The Spectacle Of Black Violence: Historicizing Worldstarhiphop.Com, Caylon Fowlkes Jul 2015

The Spectacle Of Black Violence: Historicizing Worldstarhiphop.Com, Caylon Fowlkes

Media and Communication Studies Summer Fellows

Have you ever watched, and possibly laughed, at videos of Blacks fighting? You’re not the only one. Worldstarhiphop.com was created in 2005; it is an online hub for “everything” in regards to hip hop culture. This includes sports highlights and new rap artists as well as “crazy fights” mainly between Black people. The videos are primarily made by Blacks and exploited by many. The purpose of this project is to investigate the attraction society has to the behavior of black youth. There are many things that contribute to this phenomenon of violence occurring among black youth. I have chosen to …

Intestinal Adaptations Of Male Rats To Endurance Exercise And Diet, Janice Lynn Daniels Jul 2015

Intestinal Adaptations Of Male Rats To Endurance Exercise And Diet, Janice Lynn Daniels

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Carbohydrate absorption may limit the benefits of carbohydrate ingestion during endurance exercise. Intestinal structural and functional adaptations were investigated in response to a vegan Daniel Fast diet (DF) or a Western Diet (WD), with or without endurance exercise training (DFE, DFS, WDE, WDS). Male Long-Evans rats (n = 28, aged 3-4 weeks) were assigned to the two diets and were either exercise trained by treadmill running or were sedentary for the 13 week intervention. Structural parameters significantly affected by diet (p <0.05) include villus height, crypt depths, intestine length and mass. Exercise significantly affected the percentage of mucosa in the proximal small intestine and several histological measurements (p <0.05). Functionally, WDE rats had higher proximal maltase activity (p = 0.04), but did not have higher rates of glucose uptake. A surprising finding is the intestine adapts to endurance exercise by reducing mass while maintaining carbohydrate digestion.

Hegemonic Masculinity And Health Outcomes In Men: A Mediational Study On The Influence Of Masculinity On Diet, Ryan S. Cox Jul 2015

Hegemonic Masculinity And Health Outcomes In Men: A Mediational Study On The Influence Of Masculinity On Diet, Ryan S. Cox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Research has demonstrated that men have markedly worse health outcomes than women and have higher rates of death from all 15 leading causes of death except Alzheimer's disease. Little is known about the cause of this discrepancy, except that in evaluations of lifestyle choices and preventive health factors, men engage in far more health-defeating behaviors than women, including diets significantly lower in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and micronutrients, and higher in fat and cholesterol. One theory proposed to help explain this discrepancy is that of hegemonic masculinity. Hegemonic masculinity is a form of masculine identification associated with cultural dominance and …

United States Trust Co. V. I.R.S., Scott D. Brackett Jul 2015

United States Trust Co. V. I.R.S., Scott D. Brackett

Akron Law Review

During the course of its administration, an estate may receive income that is subject to federal income tax. When, and if, an estate receives such income the executor is faced with the task of filing the estate's income tax return along with a number of related considerations. One of the more important considerations is the allocation of the burden of such tax between the beneficiaries of the estate and the estate itself.

Subchapter J of the Internal Revenue Code provides the mechanism to allocate that burden between the beneficiaries and the estate. Generally, Subchapter J attempts to allocate the tax …

The Gift Of Life: New Laws, Old Dilemmas, And The Future Of Organ Procurement, Juliana S. Moore Jul 2015

The Gift Of Life: New Laws, Old Dilemmas, And The Future Of Organ Procurement, Juliana S. Moore

Akron Law Review

In Ohio, the recent enactment of the required request law has already helped grieving families to grapple with a loved one's death. Here and across the nation, modifications to organ donation statutes may provide the impetus to change the way a seemingly willing, but apprehensive population views organ donation. But the statutes governing this area are only one component of the fascinating concept of "giving life through death." Because a wealth of material already exists detailing narrow aspects of this area, the purpose of this comment is to present the reader with an informative overview of organ donation as it …

Business Ethics, Law, And The Corporate Use Of Laboraory Animals, David Hoch Jul 2015

Business Ethics, Law, And The Corporate Use Of Laboraory Animals, David Hoch

Akron Law Review

This paper will examine, first, the fundamental theories pertaining to animal interests; then the relevant laws and the recognition of animal interests the laws require of corporate laboratories; and finally, how (if at all) these claims to interests for animals impinge upon corporate ethics. Perhaps a consideration of these matters will clarify the validity of the unorthodox proposition that corporate responsibility extends to nonhumans.

Of Flags And Menorahs: The Power Of Individual And Governmental Symbolic Speech, Mark F. Kohler Jul 2015

Of Flags And Menorahs: The Power Of Individual And Governmental Symbolic Speech, Mark F. Kohler

Akron Law Review

The aim of this article will be to explore the nature of symbolic speech, both individual and governmental. Using Johnson and Allegheny County as a backdrop, four themes will emerge from the article. First, both individuals and government speak and speak powerfully through symbols and symbolic conduct. Second, medium-based regulation of individual speech should receive careful judicial scrutiny. Third, unlike individual symbolic expression, governmental symbolic speech is subject to substantial content-based restrictions. Finally, careful distinctions must be drawn between government-initiated symbolic speech and governmental endorsement of individual symbolic speech.

State V. Stewart: Self-Defense And Battered Women: Reasonable Perception Of Danger Or License To Kill, Barbara A. Venesy

Akron Law Review

First, this Note explores the criminal justice system's ineffective response to wife abuse, the law of self-defense, and the impact of battered woman syndrome on the doctrine of self-defense. Then, the Note evaluates the Kansas court's denial of self-defense instructions in view of its previous holdings on quantity of evidence and imminent danger. The remainder of the Note analyzes the unfounded fear that the battered woman syndrome could become an independent form of self-defense and sanction unnecessary self-help. The Note concludes that successful use of battered woman syndrome testimony ensures the woman's right to act in self-defense and restricts only …

The controversy of lead poisoned waterfowl is also discussed, and a more effective conservation measure than steel shot is proposed.

