Maybe I Could Use This Again! Two Ideal Labs Introducing Instrumentation, Sean Bryant, William B. Laing Iii
Maybe I Could Use This Again! Two Ideal Labs Introducing Instrumentation, Sean Bryant, William B. Laing Iii
Faculty Works
Physics lab students are introduced to custom instrumentation using Arduino-like microcontrollers which have allowed us to implement two labs of particular utility for life-science majors. Constructing a fluid circuit using the sponge-resistor model, flow sensors and an LCD display show the current through each section of pipe. The instrument can simultaneously measure and record 18 voltages, which enables us to record high-frequency “snap shots” of a signal generated on an RC-circuit model of an axon. The IDEAL lab collaboration is developing labs that are open, applied to life, and rigorously quantitative.

Numerical Chromosomal Instability Mediates Susceptibility To Radiation Treatment, Samuel F. Bakhoum, Lilian Kabeche, Matthew D. Wood, Christopher D. Laucius
Dartmouth Scholarship
The exquisite sensitivity of mitotic cancer cells to ionizing radiation (IR) underlies an important rationale for the widely used fractionated radiation therapy. However, the mechanism for this cell cycle-dependent vulnerability is unknown. Here we show that treatment with IR leads to mitotic chromosome segregation errors in vivo and long-lasting aneuploidy in tumour-derived cell lines. These mitotic errors generate an abundance of micronuclei that predispose chromosomes to subsequent catastrophic pulverization thereby independently amplifying radiation-induced genome damage. Experimentally suppressing whole-chromosome missegregation reduces downstream chromosomal defects and significantly increases the viability of irradiated mitotic cells. Further, orthotopically transplanted human glioblastoma tumours in which …
Inversion Effects Reveal Dissociations In Facial Expression Of Emotion, Gender, And Object Processing, Pamela M. Pallett, Ming Meng
Inversion Effects Reveal Dissociations In Facial Expression Of Emotion, Gender, And Object Processing, Pamela M. Pallett, Ming Meng
Dartmouth Scholarship
To distinguish between high-level visual processing mechanisms, the degree to which holistic processing is involved in facial identity, facial expression, and object perception is often examined through measuring inversion effects. However, participants may be biased by different experimental paradigms to use more or less holistic processing. Here we take a novel psychophysical approach to directly compare human face and object processing in the same experiment, with face processing broken into two categories: variant properties and invariant properties as they were tested using facial expressions of emotion and gender, respectively. Specifically, participants completed two different perceptual discrimination tasks. One involved making …
Repurposing Celecoxib As A Topical Antimicrobial Agent, Shankar Thangamani, Waleed Younis, Mohamed N. Seleem
Repurposing Celecoxib As A Topical Antimicrobial Agent, Shankar Thangamani, Waleed Younis, Mohamed N. Seleem
Department of Comparative Pathobiology Faculty Publications
There is an urgent need for new antibiotics and alternative strategies to combat multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens, which are a growing clinical issue. Repurposing existing approved drugs with known pharmacology and toxicology is an alternative strategy to accelerate antimicrobial research and development. In this study, we show that celecoxib, a marketed inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2, exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive pathogens from a variety of genera, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Listeria, Bacillus, and Mycobacterium, but not against Gram-negative pathogens. However, celecoxib is active against all of the Gram-negative bacteria tested, including strains of, Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas, when …

Emerging Technology And Perfidy In Armed Conflict, Ian Henderson, Jordan Den Dulk, Angeline Lewis
Emerging Technology And Perfidy In Armed Conflict, Ian Henderson, Jordan Den Dulk, Angeline Lewis
International Law Studies
The rule against perfidy in armed conflict—one of the last echoes of honor and social order of war—is threatened by emerging technologies. Specifically, the employment of emerging technologies has muddied the already thin and grey line between acts which contravene the honor of warfare and legitimate ruses of war. In this article, the authors analyze perfidy, treachery and ruses of war as key concepts of international humanitarian law and consider their application to emerging technologies.
Simulation And Validation Of Radio Frequency Heating Of Shell Eggs, Soon Kiat Lau
Simulation And Validation Of Radio Frequency Heating Of Shell Eggs, Soon Kiat Lau
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Finite element models were developed with the purpose of finding an optimal radio frequency (RF) heating setup for pasteurizing shell eggs. Material properties of the yolk, albumen, and shell were measured and fitted into equations that were used as inputs for the model. When the egg was heated by itself, heating tend to be focused at the air cell to result in a “coagulation ring.” The focused heating near the air cell of the egg prevented satisfactory pasteurization of the egg, but deeper analysis of the simulation results offered a new perspective on how non-uniform RF heating could occur in …

