A Method For Evaluating Library Liaison Activities In Small Academic Libraries, Jonathan Miller Jan 2014

A Method For Evaluating Library Liaison Activities In Small Academic Libraries, Jonathan Miller

Faculty Publications

This article presents a practical method for formative, self-reflective assessment of the liaison activities of individual librarians and to evaluate liaison activities in general. Many libraries evaluate their liaison programs, but few evaluate the effectiveness of individual librarians’ efforts within the program.

Librarians of Rollins College redefined and re-branded their liaison program as “Your Librarian.” As part of this effort, the author surveyed the faculty and assessed the program and the effectiveness of individual librarians. The author outlines the liaison responsibilities, the survey instrument, and how the results are analyzed and used in a process of continuous reflective improvement for …

Triple Bottom Line Accounting (TBLA) refers to a method of measuring the economic, environmental, and community service impacts of an organization rather than the traditional practice of measuring just the financial bottom line. This chapter explores TBLA from a historical point-of-view; offers examples in higher education and discusses the implications for academic libraries. It concludes with ideas for the implementation of TBLA in libraries.

Critical Spaces: Processes Of Othering In British Institutions Of Higher Education, Aretha Phiri Jan 2014

Critical Spaces: Processes Of Othering In British Institutions Of Higher Education, Aretha Phiri

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Global recession and the economic crisis have affected contemporary British society in predictable ways. But this age of austerity has also unveiled the continued sinister machinations of whiteness. While not necessarily homogeneous, austerity rhetoric, as it is currently conventionally deployed, works to perpetuate white masculinist privilege and further entrenches the normative value of whiteness, while simultaneously masking and marginalizing those ethnic minority populations traditionally othered from mainstream sociopolitical discourse. More specifically, recent austerity measures adversely affect the situation of women and the future of feminist theory and practice in British higher education. This paper investigates and problematizes the deployment of …

Protocol For Culturally Responsive Organizations, Ann Curry-Stevens, Marie-Elena Reyes, Coalition Of Communities Of Color

Center to Advance Racial Equity Publications and Reports

Communities of color have long been marginalized in mainstream service delivery – invisible in terms of their access to resources and services, the adequacy of such services, and in the types of interventions available to members of the community. When available, organizations have been ripe with inequitable outcomes. Today, greater attention to racial equity exists, with local leaders of color having been able to leverage influence to ensure that stronger accountability exists among mainstream organizations in terms of how well communities of color are served, with heightened emphasis on the cultural responsiveness of the entire organization. At the request of …

Crossing The Tax Code's For-Profit/Nonprofit Border, Susannah Camic Tahk Jan 2014

Crossing The Tax Code's For-Profit/Nonprofit Border, Susannah Camic Tahk

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

The federal tax code erects and enforces a firm border between forprofit and nonprofit organizations. Multiple provisions of the code monitor the boundaries of the tax-exempt, or nonprofit, sector to ensure that no nonprofit organization slips across the border to become a forprofit organization. Other code provisions restrict entry into the taxexempt sector by for-profit organizations. Despite serious legal impediments, however, organizations on both sides of the boundary have increasingly found means by which to cross the border. Arrangements such as corporate social responsibility, for-profit philanthropy, and social enterprise illustrate this recent trend. Through these arrangements, forprofit organizations are beginning …

Teacher Evaluation, Development And Improvement, Mary K. Barden Jan 2014

Teacher Evaluation, Development And Improvement, Mary K. Barden

Seminar Research Paper Series

Teacher evaluation has become the focal point for education reform and improvement of U.S. schools over the last several years. At the center of the debate is the primary function of teacher performance management systems. This paper argues that teacher performance management systems which focus on the function of development and improvement will be most effective. Current teacher evaluation systems are examined using the transtheoretical model for behavioral change and examine which evaluation systems create the environment for teacher behavioral change that will be most successful. Ultimately, an organizational and educational culture of trust and support is necessary for the …

Teacher Evaluation And The Problem Of Professional Development, Mark A. Smylie Jan 2014

Teacher Evaluation And The Problem Of Professional Development, Mark A. Smylie

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

During the past 10 to 15 years, nearly every state and school district across the nation has begun to dramatically overhaul their evaluation systems for teachers. Such evaluation systems are ultimately aimed at improving teachers’ instructional practices. However, the evidence on the efficacy and effectiveness of these systems is weak and equivocal at best. One of the major factors associated with the lack of impact of these systems is the troublesome relationship between evaluation and professional development – the opportunities for teachers to learn and improve their practice in response to and beyond the process of evaluation itself. Policies governing …
