activator of AR-mediated transcription. FKBP52 is a positive regulator of AR in cellular and whole animal models and is required for the development of androgendependent tissues. We previously characterized an AR inhibitor termed MJC13 that putatively targets the AR BF3 surface to specifically inhibit FKBP52-regulated AR signaling. Predictive modeling suggests that β-catenin interacts with the AR hormone binding domain on a surface that overlaps with BF3. Here we demonstrate that FKBP52 …