The Need For Judicial Restriction On The Use Of Drug Detecting Canines, William R. Pomeroy
The Need For Judicial Restriction On The Use Of Drug Detecting Canines, William R. Pomeroy
Akron Law Review
The purpose of this comment is to examine these issues, outline the conflicting positions, and attempt to forecast the direction the courts may take in their effort to bring some harmony to this unsettled (and to some, unsettling) area of law. Few people would attempt to deny law enforcement officials the use of this highly effective and relatively unintrusive law enforcement tool. Yet there are those who fear that the unsettled questions concerning limits on the use of this tool may lead to serious abuse, and who raise the specter of unlimited government intrusion should this type of investigatory activity …

Organ Transplant Crisis: Should The Deficit Be Eliminated Through Inter Vivos Sales?, Richard M. Boyce
Organ Transplant Crisis: Should The Deficit Be Eliminated Through Inter Vivos Sales?, Richard M. Boyce
Akron Law Review
In response to what has been characterized as the "last remaining obstacle to transplantation," Senator Warren Hatch introduced a bill on October 20, 1983 which would establish a task force to investigate and make recommendations to Congress about the problem. Hearings and debate on the bill are scheduled to resume with the next Congress. Its future is bleak with the administration opposing it and the budget-cutting axe being resharpened. Regardless of the bill's outcome, the problem of supplying anatomical organs will continue to present a host of moral, political, and most importantly, legal issues which must be resolved if society …
Denial Of Tax Exempt Status For Racially Discriminatory Schools, Bob Jones University V. U.S., Margaret K. Cassidy
Denial Of Tax Exempt Status For Racially Discriminatory Schools, Bob Jones University V. U.S., Margaret K. Cassidy
Akron Law Review
The extent to which the government may deny tax-exempt status in order to further its goal of eliminating racial discrimination is a question of paramount importance. The United States Supreme Court recently addressed this question in the case of Bob Jones University v. U.S., a consolidated action which involved a conflict between two established public policies: racial equality and religious freedom. The Court held that this nation's policy of racial equality overrides any interest that an educational and religious institution may have in promoting racial discrimination.

Reproductive Timing Of Erimystax Insignis (Blotched Chub) In The Flint River Of North Alabama, Bruce Stallsmith, Josh Mann, Candice Allen
Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
Important details of the reproductive ecology of many freshwater fishes of the species-rich southeastern United States are still poorly known. One such species is Erimystax insignis (Blotched Chub), whose range includes the Tennessee River drainage in northern Alabama, USA. To determine timing and patterns of reproductive effort, collections were made monthly of as many as 30 individuals from August 2011 through July 2012 from a 14 km stretch of the Flint River in Madison County, Alabama. Female and male gonadosomatic index (GSI) and ovarian development data indicate that reproductive activity for the species peaks from March through May. Ripe and …

Pegylation And Bioactive Modification Of Pancreatic Islet Surfaces To Enhance Graft Survival In Cell Therapy For Type I Diabetes, Jaime A. Giraldo
Open Access Dissertations
Islet transplantation is a promising therapy for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of the insulin producing beta cells pivotal to regulation of blood glucose. Despite vigorous and often injurious systemic immunosuppression, host inflammatory and immune responses lead to islet dysfunction and destruction over time. PEGylation, the grafting of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to the periphery of cells or cell clusters, has the potential to mitigate inflammation and immune recognition via generation of a steric barrier. While explored as a plausible immunoprotective barrier in previous studies, this dissertation seeks to fully characterize the impact of …

Using Toolkit Activities To Reduce Household Food Waste, Nancy Lo
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Food waste is a significant problem with environmental, economic, social and ethical consequences. Wasting food wastes energy, water, fuel, and land that go into producing, packaging, and transporting food. Additionally, the agriculture-related release of pesticides and greenhouse gases into the air, soil and water makes wasting food an environmental hazard. As much as 40 percent of U.S. food produced for human consumption, which is more than 20 pounds per person per month valued at $165 billion annually, goes uneaten. Worldwide, onethird of food is wasted while the population continues to grow. There are many reasons why Americans throw away food …

Extraction Of Vegetation Biophysical Structure From Small-Footprint Full-Waveform Lidar Signals, Paul Romanczyk
Theses
The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a continental scale environmental monitoring initiative tasked with characterizing and understanding ecological phenomenology over a 30-year time frame. To support this mission, NEON collects ground truth measurements, such as organism counts and characterization, carbon flux measurements, etc. To spatially upscale these plot-based measurements, NEON developed an airborne observation platform (AOP), with a high-resolution visible camera, next-generation AVIRIS imaging spectrometer, and a discrete and waveform digitizing light detection and ranging (lidar) system. While visible imaging, imaging spectroscopy, and discrete lidar are relatively mature technologies, our understanding of and associated algorithm development for small-footprint full-waveform …

