Optimization And Standardization Of The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (Orac) Assay, Richard Low, Dr. Tory Parker Apr 2014

Optimization And Standardization Of The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (Orac) Assay, Richard Low, Dr. Tory Parker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Antioxidants, when consumed, have the ability to neutralize free radicals, suggesting their presence may protect human physiology from destructive oxidative processes1. Several assays have been developed that quantify the antioxidant capacity of compounds, and one assay that is commonly utilized by researchers and industry is the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assay2. Despite its popularity, significant differences in reported ORAC values occur between laboratories, leading to difficulties in comparing research. Dr. Parker and his lab conducted a series of tests to attempt to standardize and optimize the ORAC assay.

Do The Antioxidants In Chocolate Interact Synergistically With The Antioxidants In Strawberries?, Kevin Lowder, Dr. Tory Parker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project was a very meaningful experience for me, as it allowed me to work closely with my mentor with the goal of publication in a scientific journal. I had approached Dr. Parker about working in his lab prior to applying for an ORCA grant, so it was good that we already had established a rapport before working on this project.

Lactose Hydrolysis As A Method For Reducing Added Sugar In Chocolate Milk, Eric Engstrom Apr 2014

Lactose Hydrolysis As A Method For Reducing Added Sugar In Chocolate Milk, Eric Engstrom

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Milk is a nutrient dense food that cannot be utilized easily by those with lactose intolerance. Lactose-hydrolysis is a process through which the native lactose in milk is enzymatically converted into its constituent sugars, glucose and galactose. Because this process digests the lactose in milk, the milk can then be digested by consumers with lactose intolerance without adverse affect (Somkuti, 1997). This conversion results in a sweeter product (Fennema, 2008).

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Aims: Recent metabolomics and animal model studies show trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), an intestinal microbiota-dependent metabolite formed from dietary trimethylamine-containing nutrients such as phosphatidylcholine (PC), choline, and carnitine, is linked to coronary artery disease pathogenesis. Our aim was to examine the prognostic value of systemic choline and betaine levels in stable cardiac patients. Methods and Results: We examined the relationship between fasting plasma choline and betaine levels and risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE = death, myocardial infraction, stroke) in relation to TMAO over 3 years of follow-up in 3903 sequential stable subjects undergoing elective diagnostic coronary angiography. In our study …

Virtually Scanning Jamestown 1607-1610, Lauren Volkers

UROP Posters

The Virtual Curation Laboratory, located at Virginia Commonwealth University, has been 3D scanning artifacts in collaboration with Jamestown Rediscovery from a very narrow period of time,1607 to 1610. This short time period includes the founding of the Jamestown colony and the Starving Time, where colonists consumed dogs, their seven horses, and at least one young woman. The intersection of Native Americans and Europeans can also be seen with native-made artifacts found in European contexts or altered by European contact. This poster will feature a butchered dog mandible and a butchered horse tibia from the Starving Time, native-made and European-made pipes …

Association Between Heavy-Metal Exposure And The Digit-Symbol Substitution Test In Us Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study, Parker Woody, Dawson Hedges Apr 2014

Association Between Heavy-Metal Exposure And The Digit-Symbol Substitution Test In Us Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study, Parker Woody, Dawson Hedges

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Heavy metals in the environment are a serious concern. One of the most widely known and studied neurotoxins is lead. For many years it was put into gasoline and paint in the US until it was discovered that it lead to developmental defects and affected cognitive functioning. There is a concern that other heavy metals could have adverse effects as well. Much research has focused on exposure to heavy metals in those exposed to abnormally high levels, such as those found in occupational exposures. Very little has been done examining heavy metal levels in the body such as those that …

Faculty Publications

Background

Extracurricular school-based sports are considered to be an ideal means of reaching children who are not active in community sports. The purposes of this study were to examine the extent to which pupils not engaging in community sports do participate in extracurricular school-based sports, and to assess whether extracurricular school-based sports participants are more physically active and/or more autonomously motivated towards sports in daily life than children who do not participate in extracurricular school-based sports.

Methods

One thousand forty-nine children (53.7% boys; M age = 11.02 years, SD = 0.02) out of 60 classes from 30 Flemish elementary schools, …

The Qualitative Report

In this and subsequent issues, The Qualitative Report will publish eight articles about a journal written by Edward B. Emerson (1805-1834), a younger brother of American philosopher and writer Ralph Waldo Emerson. This introduction will describe the origins of the project, the sources, the process and the outcomes of the collaboration. The authors hope to document and illustrate the richness and value of interdisciplinary qualitative inquiry, while providing specifics of how the Emerson Journal Project evolved. We provide examples to illustrate the characteristics of effective teamwork, but also present the challenges along the way and how they were surmounted. The …

An Evaluation Of Prenatal Care Clinic Selection And The Association With Subsequent Process/Outcome Measures Among Medicaid Beneficiaries, Lynn Vanderwielen Apr 2014

An Evaluation Of Prenatal Care Clinic Selection And The Association With Subsequent Process/Outcome Measures Among Medicaid Beneficiaries, Lynn Vanderwielen

Theses and Dissertations

In 2010 Medicaid financed approximately 48% of all births in the United States and nearly 30% of all births in Virginia. Due to strict state-specific eligibility criteria, many low-income women qualify for Medicaid coverage exclusively as a result of pregnancy status. As the nation moves forward with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), state-elected Medicaid expansion has the potential to expand services to women of reproductive age that would precede pregnancy events and offer continuous access to care postpartum. Despite this potential influx of newly insured women, little is known about how this population may make decisions regarding …

Little Emperors And An Army Of Orphans: The Government’S Control Over The Idea Of Family In An Overpopulated World, Corinna L. Miller Apr 2014

Little Emperors And An Army Of Orphans: The Government’S Control Over The Idea Of Family In An Overpopulated World, Corinna L. Miller

Honors College Theses

This research elaborates on the connection between governmental policies for population control and the psychological effects felt by its citizens. Governments enact laws to form and shape their country, but when plans to benefit society as a whole overspill into the personal rights of families, there can be unforeseen consequences that span across cultural, economic and physiological wellbeing. These side effects can have debilitating outcomes for countless generations to come, even after the policy has been abolished. In an age where exponential population growth is a severe problem, this study attempts to understand what happens when governmental policies influence the …

Open To Debate: Open Education And The Library, Ann Agee, Christina Mune

Faculty and Staff Publications

Universities have embraced massive open online courses (MOOCs) with startling speed. For some, this “disruptive” idea sparks excitement about a world of free and easily accessible education. Others see MOOCs as a way to further monetize education and reduce faculty on the academy’s payroll. This session encourages you to get involved in the conversation and consider other provocative questions arising from the new academic landscape created by open educational resources and free online courses. In an Oxford-style debate, session attendees get to be the debaters by voting on some of today’s most controversial issues, engaging in debate, then voting a …
