Fundamental study of enzymatic nucleoside transport suffers for lack of optical probes that can be tracked noninvasively. Nucleoside transporters are integral membrane glycoproteins that mediate the salvage of nucleosides and their passage across cell membranes. The substrate recognition site is the deoxyribose sugar, often with little distinction among nucleobases. Reported here are nucleoside analogues in which emissive, cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes are “clicked” to C-1 of deoxyribose in place of canonical nucleobases. The resulting complexes show visible luminescence at room temperature and 77 K with microsecond-length triplet lifetimes. A representative complex is crystallographically characterized. Transport and luminescence are demonstrated in cultured …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
When I try to explain to non-history people what my degree means, I used to hit wall after all. It was so hard explaining exactly what, "Applied History," really means. People understand, "History," but the idea of public history has a certain brand of special sauce added on top.
I used to say something akin to, "doing Park Ranger things," though that never really worked. When I had a group on an historical landscape, I'd often just say, "Public History is this."
It doesn't work. Those definitions aren't clear. [excerpt]

Investigation Of The Structure And Dynamics Of Regioisomeric Eu³⁺ And Gd³⁺ Chelates Of Nb-Dotma: Implications For Mri Contrast Agent Design, Benjamin Charles Webber
Dissertations and Theses
The detection of disease and abnormal pathology by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been aided significantly by the use of gadolinium (Gd3+)-based contrast agents (CAs) over the past three decades. MRI and MRI CAs play a critical role in diagnosing tumors and diseases of the central nervous system. The agents used clinically have been shown to safely increase MRI contrast despite the toxicity of Gd3+, owing to the high kinetic and thermodynamic stability of these chelates. However, current CAs enhance contrast at a small fraction of what is theoretically possible. This leads to the necessity of …

A Comparison Of Computational Efficiency: Cholesky Decomposition And Spectral Methods For The Generation Of Fractional Brownian Motion, Micah S. Allred, Dr. David Clark
A Comparison Of Computational Efficiency: Cholesky Decomposition And Spectral Methods For The Generation Of Fractional Brownian Motion, Micah S. Allred, Dr. David Clark
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Since its popularization by Mandelbrot and Von Ness in the early 60’s, Fractional Brownian Motion (fBm), has found a great many applications in such fields as Option Pricing, Signal Processing, Internet Traffic, Hydrology, and Geology. This process is an extension of Brownian Motion which allows for a process with long memory, that is, the next increment is influenced by the evolution of increments in the past. Contrast this to Brownian Motion which is the continuous time analog to coin flipping. Here, each flip of the coin is completely independent and unaffected by past flips. As many processes exhibit dependent, rather …
A Practical Approach To Specific Heat-Phonon Spectrum Inversion, Thomas C. Butler, Dr. William E. Evenson
A Practical Approach To Specific Heat-Phonon Spectrum Inversion, Thomas C. Butler, Dr. William E. Evenson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Inverse problems have long provided researchers in a variety of disciplines with fruitful and challenging problems with immense applicability. However, as early investigators discovered, most of these problems are ill-posed.1 This means that the existence of the solution is not guaranteed, and even if it does exist, the solution may not be unique. Additionally, the solution may be remarkably sensitive to small perturbations of the input data. This means that small inaccuracies in data can result in unphysical solutions when inversion is carried out. However, regularization methods can often be developed for a class of problems that allow a researcher …

Due to the high energy of soft x-ray radiation, coherent x-rays are rather difficult to produce. The most common source of x-rays is bremsstrahlung, or breaking radiation. Brehmsstahlung is produced by accelerating an electron across a potential, and then rapidly decelerating the particle, giving off an x-ray. Although the use of bremsstrahlung is widespread, it is not an adequate xray source for many potential applications because it is broadband in wavelength and incoherent. The shorter wavelength radiation of x-rays could be used to print smaller, more efficient electronic circuits through lithography, or could be used in medical imaging. Hence, the …

Computers are getting faster, and as they do, computer chips are getting smaller. Photolithography is a process used to design nanoscale patterns on a computer chip. In photolithography, the image of a circuit pattern is transferred from a mask to the semiconductor wafer. This is accomplished by exposing the mask to light and then reflecting the mask’s image through a series of image-reducing multilayer mirrors. These mirrors focus the reduced circuit pattern on to the semiconductor wafer. The wavelength of light incident on the mask determines the size of the resolvable features on the wafer. It has been predicted that …

The Physiological Effects Of Music On Children In Health Clinics And Orphanages In Beira, Mozambique And Bapatla, India, Jordan Joseph Ash, Dr. Shane Reece
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Music therapy seeks to take advantage of specific sounds and rhythms that promote physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being. While the physiological benefits of music have long been recognized, there have been few attempts to quantify the results and document their application. This paper seeks to provide numerical evidence of the effects of music on destitute children in third-world settings.

