Big Data And The Transparency Debate, Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

As its name suggests, “big data” is huge. The meme refers to the collection and analysis of vast data sets collected everywhere in the digital domain from web searches to social network communications, to Internet advertising, to even the numerous digital sensors integrated into our daily lives. Paired with increasingly sophisticated computing intelligence, the predictive power of big data has caused data to become an indispensible asset for businesses and the government. Generally, businesses use big data to target potential customers while the government uses data to monitor and enforce governmental and national security policies. Omnipresent data-mining algorithms as well …

Privacy policies are everywhere. Nearly every website you visit has one, detailing what information the site will collect from you and how it is allowed to use that data. The idea is that the privacy policy will serve as notice to the user as to what using the website means for the user’s privacy. But have you ever read a privacy policy? Would you ever do it again? The fact is, most people ignore privacy policies altogether, clicking “I agree” to continue on using the site.

Benefits Of Exercise Intervention In Reducing Neuropathic Pain, John L. Dobson, James L. Mcmillan, Li Li

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Peripheral neuropathy is a widespread and potentially incapacitating pathological condition that encompasses more than 100 different forms and manifestations of nerve damage. The diverse pathogenesis of peripheral neuropathy affects autonomic, motor and/or sensory neurons, and the symptoms that typify the condition are abnormal cutaneous sensation, muscle dysfunction and, most notably, chronic pain. Chronic neuropathic pain is difficult to treat and is often characterized by either exaggerated responses to painful stimuli (hyperalgesia) or pain resulting from stimuli that would not normally provoke pain (allodynia). The objective of this review is to provide an overview of some pathways associated with the development …

The Effect Of Active Video Games By Ethnicity, Sex And Fitness: Subgroup Analysis From A Randomised Controlled Trial, Louise Foley, Yannan Jiang, Cliona Ni Mhurchu, Andrew Jull, Harry Prapavessis, Anthony Rodgers, Ralph Maddison

Paediatrics Publications

Background: The prevention and treatment of childhood obesity is a key public health challenge. However, certain groups within populations have markedly different risk profiles for obesity and related health behaviours. Well-designed subgroup analysis can identify potential differential effects of obesity interventions, which may be important for reducing health inequalities. The study aim was to evaluate the consistency of the effects of active video games across important subgroups in a randomised controlled trial (RCT).Findings: A two-arm, parallel RCT was conducted in overweight or obese children (n = 322; aged 10-14 years) to determine the effect of active video games on body …

Examination Of Different Accelerometer Cut-Points For Assessing Sedentary Behaviors In Children, Youngwon Kim, Jung-Min Lee, Bradley P. Peters, Glenn A. Gaesser, Gregory J. Welk

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Background: Public health research on sedentary behavior (SB) in youth has heavily relied on accelerometers. However, ithas been limited by the lack of consensus on the most accurate accelerometer cut-points as well as by unknown effectscaused by accelerometer position (wrist vs. hip) and output (single axis vs. multiple axes). The present study systematicallyevaluates classification accuracy of different Actigraph cut-points for classifying SB using hip and wrist-worn monitors andestablishes new cut-points to enable use of the 3-dimensional vector magnitude data (for both hip and wrist placement).
Methods: A total of 125 children ages 7–13 yrs performed 12 randomly selected …

Faculty Publications

Introduction

Effective strategies are needed to reach and treat people who lack awareness of or have uncontrolled hypertension. We used data from a community-based participatory research initiative, Hub City Steps, to quantify the prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension and determine the relationship between hypertension status at baseline and postintervention improvements in blood pressure and health-related quality of life.

Methods

Hub City Steps was a 6-month preintervention–postintervention lifestyle intervention targeting hypertension risk factors. Outcome measures were collected at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. Generalized linear mixed models were used to test for effects by time and hypertension status.

Exclusion Performance In Dwarf Goats (Capra Aegagrus Hircus) And Sheep (Ovis Orientalis Aries), Christian Nawroth, Eberhard Von Borell, Jan Langbein

Learning Ability Collection

Using a comparative approach, we investigated the ability of dwarf goats and sheep to use direct and indirect information about the location of a food reward in an object-choice task. Subjects had to choose between two cups with only one covering a reward. Before making a choice, subjects received information about the baited (direct information) or nonbaited cup (indirect information). Both goats and sheep were able to use direct information (presence of food) in the object choice task. After controlling for local enhancement, we found that goats rather than sheep were able to use indirect information (i.e., the absence of …

Multisensory Integration And Behavioral Plasticity In Sharks From Different Ecological Niches, Jayne M. Gardiner, Jelle Atema, Robert E. Hueter, Philip J. Motta

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

The underwater sensory world and the sensory systems of aquatic animals have become better understood in recent decades, but typically have been studied one sense at a time. A comprehensive analysis of multisensory interactions during complex behavioral tasks has remained a subject of discussion without experimental evidence. We set out to generate a general model of multisensory information extraction by aquatic animals. For our model we chose to analyze the hierarchical, integrative, and sometimes alternate use of various sensory systems during the feeding sequence in three species of sharks that differ in sensory anatomy and behavioral ecology. By blocking senses …

Cholesterol Oxidation Products In Stored Egg Powder, Jonathan Swindler, Dr. Michelle Lloyd

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Cholesterol Oxidation Products (COPs) are a family of 27-carbon cholesterol oxidation derivatives that are formed from the auto-oxidation of cholesterol. They can result in food from high-temperature processing and storage. COPs have a variety of cytotoxic effects and are believed to be involved with major chronic diseases including atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative processes, diabetes, and kidney failure (Sottero and others 2007).

Microbial Degradation Of Folic Acid In Micronutrient Fortified Corn Masa, Brandon Jahner, Dr. Michael Dunn Apr 2014

Microbial Degradation Of Folic Acid In Micronutrient Fortified Corn Masa, Brandon Jahner, Dr. Michael Dunn

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Pregnant women who consume the recommended micronutrient level of folic acid can reduce the incidence of newborn neural tube defects (NTD), like spina bifida and ancelephthy, by up to 70% (Yang et al., 2002). Hispanic women with the highest rates of NTD births, also have the lowest consumption of enriched grain products (Yang et al., 2002). In recent research conducted by Brigham Young University (BYU) faculty and students, corn tortillas were shown to be an effective vehicle for micronutrient fortification (Burton et al., 2008). Tortillas made with grains such as corn masa are considered an especially good micronutrient delivery medium …

Skin Cancer Prevention Coverage In Popular Us Women’S Health And Fitness Magazines: An Analysis Of Advertisements And Articles, Corey Hannah Basch, Danna Ethan, Grace Clarke Hillyer, Alyssa Berdnik

Publications and Research

The desire to be tan is a phenomenon that public health researchers have investigated, as exposure to UV radiation increases the chances of developing skin cancer. Media messages in women’s magazines have been shown to contribute to this problem. Much less is known about the prevalence of skin cancer prevention messages in these magazines. This study's aim was to identify the number and type of articles and advertised products devoted to skin health (sun protection and skin cancer prevention in particular) within five popular U.S. greater than women’s health and fitness magazines. We analyzed articles and advertisements over seven months …
