An Assessment Of Supervisory Well-Being In A Statewide Guardian Ad Litem Program, David K. Pooler, Johnny Jones Jan 2014

An Assessment Of Supervisory Well-Being In A Statewide Guardian Ad Litem Program, David K. Pooler, Johnny Jones

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

Guardian ad Litem programs recruit, train, and supervise volunteers who are court-appointed to represent and advocate for the best interests of children in family court proceedings involving allegations of abuse or neglect. This manuscript presents the results of an assessment of supervisory well-being. We assessed 81 supervisors on four measures of well-being and presented a staff development workshop to discuss the findings. The assessment found that Guardian ad Litem supervisors had less social support, lower self-esteem, stronger caregiving identities, and more distress than a comparison group of social workers. We discuss the salience of leadership and supervisory support in promoting …

Institutional Response To The Changing Legal Environment Regarding Student Safety: A Multi-Campus Case Study, Joy Blanchard Jan 2014

Institutional Response To The Changing Legal Environment Regarding Student Safety: A Multi-Campus Case Study, Joy Blanchard

Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice

Confusion regarding liability for student safety and whether federal regulations prohibit information sharing have become a concern on campuses. Do current policies mitigate liability yet still serve the best interest of students? Based on interviews of nearly 30 administrators at three campuses in 2008 and 2011, this case study examines the legal considerations used when responding to such concerns, particularly alcohol and mental health. Organizational capacity and culture structure are discussed; recommendations for practice are provided.

Foreword: Special Issue Dedicated To Legal Issues In Higher Education, Joy Blanchard

Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice

It is undeniable that legal issues are becoming more prevalent in the day-to-day operations of colleges and universities, as well as among policymakers and lawmakers. The manuscripts in this special issue illustrate the need for all those in higher education to become more aware of the changing legal environment and concomitant regulatory requirements, to educate top-down among those working with students, and for the higher education legal community to begin examining these issues from a broader lens and incorporate the scholarship of policy and organizational change to study the influence of the law on a broader level. This special issue …

Ethical Leadership In The Age Of Apology, Craig E. Johnson, Paul Shelton Jan 2014

Ethical Leadership In The Age Of Apology, Craig E. Johnson, Paul Shelton

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The growing importance of public apology makes forgiveness seeking a critical responsibility for ethical leaders. Leaders must offer apologies on behalf of themselves (in their roles as moral people) and on behalf of the organizations they lead (in their roles as moral managers). Morally satisfying apologies adequately acknowledge offenses, express remorse, offer explanations, and make reparations for damages. The apologies of disgraced professional cyclist Lance Armstrong and General Motors CEO Mary Barra demonstrate how incomplete apologies can undermine ethical leadership. Armstrong’s apology did little to atone for his failings as a moral person. In her role as a moral manager, …

Love As A Replacement For Fear In The Workplace, Debby Thomas Jan 2014

Love As A Replacement For Fear In The Workplace, Debby Thomas

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Fear is routinely used in organizations and interpersonal relationships as a source of motivation. Some research supports the use of fear to motivate employees to work and to change. However, fear has long lasting negative effects that outweigh the motivation that it produces. This paper proposes and supports the notion of love as a central motivator in place of fear. Inner texture exegesis of 1 John 4:18, along with recent research on love in organizations, supports the move from fear to love. Love produces long lasting effects of inspiration and heart level motivation, increased creativity and effectiveness, and a release …

Utilization Review Software: The Impact On Productivity And Structural Empowerment In Case Management Nurses In An Acute Care Setting, Kimberly Frazier

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) seeks to achieve cost control by implementing aggressive cost containment mechanisms for an exploding Medicare population. One such mechanism is utilization review, which is employed to limit reimbursement of medical care that is determined to not be medically necessary. The CMS Conditions of Participation mandate that all hospitals determine whether a patient qualifies for an Inpatient or Observation stay. Utilization Review Specialist (UR) nurses were given the Conditions of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire II (CWEQ-II), Organizational Relationship Scale II (ORS-II), and the Job Activity Scale II (JAS II), six months after McKesson InterQual software …