Death Of The Family: What's Become Of The Parents And The Children, Ronald C. Griffin Jul 2015

Death Of The Family: What's Become Of The Parents And The Children, Ronald C. Griffin

Akron Law Review

If something isn't done quickly, America will become the first nation in history in which elderly people enjoy more security than children.

To that end I recommend that family obligations be analyzed in contractual terms. If the law encompasses what courts do with specific conduct, contract law can moderate parental behavior through vehicles such as family counselling. It can sort out family duties and supply legal rationales for resolving family disputes in a constructive way. This article begins with a background discussion - history, literature and insights - then addresses the law and legal analysis.

Ohio Hazardous Material Transportation Act: An Overview, David J. Leland, Steven D. Lesser Jul 2015

Ohio Hazardous Material Transportation Act: An Overview, David J. Leland, Steven D. Lesser

Akron Law Review

On June 24, 1988, in Miamisburg, Ohio, Governor Richard F. Celeste signed into law H.B. 428, (known as Ohio's Hazardous Material Transportation Act, hereinafter referred to as the Act) a comprehensive legislative initiative regulating the transportation of hazardous materials. The signing of the Act was the culmination of a two year effort to solve a problem that Ohioians, and the nation as a whole, became aware of in July, 1986 in Miamisburg, Ohio. The new law provides for: a registration system with a graduated fee structure, pre-notification and route assessments for "ultra-hazardous" materials, and a civil forfeiture system with penalties …

Aequorin Mutants With Site-Specifically Incorporated Non-Natural Amino Acids For Biomedical Applications, Kristen Marie Grinstead

Open Access Dissertations

Light emitting molecules are an indispensable part of detection and reporting in many fields and are employed in a variety of biomedical applications. Bioluminescent light, or living light, from bioluminescent proteins in particular has many beneficial characteristics, including their lack of a need for an outside excitation source and detection at as low as subattomole levels. Aequorin is a well-characterized bioluminescent photoprotein that has found application in in vitro and in vivo studies. Despite the many advantages of aequorin, its application has been limited by the finite number of canonical amino acids restricting the engineering of aequorin. In order to …

A Nonlocal Spatial Model On Continuous Time And Space, Fan Zhang Jul 2015

A Nonlocal Spatial Model On Continuous Time And Space, Fan Zhang

Open Access Dissertations

In this work we studied a nonlocal spatial model on continuous time and space. Based on Levins’ metapopulation framework, we developed a population model with nonlocal dispersal. The dispersal is modeled by an integro-differential equation. In the first chapter, we studied the well-posedness of a single species model. We established the existence and uniqueness of solution, and proved a version of maxi- mum principal as well as comparison theorem. To study the stability of equilibria, we considered an eigenvalue problem and provided an estimation of the eigenvalue. Then we gave the condition of having a stable positive equilibrium, which biologi- …

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Gallic acid (GA), a polyphenol, is widely found in numerous fruits and vegetables, particularly in hickory nuts. In the present study, we found that gallic acid, a natural phenolic compound isolated from fruits and vegetables, had a more potent growth inhibitory effect on two ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR-3 and A2780/CP70, than the effect on a normal ovarian cell line, IOSE-364. These results demonstrated that GA selectively inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Gene expression was examined by ELISA and western blot analysis, and gene pathways were examined by luciferase assay. It was found that GA inhibited VEGF secretion and …

Homozygosity has long been associated with rare, often devastating, Mendelian disorders, and Darwin was one of the first to recognize that inbreeding reduces evolutionary fitness. However, the effect of the more distant parental relatedness that is common in modern human populations is less well understood. Genomic data now allow us to investigate the effects of homozygosity on traits of public health importance by observing contiguous homozygous segments (runs of homozygosity), which are inferred to be homozygous along their complete length. Given the low levels of genome-wide homozygosity prevalent in most human populations, information is required on very large numbers of …

Identifying The American Incognitum: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Science, Religion, And American Identity Of The Early Republic, Sarah Mosher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The science of paleontology developed alongside the emergence of the nation. The paleontological writings of the early relublic, which focused on identifying the mammoth and the mastodon, included more than their scientific contributions. The methods for this thesis include the use of a generative rhetorical analysis on eight paleontological writings published between 1767-1799 by the Royal Society of London, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. This thesis reveals the presence of eighteenth century religious conflicts with science, the rhetorical techniques of the naturalists, and aspects of the American spirit found in the development of …

In 2006, a marked increase in harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena strandings were reported in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, resulting in the declaration of an unusual mortality event (UME) for Washington and Oregon to facilitate investigation into potential causes. The UME was in place during all of 2006 and 2007, and a total of 114 porpoises stranded during this period. Responders examined 95 porpoises; of these, detailed necropsies were conducted on 75 animals. Here we review the findings related to this event and how these compared to the years immediately before and after the UME. Relatively equal numbers among …

Quantitative Study Of Nano To Submicron Scales Intracellular Structural Disorder Using Electron And Confocal Microscopies: Application To Cancer Detection, Hemendra Ghimire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death with over a million people being diagnosed every year. Many cancers eventually result in death because they go undetected in their early stages when they can be cured. The conventional techniques used for cancer diagnostics exhibit limitations in detecting early stage cancer, which has nano-scale structural changes. On the other hand, alcoholism is one of the biggest cause of health problems. This study examines the effect of alcohol in early stage carcinogenesis in the colon and healthy hippocampal cells of mice models by quantifying the structural changes in their nuclei via …