The structure, function, and services of urban ecosystems evolve over time scales from seconds to centuries as Earth’s population grows, infrastructure ages, and sociopolitical values alter them. In order to systematically study changes over time, the concept of “urban evolution” was proposed. It allows urban planning, management, and restoration to move beyond reactive management to predictive management based on past observations of consistent patterns. Here, we define and review a glossary of core concepts for studying urban evolution, which includes the mechanisms of urban selective pressure and urban adaptation. Urban selective pressure is an environmental or societal driver contributing to …

Much effort has gone into developing fluid biopsies of patient peripheral blood for the monitoring of metastatic cancers. One common approach is to isolate and analyze tumor cells in the peripheral blood. Widespread clinical implementation of this approach has been hindered by the current choice of targeting epithelial markers known to be highly variable in primary tumor sites. Here, we review current antigen-based tumor cell isolation strategies and offer biological context for commonly studied cancer surface markers. Expression levels of the most common markers are quantitated for three breast cancer and two non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) lineage models. These …

Amikacin Concentrations Predictive Of Ototoxicity In Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis Patients, Chawangwa Modongo, Jotam G. Pasipanodya, Nicola M. Zetola, Scott M. Williams
Dartmouth Scholarship
Aminoglycosides, such as amikacin, are used to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. However, ototoxicity is a common problem and is monitored using peak and trough amikacin concentrations based on World Health Organization recommendations. Our objective was to identify clinical factors predictive of ototoxicity using an agnostic machine learning method. We used classification and regression tree (CART) analyses to identify clinical factors, including amikacin concentration t
hresholds that pre- dicted audiometry-confirmed ototoxicity among 28 multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis patients in Botswana. Amika- cin concentrations were measured for all patients. The quantitative relationship between predictive factors and the probability of ototoxicity were then identified using …
Addressing Therapeutic Options For Ebola Virus Infection In Current And Future Outbreaks, Azizul Haque, Didier Hober, Joel Blondiaux
Addressing Therapeutic Options For Ebola Virus Infection In Current And Future Outbreaks, Azizul Haque, Didier Hober, Joel Blondiaux
Dartmouth Scholarship
Ebola virus can cause severe hemorrhagic disease with high fatality rates. Currently, no specific therapeutic agent or vaccine has been approved for treatment and prevention of Ebola virus infection of humans. Although the number of Ebola cases has fallen in the last few weeks, multiple outbreaks of Ebola virus infection and the likelihood of future exposure highlight the need for development and rapid evaluation of pre- and postexposure treatments. Here, we briefly review the existing and future options for anti-Ebola therapy, based on the data coming from rare clinical reports, studies on animals, and results from in vitro models. We …

I was fortunate to grow up near New Orleans, Louisiana, a city overflowing in culture and history. Growing up there taught me about the influence of architecture on a place and how it comes into existence out of the surrounding context. Memphis, Tennessee, like New Orleans, is a city rich in culture and history, but due that every place that makes up the earth’s landscape is different in some way, Memphis is another city along the Mississippi River with unique features that set it apart from other places around the globe. The thesis investigates those unique features and how architecture …

The Role Of Motivation In Second Language Acquisition: The Critical Constructs Of L2 Motivation, Nicholas Cross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
L2 motivation, as it has been defined in Robert Gardner's composite construct of the integrative motive, has been determined to be essential in the acquisition of a second language. Though some modern researchers have reconceptualized the construct, they have nonetheless reaffirmed its critical components through their own studies. This study explored the phenomenological orientation of the perception of the importance of L2 motivation as understood my 20 ESL teachers with at least three years of teaching experience through four questions: 1. How important to student language learning success (proficiency) do experienced ESL teachers consider motivation to be? 2. What are …

The breakdown of the intestinal barrier is a common manifestation of many diseases. Recent evidence suggests that vitamin D and its receptor VDR may regulate intestinal barrier function. Claudin-2 is a tight junction protein that mediates paracellular water transport in intestinal epithelia, rendering them "leaky". Using whole body VDR(-/-) mice, intestinal epithelial VDR conditional knockout (VDR(ΔIEC)) mice, and cultured human intestinal epithelial cells, we demonstrate here that the CLDN2 gene is a direct target of the transcription factor VDR. The Caudal-Related Homeobox (Cdx) protein family is a group of the transcription factor proteins which bind to DNA to regulate the …