Organizational Fields, Transnational Business Governance Interactions And The Diffusion Of Csr, Melanie Coni-Zimmer Jan 2014

Organizational Fields, Transnational Business Governance Interactions And The Diffusion Of Csr, Melanie Coni-Zimmer

Transnational Business Governance Interactions Working Papers

The paper analyzes the process of global diffusion of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the oil industry and how interactions between different actors have contributed to this outcome. It starts from the empirical puzzle that CSR has spread globally among transnational corporations since the mid 1990s (diffusion of CSR as a dependent variable). To explain this phenomenon, the paper presents a theoretical argument based on insights from sociological neo-institutionalism. It uses the concept of organizational fields as social spaces where organizations interact with one another. The structuration of an organizational field leads to processes of homogenization among the organizations belonging …

Shedding Gender Stigmas: Work-Life Balance Equity In The 21st Century, Erica M. Southworth Jan 2014

Shedding Gender Stigmas: Work-Life Balance Equity In The 21st Century, Erica M. Southworth

Faculty Creative and Scholarly Works

The gender stigma of work-life balance (WLB) policies as concessions for mothers and female caregivers originated with the push by the Women’s Movement for gender workplace equity in the late 20th century. Unfortunately, this perception continues in the 21st century and retains the additional stigma of employee participation in these policies–—regardless of gender–—as a detrimental career move. Thus, home and work responsibilities for professionals of all genders who desire more occupational flexibility remain unreconciled. Despite this dominant national and international outlook, this article encourages new century organizations and profes- sionals to reject the traditional perception of occupational inequity through gender- …

A Review Of Business Communication Under The Leadership Function, Clive Muir Jan 2014

A Review Of Business Communication Under The Leadership Function, Clive Muir

Faculty Publications

An effective way to perpetuate an academic discipline is to identify and to define its intellectual and historical roots, then to set such roots in the foundation textbooks and courses of the discipline. In that regard, Business Communication still struggles to establish its roots when compared to other disciplines in business schools, particularly Management. For this study, we undertook an extensive review of significant scholarly works on Business Communication as a discipline. We discovered there are prevalent themes in the broader context of rhetoric, technology, culture, dissemination, and impression; and this was confirmed by our examining the tables of contents …

A Multidisciplinary Examination Of The Decision-Making Process Used By Designers, Jill E. Stefaniak, Monica W. Tracey Jan 2014

A Multidisciplinary Examination Of The Decision-Making Process Used By Designers, Jill E. Stefaniak, Monica W. Tracey

Administrative and Organizational Studies

Design-thinking is an abductive and participatory process in which designers are required to manage constraints, generate solutions, and follow project timelines in order to complete project goals. This exploration study sought to look at how designers in various disciplinary fields approach design projects. Designers were asked to describe a project and a decision that they had to make. Decisions were analyzed to determine whether they were ready-made versus custommade solutions and the process by which the designers arrived at the decisions was categorized as idea-imposition or discovery. Results indicated that designers work with multiple constraints while designing and the majority …

Impact Of Teacher Attitude And Urbanicity Through The Implementation Of Positive Behavior Support Programming, Theodore Caleris Jan 2014

Impact Of Teacher Attitude And Urbanicity Through The Implementation Of Positive Behavior Support Programming, Theodore Caleris

ETD Archive

One of the major questions that both urban and non-urban public school districts are faced with is the relationship between the predictors of school climate, student behavior, staff perceptions and the influence these variables have on school climate. School districts are under public scrutiny to produce positive achievement results for all students. Much research suggests that schools that are considered urban are generally considered unsafe, unproductive and unable to produce students that are competitive in a 21st century global economy. In the major urban centers, student populations are decreasing, flooding the first-ring school districts. First-ring school districts are the individual …

Leadership And Management Training In The North Carolina Judicial System: An Examination Of Identified Need, James E. Hardin Jr. Jan 2014

Leadership And Management Training In The North Carolina Judicial System: An Examination Of Identified Need, James E. Hardin Jr.