Response Adaptive Design Using Auxiliary And Primary Outcomes, Shuxian Sinks
Response Adaptive Design Using Auxiliary And Primary Outcomes, Shuxian Sinks
Theses and Dissertations
Response adaptive designs intend to allocate more patients to better treatments without undermining the validity and the integrity of the trial. The immediacy of the primary response (e.g. deaths, remission) determines the efficiency of the response adaptive design, which often requires outcomes to be quickly or immediately observed. This presents difficulties for survival studies, which may require long durations to observe the primary endpoint. Therefore, we introduce auxiliary endpoints to assist the adaptation with the primary endpoint, where an auxiliary endpoint is generally defined as any measurement that is positively associated with the primary endpoint. Our proposed design (referred to …

“The Flow Of Blood In Nature” Franz Marc’S Animal Theory, Morgan Rinehart
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues for a coherent theory of the animal in the written and visual works of the German Expressionist painter, Franz Marc. By contextualizing Marc’s animal theory within the history of animal studies, this thesis will analyze how Marc’s animal theory corresponds with several central concepts within this field. One of these concepts—a theory of animal death—is central to the artist’s greater theory of the animal and to the analysis this thesis provides. In examining Marc’s theory of animal death, the following work will propose that the artist’s theory of animal spirituality is his greatest legacy within the field …

We present the results of a directed search for continuous gravitational waves from unknown, isolated neutron stars in the Galactic center region, performed on two years of data from LIGO’s fifth science run from two LIGO detectors. The search uses a semicoherent approach, analyzing coherently 630 segments, each spanning 11.5 hours, and then incoherently combining the results of the single segments. It covers gravitational wave frequencies in a range from 78 to 496 Hz and a frequency-dependent range of first-order spindown values down to −7.86×10−8 Hz/s at the highest frequency. No gravitational waves were detected. The 90% confidence upper limits …

We have estimated the ionospheric location, area, and travel time of quasi-periodic oscillations originating from the magnetospheric flanks. This was accomplished by utilizing global and local MHD models and Tsyganenko semi-empirical magnetic field model on multiple published and four new cases believed to be caused by the Kelvin– Helmholtz Instability. Finally, we used auroral, magnetometer, and radar instruments to observe the ionospheric signatures. The ionospheric magnetic latitude determined using global MHD and Tsyganenko models ranged from 58.3–80.2 degrees in the Northern Hemisphere and −59.6 degrees to −83.4 degrees in the Southern Hemisphere. The ionospheric magnetic local time ranged between 5.0–13.8 …

We conceptualize structure in personal consumption by explicitly defining categorizations of goods and services that consumers typically make in defining and organizing these objectives in their heuristics. Results from estimation of an Almost Ideal (AI) Demand System in each of two study periods generally support the structural differentiation of consumption goods.
Characterizing Expected Benefits Of Biomarkers In Treatment Selection, Ying Huang, Eric Laber, Holly Janes
Characterizing Expected Benefits Of Biomarkers In Treatment Selection, Ying Huang, Eric Laber, Holly Janes
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Biomarkers associated with the treatment response heterogeneity hold potential for treatment selection. In practice, the decision regarding whether to adopt a treatment selection marker depends on the effect of treatment selection on the rate of targeted disease as well as additional cost associated with the treatment. We propose an expected benefit measure that incorporates both aspects to quantify a biomarker's treatment selection capacity. This measure extends an existing decision-theoretic framework, to account for the fact that optimal treatment absent marker information varies with the cost of treatment. In addition, we establish upper and lower bounds for the performance of a …

Resonant Enhancement Of The Harmonic-Generation Spectrum Of Beryllium, Jean Marcel Ngoko Djiokap, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
The high-order harmonic-generation (HHG) spectrum of Be is investigated in the multiphoton regime by solving the full-dimensional, two-active-electron, time-dependent Schr¨odinger equation in an intense (≈1013 W/cm2), 30-cycle laser field. As the laser frequency ωL varies from 1.7 to 1.8 eV (which is in the tunable range of a Ti:sapphire laser), the seventh harmonic becomes resonant sequentially with the transition between the ground state and two doubly excited autoionizing states, 2p4s(1P) (at ωL = 1.734 eV) and 2p5s …

How Do We Get Them On The Farm? Efforts To Improve Rural Teacher Recruitment And Retention In Arkansas, Robert Maranto
How Do We Get Them On The Farm? Efforts To Improve Rural Teacher Recruitment And Retention In Arkansas, Robert Maranto
The Rural Educator
Rural schools, particularly high poverty rural schools, often have difficulty hiring and retaining qualified teachers. Here, we discuss three programs the Arkansas Department of Education has used to attract teachers to teacher Geographic Shortage Districts (GSDs) through material incentives. Unfortunately, none of the programs have had much success, perhaps in part since the funding offered was inadequate to attract new teachers to isolated communities. Additionally, we analyze the use of materialistic and non-materialistic incentives on the websites of all school districts designated as GSDs by the Arkansas Department of Education. Few GSDs display non-materialistic appeals that might entice individuals to …

Simulation Of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines With Variable Pitch Foils, L. Damon Woods, John F. Gardner, Kurt S. Myers
Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A dynamic computer model of a turbine was developed in MATLAB in order to study the behavior of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) with variable pitch (articulating) foils. The simulation results corroborated the findings of several empirical studies on VAWTs. The model was used to analyze theories of pitch articulation and to inform the discussion on turbine design. Simulations of various models showed that pitch articulation allowed Darrieus-style vertical axis wind turbines to start from rest. Once in motion, the rotor was found to accelerate rapidly to very high rotational velocities. The simulations revealed a plateau region of high efficiency …
