Understanding How Service-Learning Impacts The Dispositions Of Teach For America Candidates And Their Students, Dymaneke Mitchell, Sy Karlin, Todd Alan Price

Faculty Publications

This article is based on a study that assessed Teach for America (TFA) candidates’ dispositions toward service-learning before and after they developed and implemented a service-learning project with their students. This article may be used to understand the significance of raising alternative certification teacher candidates’ community awareness so that they may stay longer as teachers while also becoming more acculturated to their school and neighborhood surroundings. The authors assert that candidates will become more effective through carefully planned service-learning experiences with community partners and become better service and public education advocates.

Increased Mitochondrial Biogenesis Preserves Intestinal Stem Cell Homeostasis And Contributes To Longevity In Indy Mutant Flies, Ryan P. Rogers, Blanka Rogina Apr 2014

Increased Mitochondrial Biogenesis Preserves Intestinal Stem Cell Homeostasis And Contributes To Longevity In Indy Mutant Flies, Ryan P. Rogers, Blanka Rogina

UCHC Articles - Research

The Drosophila Indy (I'm Not Dead Yet) gene encodes a plasma membrane transporter of Krebs cycle intermediates, with robust expression in tissues associated with metabolism. Reduced INDY alters metabolism and extends longevity in a manner similar to caloric restriction (CR); however, little is known about the tissue specific physiological effects of INDY reduction. Here we focused on the effects of INDY reduction in the Drosophila midgut due to the importance of intestinal tissue homeostasis in healthy aging and longevity. The expression of Indy mRNA in the midgut changes in response to aging and nutrition. Genetic reduction of Indy expression increases …

Climate Change In The Zambian Mind: Communicating Risk Perception Of Climate Change And Variability In Zambia, Libert Mweemba Apr 2014

Climate Change In The Zambian Mind: Communicating Risk Perception Of Climate Change And Variability In Zambia, Libert Mweemba

Zambia Social Science Journal

No environmental issue has been of such truly global magnitude as the issue of climate change. And no other global environmental issue has been so controversial, not because of lack of scientific knowledge, but rather because it is a result of every human action and will have a direct impact on all human endeavour everywhere. We assessed whether Zambians perceive climate change as a significant threat and whether their risk perceptions of climate change influence their awareness of the degradation of the environment. The paper also examines the affective images Zambians have of global warming and whether these images can …

2009 H1n1 And Seasonal Influenza Immunization Among Pregnant Women: A Comparison Of Different Sources Of Immunization Information, Bonny Specker, Betty Wey, Jill Fuller, Marie-Noel Sandoval, Maureen Durkin, Nancy Dole, Emmanuel B. Walter

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

Validity of prenatal immunization data from different sources has not been assessed. We evaluated prenatal 2009 H1N1 and seasonal influenza (FLU) data obtained from state immunization information systems (IIS), medical record abstraction (MRA), and participant recall using medical care logs (NCS-MCL). 2009 H1N1 and FLU data were obtained from IIS and MRA for 325 pregnant women participating in the National Children's Study at three locations (SD/MN, NC, WI). Women recalled immunizations at first pregnancy visit and at 16-17 and 36 weeks' gestation (NCS-MCL). The proportion of women with vaccine information obtainable from each data source was determined, and proportions immunized …

Childhood Achalasia: A Comprehensive Review Of Disease, Diagnosis And Therapeutic Management, Ashanti L. Franklin, Mikael Petrosyan, Timothy D. Kane Apr 2014

Childhood Achalasia: A Comprehensive Review Of Disease, Diagnosis And Therapeutic Management, Ashanti L. Franklin, Mikael Petrosyan, Timothy D. Kane

Surgery Faculty Publications

Achalasia is an esophageal motility disorder characterized by failure of lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxation and is rare in children. The most common symptoms are vomiting, dysphagia, regurgitation, and weight loss. Definitive diagnosis is made with barium swallow study and esophageal manometry. In adults, endoscopic biopsy is recommended to exclude malignancy however; it is not as often indicated in children. Medical management often fails resulting in recurrent symptoms and the ultimate definitive treatment is surgical. Laparoscopic Heller myotomy with or without an anti-reflux procedure is the treatment of choice and has become standard of care for children with achalasia. Peroral …

Nutrition Affects Onset And Duration Of Wandering Behavior In Tobacco Hornworms, Megan Bentzel Apr 2014

Nutrition Affects Onset And Duration Of Wandering Behavior In Tobacco Hornworms, Megan Bentzel

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Insects that undergo complete metamorphosis (including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages) obtain no nutrition in the &me between the last larval stage and emergence from the pupa as an adult. In the final larval stage of burrowing insects, such as the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta), larvae wander to find soil or detritus in which to burrow, and then burrow, pupate, emerge as fully-‐formed adults, and return to the surface, relying solely on energy stored during the larval stage. I examined the effects of larval nutri&on on wandering behavior and expected that dietary manipulation would delay wandering in both underfed …

Developing Strategies To Mitigate And Control Environmental Listeria Monocytogenes In Retail Delis, Susan Rose Hammons Apr 2014

Developing Strategies To Mitigate And Control Environmental Listeria Monocytogenes In Retail Delis, Susan Rose Hammons

Open Access Theses

There are many research avenues being investigated at institutions nationwide with the intent to reduce the public health risk of listeriosis. Approaches include studies on L. monocytogenes transmission dynamics in retail delis, observations of deli worker practices, a structured expert elicitation on transmission dynamics and statistical modeling of listeriosis risk impact factors. This thesis describes my contribution to the work being done in our group to (i) understand prevalence and persistence of L. monocytogenes and Listeria species non-monocytogenes on environmental surfaces (food contact and non-food contact); (ii) identify characteristics or practices which place stores at increased risk for L. …

Anticipatory And Reactive Responses To Chocolate Restriction In Frequent Chocolate Consumers, Chelsey L. Keeler Apr 2014

Anticipatory And Reactive Responses To Chocolate Restriction In Frequent Chocolate Consumers, Chelsey L. Keeler

Open Access Theses

Many individuals have difficulty adhering to a weight loss diet. One possible explanation could be that dietary restriction paradoxically contributes to overconsumption. The objective of this study was to examine ingestive behavior under a forced chocolate restriction, with a focus on the anticipatory restriction period and the post-restriction period in frequent chocolate consumers. Fifty-six male (N=18) and female (N=38) high chocolate consumers with high or low cognitive disinhibition aged 27.70 ± 11.09 years with a mean BMI of 25.68± 5.92 kg/m2 participated. Chocolate snacks were provided for the first, second, and sixth week of the study to establish baseline, pre-restriction …

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Background and objective: The bacterial profile of saliva is composed of bacteria from different oral surfaces. The objective of this study was to determine whether different diet intake, lifestyle, or socioeconomic status is associated with characteristic bacterial saliva profiles.

Design: Stimulated saliva samples from 292 participants with low levels of dental caries and periodontitis, enrolled in the Danish Health Examination Survey (DANHES), were analyzed for the presence of approximately 300 bacterial species by means of the Human Oral Microbe Identification Microarray (HOMIM). Using presence and levels (mean HOMIM-value) of bacterial probes as endpoints, the influence of diet intake, …