Duke Law Master of Judicial Studies Theses

The purpose of this paper is to ask whether North Carolina public service lawyers and judges believe that their judicial districts perform with maximum efficiency or whether there could be functional improvement with leadership and management training for system leaders, and with the perceived need of such training, as articulated by these professionals, what a general training model might look like. A brief examination of the institutionally provided leadership and management training offered to system leaders shows sparse resources are expended to develop leaders and train them so that they have the skills to direct individual organizations and change the …

Making An Impact: New Directions For Arts And Humanities Research, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2014

Making An Impact: New Directions For Arts And Humanities Research, Ellen Hazelkorn

Articles

The severity of the global economic crisis has put the spotlight firmly on measuring academic and research performance and productivity, and assessing its contribution, value, impact and benefit. While traditionally, research output and impact was measured by peer-publications and citations, there is increased emphasis on a “market-driven approach”, which favours the bio-, medical and technological sciences, and helped reinforce a disciplinary hierarchy in which arts and humanities research (A&HR) has struggled for attention. This article charts the changing policy environment across Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway. It draws on evidence from the HERAVALUE project which studied how different stakeholders value …

The Unfolding Of A Professional Learning Community, Carol Ann Sharicz, P. Michael Lees Jan 2014

The Unfolding Of A Professional Learning Community, Carol Ann Sharicz, P. Michael Lees

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

This study focuses on the emergence of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in a new international school in southern China with particular emphasis on the views of participants. Using a cross-sectional survey given to the founding faculty, repsondents provided rich qualitative data from which themes were gleaned about the emergence of distinct cultures in these developing PLCs. Dynamic systems operating at micro- and macro-levels in the initial stages of a newly formed PLC were discovered that have an impact on group development and the larger school culture. Practical considerations that may help administrators, teachers, and teacher-leaders in initializing the conditions for …

Attending To Small Talk In The Classroom: An Issue Of Answerability/ Responsibility, Carmen N. Veloria Jan 2014

Attending To Small Talk In The Classroom: An Issue Of Answerability/ Responsibility, Carmen N. Veloria

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

Education, as a field, is inherently political, ideological, and contextual (Freire, 1970). As a result, there are no easy answers to address the myriad of highly contestable educational issues that arise as part of the daily classroom discourse. Educators can find themselves at a los for words when it comes to providing clear cut answers given the number of highly polarizing stances, comments, and opinions that elicit strong student and teacher responses. Yet, in the context of the classroom space, the teacher holds a lot of power, which must be coupled with an ethical responsiveness to student engagement, participation, and …

Impact Of Nurse Managers' Leadership Styles On Staff Nurses' Intent To Turnover, Joseph Warren L. Perez

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Nurse Managers have the unenviable responsibility of ensuring that nursing staff are engaged and perform their duties to the best of their abilities. Maintaining an environment conducive to maximizing nurses' potentials resulting in retention may be a by-product of an effective leadership style. The purpose of this study was to determine whether nurse managers' leadership styles have an impact on nurses' intent to turnover. Nurse Managers with more than one year of management experience were asked to complete the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X). The 45-item questionnaire rates the participant's leadership style based on the answers provided. Results were then compared …

Motivations Of Social Entrepreneurs: Blurring The Social Contribution And Profits Dichotomy, Karla Aileen Boluk, Ziene Mottiar Jan 2014

Motivations Of Social Entrepreneurs: Blurring The Social Contribution And Profits Dichotomy, Karla Aileen Boluk, Ziene Mottiar

Articles

Research has typically identified social entrepreneurs as characteristically superior to conventional entrepreneurs as they are motivated by making a contribution to society rather than by profits. Yet, few published papers investigate the motives of social entrepreneurs and explore if there are indeed any additional motivations aside from community interests. The aim of this study is to empirically investigate the additional motives, aside from the social interests that motivate social entrepreneurs. This paper does so by using an inductive approach and specifically carrying out a re-examination of two pieces of research examining social entrepreneurship that were carried out independently by the …
